In this paper we prove a version of the Gohberg lemma on compact Lie groups giving an estimate from below for the distance from a given operator to the set of compact operators on compact Lie groups. As a consequence, we prove several results on bounds for the essential spectrum and a criterion for an operator to be compact. The conditions are given in terms of the matrix-valued symbols of operators.

Non-harmonic Gohberg's lemma, Gershgorin theory and heat equation on manifolds with boundary

On a nonlinear compactness lemma in L^p(0,T;B)

We consider a nonlinear counterpart of a compactness lemma of J. Simon, which arises naturally in the study of doubly nonlinear equations of elliptic-parabolic type. Our work was motivated by previous results J. Simon, recently sharpened by H. Amann, in the linear setting, and by a nonlinear compactness argument of H.W. Alt and S. Luckhaus.

The Div-Curl Lemma Revisited

The Div-Curl Lemma, which is the basic result of the compensated compactness theory in Sobolev spaces, was introduced by F. Murat (1978) with distinct proofs for the $L^2(Ω)$ and $L^p(Ω)$, $p \neq 2$, cases. In this note we present a slightly different proof, relying only on a Green-Gauss integral formula and on the usual Rellich-Kondrachov compactness properties.

The Kolmogorov-Riesz compactness theorem

We show that the Arzela-Ascoli theorem and Kolmogorov compactness theorem both are consequences of a simple lemma on compactness in metric spaces. Their relation to Helly's theorem is discussed. An Analogue of Hinucin's Characterization of Infinite Divisibility for Operator-Valued Free Probability

Let $B$ be a finite, separable von Neumann algebra. We prove that a $B$-valued distribution $μ$ that is the weak limit of an infinitesimal array is infinitely divisible. The proof of this theorem utilizes the Steinitz lemma and may be adapted to provide a nonstandard proof of this type of theorem for various other probabilistic categories. We also develop weak topologies for this theory and prove the corresponding compactness and convergence results.

A chain condition for operators from C(K)-spaces

We introduce a chain condition (bishop), defined for operators acting on C(K)-spaces, which is intermediate between weak compactness and having weakly compactly generated range.
