Controlling the flow of energy in a random medium is a research frontier with a wide range of applications. As recently demonstrated, the effect of disorder on the transmission of optical beams, may be partially compensated by wavefront shaping, but losing control over individual light paths. Here we report on a novel physical effect whereby energy is spatially and spectrally transferred inside a disordered active medium by the coupling between individual lasing modes. We show that is possible to transmit an optical resonance to a remote point by employing specific control over optical excitations. The observed nonlinear transport bears some analogies to a field-effect transistor for light, which acts as a switch and as an amplifier.
We demonstrate lasing in arrays of microring resonators with underlying para-Fermi symmetry. The properties of the algebra allow the analytic prediction of propagation constants and normal modes of an array of passive resonators that show the optical analogue of a zero-energy mode that is its own chiral pair. The rest of the normal modes in the linear model form chiral pairs that are evenly distributed around the pseudo zero-energy mode. We use this information to construct a class-B laser model where even and odd sites are driven with different strength in a pattern following para-Fermi algeb…

The ability to control the laser modes within a subwavelength resonator is of key relevance in modern optoelectronics. This work deals with the theoretical research on optical properties of a PT--symmetric nano--scaled dimer formed by two dielectric wires, one is with loss and the other with gain, wrapped with graphene sheets. We show the existence of two non--radiating trapped modes which transform into radiating modes by increasing the gain--loss parameter. Moreover, these modes reach the lasing condition for suitable values of this parameter, a fact that makes these modes to achieve an ultr…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) lasing requires population inversion, it is inefficient and possesses poor spectral properties. We develop an inversion-less concept for a quantum plasmonic waveguide that exploits unidirectional superradiant SPP emission of radiation to produce intense coherent surface plasmon beams. Our scheme includes a resonantly driven cold atomic medium in a lossless dielectric situated above an ultra-low loss negative index metamaterial~(NIMM) layer. We propose generating unidirectional superradiant radiation of the plasmonic field within an atomic medium and a NIMM lay…
Topological lasers are of growing interest as a way to achieve disorder-robust single mode lasing using arrays of coupled resonators. We study lasing in a two-dimensional coupled resonator lattice exhibiting transitions between trivial and topological phases, which allows us to systematically characterize the lasing modes throughout a topological phase. We show that, unlike conventional topological robustness that requires a sufficiently large bulk band gap, bifurcations in topological edge mode lasing can occur even when the band gap is maximized. We show that linear mode bifurcations from si…
We report on the observation of backward lasing at 391.4 nm of nitrogen ions pumped by linearly polarized intense femtosecond pulses at 800 nm. The strongly enhanced spectral intensity at 391.4 nm, as well as the amplification of an externally injected backward seeding pulse, confirm that the backward 391.4 nm signal is due to optical amplification in the gas plasma. Compared to the forward emission at 391.4 nm, the optimal backward emission is achieved at a lower gas pressure around 10 mbar, which is due to asymmetry of the backward and forward directions rooted in the traveling excitation ge…

In standard lasers, light amplification requires population inversion between an upper and a lower state to break the reciprocity between absorption and stimulated emission. However, in a medium prepared in a specific superposition state, quantum interference may fully suppress absorption while leaving stimulated emission intact, opening the possibility of lasing without inversion. Here we show that lasing without inversion arises naturally during propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air. It is triggered by the combination of molecular ionization and molecular alignment, both una…
The simultaneous existence of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing is one of the most intriguing features of non-Hermitian photonics. However, the link between CPA lasing and PT symmetry breaking at the exceptional point (EP) needs clarification. In this paper, we study the manifestations of the CPA-laser effect in a PT-symmetric multilayer loss-gain structure using both the transfer-matrix method and numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We show that the maximal contrast between absorption and amplification at different phase relations between the input waves is reache…
The realization of ultrahigh quality (Q) resonators regardless of the underpinning material platforms has been a ceaseless pursuit, because the high Q resonators provide an extreme environment of storage of light to enable observations of many unconventional nonlinear optical phenomenon with high efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-high Q factor (7.1*10^6) microresonator on the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator (4H-SiCOI) platform in which both \c{hi}^(2) and \c{hi}^(3) nonlinear processes of high efficiencies have been generated. Broadband frequency conversions, including second-, third…

Single-mode operation is a desirable but elusive property for lasers operating at high pump powers. Typically, single-mode lasing is attainable close to threshold, but increasing the pump power gives rise to multiple lasing peaks due to inter-modal gain competition. We propose a laser with the opposite behavior: multi-mode lasing occurs at low output powers, but pumping beyond a certain value produces a single lasing mode, with all other candidate modes experiencing negative effective gain. This behavior arises in a lattice of coupled optical resonators with non-fine-tuned asymmetric couplings…
Topological lasers have been intensively investigated as a strong candidate for robust single-mode lasers. A typical topological laser employs a single-mode topological edge state, which appears deterministically in a designed topological bandgap and exhibits robustness to disorder. These properties seem to be highly attractive in pursuit of high power lasers capable of single mode operation. In this paper, we theoretically analyze a large-scale single-mode laser based on a topological edge state. We consider a sizable array laser consisting of a few hundreds of site resonators, which support …
We report on the generation of nonclassical states of light in a silicon ring resonator in a selfpumping scheme. The ring is inserted in a lasing cavity, for which it acts as a filter, so that the lasing always occurs within a selected ring resonance, without active stabilization of the resonance frequency. We show the emission of coincident photon pairs and study their correlation properties through the reconstruction of the measurements via stimulated emission.
Controlling the dynamics of mechanical resonators is central to many quantum science and metrology applications. Optomechanical control of diamond resonators is attractive owing to diamond's excellent physical properties and its ability to host electronic spins that can be coherently coupled to mechanical motion. Using a confocal microscope, we demonstrate tunable amplification and damping of a diamond nanomechanical resonator's motion. Observation of both normal mode cooling from room temperature to 80K, and amplification into self--oscillations with $60\,μ\text{W}$ of optical power is observ…
10 μm lasing is studied in a compact CO2-He cell pressurized up to 15 atm when optically pumped by a ~50 mJ Fe:ZnSe laser tunable around 4.3 μm. The optimal pump wavelength and partial pressure of CO2 for generating 10 μm pulses are found to be ~4.4 μm and 0.75 atm, respectively. Without cavity optimization, the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached ~10% at a total pressure of 7 atm. The gain lifetime is measured to be ~1 μs at pressures above 10 atm, indicating the feasibility of using high-pressure optically pumped CO2 for the efficient amplification of picosecond 10 μm pulses.
Lasers that operate in the visible wavelength range and can be easily integrated on a chip together with photonic integrated circuits are of particular interest for biophotonic applications. We present a new class of laser sources that emit at 600 nm wavelength and can be efficiently integrated on the $\mathrm{Si}_3\mathrm{N}_4$ platform using low-cost fabrication techniques. The $\mathrm{Si}_3\mathrm{N}_4$-organic hybrid lasers are optically pumped from top without the need of a precise alignment. We investigate different laser geometries based on spiral shaped ring resonators and distributed…
In this thesis, we explore random lasing from a system comprising of amplifying microresonators. Using Monte-Carlo simulation, we investigate the diffusive propagation of light in an amplifying medium with randomly suspended resonant scatterers. The simulation shows that a more efficient and stable coherent random lasing can be achieved with monodisperse scatterers having amplification in the intra-scatterer region. To realize that experimentally, the array of amplifying microdroplets is created using a vibrating orifice droplet generator. The degree of randomness is tuned by varying the size …
