We study various classes of real hypersurfaces that are not embeddable into more special hypersurfaces in higher dimension, such as spheres, real algebraic compact strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces or compact pseudoconvex hypersurfaces of finite type. We conclude by stating some open problems.
In this paper, we provide {\em effective} results on the non-embeddability of real-analytic hypersurfaces into a hyperquadric. We show that, for any $N >n \geq 1$, the defining functions $φ(z,\bar z,u)$ of all real-analytic hypersurfaces $M=\{v=φ(z,\bar z,u)\}\subset\mathbb C^{n+1}$ containing Levi-nondegenerate points and locally transversally holomorphically embeddable into some hyperquadric $\mathcal Q\subset\mathbb C^{N+1}$ satisfy an {\em universal} algebraic partial differential equation $D(φ)=0$, where the algebraic-differential operator $D=D(n,N)$ depends on $n, N$ only. To the best of…
We discuss a family $M_t^n$, with $n\ge 2$, $t>1$, of real hypersurfaces in a complex affine $n$-dimensional quadric arising in connection with the classification of homogeneous compact simply-connected real-analytic hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ due to Morimoto and Nagano. To finalize their classification, one needs to resolve the problem of the embeddability of $M_t^n$ in ${\mathbb C}^n$ for $n=3,7$. We show that $M_t^7$ is not embeddable in ${\mathbb C}^7$ for every $t$ and that $M_t^3$ is embeddable in ${\mathbb C}^3$ for all $1<t<1+10^{-6}$. As a consequence of our analysis of a map co…
We show that every small resolution of a three-dimensional terminal hypersurface singularity can occur on a non-embeddable 1-convex manifold. We give an explicit example of a non-embeddable manifold containing an irreducible exceptional rational curve with normal bundle of type (1,-3). To this end we study small resolutions of cD_4-singularities.
We consider a family $M_t^n$, with $n\ge 2$, $t>1$, of real hypersurfaces in a complex affine $n$-dimensional quadric arising in connection with the classification of homogeneous compact simply-connected real-analytic hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ due to Morimoto and Nagano. To finalize their classification, one needs to resolve the problem of the embeddability of $M_t^n$ in ${\mathbb C}^n$ for $n=3,7$. In our earlier article we showed that $M_t^7$ is not embeddable in ${\mathbb C}^7$ for every $t$ and that $M_t^3$ is embeddable in ${\mathbb C}^3$ for all $1<t<1+10^{-6}$. In the present pap…
We show that there are strictly pseudoconvex, real algebraic hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ that cannot be locally embedded into a sphere in $\bC^{N+1}$ for any $N$. In fact, we show that there are strictly pseudoconvex, real algebraic hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ that cannot be locally embedded into any compact, strictly pseudoconvex, real algebraic hypersurface.
The relationship between interpolation and separation properties of hypersurfaces in Bargmann-Fock spaces over $\mathbb{C} ^n$ is not well-understood except for $n=1$. We present four examples of smooth affine algebraic hypersurfaces that are not uniformly flat, and show that exactly two of them are interpolating.
Since the great work on holomorphic curves into algebraic varieties intersecting hypersurfaces in general position established by Ru in 2009, recently there has been some developments on the second main theorem into algebraic varieties intersecting moving hypersurfaces targets. The main purpose of this paper is to give some interesting improvements of Ru's second main theorem for moving hypersurfaces targets located in subgeneral position with index.
We give series of explicit examples of Levi-nondegenerate real-analytic hypersurfaces in complex spaces that are not transversally holomorphically embeddable into hyperquadrics of any dimension. For this, we construct invariants attached to a given hypersurface that serve as obstructions to embeddability. We further study the embeddability problem for real-analytic submanifolds of higher codimension and answer a question by Forstnerič.
We study the holomorphic embedding problem from a compact strongly pseudoconvex real algebraic hypersurface into a sphere of higher dimension. We construct a family of compact strongly pseudoconvex hypersurfaces $M_ε$ in $\mathbb{C}^2,$ and prove that for any integer $N$, there is a number $ε(N)$ with $0<ε(N)<1$ such that for any $ε$ with $0<ε<ε(N)$, $M_ε$ can not be locally holomorphically embedded into the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2N-1}$ in $\mathbb{C}^N.$
In [Ann. of Math. 169 (2009)], Min Ru proved a second main theorem for algebraically nondegenerate holomorphic curves in complex projective varieties intersecting fixed hypersurface targets. In this paper, by introducing a new proof method for the case of projective varieties, we generalize this result to moving hypersurface targets.
In this paper we construct examples of $CR$ deformations of Lorentzian hypersurfaces which are $CR$ embeddable at all points outside an arbitrarily small compact set whose interior contains a point where $CR$ embeddablity is not possible.
In this paper, a non-integrated defect relation for meromorphic maps from complete Kähler manifolds $M$ into smooth projective algebraic varieties $V$ intersecting hypersurfaces located in $k$-subgeneral position is proved. The novelty of this result lies in that both the upper bound and the truncation level of our defect relation depend only on $k$, $\dim_{\,\mathbb{C}}(V)$ and the degrees of the hypersurfaces considered. In addition, this defect relation recovers Hirotaka Fujimoto [Theorem 1.1; MR0884636 (88m:32049); Japan. J. Math. (N.S.) 11 (1985), no. 2, 233-264.] when subjected to the sa…
In this paper, we prove some difference analogue of second main theorems of meromorphic mapping from Cm into an algebraic variety V intersecting a finite set of fixed hypersurfaces in subgeneral position. As an application, we prove a result on algebraically degenerate of holomorphic curves intersecting hypersurfaces and difference analogue of Picard's theorem on holomorphic curves. Furthermore, we obtain a second main theorem of meromorphic mappings intersecting hypersurfaces in N-subgeneral position for Veronese embedding in Pn(C) and a uniqueness theorem sharing hypersurfaces.
We consider a family $M_t^3$, with $t>1$, of real hypersurfaces in a complex affine $3$-dimensional quadric arising in connection with the classification of homogeneous compact simply-connected real-analytic hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ due to Morimoto and Nagano. To finalize their classification, one needs to resolve the problem of the CR-embeddability of $M_t^3$ in ${\mathbb C}^3$. In our earlier article we showed that $M_t^3$ is CR-embeddable in ${\mathbb C}^3$ for all $1<t<\sqrt{(2+\sqrt{2})/3}$. In the present paper we prove that $M_t^3$ can be immersed in ${\mathbf C}^3$ for every $t…
Given a projective symplectic manifold $M$ and a non-singular hypersurface $X \subset M$, the symplectic form of $M$ induces a foliation of rank 1 on $X$, called the characteristic foliation. We study the question when the characteristic foliation is algebraic, namely, all the leaves are algebraic curves. Our main result is that the characteristic foliation of $X$ is not algebraic if $X$ is of general type. For the proof, we first establish an étale version of Reeb stability theorem in foliation theory and then combine it with the positivity of the direct image sheaves associated to families o…
We give a very simple argument to the effect that most germs of generic real analytic Cauchy-Riemann manifolds of positive CR dimension are not holomorphically embeddable into any generic real algebraic CR manifold of the same real codimension in a finite dimensional space. In particular, most such germs are not holomorphically equivalent to a germ of a generic real algebraic CR manifold.
It is proved that the germ of a holomorphic map from a real analytic hypersurface M in C^n into a strictly pseudoconvex compact real algebraic hypersurface M' in C^N, 1 < n < N extends holomorphically along any path on M.
In this work we study analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex algebraic surfaces. First, we show that if this foliation admits chaotic dynamics (i.e. if it does not admit a transverse invariant measure), then the connected components of the complement of the hypersurface are modifications of Stein domains. This allows us to extend the CR foliation to a singular algebraic foliation on the ambient complex surface. We apply this result to prove, by contradiction, that analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces admitting a transverse affine structure in a complex algebraic surface have a transverse inva…
We study singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in complex projective space. We define the rank of an algebraic Levi-flat hypersurface and study the connections between rank, degree, and the type and size of the singularity. In particular, we study degenerate singularities of algebraic Levi-flat hypersurfaces. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Levi-flat hypersurface to be a pullback of a real-analytic curve in $\mathbb{C}$ via a meromorphic function. Among other examples, we construct a nonalgebraic semianalytic Levi-flat hypersurface with compact leaves that is a …
We consider smooth, complex quasi-projective varieties $U$ which admit a compactification with a boundary which is an arrangement of smooth algebraic hypersurfaces. If the hypersurfaces intersect locally like hyperplanes, and the relative interiors of the hypersurfaces are Stein manifolds, we prove that the cohomology of certain local systems on $U$ vanishes. As an application, we show that complements of linear, toric, and elliptic arrangements are both duality and abelian duality spaces.
In this work, it is established that for a generic projective hypersurface $H\subset\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ of degree $d\geq(5n)^2\,n^{n}$, any holomorphic entire curve $f\colon\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})\setminus H$ has its image contained in a proper algebraic subvariety $Z\subsetneq\mathbb{P}^{n}(\mathbb{C})$, that does not depend on the curve $f$. Here generic means that the coefficients of the defining equation of $H$ have to lie outside of a proper algebraic subvariety of the projective space of coefficients of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ (that parametrizes the alge…
Let $M\subset \mathbb C^n$ be a real analytic hypersurface, $M'\subset \mathbb C^N$ $(N\geq n)$ be a strongly pseudoconvex real algebraic hypersurface of the special form and $F$ be a meromorphic mapping in a neighborhood of a point $p\in M$ which is holomorphic in one side of $M$. Assuming some additional conditions for the mapping $F$ on the hypersurface $M$, we proved that $F$ has a holomorphic extension to $p$. This result may be used to show the regularity of CR mappings between real hypersurfaces of different dimensions.
A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically eq…
To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite dimension greater than 1 over a field ${\Bbb F}$ of characteristic zero, and a projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\hbox{Ann}({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$. Such hypersurfaces possess remarkable properties. They can be used, for instance, to help decide whether two given Gorenstein algebras are isomorphic, which for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb C}$ leads to interesting consequences in singularity theory. Also, for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb R…
Let $n=2,3,4,5$ and let $X$ be a smooth complex projective hypersurface of $\mathbb P^{n+1}$. In this paper we find an effective lower bound for the degree of $X$, such that every holomorphic entire curve in $X$ must satisfy an algebraic differential equation of order $k=n=\dim X$, and also similar bounds for order $k>n$. Moreover, for every integer $n\ge 2$, we show that there are no such algebraic differential equations of order $k<n$ for a smooth hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$.
Let $H \subset {\mathbb P}^n$ be a real-analytic subvariety of codimension one induced by a real-analytic curve in the Grassmannian $G(n+1,n)$. Assuming $H$ has a global defining function, we prove $H$ is Levi-flat, the closure of its smooth points of top dimension is a union of complex hyperplanes, and its singular set is either of dimension $2n-2$ or dimension $2n-4$. If the singular set is of dimension $2n-4$, then we show the hypersurface is algebraic and the Levi-foliation extends to a singular holomorphic foliation of ${\mathbb P}^n$ with a meromorphic (rational of degree 1) first integr…
In this article we provide a version of Chow's theorem for real analytic Levi-flat hypersurfaces in the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n}$, $n \geq 2$. More specifically, we prove that a real analytic Levi-flat hypersurface $M \subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$, with singular set of real dimension at most $2n-4$ and whose Levi leaves are contained in algebraic hypersurfaces, is tangent to the levels of a rational function in $\mathbb{P}^{n}$. As a consequence, $M$ is a semialgebraic set. We also prove that a Levi foliation on $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ - a singular real analytic foliation whose leaves are i…
This article discusses the recent transcendental techniques used in the proofs of the following three conjectures. (1)~The plurigenera of a compact projective algebraic manifold are invariant under holomorphic deformation. (2)~There exists no smooth Leviflat hypersurface in the complex projective plane. (3)~A generic hypersurface of sufficiently high degree in the complex projective space is hyperbolic in the sense that there is no nonconstant holomorphic map from the complex Euclidean line to it.
In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over ${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. We then use this fact to confirm a long-standing conjecture of Kobayashi (1970), according to which a very general algebraic hypersurface…
In this article we use a theorem of Carlson and Griffiths and compute periods of linear algebraic cycles inside the Fermat variety of even dimension $n$ and degree $d$. As an application, for examples of $n$ and $d$ we prove that the locus of hypersurfaces containing two linear cycles whose intersection is of low dimension, is a reduced component of the Hodge locus in the underlying parameter space. We also check the same statement for hypersurfaces containing a complete intersection algebraic cycle. Our result confirms the Hodge conjecture for Hodge cycles obtained by the monodromy of the hom…
We give a generalization of an algebraic formula of Gomez-Mont for the index of a vector field with isolated zero in (C^n,0) and tangent to an isolated hypersurface singularity. We only assume that the vector field has an isolated zero on the singularity.
Let X be a geometrically smooth n-dimensional projective algebraic complex hypersurface in P^{n+1}(C). Using Green-Griffiths jets, we establish the existence of nonzero global algebraic differential equations that must be satisfied by every nonconstant entire holomorphic curve C -> X if X is of general type, namely if its degree d satisfies the optimal possible lower bound: d >= n + 3. The case n = 2 dates back to Green-Griffiths 1979, while according to very recent advances (Invent. Math. 180, pp. 161-223, February 2010), the best (and only) lower degree bound known previously in arbitrary di…
