Unlike to superfluid $^4$He the superfluid $^3$He-A support the existence of vortices with half quantum of circulation as well as single quantum vortices. The singular single quanta vortices as well as nonsingular vortices with 2 quanta of circulation have been revealed in rotating $^3$He-A. However, the half quantum vortices in open geometry always possess an extra energy due to spin-orbit coupling leading to formation of domain wall at distances larger than dipole length $\sim 10^{-3}cm$ from the vortex axis.
Fortunately the same magnetic dipole-dipole interaction does not prevent the existence of half-quantum vortices in the polar phase of superfluid $^3$He recently discovered in peculiar porous media "nematically ordered" aerogel. Here we discuss this exotic possibility.
The discoveries of half-quantum vortices in triplet pairing superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ as well in the exciton-polariton condensates are the other parts of the story about half-quantum vortices also described in the paper.
Half-quantum votices and ordinary vortices in a rotating thin film superfluid $^3$He under a strong magnetic field are considered. It is shown that $2n+1$ half-quantum vortices interpolates between $n$ singular vortices and $n+1$ singular vortices as the angular velocity is changed. The phase diagram of the vortex configurations in the angular velocity-magnetic field space is obtained for a paramagnon parameter $δ=0.05$.
This is the manuscript version of the Physics ViewPoint article introducing the paper "Observation of half-quantum vortices in topological superfluid $^3$He", by S. Autti et al., which appeared in Physical Review Letters, December 14, 2016.
Observability of half-quantum vortices and skyrmions in p-wave superconductors is an outstanding open question. Under the most common conditions, fractional flux vortices are not thermodynamically stable in bulk samples. Here we show that in chiral p-wave superconductors, there is a regime where, in contrast lattices of integer flux vortices are not thermodynamically stable. Instead skyrmions made of spatially separated half-quantum vortices are the topological defects produced by an applied external field.
We numerically solve the coupled Landau-Ginzburg-Maxwell equations for a model of a spin triplet px + ipy superconductor in which whole or half-quanta of flux thread through a hole. We recover the pattern of stable and unstable regions for the half-flux quanta observed in a recent experiment.
Motivated by the superconductivity of $M_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$, we study topological excitations in a nematic superconductor using Ginzburg-Landau theory. An isolated excitation at low field is shown to be either a distorted phase vortex or a tightly-bounded pair of half quantum vortices. Close to upper critical field $H_{c2}$, the vortex lattice is shown to be always hexagonal in the extreme type-II limit. Due to the different symmetries of the vortex lattice states, at least two phase transitions must take place when the external field is lowered from $H_{c2}$.
Motivated by a recent experiment on superfluid 3He-A confined in narrow parallel plates using a rotating cryostat, we explore possible vortices stable under magnetic field applied to arbitrary angle relative to the plates in order to seek vortices which can accommodate the Majorana zero mode in the core. After proving that the singular vortex with the unit winding number provides the Majorana mode in the spinful situation, we establish the phase diagram in the plane; the rotation frequency $Ω$ vs system size R by finding possible order parameter textures within the Ginzburg-Landau framework. W…
Recent experiments on superfluid $^3$He in globally anisotropic aerogels have shown realization of the polar superfluid phase and of the half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in this phase upon rotation. To clarify why the HQVs, which had not been detected clearly in the A phase of the bulk liquid, have been realized in the polar phase, we theoretically examine the relative stability of a HQV-pair against a single phase vortex in both the bulk A-phase and the polar phase in an aerogel. By taking care of important roles of a higher order gradient term, which assists the stability of HQVs but has never b…
Chiral superconductors are two-fold degenerate and domains of opposite chirality can form, separated by domain walls. There are indications of such domain formation in the quasi two-dimensional putative chiral $p$-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, yet no experiment has explicitly resolved individual domains in this material. In this work, $c$-axis domain walls lying parallel to the layers in chiral $p$-wave superconductors are explored from a theoretical point of view. First, using both a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau and a quasiclassical Bogoliubov-deGennes approach, a consistent qualitat…
Half quantum vortices (HQVs) in superfluid $^3He-A$ have been speculated since 1976. Two years ago, Yamashita et al reported a very unusual NMR satellite in the rotating superfluid $^3He-A$ in a parallel plate geometry. Recently this satellite has been interpreted in terms of HQVs. Also, the strong flux pinnings in the triplet superconductors $UPt_3, Sr_2RuO_4$ and $U_{1-x}Th_xBe_{13}$ have been discovered by Mota and her colleagues which are interpreted in terms of HQVs. We shall first review the bound state spectra around a single vortex in unconventional superconductors, which provides the …
Motivated by recent experiments observing half-integer flux quanta in mesoscopic loops of superconducting Sr2RuO4, a theory is developed based on a "d-soliton", a topological defect of spin-triplet superconductors involving a change of the spin configuration. A phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau free energy is given which allows to describe such a soliton yielding a half-integer flux quantum inside a loop, assuming a chiral p-wave superconducting phase. The d-soliton couples to spin polarization perpendicular to the loop axis, which allows to reduce the energy of the d-soliton, fitting well to t…
When the impurity mean free path is short, only spin-polarized Cooper pairs which are non-locally and antisymmetrically correlated in time may exist in a half-metallic ferromagnet. As a consequence, the half-metal acts as an odd-frequency superconducting condensate. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that quantum vortices can emerge in half-metals despite the complete absence of conventional superconducting correlations. Because these metals are conducting in only one spin band, we show that a circulating spin supercurrent accompanies these vortices. Moreover, we demonstrate that…
Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.
The dynamics of magnetic vortices in the mixed state of d-wave superconductors is affected by interaction with quasiparticles near the gap nodes. We study this effect by computing the overlap of the ground state wave functions of the nodal quasiparticles in a two-dimensional d-wave superconductor as the ground state changes in response to the motion of the vortex. We find that the overlap is strongly suppressed. This orthogonality catastrophe is specific to a half-quantum vortex and disappears in the case of a doubly-quantized vortex. This implies strong inhibition of the motion of half-quantu…
This paper has been withdrawn and replaced by a new version entitled "Vortex quantum dynamics of two dimensional lattice bosons" By Netanel H. Lindner, Assa Auerbach, Daniel P. Arovas, posted in arXiv:0810.2604. The calculations and results of the original manuscript were correct, and lead to several important conclusions about vortex dynamics and Hall conductance. However, we have dropped our conjecture, that vortices exhibit mutual Fermi statistics. The conjecture was based on the antisymmetry under exchange of two vortices, as revealed in the lowest eight many-body eigenstates of 16 sites t…
Half-quantum vortices (HQVs) can exist in a superconductor or superfluid with an exact or approximate U(1) \times U(1) symmetry, for instance in spinor condensates, 3He-A, Sr2RuO4, and possibly cuprate superconductors with stripe order. In this paper, we show that a lattice of HQVs can be stabilized at finite temperature even when it does not have lower energy than the lattice of full vortices at T = 0 since there is a gain in configurational entropy when a full vortex fractionalizes into a pair of HQVs. Specifically, the lattice of HQVs has an optical branch of phonon modes absent in the latt…
It has been shown [1] that many seemingly contradictory experimental findings concerning the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be accounted for as resulting from the existence of an assumed tetra-critical point at near ambient pressure at which $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$ superconducting states are degenerate. We perform both a Landau-Ginzburg and a microscopic mean-field analysis of the effect of spatially varying strain on such a state. In the presence of finite $xy$ shear strain, the superconducting state consists of two possible symmetry-related time-reversal symmetry (TRS…
We propose a simple way to stabilize half-quantum vortices in superconducting strontium ruthenate, assuming the order parameter is of chiral $p_x + ip_y$ symmetry, as is suggested by recent experiments. The method, first given by Salomaa and Volovik in the context of Helium-3, is very naturally suited for strontium ruthenate, which has a layered, quasi-two-dimensional, perovskite crystal structure. We propose possible experiments to detect their non abelian-braiding statistics. These experiments are of potential importance for topological quantum computation.
Spin-triplet superfluids can support exotic objects, such as half-quantum vortices characterized by the nontrivial winding of the spin structure. We present cantilever magnetometry measurements performed on mesoscopic samples of Sr2RuO4, a spin-triplet superconductor. For micron-sized annular-shaped samples, we observe transitions between integer fluxoid states, as well as a regime characterized by "half-integer transitions," i.e., steps in the magnetization with half the height of the ones we observe between integer fluxoid states. These half-height steps are consistent with the existence of …
Recent cantilever magnetometry measurements of annular micron-size samples of Sr2RuO4 have revealed evidence for the existence of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in this material [Jang et al. 2011]. We propose to look for HQVs in transport measurements and calculate magnetoresistance of a perforated superconducting film close to the transition temperature in the presence of HQVs. We analyze the dependence of magnetoresistance on the thermodynamic stability of HQVs which according to [Jang et al. 2011] can be varied by the application of an in-plane magnetic field and point out features which may …
We demonstrate that, in contrast to the single-component Abrikosov vortex, in two-component superconductors vortex solutions with exponentially screened magnetic field exist only in exceptional cases: in the case of vortices carrying an integer number of flux quanta, and in a special parameter limit for half-quantum vortices. For all other parameters the vortex solutions have delocalized magnetic field with a slowly decaying tail. Furthermore, we demonstrate a new effect which is generic in two-component systems but has no counterpart in single-component systems: on exactly half of the paramet…
Multi-gap superconductors exhibit interesting properties. In an $N$-gap superconductor, we have in general $U(1)^N$ phase invariance. This multiple-phase invariance is partially or totally spontaneously broken in a superconductor. The Nambu-Goldstone modes, as well as Higgs modes, are important and will play an important role in multi-condensate superconductors. The additional phase invariance leads to a new quantum phase, with help of frustrated Josephson effects, such as the time-reversal symmetry breaking, the emergence of massless modes and fractionally quantized-flux vortices. There is a …

${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in neutron stars are the largest topological quantum matters in our Universe. We establish the existence and stability of non-Abelian half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids with strong magnetic fields. Using a self-consistent microscopic approach, we find that a singly quantized vortex is energetically destabilized into a pair of two non-Abelian HQVs owing to the strongly spin-orbit-coupled pairing. We find a topologically protected Majorana fermion on each HQV, thereby providing two-fold non-Abelian anyons characterized by both Majorana fe…
We report theoretical results for the stability of half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in the superfluid phases of $^3$He confined in highly anisotropic Nafen aerogel. Superfluidity of $^3$He confined in Nafen is the realization of a "nematic superfluid" with Cooper pairs condensed into a single p-wave orbital aligned along the anisotropy axis of the Nafen aerogel. In addition to the nematic phase, we predict a second "chiral" phase that onsets at a lower transition temperature. This chiral phase spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry and is a topological superfluid. Both superfluid phases are e…
Stability of a half-quantum vortex (HQV) in superfluid $^3$He has been discussed recently by Kawakami, Tsutsumi and Machida in Phys. Rev. B {\bf 79}, 092506 (2009). We further extend this work here and consider the A$_2$ phase of superfluid $^3$He confined in thin slab geometry and analyze the HQV realized in this setting. Solutions of HQV and singly quantized singular vortex are evaluated numerically by solving the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation and respective first critical angular velocities are obtained by employing these solutions. We show that the HQV in the A$_2$ phase is stable near the…
In the triplet equal-spin-pairing states of both 3He-A phase and Sr2RuO4 superconductor, existence of Half-Quantum Vortices HQVs are possible. The vortices carry half-integer multiples of magnetic quantum flux (hc/2e). To obtain equilibrium condition for such systems, one has to take into account not only weak interaction energy but also effects of Landau Fermi liquid. Our method is based on the explanation of the HQV in terms of a BCS-like wave function with a spin-dependent boots. We have considered l=2 order effects of the Landau Fermi liquid. We have shown that the effects of Landau Fermi …
We study the local and topological features of Berry phases associated with the adiabatic transport of vortices in a d-wave superconductor of lattice fermions. At half filling, where the local Berry curvature must vanish due to symmetries, the phase associated with the exchange of two vortices is found to vanish as well, implying that vortices behave as bosons. Away from half filling, and in the limit where the magnetic length is large compared to the lattice constant, the local Berry curvature gives rise to an intricate flux pattern within the large magnetic unit cell. This renders the Berry …
We propose a two-path vortex interferometry experiment based on the Aharonov-Casher effect for detecting the non-Abelian nature of vortices in a chiral p-wave superconductor. The effect is based on observing vortex interference patterns upon enclosing a finite charge of externally controllable magnitude within the interference path. We predict that when the interfering vortices enclose an odd number of identical vortices in their path, the interference pattern disappears only for non-Abelian vortices. When pairing involves two distinct spin species, we derive the mutual statistics between half…
This article addresses the question whether the magnetic flux of stationary vortices or of half flux quanta generated by frustrated superconducting rings is noisy. It is found that the flux noise generated intrinsically by a superconductor is, in good approximation, not enhanced by stationary vortices. Half flux quanta generated by $π$-rings are characterized by considerably larger noise.
A simulation study using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory is performed for the vortex state in two-component superconductors, such as PrOs_4_Sb_12_. We investigate the flux flow and the pinning of the vortex sheet structure. We find domain wall that traps half flux-quantum vortices and moves with the flux flow. In the pinning case, we observe an emitting process of a conventional vortex from the vortex sheet by combining a pair of half flux-quantum vortices.
We consider the stability conditions for half-quantum vortices in quasi two dimensional $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor (such as ${\rm Sr_2 RuO_4}$ is believed to be) through energetics calculations. Although the predicted exotic nature of these excitations have recently attracted much attention but they have not been observed yet. We pay particular attention to the fact that an isolated half quantum vortex has a divergent energy cost in the bulk due to the associated {\it unscreened} spin current, which requires two half-quantum vortices with opposite spin winding to pair. We show that the stabilit…
It has been widely believed that half quantum vortices are indispensable to realize topological stable Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian anyons in spinful superconductors/superfluids. Contrary to this wisdom, we here demonstrate that integer quantum vortices in spinful superconductors can host topologically stable Majorana zero modes because of the mirror symmetry. The symmetry protected Majorana fermions may exhibit non-Abelian anyon braiding.
The polar phase of superfluid $^3$He is stable in "nematically ordered" densed aerogel. A rotating vessel with the polar superfluid can be filled either by an array of the single quantum vortices or by an array of the half-quantum vortices. It is shown that the inhomogeneous distribution of the spin part of the order parameter arising in an array of half-quantum vortices in strong enough magnetic field tilted to the average direction of aerogel strands leads to the appearance of a satellite in the NMR signal shifted in the negative direction with respect to the Larmor frequency. The satellite …
We study a current-biased 0-π-0 Josephson junction made by high-T_c superconductors, theoretically. When a length of the πjunction is large enough, this junction contains a vortex-antivortex pair at both ends of the πjunction. Magnetic flux carried by the vortices is calculated using the sine-Gordon equation. The result shows that the magnetic flux of the vortices is suppressed to zero as the distance between the vortices is reduced. By applying an external current, the orientation of the vortices is reversed, and a voltage pulse is generated. The current needed for this transition and generat…
Vortices in topological superconductors host Majorana zero modes (MZMs), which are proposed to be building blocks of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. Recently, a new single-material platform for realizing MZM has been discovered in iron-based superconductors, without involving hybrid semiconductor-superconductor structures. Here we report on a detailed scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of a FeTe0.55Se0.45 single crystal, revealing two distinct classes of vortices present in this system which differ by a half-integer level shift in the energy spectra of the vortex bound states.…
Magnetic relaxation in a MgB$_2$ superconductor was measured. The temperature dependence of the normalized relaxation rate was determined for three different magnetic fields. By extrapolating these rates to T=0 K, we find that these extrapolations do not approach zero, indicating quantum tunneling of vortices in the superconductor. A quantum correction of the relaxation rate, followed by the correction of the magnetic moment, is proposed. Using the quantum correction, we find that $U_0$ increases with decreasing temperature and approaches a maximum at T=0.
By using transport and magnetic measurement, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ and the irreversibility line $H_{irr}(T)$ has been determined. A big separation between $H_{c2}(0)$ and $H_{irr}(0)$ has been found showing the existence of a quantum vortex liquid state induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor $MgB_2$. Further investigation on the magnetic relaxation shows that both the quantum tunneling and the thermally activated flux creep weakly depends on temperature. But when the melting field $H_{irr}$ is approached, a drastic rising of the relaxation rate is o…
Conventional superconductors have vortices carrying integer multiples of magnetic flux quantum while unconventional ones, with p- or d-wave order parameter, allow half-integer fluxes. Here we show that mesoscopic size effects stabilize fractional flux vortices in the thermodynamical ground state of s-wave two-gap superconductors. The value of these fluxes can be an arbitrary fraction of flux quantum and can be measured directly from distributions of magnetic fields on the samples.
We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on the topological stability of chiral p-wave superconductors. We consider two models of superconductors: spinless and spinful with a focus on topological properties and Majorana zero-energy modes. We show that proliferation of vortex-antivortex pairs above the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature T_KT drives the transition from a thermal Quantum Hall insulator to a thermal metal/insulator, and dramatically modifies the ground-state degeneracy splitting. Therefore, in order to utilize 2D chiral p-wave superconductors for topological quantum computing, the…
The "half-quantum" vortices ($σ$) and quasiparticles ($ψ$) in a two-dimensional $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor obey the Ising-like fusion rules $ψ\times ψ=1$, $σ\times ψ=σ$, and $σ\times σ= 1+ψ$. We explain how the physical fusion of vortex-antivortex pairs allows us to use these rules to read out the information encoded in the topologically protected space of degenerate ground states. We comment on the potential applicability of this fact to quantum computation. Modified 11/30/05 to reflect manuscript as accepted for publication. Includes corrected last section.
Multiband superconductors support the excitation of vortices with fractional quantum flux, known as fractional vortices. In the ground state, the fractional vortices in different bands bond together to form a composite vortex with the standard flux quantum $Φ_0$; thus, it is difficult to stabilize the fractional vortices. Here we show that fractional vortex lattices can be stabilized in multiband superconductors with a periodic pinning array at the half matching field of the composite system, when full matching of the fractionalized vortices occurs. In the presence of a high current, the fract…
In order to help detecting superfluidity, we theoretically investigate p-wave pairing superfluids in neutral Fermion atom gases confined by a three dimensimentional (3D) harmonic potential. The Ginzburg-Landau framework, which is generic for p-wave superfluids, is used to describe the order parameter spatial structure, or texture characterized by the l-vector both at rest and under rotation. The l-vector configuration is strongly contrained by the boundary condition due to a trap. It is found that the ground state textures exhibit spontaneous supercurrent at rest both cigar and pancake shape t…
We explore the experimental implications of a recent theory of the quantum dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional superfluids proximate to Mott insulators. The theory predicts modulations in the local density of states in the regions over which the vortices execute their quantum zero point motion. We use the spatial extent of such modulations in scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements on the vortex lattice of BSCCO to estimate the inertial mass of a point vortex. We discuss other, more direct, experimental signatures of the vortex dynamics.
We consider a two-dimensional array of ultra-small superconducting grains, weakly coupled by Josephson junctions with large charging energy. We start from an effective action based on a microscopic tunneling Hamiltonian, which includes quasiparticle degrees of freedom, and study the resulting dissipative dynamics of quantum vortices. The equation of motion for a single vortex is deduced, and compared with a commonly adopted phenomenological model.
We consider vortices in scalar electrodynamics and compute the leading quantum correction to their energies for the BPS case of identical classical masses of the Higgs and gauge fields. In particular, we focus on the winding number $n$ dependence of these corrections, from which we can extract the binding energies of configurations with larger $n$. For both dimensionalities, $D=2+1$ and $D=3+1$, we find that quantum corrections are negative and scale approximately linearly with $n$, so that combined vortices are favored over isolated ones.
