Dark matter N-body simulations provide a powerful tool to model the clustering of galaxies and help interpret the results of galaxy redshift surveys. However, the galaxy properties predicted from N-body simulations are not necessarily representative of the observed galaxy populations; for example, theoretical uncertainties arise from the absence of baryons in N-body simulations. In this work, we assess how the uncertainties in N-body simulations impact the cosmological parameters inferred from galaxy redshift surveys. Applying the halo model framework, we find that the velocity bias of galaxies in modeling the redshift-space distortions is likely to be the predominant source of systematic bias. For a deep, wide survey like BigBOSS, current 10 per cent uncertainties in the velocity bias limit k_max to 0.14 h/Mpc. In contrast, we find that the uncertainties related to the density profiles and the galaxy occupation statistics lead to relatively insignificant systematic biases. Therefore, the ability to calibrate the velocity bias accurately -- from observations as well as simulations -- will likely set the ultimate limit on the smallest length scale that can be used to infer cosmological information from galaxy clustering.
We present a method for generating suites of dark-matter halo catalogs with only a few $N$-body simulations, focusing on making small changes to the underlying cosmology of a simulation with high precision. In the context of blind challenges, this allows us to reuse a simulation by giving it a new cosmology after the original cosmology is revealed. Starting with full $N$-body realizations of an original cosmology and a target cosmology, we fit a transfer function that displaces halos in the original so that the galaxy/HOD power spectrum matches that of the target cosmology. This measured trans…
We study the distribution of intragroup dark matter in small groups of dark matter halos of galaxy-like size in a LCDM cosmology. These groups are identified using a physical criterion and may be an appropriate representation of small galaxy groups. We quantify the amount of intragroup dark matter and characterize its distribution. We find that compact associations of halos, as well as those intermediate and loose groups, have rather flat intragroup dark matter profiles with logarithmic slopes of gamma ~0 and ~-0.2$, respectively. Hence, the intragroup dark matter of these halo systems does no…
In this talk I focus on how the modelling of the mass-observable relation and the halo mass function can impact the accuracy and precision of cosmological constraints inferred from galaxy clusters. I present a new analysis of clusters detected in mm wavelengths by the Planck satellite, highlighting the need of an improved description and calibration for the mass-observable relation.
In this paper we study the triaxial properties of dark matter haloes of a wide range of masses extracted from a set of cosmological N-body simulations. We measure the shape at different distances from the halo centre (characterised by different overdensity thresholds), both in three and in two dimensions. We discuss how halo triaxiality increases with mass, redshift and distance from the halo centre. We also examine how the orientation of the different ellipsoids are aligned with each other and what is the gradient in internal shapes for halos with different virial configurations. Our findings…
Individual extragalactic dark matter halos, such as those associated with nearby galaxies and galaxy clusters, are promising targets for searches for gamma-rays from dark matter annihilation. We review the predictions for the annihilation flux from individual halos, focusing on the effect of current uncertainties in the concentration-mass relation and the contribution from halo substructure, and also estimating the intrinsic halo-to-halo scatter expected. After careful consideration of recent simulation results, we conclude that the concentrations of the smallest halos, while well determined a…
While recent supernova cosmology research has benefited from improved measurements, current analysis approaches are not statistically optimal and will prove insufficient for future surveys. This paper discusses the limitations of current supernova cosmological analyses in treating outliers, selection effects, shape- and color-standardization relations, unexplained dispersion, and heterogeneous observations. We present a new Bayesian framework, called UNITY (Unified Nonlinear Inference for Type-Ia cosmologY), that incorporates significant improvements in our ability to confront these effects. W…
The concentrations of dark matter haloes provide crucial information about their internal structure and how it depends on mass and redshift -- the so-called concentration-mass-redshift relation, denoted $c(M,z)$. We present here an extensive study of the cosmology-dependence of $c(M,z)$ that is based on a suite of 72 gravity-only, full N-body simulations in which the following cosmological parameters were varied: $σ_{8}$, $Ω_{\mathrm{M}}$, $Ω_{\mathrm{b}}$, $n_{\mathrm{s}}$, $h$, $M_ν$, $w_{0}$ and $w_{\mathrm{a}}$. We characterize the impact of these parameters on concentrations for different…
We present the results obtained from the full-shape cosmology analysis of the redshift-space power spectra for 4 galaxy samples of the SDSS-III BOSS DR12 galaxy catalog over $0.2 < z < 0.75$. For the theoretical template, we use an emulator that was built from an ensemble set of $N$-body simulations, which enables fast and accurate computation of the redshift-space power spectrum of halos. Combining with the halo occupation distribution to model the halo-galaxy connection, we can compute the redshift-space power spectrum of BOSS-like galaxies in the flat $Λ$CDM cosmology. In our cosmology infe…
Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) or wave dark matter is an alternative theory designed to solve the small-scale problems faced by the standard cold dark matter proposal for the primary material component of the universe. It is made up of ultra-light axions having mass $\sim 10^{-22}$ eV that typically have de Broglie wavelength of several kpc, alleviating some of the apparent small-scale discrepancies faced by the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm. In this paper, we calculate the halo mass function for the fuzzy dark matter using a sharp-k window function and compare it with one calculated using numerical simul…
The structural and dynamic properties of the dark matter halos, though an important ingredient in understanding large-scale structure formation, require more conservative particle resolution than those required by halo mass alone in a simulation. This reduces the parameter space of the simulations, more severely for high-redshift and large-volume mocks which are required by the next-generation large sky surveys. Here, we incorporate redshift and cosmology dependence into an algorithm that assigns accurate halo properties such as concentration, spin, velocity, and spatial distribution to the su…
The halo mass function (HMF) is a critical element in cosmological analyses of galaxy cluster catalogs. We quantify the impact of uncertainties in HMF parameters on cosmological constraints from cluster catalogs similar to those from Planck, those expected from the Euclid, Roman and Rubin surveys, and from a hypothetical larger future survey. We analyse simulated catalogs in each case, gradually loosening priors on HMF parameters to evaluate the degradation in cosmological constraints. While current uncertainties on HMF parameters do not substantially impact Planck-like surveys, we find that t…
The splashback radius $R_{\rm sp}$, the apocentric radius of particles on their first orbit after falling into a dark matter halo, has recently been suggested as a physically motivated halo boundary that separates accreting from orbiting material. Using the SPARTA code presented in Paper I, we analyze the orbits of billions of particles in cosmological simulations of structure formation and measure $R_{\rm sp}$ for a large sample of halos that span a mass range from dwarf galaxy to massive cluster halos, reach redshift 8, and include WMAP, Planck, and self-similar cosmologies. We analyze the d…
Using cosmological N-body simulations, we study the abundance of local maxima (peaks) and minima (dips) identified in the smoothed distribution of halos and dark matter (DM) on scales of $10-100$s Mpcs. The simulations include Gaussian and local-type $f_{\rm NL}$ non-Gaussian initial conditions. The expression derived in the literature for the abundance (irrespective of height) of peaks for Gaussian fields is surprisingly accurate for the evolved halo and DM density fields for all initial conditions considered. Furthermore, the height distribution is very well fitted by a log-normal on quasi-l…
Recent advances in observational astronomy allow to study various groups of Dark Matter (DM) dominated objects from the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies to clusters of galaxies that span the mass range from $10^{6} M_{\odot}$ to $10^{15} M_{\odot}$. To analyze data of this divers collection of objects we used a simple toy model of spherical DM halo formation that was initially proposed by Peebles. This model introduced the concept of the epoch or redshift of halo formation. Using this concept we analyzed selected sample of DM dominated objects and we have found empirical correlations between t…
The evolution of galaxy cluster counts is a powerful probe of several fundamental cosmological parameters. A number of recent studies using this probe have claimed tension with the cosmology preferred by the analysis of the Planck primary CMB data, in the sense that there are fewer clusters observed than predicted based on the primary CMB cosmology. One possible resolution to this problem is systematic errors in the absolute halo mass calibration in cluster studies, which is required to convert the standard theoretical prediction (the halo mass function) into counts as a function of the observ…
In this paper we introduce the Farpoint simulation, the latest member of the Hardware/Hybrid Accelerated Cosmology Code (HACC) gravity-only simulation family. The domain covers a volume of (1000$h^{-1}$Mpc)$^3$ and evolves close to two trillion particles, corresponding to a mass resolution of $m_p\sim 4.6\cdot 10^7 h^{-1}$M$_\odot$. These specifications enable comprehensive investigations of the galaxy-halo connection, capturing halos down to small masses. Further, the large volume resolves scales typical of modern surveys with good statistical coverage of high mass halos. The simulation was c…
We present a new cosmological probe for galaxy clusters, the halo sparsity. This characterises halos in terms of the ratio of halo masses measured at two different radii and carries cosmological information encoded in the halo mass profile. Building upon the work of Balmes et al. (2014) we test the properties of the sparsity using halo catalogs from a numerical N-body simulation of ($2.6$ Gpc/h)$^3$ volume with $4096^3$ particles. We show that at a given redshift the average sparsity can be predicted from prior knowledge of the halo mass function. This provides a quantitative framework to infe…
Elucidating the particle physics nature of dark matter (DM) is one of the great challenges in modern science. The current lack of any direct DM detections in the laboratory heightens the need for astrophysical constraints, extending the search to DM models beyond the popular weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) scenario. We here apply the classical Rees-Ostriker-Silk cooling criterion for galaxy formation to models with ultralight axion DM, also known as fuzzy dark matter (FDM). The resulting constraints provide a heuristic framework for upcoming observations, and our approximate analysi…
This paper introduces Colossus, a public, open-source python package for calculations related to cosmology, the large-scale structure (LSS) of matter in the universe, and the properties of dark matter halos. The code is designed to be fast and easy to use, with a coherent, well-documented user interface. The cosmology module implements Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmologies including curvature, relativistic species, and different dark energy equations of state, and provides fast computations of the linear matter power spectrum, variance, and correlation function. The LSS module is conc…

Motivated by recent inferred form of the halo occupation distribution (HOD) of X-ray selected AGNs, in the COSMOS field by Allevato et al. (2012), we investigate the HOD properties of moderate X-ray luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (mXAGNs) using a simple model based on merging activity between dark matter halos (DMHs) in a $Λ$-CDM cosmology. The HODs and number densities of the simulated mXAGNs at $z=0.5$, under the above scenarios to compare with Allevato et al. (2012) results. We find that the simulated HODs of major and minor mergers, and the observed for mXAGNs are consistent among them.…
Precision cosmology has recently triggered new attention on the topic of approximate methods for the clustering of matter on large scales, whose foundations date back to the period from late '60s to early '90s. Indeed, although the prospect of reaching sub-percent accuracy in the measurement of clustering poses a challenge even to full N-body simulations, an accurate estimation of the covariance matrix of clustering statistics, not to mention the sampling of parameter space, requires usage of a large number (hundreds in the most favourable cases) of simulated (mock) galaxy catalogs. Combinatio…
One of the main predictions of excursion set theory is that the clustering of dark matter haloes only depends on halo mass. However, it has been long established that the clustering of haloes also depends on other properties, including formation time, concentration, and spin; this effect is commonly known as halo assembly bias. We use a suite of gravity-only simulations to study the dependence of halo assembly bias on cosmology; these simulations cover cosmological parameters spanning 10$σ$ around state-of-the-art best-fitting values, including standard extensions of the $Λ$CDM paradigm such a…
Counting galaxy number density with wide range sky surveys has been well adopted in researches focusing on revealing evolution pattern of different types of galaxies. As understood intuitively the astrophysics environment physics is intimated affected by cosmology priors with theoretical estimation or vise versa, or simply stating that the astrophysics effect couples the corresponding cosmology observations or the way backwards. In this article we try to quantify the influence on galaxy number density prediction at faint luminosity limit from the uncertainties in cosmology, and how much the un…
Surveys with submillimetre telescopes are revealing large numbers of gravitationally lensed high-redshift sources. I describe how, in practice, these lensed systems could be simultaneously used to estimate the values of cosmological parameters, test models for the evolution of the distribution of dark-matter halos and investigate the properties of the source population. Even the existing sample of lenses found with the Hershcel Space Observatory is enough to formally rule out the standard models of the evolving population of dark-matter halos, with the likely explanation a combination of baryo…
We explore a variety of statistics of clusters selected with cosmic shear measurement by utilizing both analytic models and large numerical simulations. We first develop a halo model to predict the abundance and the clustering of weak lensing selected clusters. Observational effects such as galaxy shape noise are included in our model. We then generate realistic mock weak lensing catalogs to test the accuracy of our analytic model. To this end, we perform full-sky ray-tracing simulations that allow us to have multiple realizations of a large continuous area. We model the masked regions on the …
We provide a quantitative analysis of the halo model in the context of massive neutrino cosmologies. We discuss all the ingredients necessary to model the non-linear matter and cold dark matter power spectra and compare with the results of N-body simulations that incorporate massive neutrinos. Our neutrino halo model is able to capture the non-linear behavior of matter clustering with a $\sim 20\%$ accuracy up to very non-linear scales of $k=10~h/$Mpc (which would be affected by baryon physics). The largest discrepancies arise in the range $k=0.5-1~h/$Mpc where the 1-halo and 2-halo terms are …

A profound assumption in peculiar velocity cosmology is $b_v=1$ at sufficiently large scales, where $b_v$ is the volume weighted halo(galaxy) velocity bias with respect to the matter velocity field. However, this fundamental assumption has not been robustly verified in numerical simulations. Furthermore, it is challenged by structure formation theory (BBKS, 1986, ApJ; Desjacques and Sheth, 2010, PRD), which predicts the existence of velocity bias (at least for proto-halos) due to the fact that halos reside in special regions (local density peaks). The major obstacle to measure the volume weigh…
