In a series of papers, Quesne and Tkachuk (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. \textbf{39}, 10909 (2006); Czech. J. Phys. \textbf{56}, 1269 (2006)) presented a $D+1$-dimensional $(β,β')$-two-parameter Lorentz-covariant deformed algebra which leads to a nonzero minimal measurable length. In this paper, the Lagrangian formulation of electrodynamics in a 3+1-dimensional space-time described by Quesne-Tkachuk algebra is studied in the special case $β'=2β$ up to first order over the deformation parameter $β$. It is demonstrated that at the classical level there is a similarity between electrodynamics in the presence of a minimal measurable length (generalized electrodynamics) and Lee-Wick electrodynamics. We obtain the free space solutions of the inhomogeneous Maxwell's equations in the presence of a minimal length. These solutions describe two vector particles (a massless vector particle and a massive vector particle). We estimate two different upper bounds on the isotropic minimal length. The first upper bound is near to the electroweak length scale $(\ell_{electroweak}\sim 10^{-18}\, m)$, while the second one is near to the length scale for the strong interactions $(\ell_{strong}\sim 10^{-15}\, m)$. The relationship between the Gaete-Spallucci nonlocal electrodynamics (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. \textbf{45}, 065401 (2012)) and electrodynamics with a minimal length is investigated.
The quantum electrodynamics in presence of background external fields is developed. Modern methods of local quantum physics allow to formulate the theory on arbitrarily strong possibly time-dependent external fields. Non-linear observables which depend only locally on the external field are constructed. The tools necessary for this formulation, the parametrices of the Dirac operator, are investigated.
We show that the commonly known conductor boundary conditions $E_{||}=B_\perp=0$ can be realized in two ways which we call 'thick' and 'thin' conductor. The 'thick' conductor is the commonly known approach and includes a Neumann condition on the normal component $E_\perp$ of the electric field whereas for a 'thin' conductor $E_\perp$ remains without boundary condition. Both types describe different physics already on the classical level where a 'thin' conductor allows for an interaction between the normal components of currents on both sides. On quantum level different forces between a conduct…
The mechanism for the generation of a dipole moment due to an external field is presented for the Born-Infeld charged particle. The 'polarizability coefficient' is calculated: it is proportional to the third power of the characteristic length in the Born-Infeld theory. Some physical implications are briefly discussed.
The mechanism for the generation of multipole moments due to an external field is presented for the Born-Infeld charged particle. The 'polarizability coefficient' for arbitrary l-pole moment is calculated. The l-th coefficient is proportional to the (2l+1)-th power of the characteristic length in the Born-Infeld theory. Physical implications are discussed.
We discuss the mapping of the conservative part of two-body electrodynamics onto that of a test charged particle moving in some external electromagnetic field, taking into account recoil effects and relativistic corrections up to second post-Coulombian order. Unlike the results recently obtained in general relativity, we find that in classical electrodynamics it is not possible to implement the matching without introducing external parameters in the effective electromagnetic field. Relaxing the assumption that the effective test particle moves in a flat spacetime provides a feasible way out.
Counterparts of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for scalar QED in an external electromagnetic field are derived. Exact structure and diagrammatic interpretation of the corresponding mass and polarization operators are obtained. It is shown that in the presence of an external field the final equations include an exact three-photon interaction vertex.
In the probe limit, we investigate the nonlinear electrodynamical effects of the both exponential form and the logarithmic form on the holographic paramagnetism-ferromagnetism phase transition in the background of a Schwarzschild-AdS black hole spacetime. Moreover, by comparing the exponential form of nonlinear electrodynamics with the logarithmic form of nonlinear electrodynamics and the Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics which has been presented in Ref.~\cite{Wu:2016uyj}, we find that the higher nonlinear electrodynamics correction makes the critical temperature smaller and the magnetic m…
We demonstrate the existence of quantum hair in electrodynamics and gravity using effective action techniques. In the case of electrodynamics we use the Euler-Heisenberg effective action while in the case of quantum gravity we use the unique effective action. We give a general formulation of these effects which applies to both theories and discuss analogies and differences between them. Furthermore, we present a QED analog to black hole evaporation. Spontaneous pair production in the external field of a ball of charge is analogous to Hawking radiation from black holes. Assuming spherical symme…
Vacuum effects in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED) with the topological Chern-Simons term are considered. The photon polarization operator is studied and the decay rate for the electron-positron photoproduction is presented as a function of the photon energy and external field strength. The radiatively induced electron mass shift in an external magnetic field is investigated. The electron self-energy in topologically massive (2+1)-QED at finite temperature and density is studied. The parity breaking part of the Yang-Mills action in the framework of the $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge f…
In the framework of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in external potentials, we introduce a method to compute the time-dependence of the expectation value of the current density for time-dependent homogeneous external electric fields. We apply it to the so-called Sauter pulse. For late times, our results agree with the asymptotic value due to electron-positron pair production. We correct, and compare to, a general expression derived by Serber for the linearization in the external field. Based on the properties of the current density, we argue that the appearance of enhanced quasi-particle densiti…
The influence of a magnetic field on the mass generation in 2+1 dimensional QED is considered. It is shown that the magnetic field is a catalyst of the generation of a fermion dynamical mass. The mass arises in the system with arbitrary number of fermions, not only with $N\leq 4$, as it is in the system without the magnetic field. The polarization tensor is calculated for a constant magnetic field.
We consider one-particle reducible (1PR) contributions to QED and scalar QED processes in external fields, at one-loop and two-loop order. We investigate three cases in detail: constant crossed fields, constant magnetic fields, and plane waves. We find that 1PR tadpole contributions in plane waves and constant crossed fields are non-zero, but contribute only divergences to be renormalised away. In constant magnetic fields, on the other hand, tadpole contributions give physical corrections to processes at one-loop and beyond. Our calculations are exact in the external fields and we give strong …
We advocate the study of external-field quantum electrodynamics with $N$ charged particle flavors. Our main focus is on the Heisenberg-Euler effective action for this theory in the large $N$ limit which receives contributions from all loop orders. The contributions beyond one loop stem from one-particle reducible diagrams. We show that specifically in constant electromagnetic fields the latter are generated by the one-loop Heisenberg-Euler effective Lagrangian. Hence, in this case the large $N$ Heisenberg-Euler effective action can be determined explicitly at any desired loop order. We demonst…
In this paper, we analytically investigate the effect of adding an external magnetic field in presence of Born-Infeld corrections to a holographic superconductor in the probe limit. The technique employed is based on the matching of the solutions to the field equations near the horizon and the asymptotic AdS region. We obtain expressions for the critical temperature and the condensation values explicitly to all orders in the Born-Infeld parameter. The value of the critical magnetic field is finally obtained and is found to get affected by the Born-Infeld parameter.
The generalized logarithmic electrodynamics with two parameters $β$ and $γ$ is considered. The indexes of refraction of light in the external magnetic field are calculated. In the case $β=γ$ we come to results obtained by P. Gaete and J. Helayël-Neto [7] (Eur.Phys.J. C\textbf{74}, 2816 (2014)). The bound on the values of $β$, $γ$ was obtained from the Biréfringence Magnétique du Vide (BMV) experiment. The symmetrical Belinfante energy-momentum tensor and dilatation current are found.
We review different definitions of the current density for quantized fermions in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. Several deficiencies in the popular prescription due to Schwinger and the mode sum formula for static external potentials are pointed out. We argue that Dirac's method, which is the analog of the Hadamard point-splitting employed in quantum field theory in curved space-times, is conceptually the most satisfactory. As a concrete example, we discuss vacuum polarization and the stress-energy tensor for massless fermions in 1+1 dimension. Also a general formula for th…
This paper is devoted to the study of interactions between stationary electromagnetic sources for the minimal and nonminimal CPT-odd photon sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), where we search mainly for physical phenomena not present in the Maxwell electrodynamics. First we consider the minimal CPT-odd sector, where the Lorentz violation is caused by the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, namely $\simε^{μναβ}\left(k_{AF}\right)_μA_νF_{αβ}$, and we treat the Lorentz breaking parameter $\left(k_{AF}\right)^μ$ perturbatively up to second order. We consider effects due to the presence of p…
Effects due to fermion-vacuum polarization by an external static magnetic field are considered in a two-dimensional noncompact curved space with a nontrivial topology. An expression for the vacuun angular momentum is obtained. Like the vacuum fermion number, it proves to be dependent on the global characteristics of the field and space.
We calculate the first order maximal acceleration corrections to the classical electrodynamics of a particle in external electromagnetic fields. These include additional dissipation terms, the presence of a critical electric field, a correction to the cyclotron frequency of an electron in a constant magnetic field and the power radiated by the particle. The electric effects are sizeble at the fields that are considered attainable with ultrashort $TW$ laser pulses on plasmas.
In a $U(1)_{\star}$-noncommutative (NC) gauge field theory we extend the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map to include the (gauge-invariance-violating) external current and formulate - to the first order in the NC parameter - gauge-covariant classical field equations. We find solutions to these equations in the vacuum and in an external magnetic field, when the 4-current is a static electric charge of a finite size $a$, restricted from below by the elementary length. We impose extra boundary conditions, which we use to rule out all singularities, $1/r$ included, from the solutions. The static charge prov…
Based on the matching method, we explore the effects of adding an external magnetic field on the $s$-wave holographic superconductor when the gauge field is in the form of the logarithmic nonlinear source. First, we obtain the critical temperature as well as the condensation operator in the presence of logarithmic nonlinear electrodynamics and understand that they depend on the nonlinear parameter $b$. We show that the critical temperature decreases with increasing $b$, which implies that the nonlinear gauge field makes the condensation harder. Then, we turn on the magnetic field in the bulk a…
In this work, we employ algebraic renormalization technique to show the renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory of the Lorentz and CPT violating QED. Essentially, we control the breaking terms by using a suitable set of external sources. Thus, with the symmetries restored, a perturbative treatment can be consistently employed. After showing the renormalizability, the external sources attain certain physical values, which allow the recovering of the starting physical action. The main result is that the original QED action presents the three usual independent renormalization param…
We derive the (Wilsonian) low energy effective Lagrangian for Quantum Electrodynamics under external constant magnetic field by integrating out all electrons except those in the lowest Landau level. We find the one-loop effective Lagrangian contains a marginal four-Fermi interaction with anomalous dimension, ${(\ln2)^2\over 2π^2}e^4$. Renormalization group analysis shows that the four-Fermi interaction will break chiral symmetry in QED if the external magnetic field is extremely strong, $B>10^{42}$ gauss, or if the Landau gap, $\sqrt{|eB|}>6.5 \times 10^{10}$ GeV.
Nonlinear electrodynamics, QED included, is considered against the Lorentz-noninvariant external field background, treated as an anisotropic medium. Hamiltonian formalism is applied to electromagnetic excitations over the background, and entities of electrodynamics of media, such as field inductions and intensities, are made sense of in terms of canonical variables. Both conserved and nonconserved generators of space-time translations and rotations are defined on the phase space, and their Hamiltonian equations of motion and Dirac bracket relations, different from the Poincaré algebra, are est…
We study nonlinear vacuum electrodynamics in a first-order formulation proposed by Plebański. By applying a Dirac constraint analysis, we derive an effective Hamiltonian, together with the equations of motion. We show that there exists a large class of potentials for which the effective Hamiltonian is bounded from below, while at the same time possessing stationary points in which the field strength acquires a nonzero vacuum expectation value. The associated spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry can in principle be detected by coupling the model to a suitable external current, or to gravity…
A singular configuration of an external static vector field in the form of a magnetic string polarizes the vacuum of a second-quantized theory on the plane orthogonal to the string axis. The most general boundary conditions at the punctured singular point that are compatible with the self-adjointness of two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian are considered. The dependences of the induced vacuum quantum numbers on the parameter of the self-adjoint extension, on the string flux, and on the choice of irreducible representation of the matrices in (2+1)-dimensional spacetime are disscussed.
This paper is dedicated to the study of interactions between external sources for the electromagnetic field in a model which exhibits Lorentz symmetry breaking. We investigate such interactions in the CPT-even photon sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), where the Lorentz symmetry breaking is caused by a background tensor $K_{(F)αβστ}$. Since the background tensor is very tiny, we treat it perturbatively up to first order and we focus on physical phenomena which have no counterpart in Maxwell electrodynamics. We consider effects related to field sources describing point-like charges, s…
We study the Topological Casimir effect, in which extra vacuum energy emerges as a result of the topological features of the theory, rather than due to the conventional fluctuations of the physical propagating degrees of freedom. We compute the corresponding topological term in quantum Maxwell theory defined on a compact manifold. Numerically, the topological effect is much smaller than the conventional Casimir effect. However, we argue that the Topological Casimir Effect is highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, which may help to discriminate it from the conventional Casimir effect. …
The Scale Magnetic Effect (SME) is the generation of electric current due to conformal anomaly in external magnetic field in curved spacetime. The effect appears in a vacuum with electrically charged massless particles. Similarly to the Hall effect, the direction of the induced anomalous current is perpendicular to the direction of the external magnetic field $\bf B$ and to the gradient of the conformal factor $τ$, while the strength of the current is proportional to the beta function of the theory. In massive electrodynamics the SME remains valid, but the value of the induced current differs …
Based on an analytic scheme and neglecting the back reaction effect several crucial properties of holographic $ s $- wave superconductors have been investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field in the background of a $ D $ dimensional Schwarzschild AdS space time. Inspired by low energy limit of heterotic string theory, in the present paper we replace the conventional Maxwell action by a Power Maxwell action. Immersing the holographic superconductors in an external static magnetic field the spatially dependent condensate solutions have been obtained analytically. Interestingly eno…
The excited states of a charged particle interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field and an external potential all decay, but such a particle should have a true ground state--one that minimizes the energy and satisfies the Schrödinger equation. We prove quite generally that this state exists for {\it all values} of the fine-structure constant and ultraviolet cutoff. We also show the same thing for a many-particle system under physically natural conditions.
A general problem of quantum field theories is the fact that the free vacuum and the vacuum for an interacting theory belong to different, non-equivalent representations of the canonical (anti-)commutation relations. In the external field problem of QED, we encounter this problem in the form that the Dirac time evolution for an external field with non-vanishing magnetic components will not satisfy the Shale-Stinespring condition, known to be necessary and sufficient for the existence of an implementation on the fermionic Fock space. Therefore, a second quantization of the time evolution in the…
In the present paper, dynamics of generalized charged particles are studied in the presence of external electromagnetic interactions. This particular extension of the free relativistic particle model lives in Non-Commutative $κ$-Minkowski space-time, compatible with Doubly Special Relativity, that is motivated to describe Quantum Gravity effects. Furthermore we have also considered the electromagnetic field to be dynamical and have derived the modified forms of Lienard-Wiechert like potentials for these extended charged particle models. In all the above cases we exploit the new and extended fo…
The generalized Born--Infeld electrodynamics with two parameters is investigated. In this model the propagation of a linearly polarized laser beam in the external transverse magnetic field is considered. It was shown that there is the effect of vacuum birefringence, and we evaluate induced ellipticity. The upper bounds on the combination of parameters introduced from the experimental data of BRST and PVLAS Collaborations were obtained. When two parameters are equal to each other, we arrive at Born--Infeld electrodynamics and the effect of vacuum birefringence vanishes. We find the canonical an…
We extend the Einstein-Maxwell-axion theory including into the Lagrangian cross-terms of the dynamo-optical type, which are quadratic in the Maxwell tensor, linear in the covariant derivative of the macroscopic velocity four-vector, and linear in the pseudoscalar (axion) field or its gradient four-vector. We classify the new terms with respect to irreducible elements of the covariant derivative of the macroscopic velocity four-vector of the electromagnetically active medium: the expansion scalar, acceleration four-vector, shear and vorticity tensors. Master equations of the extended axion elec…
In this paper we show that the basic external (i.e. not determined by the equations) object in Classical electrodynamics equations is a complex structure. In the 3-dimensional standard form of Maxwell equations this complex structure $\mathcal{I}$ participates implicitly in the equations and its presence is responsible for the so called duality invariance. We give a new form of the equations showing explicitly the participation of $\mathcal{I}$. In the 4-dimensional formulation the complex structure is extracted directly from the equations, it appears as a linear map $Φ$ in the space of 2-form…
