This paper produces a rate-compatible protograph LDPC code at 1k information blocklength with superior performance in both waterfall and error floor regions. The design of such codes has proved difficult in the past because the constraints imposed by structured design (protographs), rate-compatibility, as well as small block length, are not easily satisfied together. For example, as the block length decreases, the predominance of decoding threshold as the main parameter in coding design is reduced, thus complicating the search for good codes. Our rate-compatible protograph codes have rates ranging from 1/3 to 4/5 and show no error floor down to $10^{-6}$ FER.

In this paper, we present a method of constructing new families of LDPC block code ensembles formed by terminating irregular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. Using the accumulate-repeat-by-4-jagged-accumulate (AR4JA) protograph as an example, a density evolution analysis for the binary erasure channel shows that this flexible design technique gives rise to a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates and thresholds close to capacity. Protograph low-density-parity-check (LDPC) are considered to design near-capacity low-rate codes over the binary erasure channel (BEC) and binary additive white Gaussian noise (BIAWGN) channel. For protographs with degree-one variable nodes and doubly-generalized LDPC (DGLDPC) codes, conditions are derived to ensure equality of bit-error threshold and block-error threshold. Using this condition, low-rate codes with block-error threshold close to capacity are designed and shown to have better error rate performance than other existing codes.
In this paper asymptotic methods are used to form lower bounds on the free distance to constraint length ratio of several ensembles of regular, asymptotically good, protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. This work investigates protograph-based LDPC codes for the AWGN channel with OOK modulation. A non-uniform distribution of the OOK modulation symbols is considered to improve the power efficiency especially for low SNRs. To this end, a specific transmitter architecture based on time sharing is proposed that allows probabilistic shaping of (some) OOK modulation symbols. Tailored protograph-based LDPC code designs outperform standard schemes with uniform signaling and off-the-shelf codes by 1.1 dB for a transmission rate of 0.25 bits/channel use.
