In this paper we introduce a new notion of convergence of sparse graphs which we call Large Deviations or LD-convergence and which is based on the theory of large deviations. The notion is introduced by "decorating" the nodes of the graph with random uniform i.i.d. weights and constructing random measures on $[0,1]$ and $[0,1]^2$ based on the decoration of nodes and edges. A graph sequence is defined to be converging if the corresponding sequence of random measures satisfies the Large Deviations Principle with respect to the topology of weak convergence on bounded measures on $[0,1]^d, d=1,2$. We then establish that LD-convergence implies several previous notions of convergence, namely so-called right-convergence, left-convergence, and partition-convergence. The corresponding large deviation rate function can be interpreted as the limit object of the sparse graph sequence. In particular, we can express the limiting free energies in terms of this limit object.
The colored neighborhood metric for sparse graphs was introduced by Bollobás and Riordan. The corresponding convergence notion refines a convergence notion introduced by Benjamini and Schramm. We prove that even in this refined sense, the limit of a convergent graph sequence (with uniformly bounded degree) can be represented by a graphing. We study various topics related to this convergence notion such as: Bernoulli graphings, factor of i.i.d. processes and hyperfiniteness.
We use an inequality of Sidorenko to show a general relation between local and global subgraph counts and degree moments for locally weakly convergent sequences of sparse random graphs. This yields an optimal criterion to check when the asymptotic behaviour of graph statistics such as the clustering coefficient and assortativity is determined by the local weak limit. As an application we obtain new facts for several common models of sparse random intersection graphs where the local weak limit, as we see here, is a simple random clique tree corresponding to a certain two-type Galton-Watson bran…
We consider the model of hashing with linear probing and we establish the moderate and large deviations for the total displacement in sparse tables. In this context, Weibull-like-tailed random variables appear. Deviations for sums of such heavy-tailed random variables are studied in \cite{Nagaev69-1,Nagaev69-2}. Here we adapt the proofs therein to deal with conditioned sums of such variables and solve the open question in \cite{TFC12}. By the way, we establish the deviations of the total displacement in full tables, which can be derived from the deviations of empirical processes of i.i.d.\ ran…
This paper concerns the large deviations of a system of interacting particles on a random graph. There is no stochasticity, and the only sources of disorder are the random graph connections, and the initial condition. The average number of afferent edges on any particular vertex must diverge to infinity as $N\to \infty$, but can do so at an arbitrarily slow rate. These results are thus accurate for both sparse and dense random graphs. A particular application to sparse Erdos-Renyi graphs is provided. The theorem is proved by pushing forward a Large Deviation Principle for a `nested empirical m…
Consider the Erdős-Renyi random graph on n vertices where each edge is present independently with probability c/n, with c>0 fixed. For large n, a typical random graph locally behaves like a Galton-Watson tree with Poisson offspring distribution with mean c. Here, we study large deviations from this typical behavior within the framework of the local weak convergence of finite graph sequences. The associated rate function is expressed in terms of an entropy functional on unimodular measures and takes finite values only at measures supported on trees. We also establish large deviations for other …
For any fixed simple graph $H=(V,E)$ and any fixed $u>0$, we establish the leading order of the exponential rate function for the probability that the number of copies of $H$ in the Erdős--Rényi graph $G(n,p)$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+u$, assuming $n^{-κ(H)}\ll p\ll1$, with $κ(H) = 1/(2Δ)$, where $Δ\ge 1$ is the maximum degree of $H$. This improves on a previous result of Chatterjee and the second author, who obtained $κ(H)=c/(Δ|E|)$ for a constant $c>0$. Moreover, for the case of cycle counts we can take $κ$ as large as $1/2$. We additionally obtain the sharp upper tail for Scha…
This article gives an overview of the emerging literature on large deviations for random graphs. Written for the general mathematical audience, the article begins with a short introduction to the theory of large deviations. This is followed by a description of some large deviation questions about random graphs, and an outline of the recent progress on this topic. A more elaborate discussion follows, with a brief account of graph limit theory and its application in constructing a large deviation theory for dense random graphs. The role of Szemerédi's regularity lemma is explained, together with…
We present a general technique for computing large deviations of nonlinear functions of independent Bernoulli random variables. The method is applied to compute the large deviation rate functions for subgraph counts in sparse random graphs. Previous technology, based on Szemeredi's regularity lemma, works only for dense graphs. Applications are also made to exponential random graphs and three-term arithmetic progressions in random sets of integers.
In a recent paper, Caron and Fox suggest a probabilistic model for sparse graphs which are exchangeable when associating each vertex with a time parameter in $\mathbb{R}_+$. Here we show that by generalizing the classical definition of graphons as functions over probability spaces to functions over $σ$-finite measure spaces, we can model a large family of exchangeable graphs, including the Caron-Fox graphs and the traditional exchangeable dense graphs as special cases. Explicitly, modelling the underlying space of features by a $σ$-finite measure space $(S,\mathcal{S},μ)$ and the connection pr…
We study the asymptotics of large, moderate and normal deviations for the connected components of the sparse random graph by the method of stochastic processes. We obtain the logarithmic asymptotics of large deviations of the joint distribution of the number of connected components, of the sizes of the giant components, and of the numbers of the excess edges of the giant components. For the supercritical case, we obtain the asymptotics of normal deviations and the logarithmic asymptotics of large and moderate deviations of the joint distribution of the number of components, of the size of the …
This article provides a new toolbox to derive sparse recovery guarantees from small deviations on extreme singular values or extreme eigenvalues obtained in Random Matrix Theory. This work is based on Restricted Isometry Constants (RICs) which are a pivotal notion in Compressed Sensing and High-Dimensional Statistics as these constants finely assess how a linear operator is conditioned on the set of sparse vectors and hence how it performs in SRSR. While it is an open problem to construct deterministic matrices with apposite RICs, one can prove that such matrices exist using random matrices mo…
Let $\mathcal{G}(N,\frac 1Nt_N)$ be the Erdős-Rényi graph with connection probability $\frac 1Nt_N\sim t/N$ as $N\to\infty$ for a fixed $t\in(0,\infty)$. We derive a large-deviations principle for the empirical measure of the sizes of all the connected components of $\mathcal{G}(N,\frac 1Nt_N)$, registered according to microscopic sizes (i.e., of finite order), macroscopic ones (i.e., of order $N$), and mesoscopic ones (everything in between). The rate function explicitly describes the microscopic and macroscopic components and the fraction of vertices in components of mesoscopic sizes. Moreov…

We extend the $L^p$ theory of sparse graph limits, which was introduced in a companion paper, by analyzing different notions of convergence. Under suitable restrictions on node weights, we prove the equivalence of metric convergence, quotient convergence, microcanonical ground state energy convergence, microcanonical free energy convergence, and large deviation convergence. Our theorems extend the broad applicability of dense graph convergence to all sparse graphs with unbounded average degree, while the proofs require new techniques based on uniform upper regularity. Examples to which our the…
In this paper we consider random linear under-determined systems with block-sparse solutions. A standard subvariant of such systems, namely, precisely the same type of systems without additional block structuring requirement, gained a lot of popularity over the last decade. This is of course in first place due to the success in mathematical characterization of an $\ell_1$ optimization technique typically used for solving such systems, initially achieved in \cite{CRT,DOnoho06CS} and later on perfected in \cite{DonohoPol,DonohoUnsigned,StojnicCSetam09,StojnicUpper10}. The success that we achieve…
Eigenvalues of Wigner matrices has been a major topic of investigation. A particularly important subclass of such random matrices is formed by the adjacency matrix of an Erdős-Rényi graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ equipped with i.i.d. edge-weights. An observable of particular interest is the largest eigenvalue. In this paper, we study the large deviations behavior of the largest eigenvalue of such matrices, a topic that has received considerable attention over the years. We focus on the case $p = \frac{d}{n}$, where most known techniques break down. So far, results were known only for $\mathcal{G}_{…
Building on the techniques from the breakthrough paper of Harel, Mousset and Samotij, which solved the upper tail problem for cliques, we compute the asymptotics of the upper tail for the number of induced copies of the 4-cycle in the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$. We observe a new phenomenon in the theory of large deviations of subgraph counts. This phenomenon is that, in a certain (large) range of $p$, the upper tail of the induced 4-cycle does not admit a naive mean-field approximation.
In this paper we consider the problem of estimating the joint upper and lower tail large deviations of the edge eigenvalues of an Erdős-Rényi random graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$, in the regime of $p$ where the edge of the spectrum is no longer governed by global observables, such as the number of edges, but rather by localized statistics, such as high degree vertices. Going beyond the recent developments in mean-field approximations of related problems, this paper provides a comprehensive treatment of the large deviations of the spectral edge in this entire regime, which notably includes the well…
For the Erdős-Rényi random graph G(n,p), we give a precise asymptotic formula for the size of a largest vertex subset in G(n,p) that induces a subgraph with average degree at most t, provided that p = p(n) is not too small and t = t(n) is not too large. In the case of fixed t and p, we find that this value is asymptotically almost surely concentrated on at most two explicitly given points. This generalises a result on the independence number of random graphs. For both the upper and lower bounds, we rely on large deviations inequalities for the binomial distribution.
We consider systems of mean-field interacting diffusions, where the pairwise interaction structure is described by a sparse (and potentially inhomogeneous) random graph. Examples include the stochastic Kuramoto model with pairwise interactions given by an Erdős-Rényi graph. Our problem is to compare the bulk behavior of such systems with that of corresponding systems with dense nonrandom interactions. For a broad class of interaction functions, we find the optimal sparsity condition that implies that the two systems have the same hydrodynamic limit, which is given by a McKean-Vlasov diffusion.…
The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erdős--Rényi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-proba…
We investigate random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \geq 3$, and derive the large deviation rate for the probability that the capacity of the interlacement set in a macroscopic box is much smaller than that of the box. As an application, we obtain the large deviation rate for the probability that two independent interlacements have empty intersections in a macroscopic box. We also prove that conditioning on this event, one of them will be sparse in the box in terms of capacity. This result is an example of the entropic repulsion phenomenon for random interlacements.
We prove general nonlinear large deviation estimates similar to Chatterjee-Dembo's original bounds except that we do not require any second order smoothness. Our approach relies on convex analysis arguments and is valid for a broad class of distributions. Our results are then applied in three different setups. Our first application consists in the mean-field approximation of the partition function of the Ising model under an optimal assumption on the spectra of the adjacency matrices of the sequence of graphs. Next, we apply our general large deviation bound to investigate the large deviation …
For any finite colored graph we define the empirical neighborhood measure, which counts the number of vertices of a given color connected to a given number of vertices of each color, and the empirical pair measure, which counts the number of edges connecting each pair of colors. For a class of models of sparse colored random graphs, we prove large deviation principles for these empirical measures in the weak topology. The rate functions governing our large deviation principles can be expressed explicitly in terms of relative entropies. We derive a large deviation principle for the degree distr…
In this paper, we provide a proof for the Hanson-Wright inequalities for sparsified quadratic forms in subgaussian random variables. This provides useful concentration inequalities for sparse subgaussian random vectors in two ways. Let $X = (X_1, \ldots, X_m) \in \mathbb{R}^m$ be a random vector with independent subgaussian components, and $ξ=(ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_m) \in \{0, 1\}^m$ be independent Bernoulli random variables. We prove the large deviation bound for a sparse quadratic form of $(X \circ ξ)^T A (X \circ ξ)$, where $A \in \mathbb{R}^{m \times m}$ is an $m \times m$ matrix, and random vect…
