The norm of Cartan torsion plays an important role for studying of immersion theory in Finsler geometry. Indeed, Finsler manifold with unbounded Cartan torsion can not be isometrically imbedded into any Minkowski space. In this paper, we find two subclasses of (?, ?)-metrics which have bounded Cartan torsion. Then, we give two subclasses of (?, ?)-metrics whose bound on the Cartan torsions are independent of the norm of ?.
Using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for the time-optimal problem in coordinates of the first kind, we find extremals of abitrary left-invariant sub-Finsler quasimetric on the Cartan group defined by a distribution of rank two.
An (I,J,K)-generalized Finsler structure on a 3-manifold is a generalization of a Finslerian structure, introduced in order to separate and clarify the local and global aspects in Finsler geometry making use of the Cartan's method of exterior differential systems. In this paper, we show that there is a close relation between (I,J,1)-generalized Finsler structures and a class of contact circles, namely the so-called Cartan structures. This correspondence allows us to determine the topology of 3-manifolds that admit (I, J, 1)-generalized Finsler structures and to single out classes of (I, J, 1)-…
The Klein-Grifone approach to global Finsler geometry is adopted. The nullity distributions of the three curvature tensors of Cartan connection are investigated. Nullity distributions concerning certain relevant special Finsler spaces are considered. Concrete examples are given whenever the situation needs.
In this paper, we identify the Bott connection on the natural foliation of the projective sphere bundle of a Finsler manifold to the Chern connection of this manifold. As a consequence, the symmetrization of the Bott connection turns out to be the Cartan connection of the Finsler manifold. Following Liu-Zhang \cite{LiuZ}, the Cartan connection can also be obtained through an adiabatic limit process. Furthermore, a Chern-Simons type form is defined and its conformal properties are discussed.
The present paper unifies some aspects concerning the vertical Liouville distributions on the tangent (cotangent) bundle of a Finsler (Cartan) space in the context of generalized geometry. More exactly, we consider the big-tangent manifold $\mathcal{T}M$ associated to a Finsler space $(M,F)$ and of its $\mathcal{L}$-dual which is a Cartan space $(M,K)$ and we define three Liouville distributions on $\mathcal{T}M$ which are integrable. We also find geometric properties of both leaves of Liouville distribution and the vertical distribution in our context.
In this paper we study a sub-Finsler geometric problem on the free-nilpotent group of rank 2 and step 3. Such a group is also called Cartan group and has a natural structure of Carnot group, which we metrize considering the $\ell_\infty$ norm on its first layer. We adopt the point of view of time-optimal control theory. We characterize extremal curves via Pontryagin maximum principle. We describe abnormal and singular arcs, and construct the bang-bang flow.
This paper is a continuation of the work by the same authors on the Cartan group equipped with the sub-Finsler $\ell_\infty$ norm. We start by giving a detailed presentation of the structure of bang-bang extremal trajectories. Then we prove upper bounds on the number of switchings on bang-bang minimizers. We prove that any normal extremal is either bang-bang, or singular, or mixed. Consequently, we study mixed extremals. In particular, we prove that every two points can be connected by a piecewise smooth minimizer, and we give a uniform bound on the number of such pieces.
In this paper, we studied a Finsler space whose metric is given by an h-exponential change and obtain the Cartan connection coefficients for the change. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for an h-exponential change of Finsler metric to be projective.
In this paper, we first provide an updated survey of the geometry of complex Cartan spaces. New characterizations for some particular classes of complex Cartan spaces are pointed out, e.g. Landsberg-Cartan, strongly Berwald-Cartan and others. We introduce the Cartan-Randers spaces which offer examples of Berwald-Cartan and strongly Berwald-Cartan spaces. Then, we investigate the complex geodesic curves of a complex Cartan space, using the image by Legendre transformation ($\mathcal{L}-$ duality) of complex geodesic curves of a complex Finsler space. Assuming the weakly Kähler condition for a c…
The book "Handbook of Finsler geometry" has been included with a CD containing an elegant Maple package, FINSLER, for calculations in Finsler geometry. Using this package, an example concerning a Finsler generalization of Einstein's vacuum field equations was treated. In this example, the calculation of the components of the hv-curvature of Cartan connection leads to wrong expressions. On the other hand, the FINSLER package works only in dimension four. We introduce a new Finsler package in which we fix the two problems and solve them. Moreover, we extend this package to compute not only the g…
Recently we have obtained the Cartan connection for the Finsler space whose metric is given by an exponential change with an h-vector. In this paper, we discuss certain geometric properties of a Finslerian hyperspace subjected to an h-exponential change of metric.
We study the relation between an R-Cartan structure α and an (I, J, K)- generalized Finsler structure on a 3-manifold showing the difficulty in finding a general transformation that maps these structures each other. In some particular cases, the mapping can be uniquely determined by geometrical conditions.
Adopting the pullback approach to global Finsler geometry, the aim of the present paper is to provide new intrinsic (coordinate-free) proofs of intrinsic versions of the existence and uniqueness theorems for the Cartan and Berwald connections on a Finsler manifold. To accomplish this, the notions of semispray and nonlinear connection associated with a given regular connection, in the pullback bundle, is introduced and investigated. Moreover, it is shown that for the Cartan and Berwald connections, the associated semispray coincides with the canonical spray and the associated nonlinear connecti…
Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds admitting linear connections such that the parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. By the fundamental result of the theory \cite{V5} such a linear connection must be metrical with respect to the averaged Riemannian metric given by integration of the Riemann-Finsler metric on the indicatrix hypersurfaces. Therefore the linear connection is uniquely determined by its torsion tensor. If the torsion is zero then we have a classical Berwald manifolds. Otherwise the torsion is a strange data we need to express in term…
Some general Finsler connections are defined. Emphasis is being made on the Cartan tensor and its derivatives. Vanishing of the hv-curvature tensors of these connections characterizes Landsbergian, Berwaldian as well as Riemannian structures. This view point makes it possible to give a smart representation of connection theory in Finsler geometry and yields to a classification of Finsler connections. Some practical applications of these connections are also considered.
On a Finsler manifold $(M,L)$, we consider the change $L\longrightarrow\bar{L}(x,y)=e^{σ(x)}L(x,y)+β(x,y)$, which we call a $β$-conformal change. This change generalizes various types of changes in Finsler geometry: conformal, $C$-conformal, $h$-conformal, Randers and generalized Randers changes. Under this change, we obtain an explicit expression relating the Cartan connection associated to $(M,L)$ and the transformed Cartan connection associated to $(M,\bar{L})$. We also express some of the fundamental geometric objects (canonical spray, nonlinear connection, torsion tensors, ...etc.) of $(M…
We investigate the Cartan and Finsler geometry of the rotating Kepler problem, a limit case of the restricted three body problem that arises if the mass of the one of the primaries goes to zero. We show that the Hamiltonian for the rotating Kepler problem can be regarded as the Legendre transform of a certain family of Finsler metrics on the two-sphere. For very negative energy levels, these Finsler metrics are close to the round metric, and the associated flag curvature is hence positive. On the other hand, we show that the flag curvature can become negative once the energy level becomes suff…
Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds admitting linear connections such that the parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors (compatibi\-li\-ty condition). By the fundamental result of the theory \cite{V5} such a linear connection must be metrical with respect to the averaged Riemannian metric given by integration of the Riemann-Finsler metric on the indicatrix hypersurfaces. Therefore the linear connection (preserving the Finslerian length of tangent vectors) is uniquely determined by its torsion. If the torsion is zero then we have a classical Berwald …
The paper develops the Finsler-like geometry on the 1-jet space for the jet conformal Minkowski (JCM) metric, which naturally extends the Minkowski metric in the Chernov-Pavlov framework. To this aim there are determined the nonlinear connection, distinguished (d-) Cartan linear connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures. The field geometrical gravitational and electromagnetic d-models based on the JCM metric are discussed.
An absolute parallelism (AP-) space having Finslerian properties is called FAP-space. This FAP-structure is more wider than both conventional AP and Finsler structures. In the present work, more geometric objects as curvature and torsion tensors are derived in the context of this structure. Also second order tensors, usually needed for physical applications, are derived and studied. Furthermore, the anti-curvature and the W-tensor are defined for the FAP-structure. Relations between Riemannian, AP, Finsler and FAP structures are given. These relations facilitate comparison between results of a…
In this paper, we consider Randers change of some special $ (α, β)- $ metrics. First we find the fundamental metric tensor and Cartan tensor of these Randers changed $ (α, β)- $metrics. Next, we establish a general formula for inverse of fundamental metric tensors of these metrics. Finally, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Randers change of these $ (α, β)- $ metrics are projectively and locally dually flat.
Igarashi introduce the concept of $(α, β)$-metric in Cartan space $\ell^{n}$ analogously to one in Finsler space and obtained the basic important geometric properties and also investigate the special class of the space with $(α, β)$-metric in $\ell^{n}$ in terms of $ 'invariants' $. In the present paper we determine the $ 'invariants' $ in two different cases of deformed infinite series metric which characterize the special classes of Cartan spaces $\ell^{n}$.
Finsler metrics are direct generalizations of Riemannian metrics such that the quadratic Riemannian indicatrices in the tangent spaces of a manifold are replaced by more general convex bodies as unit spheres. A linear connection on the base manifold is called compatible with the Finsler metric if the induced parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. Finsler manifolds admitting compatible linear connections are called generalized Berwald manifolds. Compatible linear connections are the solutions of the so-called compatibility equations containing the torsion compone…
Berwald metrics are particular Finsler metrics which still have linear Berwald connections. Their complete classification is established in an earlier work, [Sz1], of this author. The main tools in these classification are the Simons-Berger holonomy theorem and the Weyl-group theory. It turnes out that any Berwald metric is a perturbed-Cartesian product of Riemannian, Minkowski, and such non-Riemannian metrics which can be constructed on irreducible symmetric manifolds of $rank > 1$. The existence of these metrics are well established by the above theories. The present paper has several new fe…
We show that monochromatic Finsler metrics, i.e., Finsler metrics such that each two tangent spaces are isomorphic as normed spaces, are generalized Berwald metrics, i.e., there exists an affine connection, possibly with torsion, that preserves the Finsler function
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R,M^3) the Finsler-like geometry (in the sense of distinguished (d-) connection, d-torsions and d-curvatures) of the rheonomic Berwald-Moor metric of order three. Some natural geometrical field theories (gravitational and electromagnetic) produced by the preceding rheonomic Berwald-Moor metric of order three are also exposed.
A linear connection on a Finsler manifold is called compatible to the metric if its parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds equipped with a compatible linear connection. Since the compatibility to the Finslerian metric does not imply the unicity of the linear connection in general, the first step of checking the existence of compatible linear connections on a Finsler manifold is to choose the best one to look for. A reasonable choice is introduced in \cite{V14} called the extremal compatible linear connection, w…
This article is an exposition of four loosely related remarks on the geometry of Finsler manifolds with constant positive flag curvature. <p> The first remark is that there is a canonical Kahler structure on the space of geodesics of such a manifold. <p> The second remark is that there is a natural way to construct a (not necessarily complete) Finsler n-manifold of constant positive flag curvature out of a hypersurface in suitably general position in complex projective n-space. <p> The third remark is that there is a description of the Finsler metrics of constant curvature on the 2-sphere in t…
In the present paper, we consider two different {\em Finsler} structures $L$ and $L^*$ on the same base manifold $M$, with no relation preassumed between them. \par Introducing the $π$-tensor field representing the difference between the Cartan connections associated with $L$ and $L^*$, we investigate the conditions, to be satisfied by this $π$-tensor field, for the geometric objects associated with $L$ and $L^*$ to have the same properties. Among the items investigated in the paper, we consider the properties of being a geodesic, a Jacobi field, a Berwald manifold, a locally Minkowskian manif…
We describe the induced geometry on several classes of Kodaira moduli spaces of rational curves in twistor spaces. By constructing connections and frames on the moduli spaces we build and review twistor theories pertaining to relativistic and non-relativistic geometries. Focussing on the cases of three- and five-dimensional moduli spaces we establish novel twistor theories of Newton-Cartan spacetimes. We generalise a canonical class of connections on Kodaira moduli spaces to encompass torsion and prove that in three dimensions deformations of the twistor space's holomorphic structure induce Ne…
The objective of this article is to build up a general theory of geometrical optics for spinning light rays in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic medium modeled on a Finsler manifold. The prerequisites of local Finsler geometry are reviewed together with the main properties of the Cartan connection used in this work. Then, the principles of Finslerian spinoptics are formulated on the grounds of previous work on Riemannian spinoptics, and relying on the generic coadjoint orbits of the Euclidean group. A new presymplectic structure on the indicatrix-bundle is introduced, which gives rise to a foli…
A new convenient method of describing flat convex compact sets is proposed. It generalizes classical trigonometric functions $\sin$ and $\cos$. Apparently, this method may be very useful for explicit description of solutions of optimal control problems with two-dimensional control. Using this method a series of sub-Finsler problems with two-dimensional control lying in an arbitrary convex set $Ω$ is investigated. Namely, problems on the Heisenberg, Engel, and Cartan groups and also Grushin's and Martinet's cases are considered. A particular attention is paid to the case when $Ω$ is a polygon.
The book contains a collection of works on Riemann-Cartan and metric-affine manifolds provided with nonlinear connection structure and on generalized Finsler-Lagrange and Cartan-Hamilton geometries and Clifford structures modelled on such manifolds. The choice of material presented has evolved from various applications in modern gravity and geometric mechanics and certain generalizations to noncommutative Riemann-Finsler geometry. The authors develop and use the method of anholonomic frames with associated nonlinear connection structure and apply it to a number of concrete problems: constructi…
The flag curvature of a Finsler metric is called a Riemannian quantity because it is an extension of sectional curvature in Riemannian geometry. In Finsler geometry, there are several non-Riemannian quantities such as the (mean) Cartan torsion, the (mean) Landsberg curvature and the S-curvature, which all vanish for Riemannian metrics. It is important to understand the geometric meanings of these quantities. In this paper, we study Finsler metrics of scalar curvature (i.e., the flag curvature is a scalar function on the slit tangent bundle) and partially determine the flag curvature when certa…
We prove that in a Finsler manifold with vanishing $χ$-curvature (in particular with constant flag curvature) some non-Riemannian geometric structures are geodesically invariant and hence they induce a set of non-Riemannian first integrals. Two alternative expressions of these first integrals can be obtained either in terms of the mean Berwald curvature, or as functions of the mean Cartan torsion and the mean Landsberg curvature.
We develop the method of anholonomic frames with associated nonlinear connection (in brief, N--connection) structure and show explicitly how geometries with local anisotropy (various type of Finsler--Lagrange--Cartan--Hamilton geometry) can be modeled in the metric--affine spaces. There are formulated the criteria when such generalized Finsler metrics are effectively induced in the Einstein, teleparallel, Riemann--Cartan and metric--affine gravity. We argue that every generic off--diagonal metric (which can not be diagonalized by coordinate transforms) is related to specific N--connection conf…
In the present paper, the $(HM',S,T)$-Cartan connections on pseudo-Finsler manifolds, introduced by A. Bejancu and H.R. Farran, are obtained by the natural almost complex structure arising from the nonlinear connection $HM'$. We prove that the natural almost complex linear connection associated to a $(HM',S,T)$-Cartan connection is a metric linear connection with respect to the Sasaki metric $G$. Finally we give some conditions for $(M', J, G)$ to be a Kähler manifold.
The aim of this paper is to develop on the 1-jet space J^1(R, M^n) the Finsler-like geometry (in the sense of distinguished (d-) connection, d-torsions, d-curvatures and some gravitational-like and electromagnetic-like geometrical models) attached to the (t,x)-conformal deformation of the Berwald-Moor metric.
I do not agree with the authors of papers arXiv:0806.2184 and arXiv:0901.1023v1 (published in Phys. Lett., respectively, B668 (2008) 453 and B676 (2009) 173). They consider that \textit{"In Finsler manifold, there exists a unique linear connection - the Chern connection ... It is torsion freeness and metric compatibility ... "}. There are well known results (for example, presented in monographs by H. Rund and R. Miron and M. Anastasiei) that in Finsler geometry there exist an infinite number of linear connections defined by the same metric structure and that the Chern and Berwald connections \…
