We study properties of a single-component (spin polarized) degenerate dipolar Fermi gas of 161Dy atoms using a hydrodynamic description. Under axially-symmetric trapping we suggest reduced one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) description of the same for cigar and disk shapes, respectively. In addition to a complete numerical solution of the hydrodynamic model we also consider a variational approximation of the same. For a trapped system under appropriate conditions, the variational approximation as well as the reduced 1D and 2D models are found to yield results for shape, size and chemical potential of the system in agreement with the full numerical solution of the three-dimensional (3D) model. For the uniform system we consider anisotropic sound propagation in 3D. An analytical result for anisotropic sound propagation in uniform dipolar degenerate Fermi gas is found to be in agreement with results of numerical simulation in 3D.
Trapped degenerate dipolar Bose and Fermi gases of cylindrical symmetry with the polarization vector along the symmetry axis are only stable for the strength of dipolar interaction below a critical value. In the case of bosons, the stability of such a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is investigated for different strengths of contact and dipolar interactions using variational approximation and numerical solution of a mean-field model. In the disk shape, with the polarization vector perpendicular to the plane of the disk, the atoms experience an overall dipolar repulsion and this fact sho…
Spinor bosons offer conceptually simple picture of macroscopic quantum behavior of topological order-by-disorder: Paramagnetic state of two-component dipolar bosons in orbitally degenerate zig-zag lattice is unstable against infinitezimal quantum fluctuations of orbitals towards developing non-local hidden order. Adjacent to the topological state locally correlated exact ground state with spontaneously quadrupoled lattice constant is realized for the broad parameter regime.
We study mass-imbalanced two-component Fermi mixtures, where one of the components consists of dipolar fermions. We specifically study the mass imbalances corresponding to the atomic ${}^{163}$Dy-${}^{40}$K and ${}^{53}$Cr-${}^{6}$Li mixtures. We study the onset of the $s$-wave superfluid phase, as a function of population imbalance and the dipolar interaction strength. We find the critical temperature and the Fermi surface deformations at the transition to depend on the dipolar interaction strength, where the critical temperature increases (decreases) with dipolar interaction strength for a m…
We consider a mixture of two-component Fermi and (one-component) dipolar Bose gases in which both dipolar interaction and s-wave scattering between fermions of opposite spins are tunable. We show that in the long wavelength limit, the anisotropy in the Fermi-Fermi interaction induced by phonons of the dipolar condensate can strongly enhance the scattering in the triplet channel. We investigate in detail the conditions for achieving optimal critical temperature at which the triplet superfluid begins to compete with the singlet superfluid.
We present a hydrodynamic model of ultracold, but not yet quantum condensed, dipolar Bosonic gases. Such systems present both $s$-wave and dipolar scattering, the latter of which results in anisotropic transport tensors of thermal conductivity and viscosity. This work presents an analytic derivation of the viscosity tensor coefficients, utilizing the methods established in [Wang et al., arXiv:2205.10465], where the thermal conductivities were derived. Taken together, these transport tensors then permit a comprehensive description of hydrodynamics that is now embellished with dipolar anisotropy…
We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultra-cold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation, but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orb…
We theoretically investigate a polarized dipolar Fermi gas in free expansion. The inter-particle dipolar interaction deforms phase-space distribution in trap and also in the expansion. We exactly predict the minimal quadrupole deformation in the expansion for the high-temperature Maxwell-Boltzmann and zero-temperature Thomas-Fermi gases in the Hartree-Fock and Landau-Vlasov approaches. In conclusion, we provide a proper approach to develop the time-of-flight method for the weakly-interacting dipolar Fermi gas and also reveal a scaling law associated with the Liouville's theorem in the long-tim…
We present a superfluid theory of a polarized dipolar Fermi gas. For two dipolar molecules each of which consists of two atoms with positive charge and negative charge, we derive an effective dipole-dipole pairing interaction. Using this pairing interaction, we show that the resulting BCS gap equation is not suffered from the well-known ultraviolet divergence, so that one can quantitatively predict superfluid properties of a dipolar Fermi gas. Using this cutoff-free superfluid theory, we examine the symmetry of the superfluid order parameter at T=0. We also discuss the deformation of the Fermi…
The object of study of this thesis are dipolar systems in the quantum degenerate regime. In general, dealing with many-body systems and evaluating their properties requires to deal with the Schrödinger equation. In the present study we employ different Monte Carlo methods, that are stochastic techniques that allow to find numerical solutions to it.
We consider a mixture of a spin-polarized Fermi gas and a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in which s-wave scattering between fermions and the quasiparticles of the dipolar condensate can result in an effective attractive Fermi-Fermi interaction anisotropic in nature and tunable by the dipolar interaction. We show that such an interaction can significantly increase the prospect of realizing a superfluid with a gap parameter characterized with a coherent superposition of all odd partial waves. We formulate, in the spirit of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field approach, a theory which allows …
We consider a uniform dipolar Fermi gas in two-dimensions (2D) where the dipole moments of fermions are aligned by an orientable external field. We obtain the ground state of the gas in Hartree-Fock approximation and investigate RPA stability against density fluctuations of finite momentum. It is shown that the density wave instability takes place in a broad region where the system is stable against collapse. We also find that the critical temperature can be a significant fraction of Fermi temperature for a realistic system of polar molecules.
We calculate the renormalized Fermi surface and the quasiparticle properties in the Fermi liquid phase of three-dimensional dipolar fermions to second order in the dipole-dipole interaction. Using parameters relevant to an ultracold gas of erbium atoms, we find that the second-order corrections typically renormalize the Hartree-Fock results by less than one percent. On the other hand, if we use the second-order correction to the compressibility to estimate the regime of stability of the system, the point of instability is already reached for a significantly smaller interaction strength than in…
We study the propagation of sound in a homogeneous dipolar gas at zero temperature, known as zero sound. We find that undamped sound propagation is possible only in a range of solid angles around the direction of polarization of the dipoles. Above a critical dipole moment, we find an unstable mode, by which the gas collapses locally perpendicular to the dipoles' direction.
The self-consistent field approach for the electric dipolar ultracold spin-1/2 fermions is discussed. Contribution of the exchange part of the electric dipole interaction is found. Hence we obtain a model of dipolar fermions beyond the self-consistent field approximation. It is shown that the exchange interaction of electric dipolar fermions depends on the spin-polarisation of the system. For instance the electric dipole exchange interaction equals to zero for spin-unpolarised systems, namely all low laying quantum states occupied by two-particles with opposite spins. In opposite limit of the …
Weyl superconductivity or superfluidity, a fascinating topological state of matter, features novel phenomena such as emergent Weyl fermionic excitations and anomalies. Here we report that an anisotropic Weyl superfluid state can arise as a low temperature stable phase in a 3D dipolar Fermi gas. A crucial ingredient of our model is a rotating external field that generates a direction-dependent two-body effective attraction. Experimental signatures are predicted for cold gases in radio-frequency spectroscopy. The finite temperature phase diagram of this system is studied and the transition tempe…
The collective excitations of a zero-temperature, spin-polarized, harmonically trapped, two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas are examined within the Thomas-Fermi von Weizsäcker hydrodynamic theory. We focus on repulsive interactions, and investigate the dependence of the excitation frequencies on the strength of the dipolar interaction and particle number. We find that the mode spectrum can be classified according to bulk modes, whose frequencies are shifted upward as the interaction strength is increased, and an infinite ladder of surface modes, whose frequencies are {\em independent} of the int…
A two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas in harmonic trap under rotation is studied by solving "ab initio" Kohn-Sham equations. The physical parameters used match those of ultracold gas of fermionic $^{23}Na^{40}K$ molecules, a prototype system of strongly interacting dipolar quantum matter, which has been created very recently. We find that, as the critical rotational frequency is approached and the system collapses into the lowest Landau level, an array of tightly packed quantum vortices develops, in spite of the non-superfluid character of the system. In this state the system looses axial symmet…
We show that an analogue to the classical Einstein-de Haas effect can appear in ultracold dipolar Fermi gases. The anisotropic nature of dipole-dipole interactions can lead to a transfer of magnetization into orbital angular momentum. Remarkably, distinct from a Bose-Einstein condensate, this transfer is accompanied by twisting motion, where individual spin components rotate in opposite directions with larger orbital angular momenta than the full system, possibly leading to easier experimental observation of the effect. This feature is induced by the deformation of the Fermi surface and the di…
We describe the creation of a long-lived spin-orbit-coupled gas of quantum degenerate atoms using the most magnetic fermionic element, dysprosium. Spin-orbit-coupling arises from a synthetic gauge field created by the adiabatic following of degenerate dressed states comprised of optically coupled components of an atomic spin. Because of dysprosium's large electronic orbital angular momentum and large magnetic moment, the lifetime of the gas is limited not by spontaneous emission from the light-matter coupling, as for gases of alkali-metal atoms, but by dipolar relaxation of the spin. This rela…
We develop a simple numerical method that allows us to calculate the Bardeen-Cooper-Schriefer (BCS) superfluid transition temperature (Tc) precisely for any interaction potential. We apply it to a polarised, ultracold Fermi gas with long-range, anisotropic, dipolar interactions and include the effects of anisotropic exchange interactions. We pay particular attention to the short-range behaviour of dipolar gasses and re-examine current renormalisation methods. In particular, we find that dimerisation of both atoms and molecules significantly hampers the formation of a superfluid. The end result…
We construct a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory that describes a spinless Fermi gas with long-range interaction. We apply this theory to a system of uniform dipolar fermionic polar molecules, which has attracted much attention recently, due to rapid experimental progress in achieving such systems. By calculating the anisotropic superfluid order parameter, and the critical temperature $T_{c}$, we show that, "hign $T_c$" superfluid can be achieved with a quite modest value of interaction strength for polar molecules. In addition, we also show that the presence of the Fock exc…
Based on the semi-classical theory, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dipolar Fermi gas. Through a self-consistent procedure, we numerically obtain the phase space distribution function at finite temperature. We show that the deformations in both momentum and real space becomes smaller and smaller as one increases the temperature. For homogeneous case, we also calculate pressure, entropy, and heat capacity. In particular, at low temperature limit and in weak interaction regime, we obtain an analytic expression for the entropy, which agrees qualitatively with our numerical result…
By means of the Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equation we investigate dynamical properties of a trapped, one-component Fermi gas at zero temperature, featuring the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole interaction. To this end, we determine an approximate solution by rescaling both space and momentum variables of the equilibrium distribution, thereby obtaining coupled ordinary differential equations for the corresponding scaling parameters. Based on previous results on how the Fermi sphere is deformed in the hydrodynamic regime of a dipolar Fermi gas, we are able to implement the relaxation-time…
We realize a two-component dipolar Fermi gas with tunable interactions, using erbium atoms. Employing a lattice-protection technique, we selectively prepare deeply degenerate mixtures of the two lowest spin states and perform high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy in an optical dipole trap. We identify a comparatively broad Feshbach resonance and map the interspin scattering length in its vicinity. The Fermi mixture shows a remarkable collisional stability in the strongly interacting regime, providing a first step towards studies of superfluid pairing, crossing from Cooper pairs to bound molecu…
Using a combination of results from exact mappings and from mean-field theory we explore the phase diagram of quasi-one-dimensional systems of identical fermions with attractive dipolar interactions. We demonstrate that at low density these systems provide a realization of a single-component one-dimensional Fermi gas with a generalized contact interaction. Using an exact duality between one-dimensional Fermi and Bose gases, we show that when the dipole moment is strong enough, bound many-body states exist, and we calculate the critical coupling strength for the emergence of these states. At hi…
Interacting two component Fermi gases are at the heart of our understanding of macroscopic quantum phenomena like superconductivity. Changing nature of the interaction is expected to head to novel quantum phases. Here we study the ground state of a two component fermionic gas in a harmonic potential with dipolar and contact interactions. Using a variational Wigner function we present the phase diagram of the system with equal but opposite values of the magnetic moment. We identify the second order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferronematic phase. Moreover, we show the impact of the exp…
The chiral p-wave (p_x \pm ip_y) superfluid has attracted significant attention in recent years, mainly because its vortex core supports a Majorana fermion which, due to its non-Abelian statistics, can be explored for implementing topological quantum computation. Mixing dipolar bosons with fermions in quasi-two-dimensional (2D) space offers the opportunity to use the roton minimum as a tool for engineering the phonon-induced attractive interaction between fermions. We study, within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach, the p-wave superfluid pairings in a quasi-2D dipolar Bose-Fermi mixture. We…
We analyse the coexistence of superfluid and density wave (stripe) order in a quasi-two-dimensional gas of dipolar fermions aligned by an external field. Remarkably, the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction allows for such a coexistence in a large region of the zero temperature phase diagram. In this region, the repulsive part of the interaction drives the stripe formation and the attractive part induces the pairing, resulting in a supersolid with $p$-wave Cooper pairs aligned along the stripes. From a momentum space perspective, the stability of the supersolid phase is due to the fac…
We examine the magnetostrictive position and momentum space distortions that occur in harmonically confined dipolar Bose and Fermi gases. Direct interactions give rise to position space magnetostriction and exchange interactions give rise to momentum space magnetostriction. While the position space magnetostriction is similar in Bose and Fermi systems, the momentum space magnetostriction is markedly different: the Bose gas momentum distribution distorts in the opposite sense to that of the Fermi gas. By relating exchange effects to short range correlations between the particles we discuss the …
An impurity atom immersed in an ultracold atomic Fermi gas can form a quasiparticle, so-called Fermi polaron, due to impurity-fermion interaction. We consider a three-dimensional homogeneous dipolar Fermi gas as a medium, where the interatomic dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) makes the Fermi surface deformed into a spheroidal shape, and, using a Chevy-type variational method, investigate the ground-state properties of the Fermi polaron: the effective mass, the momentum distribution of a particle-hole (p-h) excitation, the drag parameter, and the medium density modification around the impurity. …
Recently, a seminal STIRAP experiment allowed the creation of 40K-87Rb molecules in the rovibrational ground state [K.-K. Ni et al., Science 322, 231 (2008)]. In order to describe such a polarized dipolar Fermi gas in the hydrodynamic regime, we work out a variational time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach. With this we calculate dynamical properties of such a system as, for instance, the frequencies of the low-lying excitations and the time-of-flight expansion. We find that the dipole-dipole interaction induces anisotropic breathing oscillations in momentum space. In addition, after release fro…
The surface quadrupole mode of an harmonically trapped dipolar Fermi gas is studied in both the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. The anisotropy and long range effects of the dipolar force as well as the role of the trapping geometry are explicitly investigated. In the hydrodynamic regime the frequency is always slightly smaller than the $\sqrt{2}ω_\perp$ value holding for gases interacting with contact interactions. In the collisionless regime the frequency can be either pretty smaller or larger than the non-interacting value $2ω_\perp$, depending on the cloud aspect ratio. Our results …
We study the collapse of ultracold fermionic gases into inhomogeneous states due to strong dipolar interaction in both 2D and 3D. Depending on the dimensionality, we find that two different types of inhomogeneous states are stabilized once the dipole moment reaches a critical value $d>d_c$: the {\it stripe phase} and {\it phase separation} between high and low densities. In 2D, we prove that the stripe phase is always favored for $d\gtrsim d_c$, regardless of the microscopic details of the system. In 3D, the one-loop perturbative calculation suggests that the same type of instability leads to …
We report on the production of a degenerate Fermi gas of 53Cr atoms, polarized in the state F=9/2, m_F=-9/2, by sympathetic cooling with bosonic S=3, m_S=-3 52Cr atoms. We load in an optical dipole trap 3.10^4 53Cr atoms with 10^6 52Cr atoms. Despite this initial small number of fermionic atoms, we reach a final temperature of T=0.6 T_f (Fermi temperature), with up to 10^3 53Cr atoms. This surprisingly efficient evaporation stems from an inter-isotope scattering length |a_{BF}| = (85+/- 10) a_{Bohr} which is small enough to reduce evaporative losses of the fermionic isotope, but large enough t…
The interplay between crystallinity and superfluidity is of great fundamental and technological interest in condensed matter settings. In particular, electronic quantum liquid crystallinity arises in the non-Fermi liquid, pseudogap regime neighboring a cuprate's unconventional superconducting phase. While the techniques of ultracold atomic physics and quantum optics have enabled explorations of the strongly correlated, many-body physics inherent in, e.g., the Hubbard model, lacking has been the ability to create a quantum degenerate Fermi gas with interparticle interactions---such as the stron…
We present a general method for obtaining the exact static solutions and collective excitation frequencies of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar atomic interactions in the Thomas-Fermi regime. The method incorporates analytic expressions for the dipolar potential of an arbitrary polynomial density profile, thereby reducing the problem of handling non-local dipolar interactions to the solution of algebraic equations. We comprehensively map out the static solutions and excitation modes, including non-cylindrically symmetric traps, and also the case of negative scattering lengt…
Using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate transport properties of an interacting Fermi gas in an optical lattice with a confining trap after a sudden displacement of the trap center. In the regime of attractive interactions, the dipolar motion after the displacement can be classified into underdamped oscillations and overdamped relaxations, depending on the interaction strength. These numerical calculations are consistent with experimental results. In the regime of repulsive interactions, we predict a revival of the oscillations of the center of mass wh…
We develop an effective field theory to understand collective modes of a three-dimensional two-component Fermi superfluid with dipolar inter-particle interactions, which are modeled by an idealized separable potential. We first examine the phase transition of the system at zero temperature, as the fermionic superfluidity is known to be characterized by two competing order parameters. We find that for strong interactions there exists a regime where the two order parameters are out-of-phase and coupled, giving rise to an undamped massive Leggett mode. This is in addition to the well-known gaples…
The liquid and crystal phase of a single-component Fermi gas with dipolar interactions are investigated using quantum Monte Carlo methods in two spatial dimensions and at zero temperature. The dipoles are oriented by an external field perpendicular to the plane of motion, resulting in a purely repulsive 1/r^3 interaction. In the liquid phase we calculate the equation of state as a function of the interaction strength and other relevant properties characterizing the Fermi-liquid behavior: effective mass, discontinuity at the Fermi surface and pair correlation function. In the high density regim…
We consider a mixture of a two-component Fermi gas and a single-component dipolar Bose gas in a square optical lattice and reduce it into an effective Fermi system where the Fermi-Fermi interaction includes the attractive interaction induced by the phonons of a uniform dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Focusing on this effective Fermi system in the parameter regime that preserves the symmetry of $D_4$, the point group of a square, we explore, within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field theory, the phase competition among density wave orderings and superfluid pairings. We construct the matrix…
We derive the density functional for the ground-state energy of a two-dimensional, spin-polarized gas of neutral fermionic atoms with magnetic-dipole interaction, in the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximation. For many atoms in a harmonic trap, we give analytical solutions for the single-particle spatial density and the ground-state energy, in dependence on the interaction strength, and we discuss the weak-interaction limit that is relevant for experiments. We then lift the restriction of full spin polarization and account for a time-independent inhomogeneous external magnetic field. The field stren…
Density-functional theory is utilized to investigate the zero-temperature transition from a Fermi liquid to an inhomogeneous stripe, or Wigner crystal phase, predicted to occur in a one-component, spin-polarized, two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas. Correlations are treated semi-exactly within the local-density approximation using an empirical fit to Quantum Monte Carlo data. We find that the inclusion of the nonlocal contribution to the Hartree-Fock energy is crucial for the onset of an instability to an inhomogeneous density distribution. Our density-functional theory supports a transition to …

Under the framework of the semiclassical theory, we investigate the equilibrium-state properties of a spin polarized dipolar Fermi gas through full numerical calculation. We show that the Fermi surfaces in both real and momentum spaces are stretched along the attractive direction of dipolar interaction. We further verify that the deformed Fermi surfaces can be well approximated by ellipsoids. In addition, the deformation parameters slightly depend on the local real- and momentum-space densities. We also study the interaction strength dependence of the energy and real- and momentum-space densit…
We investigate topological supersolidity of dipolar Fermi gases in a spin-dependent 2D optical lattice. Numerical results show that the topological supersolid states can be synthesized via the combination of topological superfluid states with the stripe order, where the topological superfluid states generated with dipolar interaction possess the $Δ_{x}+iΔ_{y}$ order, and it is of D class topological classification. By adjusting the ratio between hopping amplitude $t_{x}/t_{y}$ and interaction strength $U$ with dipole orientation $ϕ\approx \fracπ{4}$, the system will undergo phase transitions a…
Strong particle-plasmon interaction in electronic systems can lead to composite \emph{hole-plasmon} excitations. We investigate the emergence of similar composite quasiparticles in ultracold dipolar Fermi liquids originating from the long-range dipole-dipole interaction. We use the $G_0W$ technique with an effective interaction obtained from the static structure factor to calculate the quasiparticle properties and single-particle spectral function. We first demonstrate that within this formalism a very good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results could be achieved over a wide range of c…
We study the interplay between the long- and short-range interaction of a one-dimensional optical lattice system of two-component dipolar fermions by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The atomic density profile, pairing-pairing correlation function, and the compressibility are calculated in the ground state, from which we identify the parameter region of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing state, half-metal (HM) state, FFLO-HM state, and the normal polarized state, and thus the phase diagram in the coordinates of the long- and short-range interaction streng…
We study the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional spin-polarized fluid of dipolar fermions within the Euler-Lagrange Fermi-hypernetted-chain approximation. Our method is based on the solution of a scattering Schrödinger equation for the "pair amplitude" $\sqrt{g(r)}$, where $g(r)$ is the pair distribution function. A key ingredient in our theory is the effective pair potential, which includes a bosonic term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations and a fermionic contribution from kinetic energy and exchange, which is tailored to reproduce the Hartree-Fock limit at weak coupling. Very good a…
Understanding the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is one of the central issues in condensed matter physics. Such interplay induced nodal structure of superconducting gap is widely believed to be a signature of exotic pairing mechanism (not phonon mediated) to achieve unconventional superconductivity, such as in heavy fermion, high $T_c$, and organic superconductors. Here we report a new mechanism to drive the interplay between magnetism and superfluidity via the spatially anisotropic interaction. This scheme frees up the usual requirement of suppressing long-range magnetic or…
The stability of an unpolarized two-component dipolar Fermi gas is studied within mean-field theory. Besides the known instability towards spontaneous magnetization with Fermi sphere deformation, another instability towards spontaneous formation of a spin-orbit coupled phase with a Rashba-like spin texture is found. A phase diagram is presented and consequences are briefly discussed.
We study the relaxation and damping dynamics of an ultracold, but not quantum degenerate, gas consisting of dipolar particles. These simulations are performed using a direct simulation Monte Carlo method and employing the highly anisotropic differential cross section of dipoles in the Wigner threshold regime. We find that both cross-dimensional relaxation and damping of breathing modes occur at rates that are strongly dependent on the orientation of the dipole moments relative to the trap axis. The relaxation simulations are in excellent agreement with recent experimental results in erbium. Th…
