Future redshift-drift measurements (also known as Sandage-Loeb signal) will be crucial to probe the so called "redshift desert", thus providing a new tool for cosmological studies. In this paper we quantify the ability of a future measurement of the Sandage-Loeb signal by a CODEX-like spectrograph to constrain a phenomenological parametrization of dynamical dark energy, specifically by obtaining constraints on $w_0$ and $w_a$. We also demonstrate that if used alongside CMB data, the Sandage-Loeb measurements will be able to break degeneracies between expansion parameters, thus greatly improving cosmological constraints.
An expression for the average redshift drift in a statistically homogeneous and isotropic dust universe is given. The expression takes the same form as the expression for the redshift drift in FLRW models. It is used for a proof-of-principle study of the effects of backreaction on redshift drift measurements by combining the expression with two-region models. The study shows that backreaction can lead to positive redshift drift at low redshifts, exemplifying that a positive redshift drift at low redshifts does not require dark energy. Moreover, the study illustrates that models without a dark …
Earlier studies have conjectured that redshift drift is described by spatially averaged quantities and thus becomes positive if the average expansion of the Universe accelerates. This conclusion is reevaluated here by considering exact light propagation in a simple toy-model with average accelerated expansion. The toy-model and light propagation setup is explicitly designed for concordance between spatial averages and averages along light rays. While it is verified that redshift-distance relations are well described by average quantities in this setup, it is found that the redshift drift is no…

We introduce an algorithm to estimate the redshift distribution of a sample of galaxies selected photometrically given a subsample with measured spectroscopic redshifts. The approach uses a non-parametric Voronoi tessellation density estimator to interpolate the galaxy distribution in the redshift and photometric color space. We test the method on a mock dataset with a known color-redshift distribution. We find that the Voronoi tessellation estimator performs well at reconstructing the tails of the redshift distribution of individual galaxies and gives unbiased estimates of the first and secon…
We consider the redshift drift and position drift associated with astrophysical sources in a formalism that is suitable for describing emitters and observers of light in an arbitrary spacetime geometry, while identifying emitters of a given null-geodesic bundle that arrives at the observer worldline. We then restrict the situation to the special case of a Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) geometrical structure, and solve for light rays propagating through the structure with arbitrary impact parameters, i.e., with arbitrary angles of entry into the LTB structure. The redshift drift signal emitted by …
We propose a new method for probing the time variation of the effective Newton's constant $G_{\rm eff}$, based on the optimal redshift weighting scheme, and demonstrate the efficacy using the DESI galaxy spectroscopic survey. We find that with the optimal redshift weights, the evolution of $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ can be significantly better measured: the uncertainty of $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ can be reduced by a factor of $2.2\sim12.8$ using the DESI BGS sample at $z \lesssim0.45$, and by a factor of $1.3\sim4.4$ using the DESI ELG sample covering $0.65\lesssim z\lesssim1.65$.
Dark energy affects the Hubble expansion rate (namely, the expansion history) $H(z)$ by an integral over $w(z)$. However, the usual observables are the luminosity distances or the angular diameter distances, which measure the distance-redshift relation. Actually, dark energy affects the distances (and the growth factor) by a further integration over functions of $H(z)$. Thus, the direct measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ at different redshifts are of great importance for constraining the properties of dark energy. In this paper, we show how the typical dark energy models, for example,…
We investigate the effect of the redshift drift in strong gravitational lensing. The redshift drift produces a time variation of $i)$ the apparent position of a lensed source and $ii)$ the time delay among incoming signals from different images. We dub these effects as angular drift and time delay drift, respectively, and analyze their relevance in cosmology.
As the Universe expands, the redshift of distant sources changes with time. Here we discuss gravitational lensing phenomena that are consequence of the redshift drift between lensed source, gravitational lens, and observer. When the source is located very close to the drifting caustics, a pair of images could occur (or disappear) because of the cosmological expansion. Furthermore, lensing systems act as signal converters of the redshift drift. The angular position, magnification, distortion, and time delay of already existing multiple images change. We estimate the expected frequency of these …
It is well known that positive values of redshift drift is a signature of dark energy within the conventionally studied Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe models. Here we show -- without making assumptions on the metric tensor of the Universe -- that redshift drift is a promising direct probe of violation of the strong energy condition within the theory of general relativity.
Double source lensing, with two sources lensed by the same foreground galaxy, involves the distance between each source and the lens and hence is a probe of the universe away from the observer. The double source distance ratio also reduces sensitivity to the lens model and has good complementarity with standard distance probes. We show that using this technique at high redshifts $z>1$, to be enabled by data from the Euclid satellite and other surveys, can give insights on dark energy, both in terms of $w_0$-$w_a$ and redshift binned density. We find a dark energy figure of merit of 245 from co…
We develop a cosmographic framework for analysing redshift drift signals of nearby sources model-independently, i.e., without making assumptions about the metric description of the Universe. We show that the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) prediction is altered nontrivially by regional anisotropies and inhomogeneities. In particular, we find that the position drift of the sources is nontrivially linked to the redshift drift signal. The redshift drift signal for nearby sources might be formulated in terms of an effective deceleration parameter, which reduces to the FLRW deceleratio…
We consider redshift drift in a general space-time as expressed in terms of physically interpretable multipole series. An important realisation from the derived results is that redshift drift cannot in general be thought of as a direct probe of the average expansion rate of the Universe due to the presence of structure along the light beams from the astrophysical sources to the observer. We also predict the general presence of a dipolar and a quadrupolar offset in the detection of redshift drift for observers placed in locally anisotropic environments.
The redshift drift, the change of cosmological redshift with time, is a direct consequence of the expansion of the Universe. Thus the measurement of the cosmological redshift drift will offer a direct test of our models of cosmology. The magnitude of the effect is very small, i.e. the spectral shift is of order of $10^{-10} - 10^{-9}$ over the period of a decade, but the next generation facilities such as ELT and SKA will be able to directly detect the expansion of our Universe by the year 2040. In this paper we focus on detectebility of this effect, including strategies of overcoming the kine…
In this paper, we quantify the ability of multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars (QSOs) to constrain several theories of modified gravity, including the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati braneworld scenario, generalized Chaplygin gas, $f(T)$ modified gravity, and Modified Polytropic Cardassian model. Recently released sample of 1598 quasars with X-ray and UV flux measurements in the redshift range of $0.036\leq z \leq 5.1003$, as well as a compilation of 120 intermediate-luminosity radio quasars covering the redshift of $0.46 < z < 2.76$ are respectively used as standard probes at higher redshif…
High precision astrometry now enables to measure the time drift of astrophysical observables in real time, hence providing new ways to probe different cosmological models. This article presents a general derivation of the redshift and direction drifts for general observers. It is then applied to the standard cosmological framework of a Friedmann-Lemaitre space- time including all effects at first order in the cosmological perturbations, as well as in the class of spatially anisotropic universe models of the Bianchi I family. It shows that for a general observer, the direction drift splits into…
Redshift-space distortions are a sensitive probe of the growth of large-scale structure. In the linear regime, redshift-space distortions are fully described by the multipoles of the two-point correlation function. In the nonlinear regime, however, higher-order statistics are needed to capture the full information of the galaxy density field. In this paper, we show that the redshift-space line correlation function--which is a measure of Fourier phase correlations--is sensitive to the nonlinear growth of the density and velocity fields and to the nonlinear mapping between real and redshift spac…
Redshift drift is the phenomenon whereby the observed redshift between an emitter and observer comoving with the Hubble flow in an expanding FLRW universe will slowly evolve -- on a timescale comparable to the Hubble time. There are nevertheless serious astrometric proposals for actually observing this effect. We shall however pursue a more abstract theoretical goal, and perform a general cosmographic analysis of this effect, eschewing (for now) dynamical considerations in favour of purely kinematic symmetry considerations and Taylor series expansions based on FLRW spacetimes. We shall develop…
The redshift drift is a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, but choosing a fiducial model one can also use it to constrain the model parameters. We compare the constraining power of redshift drift measurements by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), as studied by Liske {\it et al.} (2008), with that of two recently proposed alternatives: the cosmic accelerometer of Eikenberry {\it et al.} (2020), and the differential redshift drift of Cooke (2020). We find that the cosmic accelerometer with a 6-year baseline leads to weaker constraints than those of the ELT (by $60\%$), but with …
We present a numerical analysis supporting the evidence that the redshift evolution of the drifting coefficient of the field cluster mass function is capable of breaking several cosmic degeneracies. This evidence is based on the data from the CoDECS and DUSTGRAIN-pathfinder simulations performed separately for various non-standard cosmologies including coupled dark energy, $f(R)$ gravity and combinations of $f(R)$ gravity with massive neutrinos as well as for the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. We first numerically determine the field cluster mass functions at various redshifts in the range of $0\l…
Mapping the expansion history of the universe is a compelling task of physical cosmology, especially in the context of the observational evidence for the recent acceleration of the universe, which demonstrates that canonical theories of cosmology and particle physics are incomplete and that there is new physics still to be discovered. Cosmography is a phenomenological approach to cosmology, where (with some caveats) physical quantities are expanded as a Taylor series in the cosmological redshift $z$, or analogous parameters such as the rescaled redshift $y=z/(1+z)$ or the logarithmic redshift …
We investigate the fraction of baryon mass in intergalactic medium ($f_\mathrm{IGM}$), using 18 well-localized FRBs in the redshift range $z\in (0.0039,0.66)$. We construct a five-parameter Bayesian inference model, with the probability distributions of dispersion measures (DM) of IGM and host galaxy properly taken into account. To check the possible redshift evolution, we parameterize $f_\mathrm{IGM}$ as a mildly evolving function of redshift, $f_\mathrm{IGM}=f_\mathrm{IGM,0}[1+αz/(1+z)]$. By simultaneously constraining five parameters, we get $f_\mathrm{IGM,0} = 0.92^{+0.06}_{-0.12}$ and $α=…
We apply the Minkowski tensor statistics to three dimensional Gaussian random fields. Minkowski tensors contain information regarding the orientation and shape of excursion sets, that is not present in the scalar Minkowski functionals. They can be used to quantify globally preferred directions, and additionally provide information on the mean shape of subsets of a field. This makes them ideal statistics to measure the anisotropic signal generated by redshift space distortion in the low redshift matter density field. We review the definition of the Minkowski tensor statistics in three dimension…

We present measurements of the spatial clustering statistics in redshift space of various scalar field modified gravity simulations. We utilise the two-point and the three-point correlation functions to quantify the spatial distribution of dark matter halos within these simulations and thus discern between the models. We compare $Λ$CDM simulations to various modified gravity scenarios and find consistency with previous work in terms of 2-point statistics in real and redshift-space. However using higher order statistics such as the three-point correlation function in redshift space we find sign…
