Analysis is performed of calculations of the elastic scattering differential cross sections of pions on the $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni and $^{208}$Pb nuclei at energies from 130 to 290 MeV basing on the microscopic optical potential (OP) constructed as an optical limit of a Glauber theory. Such an OP is defined by the corresponding target nucleus density distribution function and by the elementary $πN$ amplitude of scattering. The three (say, "in-medium") parameters of the $πN$ scattering amplitude: total cross section, the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward $πN$ amplitude, and the slope parameter, were obtained by fitting them to the data on the respective pion-nucleus cross sections calculated by means of the corresponding relativistic wave equation with the above OP. A difference is discussed between the best-fit "in-medium" parameters and the "free" parameters of the $πN$ scattering amplitudes known from the experimental data on scattering of pions on free nucleons.
The experimental discovery that the nucleus is approximately transparent to low energy pions is reviewed. The consequences of this for nuclear deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan interactions are discussed. I argue that low energy nucleus data imply that there is little nuclear enhancement of the pion cloud of a nucleon, and try to interpret this in terms of nucleon-nucleon correlations.
In the scattering of positive pions by nuclei the double-charge-exchange (DCX) reaction creates the possibility of formation of pionic atom states in the vicinity of the threshold of this reaction. These quasi stationary states can manifest themselves as resonances in the elastic scattering cross section. The strength and shape of these resonances is strongly affected by an instability of the nucleus created in the DCX channel. It is shown that this mechanism can explain oscillation structures in the excitation function observed in scattering of low-energy positive pions from $^{12}\text{C}$.
A self-consistent symmetry arises when the nucleon angular momentum j and the isospin t are coupled to a grand spin G. Closed G shells become sources of a classical pion field with a hedgehog shape. Although the amplitude of the pion field, as measured by the chiral angle, is small, it is found to perturb significantly the energies of the nucleon orbits.
We analyse pion-nucleus reactions in a microscopic transport model of the BUU type, which propagates nucleons, pions, deltas and N(1440)-resonances explicitly in space and time. In particular we examine pion absorption and inelastic scattering cross sections for pion kinetic energies T(pi) =85-315MeV and various target masses. In general, the mass-dependence of the experimental data is well described for energies up to the delta-resonance (\approx 160 MeV) while the absorption cross sections are somewhat overestimated for the higher energies. In addition we study the possible dynamical effects…
The nuclear sigma term is calculated including the nuclear matrix element of the derivative of the NN interaction with respect to the quark mass, $m_q\frac{\partial V_{NN}}{\partial m_q}$. The NN potential is evaluated in the skyrmion-skyrmion picture within the quantized product ansatz. The contribution of the NN potential to the nuclear sigma term provides repulsion to the pion-nucleus interaction. The strength of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential is estimated including such contribution. The results are consistent with the analysis of the experimental data.
Predictions of the existence of well-defined deeply bound pionic atom states for heavy nuclei and the eventual observation of such states by the (d,3He) reaction have revived interest in the pion-nucleus interaction at threshold and in its relation to the corresponding pion-nucleon interaction. Explanation of the 'anomalous' s-wave repulsion in terms of partial restoration of chiral symmetry and/or in terms of energy-dependence effects have been tested in global fits to pionic atom data and in a recent dedicated elastic scattering experiment. The role of neutron density distributions in this c…
The production of pions emitted backward in inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions is analyzed within the impulse approximation in the framework of the dual parton model. We focus on the $Q^2$-dependence of the multiplicity of negative pions, normalized to the total cross section of the reaction $ν+ A \to μ+ X$. The inclusion of planar (one-Reggeon exchange) and cylindrical (one-Pomeron exchange) graphs leads to a multiplicity that decreases as $Q^2$ increases, in agreement with recent measurements carried out at CERN by the NOMAD collaboration. A realistic treatment of the high momentum tail…
Dynamics of the nuclear fragmentations and the charge exchange reactions in pion-nucleus collisions near the $Δ$(1232) resonance energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics (LQMD) transport model. An isospin, momentum and density-dependent pion-nucleon potential is implemented in the model, which influences the pion dynamics, in particular the kinetic energy spectra, but weakly impacts the fragmentation mechanism. The absorption process in pion-nucleon collisions to form the $Δ$(1232) resonance dominates the heating mechanism of target nucleus. The excitation e…
Experimental data on the pion-nucleus total cross sections are analyzed in terms of the optimal resonances predictions (OR). The OR-predictions are found in a good agreement with the actual experimental data in the region corresponding to the Delta(1236) resonance in elementary pi-N scattering. The essential signatures of the optimal resonances are experimentally verified with high accuracy.
Pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung offers a possibility of measuring the structure functions of pion-Compton scattering from a study of the small-momentum-transfer region where the bremsstrahlung reaction is dominated by the single-photon-exchange mechanism. The corresponding cross-section distribution is characterized by a sharp peak at small momentum transfers. But there is also a hadronic contribution which is smooth and constitutes an undesired background. In this communication the modification of the single-photon exchange amplitude by multiple-Coulomb scattering is investigated as well as the C…
We calculate the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus optical potential using a unitarized chiral approach that has been previously used to simultaneously describe pionic hydrogen and deuterium data as well as low energy pi N scattering in the vacuum. This energy dependent model allows for additional isoscalar parts in the potential from multiple rescattering. We consider Pauli blocking and pion polarization in an asymmetric nuclear matter environment. Also, higher order corrections of the pi N amplitude are included. The model can accommodate the repulsion required by phenomenological fits, though…
Elastic scattering of pions from finite nuclei is investigated utilizing a contemporary, momentum--space first--order optical potential combined with microscopic estimates of second--order corrections. The calculation of the first--order potential includes:\ \ (1)~full Fermi--averaging integration including both the delta propagation and the intrinsic nonlocalities in the $π$-$N$ amplitude, (2)~fully covariant kinematics, (3)~use of invariant amplitudes which do not contain kinematic singularities, and (4)~a finite--range off--shell pion--nucleon model which contains the nucleon pole term. The…
The production of backward pions in lepton-nucleus collisions is analyzed. We show that a large yield of high momentum backward pions can be explained by the Regge asymptotic of the distribution of nucleons carrying a large momentum fraction in the nuclear target. The calculated spectra of pions emitted in the neutrino + Ne --> muon + pion + X reaction are in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.
A careful reanalysis is done of the contribution to $K^{+}$ nucleus scattering from the interaction of the kaon with the virtual pion cloud. The usual approximations made in the evaluation of the related kaon selfenergy are shown to fail badly. We also find new interaction mechanisms which provide appreciable corrections to the kaon selfenergy. Some of these contribute to the imaginary part below pion creation threshold. The inclusion of these new mechanisms in the inelastic part of the optical potential produces a significant improvement in the differential and total $K^{+}$ nuclear cross sec…
Recently developed chiral effective field theory models provide excellent descriptions of the bulk characteristics of finite nuclei, but have not been tested with other observables. In this work, densities from both relativistic point-coupling models and mean-field meson models are used in the analysis of meson-nucleus scattering at medium energies. Elastic scattering observables for 790 MeV/$c$ $π^{\pm}$ on $^{208}$Pb are calculated in a relativistic impulse approximation, using the Kemmer-Duffin-Petiau formalism to calculate the $π^{\pm}$ nucleus optical potential.
We calculate cross sections for coherent pion production in nuclei induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos of the electron and muon type. The analogies and differences between this process and the related ones of coherent pion production induced by photons, or the (p,n) and $(^3 He, t)$ reactions are discussed. The process is one of the several ones occurring for intermediate energy neutrinos, to be considered when detecting atmospheric neutrinos. For this purpose the results shown here can be easily extrapolated to other energies and other nuclei.
We investigate theoretical approaches to pion--nucleus elastic scattering at high energies (300 $\le T_π\le$ 1 GeV). A ``model--exact'' calculation of the lowest--order microscopic optical model, carried out in momentum space and including the full Fermi averaging integration, a realistic off--shell pion--nucleon scattering amplitude and fully covariant kinematics, is used to calibrate a much simpler theory. The simpler theory utilizes a local optical potential with an eikonal propagator and includes the Coulomb interaction and the first Wallace correction, both of which are found to be import…
In this article, we study the coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus interaction in the resonance region using the formalism based on partially conserved axial current (PCAC) theorem which relates the neutrino-nucleus cross section to the pion-nucleus elastic cross section. The pion nucleus elastic cross section is calculated using the Glauber model in terms of pion-nucleon cross sections obtained by parameterizing the experimental data. We calculate the differential and integrated cross sections for charged current coherent pion production in neutrino carbon scattering. The results of i…
We present in this article an optical potential for the $π$-nucleus interaction that can be used in various studies involving $π$-nucleus channels. Based on earlier treatments of the low energy $π$-nucleus optical potential, we have derived a potential expression applicable from threshold up to the $Δ$-resonance region. We extracted the impulse approximation form for this potential from the $π-N$ scattering amplitude and then added to it kinematical and physical corrections. The kinematic corrections arise from transforming the impulse approximation expression from the $π-N$ center of mass fra…
In this article, we present the charged and neutral current coherent pion production in the neutrino-nucleus interaction in the resonance region using the formalism based on the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) theorem which relates the neutrino-nucleus cross section to the pion-nucleus elastic cross section. The pion nucleus elastic cross section is calculated using the Glauber model approach. We calculate the integrated cross sections for neutrino-carbon, neutrino-iron and neutrino-oxygen scattering. The results of integrated cross-section calculations are compared with the measured …
We propose to use the ratio of the pion-proton correlation functions evaluated under different conditions to study the relative space-time asymmetries in pion and proton emission (pion and nucleon source relative shifts) in high energy heavy ion collision. We address the question of the non-central collisions, where the sources can be shifted spatially both in the longitudinal and in the transverse directions in the reaction plane. We use the RQMD event generator to illustrate the effect and the technique.
A model for the pion photoproduction on nuclei in the $A\left({γ,\, πNN} \right)B$ reaction is presented. This is an extension of our recent model for the $A\left({γ,\, πN} \right)B$ reaction. In this approach we have moved beyond the standard shell-model considering $Δ$\textit{N} correlations in the nuclear wave functions, which are caused by the virtual transitions $NN \to ΔN \to NN$ in the ground state of the nucleus. The main ingredients of the model are the two- and three-particle density matrices and the transition operators $γΔ\to Nπ$ and $γN \to Nπ$. The direct and exchange reaction me…
Perturbative QCD results on pion production are presented in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from CERN SPS up to RHIC energy. A K_{jet}(s, p_T, Q) factor obtained from jet production is applied to perform next-to-leading order calculations. Using the intrinsic transverse momentum (k_T) we determined transverse momentum spectra for pions in wide energy region. We have investigated nuclear multiscattering and the Cronin effect at RHIC energies.
The pion-polarizability functions are structure functions of pion-Compton scattering. They can be assessed in high-energy pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung reactions, $π^- +A\toπ^- +γ+A$. We present numerical expectations for pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung cross sections in the Coulomb region, i.e. the small-angle region where the nuclear scattering is dominated by the Coulomb interaction. We investigate the prospects of measuring the polarizability functions for pion-Compton c.m. energies from threshold up to 1 GeV. A meson-exchange model is used for the pion-Compton amplitude.
The cross section for exclusive $π^+π^-$ and $π^0π^0$ meson pairs production in peripheral ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is calculated at the energy available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, i.e., $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.5$ TeV. The cross section for elementary $γγ\toππ$ process is calculated with the help of the pQCD Brodsky-Lepage approach with the distribution amplitude used recently to describe the pion transition form factor measured by the BaBar Collaboration.
The $ω$- and $ρ$-resonance production and their dileptonic decay in $π^- A$ reactions at GSI energies are calculated within the intranuclear cascade (INC) approach. The invariant mass distribution of the dilepton pair for each resonance is found to have two components which correspond to the decay of the resonances outside and inside the target nucleus. The latter components are strongly distorted by the nuclear medium due to resonance-nucleon scattering and a possible mass shift at finite baryon density. These medium modifications are compared to background sources in the dilepton spectrum fr…
We have shown that a local-density-dependent term, $F[ρ(r)] ρ(r)$, of the pion-nucleus potential with a nuclear density, $ρ(r)$, can be transposed to a conventional density-linear term, $F(ρ_e) ρ(r)$, with an effective nuclear density, $ρ_e$, which is close to $\sim 0.6 ρ(0)$ for most $π^-$ bound states. The presently found relations, {\it generalized Seki-Masutani relations}, for the density-quadratic term, the medium-modified isovector term and the double-scattering isoscalar term of the s-wave pion-nucleus interaction assure that the constant parameters in the conventional pion-nucleus pote…
We calculate the leading isospin conserving few-nucleon contributions to pion scattering on $^2$H, $^3$He, and $^4$He. We demonstrate that the strong contributions to the pion-nucleus scattering lengths can be controlled theoretically to an accuracy of a few percent for isoscalar nuclei and of 10% for isovector nuclei. In particular, we find the $π$-$^3$He scattering length to be $(62 \pm 4\pm 7)\times 10^{-3} m_π^{-1}$ where the uncertainties are due to ambiguities in the $π$-N scattering lengths and few-nucleon effects, respectively. To establish this accuracy we need to identify a suitable …
We analyze the production of $ρ$-mesons in $p + A$ reactions including both the production by proton-nucleon as well as pion-nucleon collisions within a coupled channel transport approach. The final state interactions of the $ρ$-meson with nucleons are evaluated from a resonance model which allows to extract elastic and inelastic cross sections. We include the latter final state interactions, the $ρ$-meson decay into two pions as well as the final pion-nucleon interactions within the transport approach. We find the invariant mass distribution of pion pairs to be sensitive to the $ρ$-meson prop…
The cross sections for producing K$^-$ mesons in nucleon-hyperon elementary processes are estimated assuming one-pion exchange and using the experimentally known pion-hyperon cross sections. The results are implemented in a transport model which is applied to calculation of proton-nucleus collisions. In significant difference to earlier estimates for heavy-ion collisions the inclusion of the nucleon-hyperon cross section roughly doubles the K$^-$ production in near-threshold proton-nucleus collisions.
In the energy range of present and future accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments, single-pion production (SPP) is one of the main contributions to the neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section. For these neutrino energies, ranging from several hundreds of MeV to a few GeV, the SPP on the nucleus is usually described by the reaction in which the incoming lepton couples to one bound nucleon in the nucleus, producing a pion and the knock-out nucleon, along with the residual system and the scattered lepton in the final state. Here, the kinematics and cross section formula for this proc…
The pion multiplicity per participating nucleon in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at the energies 2-15 A GeV is significantly smaller than in nucleon-nucleon interactions at the same collision energy. This effect of pion suppression is argued to appear due to the evolution of the system produced at the early stage of heavy-ion collisions towards a local thermodynamic equilibrium and further isentropic expansion.
We compare our pion production results with recent MiniBooNE data measured in mineral oil. Our total cross sections lie below experimental data for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. Differential cross sections show our model produces too few high energy pions in the forward direction as compared to data. The agreement with experiment improves by artificially removing pion final state interaction.
We reanalyse the production of $p\bar{p}$ pairs in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions employing novel elementary cross sections for baryon-baryon and pion-baryon production channels based on a boson-exchange model. In contrast to previous transport studies performed in the literature the secondary pion induced channel is found to be most important in both p+A and A+A collisions at subthreshold energies. A detailed comparison with the experimental data available indicates that sizeable attractive $\bar{p}$ potentials in the order of - 100 to - 150 MeV at normal nuclear matter density…
The remarkable observations in the pion induced and charge exchange reactions on a nucleus are the significant shift and broadening of the $Δ(1232)$-peak relative to free pion nucleon scattering. For the forward going massless leptons, the weak process $(ν_l,l)$ on a nucleon, according to Adler's partially conserved axial current theorem, is connected to the pion nucleon scattering. This mechanism is also applicable to the nucleus. Therefore, the modification of the $Δ$-peak in a nucleus can be seen in the $(ν_l,l)$ reaction since it is connected to the pion nucleus scattering. To investigate …
The microscopic eikonal phase shifts with its first and second corrections for pi nucleus collision are calculated by using the expression previously derived for the local Kisslinger potential. A physical description to different forms of targets density distributions, are implemented. The roles of the Ericson Ericson Lorentz Lorentz EELL parameter and the adjustable scattering amplitude parameters are discussed. The calculated differential cross sections include the second order corrections of eikonal phase shift. The need for modifying the effective interaction to account for higher order corr…
We present a study of coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus interactions using the formalism based on partially conserved axial current theorem which connects the neutrino-nucleus cross section to the pion-nucleus elastic scattering cross section. Pion-nucleus elastic scattering cross section is calculated using Glauber model which takes three inputs, nuclear densities, pion-nucleon cross section and $α_{πN}$ which is the ratio of real to imaginary part of $πN$ forward scattering amplitude, for which the parametrizations are obtained from measured data. We calculate the differential and…
Within a dynamical transport approach we investigate charged current interactions in neutrino-nucleus reactions for neutrino energies of 0.3 - 1.5 GeV with particular emphasis on resonant pion production channels via the $Δ_{33}(1232)$ resonance. The final-state-interactions of the resonance as well as of the emitted pions are calculated explicitly for $^{12}C$ and $^{56}Fe$ nuclei and show a dominance of pion suppression at moderate momenta $p_π>$ 0.2 GeV/c. A comparison to integrated $π^+$ spectra for $ν_μ+ ^{12}C$ reactions with the available (preliminary) data demonstrates a reasonable agr…
We discuss various aspects of pion physics in the nuclear medium. We first study s-wave pion-nucleus interaction in connection with chiral symmetry restoration and quark condensate in the nuclear medium. We then adress the question of p-wave pion-nucleus interaction and collective pionic modes in nuclei and draw the consequences for in medium $ππ$ correlations especially in the scalar-isoscalar channel. We finally discuss the modification of the rho meson mass spectrum at finite density and/or temperature in connection with relativistic heavy ion collisions.
The $ω$-, $ρ$- and $ϕ$-resonance production and their dileptonic decay in $π^- A$ reactions at 1.1 - 1.7 GeV/c are calculated within the intranuclear cascade (INC) approach. The invariant mass distribution of the dilepton pair for each resonance can be decomposed in two components which correspond to their decay 'inside' the target nucleus and in the vacuum, respectively. The first components are strongly distorted by the nuclear medium due to resonance-nucleon scattering and a possible mass shift at finite baryon density. These medium modifications are compared to background sources in the di…
We examine possibilities of pion condensation with zero momentum (s-wave condensation) in neutron stars by using the pion-nucleus optical potential U and the relativistic mean field (RMF) models. We use low-density phenomenological optical potentials parameterized to fit deeply bound pionic atoms or pion-nucleus elastic scatterings. Proton fraction (Y_p) and electron chemical potential (mu_e) in neutron star matter are evaluated in RMF models. We find that the s-wave pion condensation hardly takes place in neutron stars and especially has no chance if hyperons appear in neutron star matter and…
Event-by-event fluctuations of the kaon to pion number ratio in nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the statistical hadron-resonance gas model (SM) for different statistical ensembles and in the Hadron-String-Dynamics (HSD) transport approach. We find that the HSD model can qualitatively reproduce the measured excitation function for the $K/π$ ratio fluctuations in central Au+Au (or Pb+Pb) collisions from low SPS up to top RHIC energies. Substantial differences in the HSD and SM results are found for the fluctuations and correlations of the kaon and pion numbers. These predictions im…
Total inclusive cross sections for neutral and charged pion production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus reactions have been calculated and compared to experiment. Nucleon-nucleon theoretical cross sections have been scaled up to nuclear collisions using a scaling factor similar to $(A_PA_T)^{2/3}$, where $A_P$ and $A_T$ are the nucleon numbers of the projectile and target nuclei. Variations in the power of this scaling factor have been studied and a good fit to experiment is obtained with a small modification of the power. Theoretical cross sections are written in a form that is very suit…
We summarize new pQCD results on pion production in proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA) and nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions. Our calculation introduces intrinsic parton transverse momentum (k_T) and is performed effectively at next-to-leading order (NLO), applying a K factor extracted for jet events. Two different factorization scales, Q=p_{T,jet}/2 and p_{T,jet} are used. Experimental data in pA collisions imply a preference for the latter choice at NLO level. We display our results at CERN SPS for AA collisions.
Elastic cross sections are calculated and compared with the data on $π^{\pm}$ scattering on $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni, $^{208}$Pb nuclei in the energy range from 130 to 290 MeV. To this end, both the folding optical potential (OP) and the local modified Kisslinger-type OP were calculated, and then the $πA$ cross sections were obtained by solving the Klein-Gordon equation to account for the relativization and distortion wave effects. In the folding OPs, the parameters of the elementary $πN$ amplitude were fitted when describing the $πA$ scattering data, and thus the essential in-medium ef…
We study coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the energy region relevant to neutrino oscillation experiments of current interest. Our approach is based on a combined use of the Sato-Lee model of electroweak pion production on a nucleon and the Delta-hole model of pion-nucleus reactions. Thus we develop a model which describes pion-nucleus scattering and electroweak coherent pion production in a unified manner. Numerical calculations are carried out for the case of the 12C target. All the free parameters in our model are fixed by fitting to both total and elastic different…
The BUU transport model is applied to study strangeness and pion production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Starting from proton induced reactions, we further investigate Si+Au, Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions in the energy range between 2 and 40 A$\cdot$GeV and compare with data and with other transport calculations. The $q \bar q$ annihilation, or resonance, channel simulated by the string model in meson-nucleon collisions at $\sqrt{s} > 2$ GeV is introduced. The importance of this channel for a good description of the proton-nucleus data on $K^+$ production is demonstrated. We, furthermore, show …
We explore the photoproduction mechanisms for charged and neutral pion pairs off a heavy nucleus at threshold. We calculate the production of charged pairs in the Coulomb field of the nucleus in the Born approximation using explicit expressions for the differential cross sections and their connection with the total cross-section. The production of sigma mesons at threshold and their subsequent decay into pions is an important mechanism and is investigated quantitatively in a framework that can be used for both charged and neutral pions. Sigma mesons can be produced via electromagnetic (photon …
Exclusive A(p,K^+){_Λ}B and A(π,K^+){_Λ}B^\prime reactions leading to two body final states, have been investigated in a fully covariant model based on an effective Lagrangian picture. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of N*(1650), N*(1710) and N*(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states, in the initial collision of the projectile with one of the target nucleons. The bound state wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. The calculated cross sections show s…
We have investigated the neutrino induced coherent pion production reaction at low and intermediate energies including pion, nucleon and Delta(1232) resonance. Medium effects in the production mechanism and the distortion of the pion wave function are included in the calculation. We find a strong reduction of the cross section due to these effects and also substantial modifications in the energy distributions of the final pion. The dependence on the atomic number is discussed.
Pion production in proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions outside the kinematical boundary of proton-nucleon (p+N) reactions, the so-called cumulative effect, is studied. Restrictions from energy-momentum conservation on the energy of pions emitted in the backward direction in the target rest frame are analyzed. It is assumed that the cumulative pions are produced in p+A reactions by heavy baryonic resonances. The baryonic resonances are first created in p+N reactions. Due to successive collisions with nuclear nucleons the masses of these resonances may then increase and, simultaneously, their longit…
We study one pion production in both charged and neutral current neutrino nucleus scattering for neutrino energies below 2 GeV. We use a theoretical model for one pion production at the nucleon level that we correct for medium effects. The results are incorporated into a cascade program that apart from production also includes the pion final state interaction inside the nucleus. Besides, in some specific channels coherent pion production is also possible and we evaluate its contribution as well. Our results for total and differential cross sections are compared with recent data from the MiniBo…
In this paper, it is shown that the experimental values of the nonextensive scattering entropies $S_L (p)$ and $S_θ(q)$ for the pion-nucleus ($π^0 He, π^0 C, π^0 O, π^0 Ca$) scatterings, in the energy region corresponding to $Δ(1236)$ resonance in the elementary pion-nucleon interaction, are well described by the entropic optimal resonance predictions $S_L^o1 (p)$ and $S_θ^o1 (q)$ and when the nonextensivities indices are correlated by a Riesz-Thorin-like relation: 1/2p+1/2q=1.
We study coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus scattering in the energy region relevant to the recent neutrino oscillation experiments. Our approach is based on the combined use of the Sato-Lee model and the Delta-hole model. Our initial numerical results are compared with the recent data from K2K and SciBooNE.
Jet quenching of quarks and gluons in central A+A collisions suppresses the high-p_T meson production and exposes novel baryon dynamics that we attribute to (gluonic) baryon junctions. This mechanism predicts baryon enhancement in a finite moderate-p_T window that decreases with increasing impact parameter. We also extend recent calculations of the transverse momentum behavior of p/pi^+ and p-bar/pi^- to other baryon species and show that a similar pattern is expected for the K^-/Lambda and K^+/bar{Lambda} ratios. Within the framework of the model constant p-bar/p and bar{Lambda}/Lambda ratios…
We use our model for neutrino pion production on the nucleon to study pion production on a nucleus. The model is conveniently modified to include in-medium corrections and its validity is extended up to 2 GeV neutrino energies by the inclusion of new resonant contributions in the production process. Our results are compared with recent MiniBooNE data measured in mineral oil. Our total cross sections are below data for neutrino energies above 1 GeV. As with other theoretical calculations, the agreement with data improves if we neglect pion final state interaction. This is also the case for diff…
Entropy production in the initial compression stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions from AGS to SPS energies is calculated within a three-fluid hydrodynamical model. The entropy per participating net baryon is found to increase smoothly and does not exhibit a jump or a plateau as in the 1-dimensional one-fluid shock model. Therefore, the excess of pions per participating net baryon in nucleus-nucleus collisions as compared to proton-proton reactions also increases smoothly with beam energy.
A hypothesis is proposed herein, suggesting that a pion-nuclear resonance may be observed in the $α+d\to{}^6\mathrm{Li}(3.563)+π^0$ reaction. The resonance has a $πNNα$ structure, containing $αNN$ and $πNN$ subsystems. The former corresponds to the $A=6$ isotriplet ($^6\mathrm{He}_\text{g.s.}$, $^6\mathrm{Li}(3.563)$, $^6\mathrm{Be}_\text{g.s.}$), whereas the latter is a hypothetical $NN$-decoupled dibaryon. We propose an experiment to search for this resonance using the $^7\mathrm{Li}(p,d)$ reaction.
