Pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung offers a possibility of measuring the structure functions of pion-Compton scattering from a study of the small-momentum-transfer region where the bremsstrahlung reaction is dominated by the single-photon-exchange mechanism. The corresponding cross-section distribution is characterized by a sharp peak at small momentum transfers. But there is also a hadronic contribution which is smooth and constitutes an undesired background. In this communication the modification of the single-photon exchange amplitude by multiple-Coulomb scattering is investigated as well as the Coulomb-nuclear interference term.
The bremsstrahlung produced when heavy nuclei collide is estimated for central collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Soft photons can be used to infer the rapidity distribution of the outgoing charge. An experimental design is outlined.
At low photon energies, the potential models of nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung are based on electric transition multipole operators, which are derived either only from the nuclear current or only from the charge density by making the long-wavelength approximation and using the Siegert theorem. In the latter case, the bremsstrahlung matrix elements are divergent and some regularization techniques are used to obtain finite values for the bremsstrahlung cross sections. From an extension of the Siegert theorem, which is not based on the long-wavelength approximation, a new potential model of nucle…
The pion-polarizability functions are structure functions of pion-Compton scattering. They can be assessed in high-energy pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung reactions, $π^- +A\toπ^- +γ+A$. We present numerical expectations for pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung cross sections in the Coulomb region, i.e. the small-angle region where the nuclear scattering is dominated by the Coulomb interaction. We investigate the prospects of measuring the polarizability functions for pion-Compton c.m. energies from threshold up to 1 GeV. A meson-exchange model is used for the pion-Compton amplitude.
Hard high-energy pion-nucleus bremsstrahlung, $π^- +A\toπ^- +γ+A$, is studied in the Coulomb region, i.e. the small-angle region where the nuclear scattering is dominated by the Coulomb interaction. Special attention is focussed on the possibility of measuring the pion polarizability in such reactions. We study the sensitivity to the structure of the underlying the pion-Compton amplitude through a model with $σ$, $ρ$, and a_1 exchanges. It is found that the effective energy in the virtual pion-Compton scattering is often so large that the threshold approximation does not apply.
We investigate an idea, how to use analysis of the bremsstrahlung photons to study the internal structure of proton under nuclear reaction with nucleus. A new model is constructed to describe bremsstrahlung emission of photons which accompanies the scattering of protons off nuclei. Our bremsstrahlung formalism uses many-nucleon basis that allows to analyze coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions. As scattered proton can be under the influence of strong forces and produces the largest bremsstrahlung contribution to full spectrum, we focus on accurate determination of its quantum evolut…
The proton-proton bremsstrahlung is investigated within a coupled-channel model with the $Δ$ degree of freedom. The model is consistent with the $NN$ scattering up to 1 GeV and the $γNΔ$ vertex determined in the study of pion photoproduction reactions. It is found that the $Δ$ excitation can significantly improve the agreements with the $pp \rightarrow ppγ$ at $E_{lab}=280$ MeV. Predictions at $E_{lab}=550$ and $800$ MeV are presented for future experimental tests.
The rates of axion emission by nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung are calculated with the inclusion of the full momentum contribution from a nuclear one pion exchange (OPE) potential. The contributions of the neutron-neutron (nn), proton-proton (pp) and neutron-proton (np) processes in both the nondegenerate and degenerate limits are explicitly given. We find that the finite momentum corrections to the emissivities are quantitatively significant for the non-degenerate regime and temperature-dependent, and should affect the existing axion mass bounds. The trend of these nuclear effects is to dimini…
The bremsstrahlung produced when heavy nuclei collide is estimated for central collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Bremsstrahlung photons with energies below 100 to 200 MeV are sufficient to discern the gross features of the space-time evolution of electric charge, if they can be separated from other sources of photons experimentally. This is illustrated explicitly by considering two very different models, one Bjorken-like, the other Landau-like, both of which are constructed to give the same final charge rapidity distribution.
A dynamical model based on effective Lagrangians is proposed to describe the bremsstrahlung reaction $ πN \to πN γ$ at low energies. The $Δ(1232)$ degrees of freedom are incorporated in a way consistent with both, electromagnetic gauge invariance and invariance under contact transformations. The model also includes the initial and final state rescattering of hadrons via a T-matrix with off-shell effects. The $πN γ$ differential cross sections are calculated using three different T-matrix models and the results are compared with the soft photon approximation, and with experimental data. The aim…
In this paper a role of many-nucleon dynamics in formation of the compound $^{5}{\rm Li}$ nucleus in the scattering of protons off $α$-particles at the proton incident energies up to 20 MeV is investigated. We propose a bremsstrahlung model allowing to extract information about probabilities of formation of such nucleus on the basis of analysis of experimental cross-sections of the bremsstrahlung photons. In order to realize this approach, the model includes elements of microscopic theory and also probabilities of formation of the short-lived compound nucleus. Results of calculations of the br…
Based on an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, a microscopic cluster model of the nucleus-nucleus bremsstrahlung, including implicitly a part of the effects of meson-exchange currents via an extension of the Siegert theorem is applied to the $α+p$ and $α+n$ systems. The contributions of the $E1$ and $E2$ transitions to the bremsstrahlung cross sections are evaluated and their relative importance for the mirror systems $α+p$ and $α+n$ is compared. Another approach based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions and the No-Core Shell Model/Resonating-Group Method is also investigated.…
The model also includes the initial and final state rescattering of hadrons via a T-matrix with off the momentum-shell effects. The double differential distribution of photons is computed for three different T-matrix models and the results are compared with the soft photon approximation, and with experimen…
Two-photon production in pp scattering is proposed as a means of studying virtual-pion emission. Such a process is complementary to real-pion emission in pp scattering. The virtual-pion signal is embedded in a background of double-photon bremsstrahlung. We have developed a model to describe this background process and show that in certain parts of phase space the virtual-pion signal gives significant contribution. In addition, through interference with the two-photon bremsstrahlung background, one can determine the relative phase of the virtual-pion process.
We have made a detailed and quantitative study of dilepton production via bremsstrahlung of a virtual photon during pion-pion collisions. Most calculations of electromagnetic radiation from strong interaction processes rely on the soft photon approximation (SPA). The conditions underlying this approximation are generally violated when dilepton spectra are calculated in terms of their invariant mass, so that an approach going beyond the SPA becomes necessary. Superseding previous derivations, we derive an exact formula for the bremsstrahlung cross section. The resulting formulation is compared …
A new approach is presented to determine the proton-nucleus interactions from the analysis of the accompanying photon bremsstrahlung. We study the scattering of $p + ^{208}{\rm Pb}$ at the proton incident energies of 140 and 145~MeV, and the scattering of $p + ^{12}{\rm C}$, $p + ^{58}{\rm Ni}$, $p + ^{107}{\rm Ag}$ and $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ at the proton incident energy of 190~MeV. The model determines contributions of the coherent emission (formed by an interaction between the scattering proton and nucleus as a whole without the internal many-nucleon structure), incoherent emission (formed by…
The experimental discovery that the nucleus is approximately transparent to low energy pions is reviewed. The consequences of this for nuclear deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan interactions are discussed. I argue that low energy nucleus data imply that there is little nuclear enhancement of the pion cloud of a nucleon, and try to interpret this in terms of nucleon-nucleon correlations.
Neutrino-pair production and annihilation through nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is included in current supernova simulations by rates that are based on the one-pion-exchange approximation. Here we explore the consequences of bremsstrahlung rates based on a modern nuclear interactions for proto-neutron star cooling and the corresponding neutrino emission. We find that despite a reduction of the bremsstrahlung emission by a factor of 2-5 in the neutrinospheric region, models with the improved treatment exhibit only $\lesssim$5% changes of the neutrino luminosities and an increase of $\lesssim$0…
We investigate emission of the bremsstrahlung photons in the scattering of protons off nuclei at the $Δ$-resonance energy region. Including properties of $Δ$-resonance in the nucleus-target to the bremsstrahlung model, we find the following. (1) Ratio between incoherent emission and coherent emission is about $10^{6}$--$10^{7}$ for $p + \isotope[197]{Au}$ (without $Δ$-resonance) at energy of proton beam $E_{\rm p}$ of 190~MeV, where the calculated full bremsstrahlung spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data. This confirms importance of incoherent processes in study of $Δ$-resonance…
We report on the study of extremely high energy photons, pions and etas, produced in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. Possibility of imaging the final-state phase space in these collisions by the Bose-Einstein correlations for photons is critically examined.
In the scattering of positive pions by nuclei the double-charge-exchange (DCX) reaction creates the possibility of formation of pionic atom states in the vicinity of the threshold of this reaction. These quasi stationary states can manifest themselves as resonances in the elastic scattering cross section. The strength and shape of these resonances is strongly affected by an instability of the nucleus created in the DCX channel. It is shown that this mechanism can explain oscillation structures in the excitation function observed in scattering of low-energy positive pions from $^{12}\text{C}$.

A self-consistent symmetry arises when the nucleon angular momentum j and the isospin t are coupled to a grand spin G. Closed G shells become sources of a classical pion field with a hedgehog shape. Although the amplitude of the pion field, as measured by the chiral angle, is small, it is found to perturb significantly the energies of the nucleon orbits.
The density of gluons produced in the central rapidity region of a heavy ion collision is poorly known. We investigate the influence of the effects of quantum coherence on the transverse momentum distribution of photons and gluons radiated by a quark propagating through nuclear matter. We describe the case that the radiation time substantially exceeds the nuclear radius (the relevant case for RHIC and LHC energies), which is different from what is known as Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect corresponding to an infinite medium. We find suppression of the radiation spectrum at small transverse pho…
We analyse pion-nucleus reactions in a microscopic transport model of the BUU type, which propagates nucleons, pions, deltas and N(1440)-resonances explicitly in space and time. In particular we examine pion absorption and inelastic scattering cross sections for pion kinetic energies T(pi) =85-315MeV and various target masses. In general, the mass-dependence of the experimental data is well described for energies up to the delta-resonance (\approx 160 MeV) while the absorption cross sections are somewhat overestimated for the higher energies. In addition we study the possible dynamical effects…
The nuclear sigma term is calculated including the nuclear matrix element of the derivative of the NN interaction with respect to the quark mass, $m_q\frac{\partial V_{NN}}{\partial m_q}$. The NN potential is evaluated in the skyrmion-skyrmion picture within the quantized product ansatz. The contribution of the NN potential to the nuclear sigma term provides repulsion to the pion-nucleus interaction. The strength of the s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential is estimated including such contribution. The results are consistent with the analysis of the experimental data.
Predictions of the existence of well-defined deeply bound pionic atom states for heavy nuclei and the eventual observation of such states by the (d,3He) reaction have revived interest in the pion-nucleus interaction at threshold and in its relation to the corresponding pion-nucleon interaction. Explanation of the 'anomalous' s-wave repulsion in terms of partial restoration of chiral symmetry and/or in terms of energy-dependence effects have been tested in global fits to pionic atom data and in a recent dedicated elastic scattering experiment. The role of neutron density distributions in this c…
The production of pions emitted backward in inelastic neutrino-nucleus interactions is analyzed within the impulse approximation in the framework of the dual parton model. We focus on the $Q^2$-dependence of the multiplicity of negative pions, normalized to the total cross section of the reaction $ν+ A \to μ+ X$. The inclusion of planar (one-Reggeon exchange) and cylindrical (one-Pomeron exchange) graphs leads to a multiplicity that decreases as $Q^2$ increases, in agreement with recent measurements carried out at CERN by the NOMAD collaboration. A realistic treatment of the high momentum tail…
We analyze if the nucleon structure of the $α$ decaying nucleus can be visible in the experimental bremsstrahlung spectra of the emitted photons which accompany such a decay. We develop a new formalism of the bremsstrahlung model taking into account distribution of nucleons in the $α$ decaying nuclear system. We conclude the following: (1) After inclusion of the nucleon structure into the model the calculated bremsstrahlung spectrum is changed very slowly for a majority of the $α$ decaying nuclei. However, we have observed that visible changes really exist for the $^{106}{\rm Te}$ nucleus ($Q_…
Dynamics of the nuclear fragmentations and the charge exchange reactions in pion-nucleus collisions near the $Δ$(1232) resonance energies has been investigated within the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics (LQMD) transport model. An isospin, momentum and density-dependent pion-nucleon potential is implemented in the model, which influences the pion dynamics, in particular the kinetic energy spectra, but weakly impacts the fragmentation mechanism. The absorption process in pion-nucleon collisions to form the $Δ$(1232) resonance dominates the heating mechanism of target nucleus. The excitation e…
Experimental data on the pion-nucleus total cross sections are analyzed in terms of the optimal resonances predictions (OR). The OR-predictions are found in a good agreement with the actual experimental data in the region corresponding to the Delta(1236) resonance in elementary pi-N scattering. The essential signatures of the optimal resonances are experimentally verified with high accuracy.
We calculate the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus optical potential using a unitarized chiral approach that has been previously used to simultaneously describe pionic hydrogen and deuterium data as well as low energy pi N scattering in the vacuum. This energy dependent model allows for additional isoscalar parts in the potential from multiple rescattering. We consider Pauli blocking and pion polarization in an asymmetric nuclear matter environment. Also, higher order corrections of the pi N amplitude are included. The model can accommodate the repulsion required by phenomenological fits, though…
Elastic scattering of pions from finite nuclei is investigated utilizing a contemporary, momentum--space first--order optical potential combined with microscopic estimates of second--order corrections. The calculation of the first--order potential includes:\ \ (1)~full Fermi--averaging integration including both the delta propagation and the intrinsic nonlocalities in the $π$-$N$ amplitude, (2)~fully covariant kinematics, (3)~use of invariant amplitudes which do not contain kinematic singularities, and (4)~a finite--range off--shell pion--nucleon model which contains the nucleon pole term. The…
The production of backward pions in lepton-nucleus collisions is analyzed. We show that a large yield of high momentum backward pions can be explained by the Regge asymptotic of the distribution of nucleons carrying a large momentum fraction in the nuclear target. The calculated spectra of pions emitted in the neutrino + Ne --> muon + pion + X reaction are in satisfactory agreement with the available experimental data.
Prompt gluons are an additional source for charmonium suppression in nuclear collisions, in particular for nucleus-nucleus collisions. These gluons are radiated as bremsstrahlung in N-N collisions and interact inelastically with the charmonium states while the nuclei still overlap. The spectra and mean number <n_g> of the prompt gluons are calculated perturbatively and the gluon-Psi inelastic cross section is estimated. The integrated cross sections for AB --> J/Psi (Psi')X for p-A and A-B collisions and the dependence on transverse energy for S-U and Pb-Pb can be described quantitatively with…
We examine the spectrum of bremsstrahlung photons that results from the stopping of the initial net charge distributions in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collier (LHC). This effect has escaped detection so far since it becomes sizable only at very low transverse momentum and at sufficiently forward rapidity. We argue that it may be within reach of the next-generation LHC heavy-ion detector ALICE-3 that is currently under study, and we comment on the physics motivation for measuring it.
A careful reanalysis is done of the contribution to $K^{+}$ nucleus scattering from the interaction of the kaon with the virtual pion cloud. The usual approximations made in the evaluation of the related kaon selfenergy are shown to fail badly. We also find new interaction mechanisms which provide appreciable corrections to the kaon selfenergy. Some of these contribute to the imaginary part below pion creation threshold. The inclusion of these new mechanisms in the inelastic part of the optical potential produces a significant improvement in the differential and total $K^{+}$ nuclear cross sec…
Recently developed chiral effective field theory models provide excellent descriptions of the bulk characteristics of finite nuclei, but have not been tested with other observables. In this work, densities from both relativistic point-coupling models and mean-field meson models are used in the analysis of meson-nucleus scattering at medium energies. Elastic scattering observables for 790 MeV/$c$ $π^{\pm}$ on $^{208}$Pb are calculated in a relativistic impulse approximation, using the Kemmer-Duffin-Petiau formalism to calculate the $π^{\pm}$ nucleus optical potential.
We investigate emission of bremsstrahlung photons during scattering of $α$-particles off nuclei. For that, we construct bremsstrahlung model for $α$-nucleus scattering, where a new formalism for coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions in elastic scattering and mechanisms in inelastic scattering is added. Basing of this approach, we analyze experimental bremsstrahlung cross-sections in the scattering of $α$-particles off the \isotope[59]{Co}, \isotope[116]{Sn}, \isotope[\rm nat]{Ag} and \isotope[197]{Au} nuclei at 50 MeV of $α$-particles beam measured at the Variable Energy Cyclotron C…
We calculate cross sections for coherent pion production in nuclei induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos of the electron and muon type. The analogies and differences between this process and the related ones of coherent pion production induced by photons, or the (p,n) and $(^3 He, t)$ reactions are discussed. The process is one of the several ones occurring for intermediate energy neutrinos, to be considered when detecting atmospheric neutrinos. For this purpose the results shown here can be easily extrapolated to other energies and other nuclei.
We investigate theoretical approaches to pion--nucleus elastic scattering at high energies (300 $\le T_π\le$ 1 GeV). A ``model--exact'' calculation of the lowest--order microscopic optical model, carried out in momentum space and including the full Fermi averaging integration, a realistic off--shell pion--nucleon scattering amplitude and fully covariant kinematics, is used to calibrate a much simpler theory. The simpler theory utilizes a local optical potential with an eikonal propagator and includes the Coulomb interaction and the first Wallace correction, both of which are found to be import…
Bremsstrahlung of photons emitted during the scattering of $π^{+}$-mesons off nuclei is studied for the first time. Role of interactions between $π^{+}$-mesons and nuclei in the formation of the bremsstrahlung emission is analyzed in details. We discover essential contribution of emitted photons from nuclear part of Johnson-Satchler potential to the full spectrum, in contrast to the optical Woods-Saxon potential. We observe unusual essential influence of the nuclear part of both potentials on the spectrum at high photon energies. This phenomenon opens a new experimental way to study and check …
In this article the neutrino-pair production from nucleon-nucleon (NN) bremsstrahlung is explored via medium-modifications of the strong interactions at the level of the one-pion exchange approximation. It governs the bulk part of the NN interaction at low densities relevant for the neutrino physics in core-collapse supernova studies. The resulting medium modified one-pion exchange rate for the neutrino-pair processes is implemented in simulations of core collapse supernovae in order to study the impact on the neutrino signal emitted from the deleptonization of the nascent proto-neutron star. …
Model of angular bremsstrahlung of photons emitted during $α$-decay is presented. A special emphasis is given on development of unified formalism of matrix elements in the dipole and multipolar approaches. A probability of the emission of photons calculated on the basis of the multipole model without any normalization on experimental data (i. e. in absolute scale) is found at $90^{\circ}$ of the angle $\vartheta_{αγ}$ between directions of motion of the $α$-particle (with its tunneling under barrier) and emission of photons to be in a good agreement with the newest experimental data for the $^…
We present in this article an optical potential for the $π$-nucleus interaction that can be used in various studies involving $π$-nucleus channels. Based on earlier treatments of the low energy $π$-nucleus optical potential, we have derived a potential expression applicable from threshold up to the $Δ$-resonance region. We extracted the impulse approximation form for this potential from the $π-N$ scattering amplitude and then added to it kinematical and physical corrections. The kinematic corrections arise from transforming the impulse approximation expression from the $π-N$ center of mass fra…
We calculate in this work the rates for the neutrino pair production by nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung taking into account the full contribution from a nuclear one-pion-exchange potential. It is shown that if the temperatures are low enough ($T \leq 20 MeV$), the integration over the nuclear part can be done for the general case, ranging from the completely degenerate (D) to the non-degenerate (ND) regime. We find that the inclusion of the full nuclear contribution enhances the neutrino pair production by $nn$ and $pp$ bremsstrahlung by a factor of about two in both the D and ND limits when co…
Analysis is performed of calculations of the elastic scattering differential cross sections of pions on the $^{28}$Si, $^{40}$Ca, $^{58}$Ni and $^{208}$Pb nuclei at energies from 130 to 290 MeV basing on the microscopic optical potential (OP) constructed as an optical limit of a Glauber theory. Such an OP is defined by the corresponding target nucleus density distribution function and by the elementary $πN$ amplitude of scattering. The three (say, "in-medium") parameters of the $πN$ scattering amplitude: total cross section, the ratio of real to imaginary part of the forward $πN$ amplitude, an…
A model for the pion photoproduction on nuclei in the $A\left({γ,\, πNN} \right)B$ reaction is presented. This is an extension of our recent model for the $A\left({γ,\, πN} \right)B$ reaction. In this approach we have moved beyond the standard shell-model considering $Δ$\textit{N} correlations in the nuclear wave functions, which are caused by the virtual transitions $NN \to ΔN \to NN$ in the ground state of the nucleus. The main ingredients of the model are the two- and three-particle density matrices and the transition operators $γΔ\to Nπ$ and $γN \to Nπ$. The direct and exchange reaction me…
Perturbative QCD results on pion production are presented in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions from CERN SPS up to RHIC energy. A K_{jet}(s, p_T, Q) factor obtained from jet production is applied to perform next-to-leading order calculations. Using the intrinsic transverse momentum (k_T) we determined transverse momentum spectra for pions in wide energy region. We have investigated nuclear multiscattering and the Cronin effect at RHIC energies.
In this article, we study the coherent pion production in neutrino-nucleus interaction in the resonance region using the formalism based on partially conserved axial current (PCAC) theorem which relates the neutrino-nucleus cross section to the pion-nucleus elastic cross section. The pion nucleus elastic cross section is calculated using the Glauber model in terms of pion-nucleon cross sections obtained by parameterizing the experimental data. We calculate the differential and integrated cross sections for charged current coherent pion production in neutrino carbon scattering. The results of i…
In this article, we present the charged and neutral current coherent pion production in the neutrino-nucleus interaction in the resonance region using the formalism based on the partially conserved axial current (PCAC) theorem which relates the neutrino-nucleus cross section to the pion-nucleus elastic cross section. The pion nucleus elastic cross section is calculated using the Glauber model approach. We calculate the integrated cross sections for neutrino-carbon, neutrino-iron and neutrino-oxygen scattering. The results of integrated cross-section calculations are compared with the measured …
We study the impact of the nucleon-$α$ P-wave resonances on neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung. Because of the non-central spin-orbit interaction, these resonances lead to an enhanced contribution to the nucleon spin structure factor for temperatures $T \lesssim 4$ MeV. If the $α$-particle fraction is significant and the temperature is in this range, this contribution is competitive with neutron-neutron bremsstrahlung. This may be relevant for neutrino production in core-collapse supernovae or other dense astrophysical environments. Similar enhancements are expected for resonant non-central nucleon-…
The $ω$- and $ρ$-resonance production and their dileptonic decay in $π^- A$ reactions at GSI energies are calculated within the intranuclear cascade (INC) approach. The invariant mass distribution of the dilepton pair for each resonance is found to have two components which correspond to the decay of the resonances outside and inside the target nucleus. The latter components are strongly distorted by the nuclear medium due to resonance-nucleon scattering and a possible mass shift at finite baryon density. These medium modifications are compared to background sources in the dilepton spectrum fr…
We propose to use the ratio of the pion-proton correlation functions evaluated under different conditions to study the relative space-time asymmetries in pion and proton emission (pion and nucleon source relative shifts) in high energy heavy ion collision. We address the question of the non-central collisions, where the sources can be shifted spatially both in the longitudinal and in the transverse directions in the reaction plane. We use the RQMD event generator to illustrate the effect and the technique.
We calculate the leading isospin conserving few-nucleon contributions to pion scattering on $^2$H, $^3$He, and $^4$He. We demonstrate that the strong contributions to the pion-nucleus scattering lengths can be controlled theoretically to an accuracy of a few percent for isoscalar nuclei and of 10% for isovector nuclei. In particular, we find the $π$-$^3$He scattering length to be $(62 \pm 4\pm 7)\times 10^{-3} m_π^{-1}$ where the uncertainties are due to ambiguities in the $π$-N scattering lengths and few-nucleon effects, respectively. To establish this accuracy we need to identify a suitable …
We analyze the production of $ρ$-mesons in $p + A$ reactions including both the production by proton-nucleon as well as pion-nucleon collisions within a coupled channel transport approach. The final state interactions of the $ρ$-meson with nucleons are evaluated from a resonance model which allows to extract elastic and inelastic cross sections. We include the latter final state interactions, the $ρ$-meson decay into two pions as well as the final pion-nucleon interactions within the transport approach. We find the invariant mass distribution of pion pairs to be sensitive to the $ρ$-meson prop…
