We analyze the dynamics of a chain of singly-charged ions confined in a linear Paul trap and which couple with the mode of a high-finesse optical resonator. In these settings the ions interact via the Coulomb repulsion and are subject to the mechanical forces due to scattering of cavity photons. We show that the interplay of these interactions can give rise to bistable equilibrium configurations, into which the chain can be cooled by cavity-enhanced photon scattering. We characterize the resulting equilibrium structures by determining the stationary state in the semiclassical limit for both cavity field and crystal motion. The mean occupation of the vibrational modes at steady state is evaluated, showing that the vibrational modes coupled to the cavity can be simultaneously cooled to low occupation numbers. It is also found that at steady state the vibrations are entangled with the cavity field fluctuations. The entanglement is quantified by means of the logarithmic negativity. The spectrum of the light at the cavity output is evaluated and the features signaling entanglement are here identified.
Fiber Fabry-Perot cavities, formed by micro-machined mirrors on the end-facets of optical fibers, are used in an increasing number of technical and scientific applications, where they typically require precise stabilization of their optical resonances. Here, we study two different approaches to construct fiber Fabry-Perot resonators and stabilize their length for experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics with neutral atoms. A piezo-mechanically actuated cavity with feedback based on the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique is compared to a novel rigid cavity design that makes use of the hig…
We propose and analyze a multi-functional setup consisting of high finesse optical cavities, beam splitters, and phase shifters. The basic scheme projects arbitrary photonic two-mode input states onto the subspace spanned by the product of Fock states |n>|n> with n=0,1,2,.... This protocol does not only provide the possibility to conditionally generate highly entangled photon number states as resource for quantum information protocols but also allows one to test and hence purify this type of quantum states in a communication scenario, which is of great practical importance. The scheme is espec…
We propose two novel schemes to generate the two-dimensional 2xN and 3xN cluster states by using a chain of (two-level) Rydberg atoms in the framework of cavity QED. These schemes work in a completely deterministic way and are based on the resonant interaction of the atoms in a chain with a bimodal cavity that supports two independent modes of the photon field. We demonstrate that a 2xN cluster state can be generated efficiently with only a single bimodal cavity, while two such cavities are needed in order to construct a 3xN cluster state. It is shown, moreover, how these schemes can be extend…
We demonstrate the fabrication of ultra-low-loss, all-fiber Fabry-Pérot cavities containing a nanofiber section, optimized for cavity quantum electrodynamics. By continuously monitoring the finesse and fiber radius during fabrication of a nanofiber between two fiber Bragg gratings, we are able to precisely evaluate taper transmission as a function of radius. The resulting cavities have an internal round-trip loss of only 0.31% at a nanofiber waist radius of 207 nm, with a total finesse of 1380, and a maximum expected internal cooperativity of $\sim$ 1050 for a cesium atom on the nanofiber surf…
We demonstrate fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavities with concave mirrors that can be operated at cavity lengths as large as 1.5mm without significant deterioration of the finesse. This is achieved by using a laser dot machining technique to shape spherical mirrors with ultralow roughness and employing single-mode fibers with large mode area for good mode matching to the cavity. Additionally, in contrast to previous FFPs, these cavities can be used over an octave-spanning frequency range with adequate coatings. We also show directly that shape deviations caused by the fiber's index profile lead to …
A novel approach to optics integration in ion traps is demonstrated based on a surface electrode ion trap that is microfabricated on top of a dielectric mirror. Additional optical losses due to fabrication are found to be as low as 80 ppm for light at 422 nm. The integrated mirror is used to demonstrate light collection from, and imaging of, a single 88 Sr+ ion trapped $169\pm4 μ$m above the mirror.
An extensive characterization of high finesse optical cavities used in cavity QED experiments is described. Different techniques in the measurement of the loss and phase shifts associated with the mirror coatings are discussed and their agreement shown. Issues of cavity field mode structure supported by the dielectric coatings are related to our effort to achieve the strongest possible coupling between an atom and the cavity.
Light scattering by a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab (PCS) can result in dramatic interference effects associated with Fano resonances. Such devices offer appealing alternatives to distributed Bragg reflectors or filters for various applications such as optical wavelength and polarization filters, reflectors, semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, bio-sensors, or non-linear optical components. Suspended PCSs also find natural applications in the field of optomechanics, where the mechanical modes of a suspended slab interact via radiation pressure with the optical field of a high finesse …
We propose a scheme to unconditionally entangle the internal states of atoms trapped in separate high finesse optical cavities. The scheme uses the technique of quantum reservoir engineering in a cascaded cavity QED setting, and for ideal (lossless) coupling between the cavities generates an entangled pure state. Highly entangled states are also shown to be possible for realizable cavity QED parameters and with nonideal coupling.
We present a novel method of machining optical fiber surfaces with a CO${}_2$ laser for use in Fiber-based Fabry-Perot Cavities (FFPCs). Previously FFPCs were prone to large birefringence and limited to relatively short cavity lengths ($\le$ 200 $μ$m). These characteristics hinder their use in some applications such as cavity quantum electrodynamics with trapped ions. We optimized the laser machining process to produce large, uniform surface structures. This enables the cavities to achieve high finesse even for long cavity lengths. By rotating the fibers around their axis during the laser mach…
We describe an ion-based cavity-QED system in which the internal dynamics of an atom is coupled to the modes of an optical cavity by vacuum-stimulated Raman transitions. We observe Raman spectra for different excitation polarizations and find quantitative agreement with theoretical simulations. Residual motion of the ion introduces motional sidebands in the Raman spectrum and leads to ion delocalization. The system offers prospects for cavity-assisted resolved-sideband ground-state cooling and coherent manipulation of ions and photons.
We present a numerical study of a MEMS-based design of a fiber cavity integrated with an ion trap system. Each fiber mirror is supported by a microactuator that controls the mirror's position in three dimensions. The mechanical stability is investigated by a feasibility analysis showing that the actuator offers a stable support of the fiber. The actuators move the fibers' positions continuously with a stroke of more than 10 $μ$m, with mechanical resonance frequencies on the order of kHz. A calculation of the trapping potential shows that a separation between ion and fiber consistent with stron…
We give a theoretical treatment of single atom detection in an compound, optical micro cavity. The cavity consists of a single mode semiconductor waveguide with a gap to allow atoms to interact with the optical field in the cavity. Optical losses, both in the semiconductor and induced by the gap are considered and we give an estimate of the cavity finesse. We also compute the cooperativity parameter and show how it depends on the gap width and cavity length. Maximization of the cooperativity does not always correspond to maximization of the coupling.
The quadrupole S$_{1/2}$ -- D$_{5/2}$ optical transition of a single trapped Ca$^+$ ion, well suited for encoding a quantum bit of information, is coherently coupled to the standing wave field of a high finesse cavity. The coupling is verified by observing the ion's response to both spatial and temporal variations of the intracavity field. We also achieve deterministic coupling of the cavity mode to the ion's vibrational state by selectively exciting vibrational state-changing transitions and by controlling the position of the ion in the standing wave field with nanometer-precision.
Optical microcavities allow to strongly confine light in small mode volumes and with long photon lifetimes. This confinement significantly enhances the interaction between light and matter inside the cavity, with applications such as optical trapping and cooling of nanoparticles, single-photon emission enhancement, quantum information processing, and sensing. For many applications, open resonators with direct access to the mode volume are necessary. Here we report on a scalable, open-access optical microcavity platform with mode volumes < 30 $λ^3$ and finesse approaching $5x10^5$. This result …
In the framework of cavity QED, we propose a practical scheme to purify dynamically a bipartite entangled state using short chains of atoms coupled to high-finesse optical cavities. In contrast to conventional entanglement purification protocols, we avoid CNOT gates, thus reducing complicated pulse sequences and superfluous qubit operations. Our interaction scheme works in a deterministic way, and together with entanglement distribution and swapping, opens a route towards efficient quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum communication.
We present a thorough analysis of single atom detection using optical cavities. The large set of parameters that influence the signal-to-noise ratio for cavity detection is considered, with an emphasis on detunings, probe power, cavity finesse and photon detection schemes. Real device operating restrictions for single photon counting modules and standard photodiodes are included in our discussion, with heterodyne detection emerging as the clearly favourable technique, particularly for detuned detection at high power.
We propose a scheme for entangling the optical and microwave output modes of the respective cavities by using a micro mechanical resonator. The micro-mechanical resonator on one side is capacitively coupled to the microwave cavity and on the other side is coupled to a high finesses optical cavity. We then show how this continuous variable entanglement can be profitably used to teleport the non-Gaussian number state |1> and the superposition (|0>+|1>)/\surd2 from the microwave cavity output mode onto an output of optical cavity mode with fidelity much larger than the no-cloning limit.
A high-finesse suspended mirror Fabry-Perot cavity is experimentally studied in a regime where radiation pressure and photothermal effect are both relevant. The competition between these phenomena, operating at different time scales, produces unobserved dynamical scenarios where an initial Hopf instability is followed by the birth of small-amplitude chaotic attractors which erratically but deterministically trigger optical spikes. The observed dynamical regimes are well reproduced by a detailed physical model of the system.
We have constructed an apparatus containing a linear ion trap and a high-finesse optical cavity in the ultraviolet spectral range. In our construction, we have avoided all organic materials inside the ultrahigh vacuum chamber. We show that, unlike previously reported, the optical cavity does not degrade in performance over a time scale of 9 months.
We report the experimental observation of the photothermal effect. The measurements are performed by modulating the laser power absorbed by the mirrors of two high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavities. The results are very well described by a recently proposed theoretical model [M. Cerdonio, L. Conti, A. Heidmann and M. Pinard, Phys. Rev. D 63 (2001) 082003], confirming the correctness of such calculations. Our observations and quantitative characterization of the photothermal effect demonstrate its critical importance for high sensitivity interferometric displacement measurements, as those necessary …
We report a process for fabricating high quality, defect-free spherical mirror templates suitable for developing high finesse optical Fabry-Perot resonators. The process utilizes the controlled reflow of borosilicate glass and differential pressure to produce mirrors with 0.3 nanometer surface roughness. The dimensions of the mirrors are in the 0.5-5mm range making them suitable candidates for integration with on-chip neutral atom and ion experiments where enhanced interaction between atoms and photons are required. Moreover the mirror curvature, dimension and placement is readily controlled a…
We study spontaneous emission of an atom near a nanofiber with two fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) mirrors. We show that the coupling between the atom and the guided modes of the nanofiber can be significantly enhanced by the FBG cavity even when the cavity finesse is moderate. We find that, when the fiber radius is 200 nm and the cavity finesse is about 30, up to 94% of spontaneous emission from the atom can be channeled into the guided modes in the overdamped-cavity regime. We show numerically and analytically that vacuum Rabi oscillations and strong coupling can occur in the FBG cavity even when …
The design of an experiment on the spontaneous crystallization of a laser-cooled, but thermal atomic cloud into a hexagonally structured phase is discussed. Atomic interaction is mediated by the dipole potential of an optical lattice formed spontaneously in a multi-mode degenerate cavity from single-mode longitudinal pumping. The length scale of the structure is given by the diffractive dephasing between the spontaneous sidebands and the on-axis pump. A linear stability indicates that the transition can be observed in a cavity of moderate finesse compatible with having the cavity mirrors outsi…
In our previous paper [Phys. Rev. A 84, 042303 (2011)], we proposed an efficient scheme to purify dynamically a bipartite entangled state using short chains of atoms coupled to high-finesse optical cavities. In contrast to conventional entanglement purification protocols, we avoid controlled-NOT gates and thus reduce complicated pulse sequences and superfluous qubit operations. In this paper, we significantly improve the output fidelity of remotely entangled atoms by introducing one additional entanglement protocol in each of the repeater nodes and by optimizing the laser beams required to con…
Optical high-finesse cavities are a well-known mean to enhance light-matter interactions. Despite large progress in the realization of strongly coupled light-matter systems, the controlled positioning of single solid emitters in cavity modes remains a challenge. We pursue the idea to use nanofibers with sub-wavelength diameter as a substrate for such emitters. This paper addresses the question how strongly optical nanofibers influence the cavity modes. We analyze the influence of the fiber position for various fiber diameters on the finesse of the cavity and on the shape of the modes.
Distribution of the entangled state of trapped atomic ions to long distance using quantum repeater protocol is considered. Indeed, the long distance is divided into short parts, and then using entanglement generation and entanglement swapping techniques in optomechanical cavities, the entanglement is distributed. To do the task, we perform interaction between trapped atomic ions in optomechanical cavities, operate proper measurements on trapped ions and also make Bell state measurement as a well-known way to swap the entanglement. Accordingly, the entanglement is distributed between target ion…
Concentric cavities can lead to strong photon-atom coupling without a need for high finesse or small physical-cavity volume. In a proof-of-principle experiment of this concept we demonstrate coupling of single Rb atoms to a 11mm long near-concentric cavity with a finesse F=138(2). Operating the cavity 1.65(1)$μ$m shorter than the critical length, we observe an atom-cavity coupling constant $g_0=2π\times 5.0(2)\,$MHz which exceeds the natural dipole decay rate $γ$ by a factor $g_0/γ=1.7(1)$.
Optical cavities are one of the best ways to increase atom-light coupling and will be a key ingredient for future quantum technologies that rely on light-matter interfaces. We demonstrate that traveling-wave "ring" cavities can achieve a greatly reduced mode waist $w$, leading to larger atom-cavity coupling strength, relative to conventional standing-wave cavities for given mirror separation and stability. Additionally, ring cavities can achieve arbitrary transverse-mode spacing simultaneously with the large mode-waist reductions. Following these principles, we build a parabolic atom-ring cavi…
We demonstrate that a photon echo can be implemented by all-optical means using an array of on-chip high-finesse ring cavities whose parameters are chirped in such a way as to support equidistant spectra of cavity modes. When launched into such a system, a classical or quantum optical signal -- even a single-photon field -- becomes distributed between individual cavities, giving rise to prominent coherence echo revivals at well-defined delay times, controlled by the chirp of cavity parameters. This effect enables long storage times for high-throughput broadband optical delay and quantum memory…
The ability to detect single photons with high efficiency is a crucial requirement for various quantum information applications. By combining the storage process of a quantum memory for photons with fluorescence-based quantum state measurement, it is in principle possible to achieve high efficiency photon counting in large ensembles of atoms. The large number of atoms can, however, pose significant problems in terms of noise stemming from imperfect initial state preparation and off-resonant fluorescence. We propose a concrete implementation of a photon number resolving detector based on an ion…
In this paper we study photon pairs generated in a nonlinear cavity, composed of a nonlinear crystal surrounded by mirrors, by the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion. We analyze two different regimes: singly-resonant cavities where the signal and idler modes are resonant, and doubly-resonant cavities where the pump mode is also resonant. We present analytic expressions for the joint spectral amplitude in these two cases, and study the reduction in emission bandwidth as the cavity coefficient finesse is increased. We also study the enhancement of the source brightness resulting fr…
The semiclassical dynamics of atoms are theoretically studied, when the atoms are confined inside a standing-wave high-finesse resonator. The atoms are cooled by scattering processes in which the photons of a transverse laser are coherently scattered into the cavity mode. We derive a Fokker-Planck equation for the atomic center-of-mass variables which allows us to determine the equations of motion in the semiclassical limit for any value of the intensity of the laser field. We extract its prediction for the dynamics when the resonator is essentially in the vacuum state and the atoms are cooled…
An electron floating on the liquid Helium is proposed to be trapped (by a micro-electrode set below the liquid Helium) in a high finesse cavity. Two lowest levels of the vertical motion of the electron acts as a two-level "atom", which could resonantly interact with the THz cavity. In the Lamb-Dicke regime, wherein the electron's in-plane activity region is much smaller than the wavelength of the cavity mode, the famous Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) could be realized. By applying an additional external classical laser beam to the electron, a driven JCM could also be implemented. With such a driv…
We present the results of theoretical and experimental studies of dispersively coupled (or "membrane in the middle") optomechanical systems. We calculate the linear optical properties of a high finesse cavity containing a thin dielectric membrane. We focus on the cavity's transmission, reflection, and finesse as a function of the membrane's position along the cavity axis and as a function of its optical loss. We compare these calculations with measurements and find excellent agreement in cavities with empty-cavity finesses in the range 10^4 to 10^5. The imaginary part of the membrane's index o…
Macroscopic mechanical objects and electromagnetic degrees of freedom couple to each other via radiation pressure. Optomechanical systems with sufficiently strong coupling are predicted to exhibit quantum effects and are a topic of considerable interest. Devices reaching this regime would offer new types of control of the quantum state of both light and matter and would provide a new arena in which to explore the boundary between quantum and classical physics. Experiments to date have achieved sufficient optomechanical coupling to laser-cool mechanical devices but have not yet reached the quan…
We study a range of radio-frequency ion trap geometries and investigate the effect of integrating dielectric cavity mirrors on their trapping potential. We aim to identify ion trap and cavity configurations that are best suited for achieving small cavity volumes and thus large ion-photon coupling as required for scalable quantum information networks. In particular, we investigate the trapping potential distortions caused by the dielectric material of the cavity mirrors for different mirror orientations with respect to the trapping electrodes, as well as for mirror misalignment. We also analyze…
We analyse the stability and dynamics of an ion chain confined inside a high-finesse optical resonator. When the dipolar transition of the ions strongly couples to one cavity mode, the mechanical effects of light modify the chain properties close to a structural transition. We focus on the linear chain close to the zigzag instability and show that linear and zigzag arrays are bistable for certain strengths of the laser pumping the cavity. For these regimes the chain is cooled into one of the configurations by cavity-enhanced photon scattering. The excitations of these structures mix photonic a…
We present a protocol that allows the generation of a maximally entangled state between individual atoms held in spatially separate cavities. Assuming perfect detectors and neglecting spontaneous emission from the atoms, the resulting idealized scheme is deterministic. Under more realistic conditions, when the the atom-cavity interaction departs from the strong coupling regime, and considering imperfect detectors, we show that the scheme is robust against experimental inefficiencies and yields probabilistic entanglement of very high fidelity.
Nearly concentric optical cavities can be used to prepare optical fields with a very small mode volume. We implement an anaclastic design of a such a cavity that significantly simplifies mode matching to the fundamental cavity mode. The cavity is shown to have diffraction-limited performance for a mode volume of $\approx10^4λ^3$. This is in sharp contrast with the behavior of cavities with plano-concave mirrors, where aberrations significantly increase the losses in the fundamental mode. We estimate the related cavity QED parameters and show that the proposed cavity design allows for strong co…
We report the realisation of a high-finesse open-access cavity array, tailored towards the creation of multiple coherent light-matter interfaces within a compact environment. We describe the key technical developments put in place to fabricate such a system, comprising the creation of tapered pyramidal substrates and an in-house laser machining setup. Cavities made from these mirrors are characterised, by laser spectroscopy, to possess similar optical properties to state-of-the-art fibre-tip cavities, but offer a compelling route towards improved performance, even when used to support only a s…
Atoms in high-finesse optical resonators interact via the photons they multiply scatter into the cavity modes. The dynamics is characterized by dispersive and dissipative optomechanical long-range forces, which are mediated by the cavity photons, and exhibits a steady state for certain parameter regimes. In standing-wave cavities the atoms can form stable spatial gratings. Moreover, their asymptotic distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann whose effective temperature is controlled by the laser parameters. In this work we show that in a two-mode standing-wave cavity the stationary state possesses th…

We report on trapping and cooling Li-6 atoms in a monolithic ring bowtie cavity. To make the cavity insensitive to magnetic fields used to tune atomic interactions, we constructed it entirely from fused silica and Zerodur. The components were assembled using hydroxide bonding, which we show can be compatible with ultra-high vacuum. Backscattering in high-finesse ring cavities readily causes trap intensity fluctuations and heating, but with phase-controlled bi-directional pumping the trap lifetime can be made long enough for quantum gas experiments in both the crossed-beam trap (unidirectional …
We theoretically studied the implementation of a quantum memory and an optical transistor in a system composed by a single atom trapped inside a high finesse cavity. In order to store and map the quantum state of an input pulse onto internal states of the single atom (quantum memory) we employ the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon (which can work out as an optical transistor) where the information can be transferred to the dark state of the atom modelled by a three-level system in a Λ-type configuration. In our model we consider a suitable temporal shape for the control…
We investigate the dynamics of a cold trapped ion coupled to the quantized field inside a high-finesse cavity. We have used an approach for preparing the SC states of motion of ion. This approach, based on unitary transformating the Hamiltonian, allows its exact diagonalization without performing the Lamb-Dicke aproximation. We show that is possible to generate a SC states having rather simple initial state preparation, e.g., the vacuum sate for both cavity field and the ion motion.
We investigate the dynamics of a cold trapped ion coupled to the quantized field inside a high-finesse cavity, considering exact resonance between the ionic internal levels and the field (carrier transition). We derive an intensity-dependent hamiltonian in which terms proportional to the square of the Lamb-Dicke parameter ($η$) are retained. We show that different nonclassical effects arise in the dynamics of the ionic population inversion, depending on the initial states of the vibrational motion/field and on the values of $η$.
Trapped ions are among the most promising platforms for quantum technologies. They are at the heart of the most precise clocks and sensors developed to date, which exploit the quantum coherence of a single electronic or motional degree of freedom of an ion. However, future high precision quantum metrology will require the use of entangled states of several degrees of freedom. Here we propose a protocol capable of generating high N00N states where the entanglement is shared between the motion of a trapped ion and an electromagnetic cavity mode, a so called hybrid configuration. We prove the fea…
Ultracold atoms in an ultrahigh-finesse optical cavity are a powerful platform to produce spin squeezing since photon of cavity mode can induce nonlinear spin-spin interaction and thus generate a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian $H_{\text{OAT}}=qJ_{x}^{2}$, whose corresponding maximal squeezing factor scales as $N^{-2/3}$, where $N$ is the atomic number. On the contrary, for the other two-axis twisting Hamiltonian $H_{\text{TAT}}=q(J_{x}^{2}-J_{y}^{2})$, the maximal squeezing factor scales as $N^{-1}$, approaching the Heisenberg limit. In this paper, inspired by recent experiments of cavity-assis…
We present the design and fabrication of nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in single crystal diamond for applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics. First, we describe three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations of a high quality factor (Q ~ 10^6) and small mode volume (V ~ 0.5 (λ/n)^3) device whose cavity resonance corresponds to the zero-phonon transition (637nm) of the Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color center in diamond. This high Q/V structure, which would allow for strong light-matter interaction, is achieved by gradually tapering the size of the photonic crystal holes betw…
We investigate the dynamics of cavity cooling of a single ion beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime and demonstrate a cooling limit of approximately 50% of the Doppler temperature using a high finesse cavity for the first time. We also study the statistical properties of the ion-cavity emission and present a model that maps the phonon states to the photon states. With this model, we explain the super-Poissonian photon distribution observed in our experiments and propose a method to estimate the ion temperature in a real-time manner based on the statistical behavior of the photon emission from the cavit…
