The monopole mass is revealed to be considerably modified in the thick braneworld paradigm, and depends on the position of the monopole in the brane as well. Accordingly, the monopole radius continuously increases, leading to an unacceptable setting that can be circumvented when the brane thickness has an upper limit. Despite such peculiar behavior, the quantum corrections accrued -- involving the classical monopole solution -- are shown to be still under control. We analyze the monopole's peculiarities also taking into account the localization of the gauge fields. Furthermore, some additional analysis in the thick braneworld context and the similar behavior evinced by the topological string are investigated.
String compactifications with D-branes may exhibit regular magnetic monopole solutions, whose presence does not rely on broken non-abelian gauge symmetry. These stringy monopoles exist on interesting metastable brane configurations, such as anti-D3 branes inside a flux compactification or D5-branes wrapping 2-cycles that are locally stable but globally trivial. In brane realizations of SM-like gauge theories, the monopoles carry one unit of magnetic hypercharge. Their mass can range from the string scale down to the multi-TeV regime.
We study a 7-dimensional brane world scenario with a Ricci-flat 3-brane residing in the core of a composite monopole defect, i.e. a defect composed of a 'tHooft-Polyakov and a global monopole. Admitting a direct interaction between the two bosonic sectors of the theory, we analyse the structure of the space-time in the limits of small, respectively large direct interaction coupling constant. For large direct interaction, the global monopole disappears from the system and leaves behind a negative cosmological constant in the bulk such that gravity-localising solutions are possible without the a…
We study monopole-instantons in M2-brane theories, focussing on the ABJM class of Chern-Simons gauge theories coupled to matter. We calculate calculate explicitly the 8-fermion term in the effective action induced by these monopole-instantons, and discuss their role in resolving a classical singularity in the moduli space. The results are compared with monopole-instantons in N=8 3d SYM and D-brane theories, as well the dual supergravity description as a membrane scattering process.
We study cosmological defect formation after brane inflation. The cosmological defects are corresponding to the branes that have less than three spacial dimensions in the uncompactified spacetime. Contrary to the previous arguments, production of monopoles and domain walls are not always negligible. Monopoles and domain walls are formed by the branes extended between mother branes.
We prove in two different ways that brane dynamics gives rise to all H-monopoles predicted by S-duality of N=4, 4-dimensional superstring compactifications. One method uses heterotic-type II duality and the self-dual 3-brane dynamics, the other uses the 5-brane description of small instantons in SO(32) superstrings.
We construct intersections of S-branes with waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles. There are several possible ways to add a monopole to an S-brane solution similar to p-branes. On the other hand, one may add a wave only to the transverse space of an S-brane unlike a p-brane where wave resides on its worldvolume. The metric function of the wave is a harmonic function of the remaining transverse directions and an extra condition on integration constants is needed. We also show that it is not possible to add an S-brane to p-brane intersections whose near horizon geometry has an AdS part.
We study the correspondence between IIb solitonic 1-branes and monopoles in the context of the 3-brane realization of $D=4$ $N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We show that a bound state of 1-branes stretching between two separated 3-branes exhibits a family of super-symmetric ground states that can be identified with the ADHMN construction of the moduli space of $SU(2)$ monopoles.. This identification is supported by the construction of the monopole gauge field as a space-time coupling in the quantum mechanical effective action of a 1-brane used as a probe. The analysis also reveals an intriguing …
We show that the fluxes of the various six-dimensional "gauge" theories are associated to below threshold bound states of D-branes with the NS-5-branes and KK-monopoles which preserve half of bulk supersymmetry. We then present the supergravity solutions that correspond to these bound states. In addition using the worldvolume solitons of IIA and IIB NS-5-branes and KK-monopoles, we investigate the sectors of the "gauge" theories that preserve one quarter of bulk supersymmetry. This leads to a generalization a supergravity solution which has the interpretation of two intersecting NS-5-branes at…
We study the properties of branes in supergravity theory. We investigate a class of systems consisting of an M5-brane in the Kaluza-Klein monopole background with 1/4 supersymmetry in 11-dimensions. In the near core region of the KK-monopoles, the exact supergravity solution corresponding to each of these configurations is obtained. Then we argue the compactified 10-dimensional systems and suggest a way of unambiguous identification of branes in this background. Here the location of Dirac string type singularity accompanied by the D6-branes plays an important role. The method is essentially th…
We construct the explicit worldvolume effective actions of the type IIB NS-5-brane and KK-monopole. These objects are obtained through a T-duality transformation from the IIA KK-monopole and the IIA NS-5-brane respectively. We show that the worldvolume field content of these actions is precisely that necessary to describe their worldvolume solitons. The IIB NS-5-brane effective action is shown to be related to the D-5-brane's by an S-duality transformation, suggesting the way to construct (p,q) 5-brane multiplets. The IIB KK-monopole is described by a gauged sigma model, in agreement with the …
In a recent paper it was shown that fundamental strings are null waves in Double Field Theory. Similarly, membranes are waves in exceptional extended geometry. Here the story is continued by showing how various branes are Kaluza-Klein monopoles of these higher dimensional theories. Examining the specific case of the E7 exceptional extended geometry, we see that all branes are both waves and monopoles. Along the way we discuss the O(d; d) transformation of localized brane solutions not associated to an isometry and how true T-duality emerges in Double Field Theory when the background possesses …
Monopole operators in Abelian N=4 Chern-Simons theories described by circular quiver diagrams are investigated. The magnetic charges of non-diagonal U(1) gauge symmetries form the SU(p)xSU(q) root lattice where p and q are numbers of untwisted and twisted hypermultiplets, respectively. For monopole operators corresponding to the root vectors, we propose a correspondence between the monopole operators and states of a wrapped M2-brane in the dual geometry.
Based on the DBI action for the four coincident non-BPS D9-branes in the type IIA string theory we demonstrate that the gauge symmetry breaking through the tachyon condensation into the generalized monopole of codimension five produces a pair of two coincident BPS D4-branes. The nontrivial gauge field configuration is studied and shown to yield the non-zero generalized magnetic charge. We discuss how this explicit demonstration is related with the higher K-theory group.
We study BPS monopoles in 4 dimensional N=4 SO(N) and $Sp(N)$ super Yang-Mills theories realized as the low energy effective theory of $N$ (physical and its mirror) parallel D3 branes and an {\it Orientifold 3 plane} with D1 branes stretched between them in type IIB string theory. Monopoles on D3 branes give the natural understanding by embedding in SU(N) through the constraints on both the asymptotic Higgs field (corresponding to the horizontal positions of D3 branes) and the magnetic charges (corresponding to the number of D1 branes) imposed by the O3 plane. The compatibility conditions of N…
We derive the Nahm construction of monopoles from exact tachyon condensation on unstable D-branes. The Dirac operator used in the Nahm construction is identified with the tachyon profile in our D-brane approach, and we provide physical interpretation of the procedures Nahm gave. Crucial is the introduction of infinite number of brane-antibranes from which arbitrary D-brane can be constrcuted, exhibitting a unified view of various D-branes. We explicitly show the equivalence of the D3-brane boundary state with the monopole profile and the D1-brane boundary state with the Nahm data as transverse…
We review the construction of the Kaluza-Klein monopole of the Type IIA theory in the most general case of a massive background, as well as its relation via T-duality with the Type IIB NS-5-brane. This last effective action is shown to be related by S-duality to the D5-brane effective action.
We study intersecting brane systems that realize a class of singular monopole configurations in four-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Singular monopoles are solutions to the Bogomolny equation on R^3 with a prescribed number of singularities corresponding to the insertion of 't Hooft defects. We use the brane construction to motivate a recent conjecture on the conditions for which the moduli space of solutions is non-empty. We also show how branes provide physical intuition for various aspects of the dimension formula derived in {arXiv:1404.5616}, including the contribution to the dimensio…
In this paper we analyse the vacuum polarization effects associated with a massless scalar field in the higher-dimensional spacetime. Specifically we calculate the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the square of the field, $<Φ^2(x)>_{Ren}$, induced by a global monopole in the "braneworld" scenario. In this context the global monopole lives in a $n=3$ dimensional sub-manifold of the higher-dimensional (bulk) spacetime, and our Universe is represented by a transverse flat $(p-1)-$ dimensional brane. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the general Green function admitting that t…
In the standard model, the electroweak Z-string can end on a Nambu monopole, whose mass is calculated to be 689 GeV from the current precise experimental data assuming the new particle with mass 125 GeV to be the Higgs boson. We study an extension of the standard model with additional singlet and triplet Higgs fields in the framework of N=1 supersymmetric field theory by using a D-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. We construct a D-brane configuration describing the electroweak symmetry breaking, and find a single D2-brane configuration describing a Z-string and a Nambu monopole at…
The double field theory monopole solution by Berman and Rudolph is shown to reproduce non-geometric backgrounds with non-vanishing Q- and R-flux upon an appropriate choice of physical and dual coordinates. The obtained backgrounds depend non-trivially on dual coordinates and have only trivial monodromies. Upon smearing the solutions along the dual coordinates one reproduces the known $5^2_2$ solution for the Q-brane and co-dimension 1 solution for the R-brane. The T-duality invariant magnetic charge is explicitly calculated for all these backgrounds and is found to be equal to the magnetic cha…
We study the four dimensional effective action of a system of D6-branes wrapped on the K3 manifold times a torus, allowing the volume of the internal manifolds to remain dynamical. An unwrapped brane is at best a Dirac monopole of the dual R-R sector field to which it couples. After wrapping, a brane is expected to behave as a BPS monopole, where the Higgs vacuum expectation value is set by the size of the K3. We determine the moduli space of an arbitrary number of these wrapped branes by introducing a time dependent perturbation of the static solution, and expanding the supergravity equations…
We study the structure of the monopole configuration in U(2) non-commutative super Yang-Mills theory. Our analysis consists of two steps: solving the BPS equation and then the eigenvalue equation in the non-commutative space. Calculation to the first non-trivial order in the non-commutativity parameter theta shows that the monopole exhibits a certain non-locality. This structure is precisely the one expected from the recent predictions by the brane-configuration technique.
M2 branes probing T-brane backgrounds in M-theory with ADE surface singularities perceive deformations on their worldvolume superpotentials by monopole operators. The dynamics and moduli spaces of the resulting theories can be studied using a dual description involving conventional superpotential terms and (the dimensional reduction of) class S trinion theories. By using the S-dual description of N=2 SU(N) SQCD with 2N flavors in four dimensions, we are able to study T-branes corresponding to all minimal nilpotent orbits for the whole ADE series. Our proposed dualities are supported by the mat…
We consider typeIIA supergravity solution of D2-branes and D3-branes localized within D6-branes in the near-core region of D6-branes. With these solutions we can calculate the spectrum of the glueball mass in QCD3 and QCD4. The equation of motion describing the dilaton has the same eigenvalues and the same glueball masses in QCD3 and QCD4. Glueball mass spectrum is the same in the near core region of D6-branes of their M-theory counterpart is KK monopole. We conclude that the glueball mass spectrum is the same in QCD3 and QCD4 by considering the `near-core' limit of D6-branes of which M-theory…
We obtain the brane setup describing 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $USp(2N_c)$ and $U(N_c)$ SQCD with monopole superpotentials. This classification follows from a complete analysis of affine and twisted affine compactifications from 4d. The analysis leads to a new duality for the unitary case that has been previously overlooked in the literature. We check this by matching of the three sphere partition function of the two sides of this new duality and find a perfect agreement. Furthermore we use the partition function to predict new 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for SQCD with monopole superpo…
A realization of E_{n+1} monopoles in string theory is given. The NS five brane stuck to an Orientifold eight plane is identified as the 't Hooft Polyakov monopole. Correspondingly, the moduli space of many such NS branes is identified with the moduli space of SU(2) monopoles. These monopoles transform in the spinor representation of an SO(2n) gauge group when n D8 branes are stacked upon the orientifold plane. This leads to a realization of E_{n+1} monopole moduli spaces. Charge conservation leads to a dynamical effect which does not allow the NS branes to leave the orientifold plane. This su…
Multidimensional configurations with Minkowski external space-time and a spherical global monopole in extra dimensions are discussed in the context of the brane world concept. The monopole is formed with a hedgehog-like set of scalar fields ϕ^i with a symmetry-breaking potential V depending on the magnitude ϕ^2 = ϕ^i ϕ^i. All possible kinds of globally regular configurations are singled out without specifying the shape of V(ϕ). These variants are governed by the maximum value ϕ_m of the scalar field, characterizing the energy scale of symmetry breaking. If ϕ_m < ϕ_cr (where ϕ_cr is a critical …
We investigate a braneworld model generated by a global monopole in the context of Brans-Dicke gravity. After solving the dynamical equations we found a model capable to alleviate the so-called hierarchy problem. The obtained framework is described by a hybrid compactification scheme endowed with a seven-dimensional spacetime, in which the brane has four non-compact dimensions and two curled extra dimensions. The relevant aspects of the resulting model are studied and the requirements to avoid the well known seesaw-like behavior are discussed. We show that under certain conditions it is possib…
The t'Hooft-Polyakov monopole mass can be substantially altered, in the thick GS and HC brane-world setup, and can be employed to constrain the brane thickness limit. In this work, we comprise a brief review regarding gauge fields localization in the string-like six dimensional brane-world models setup. The correction to the Coulomb's law in two models is studied. Besides, the monopole features are investigated from the point of view of the gauge fields localization in the string-like brane-worlds and its thickness.
We investigate brane physics in a universe with an extra dimensional global monopole and negative bulk cosmological constant. The graviton zero mode is naturally divergent; we thus invoke a physical cut-off to induce four dimensional gravity on a brane at the monopole core. Independently, the massive Kaluza-Klein modes have naturally compactified extra dimensions, inducing a discrete spectrum. This spectrum remains consistent with four dimensional gravity on the brane, even for small mass gap. Extra dimensional matter fields also induce four dimensional matter fields on the brane, with the sam…
We investigate dielectric branes in false vacua in Type IIB string theory. The dielectric branes are supported against collapsing by lower energy vacua inside spherical or tube-like branes. We claim that such branes can be seeds for semi-classical (or quantum mechanical) decay of the false vacua, which makes the life-time of the false vacua shorter. Also, we discuss a topology change of a bubble corresponding to the fuzzy monopole triggered by dissolving fundamental strings.
Motivated by the recent D-brane constructions of world-volume monopoles and instantons, we study the supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on $S^1 \times R^{3+1}$, spontaneously broken by a Wilson loop. In addition to the usual N-1 fundamental monopoles, the N-th BPS monopole appears from the Kaluza-Klein sector. When all N monopoles are present, net magnetic charge vanishes and the solution can be reinterpreted as a Wilson-loop instanton of unit Pontryagin number. The instanton/multi-monopole moduli space is explicitly constructed, and seen to be identical to a Coulomb phase moduli space of …
We construct the effective theory of intersecting branes and investigate the BPS monopoles in the theory. The monopoles obtained are the generalization of Nielsen-Olesen vortex. We study the properties of the solutions and interpret them as the D0-branes on the brane-intersections.
The Kaluza-Klein monopole has been recognized as a string background with significant non-geometric features: it must appear "localized" to winding strings to match the NS5-brane's localization on the T-dual circle. In this work, we explicitly construct this T-dual system in the doubled geometry formalism, which proves to successfully describe the duality despite a broken isometry on one side of the duality pair. We further suggest an extension of the doubled formalism to the gauged linear sigma models describing this system (both bosonic and supersymmetric) and show that previous calculations…
We study a five-dimensional field theory which contains a monopole (string) solution with chiral fermion zero modes. This monostring solution is a close analog of the fivebrane solution of M-theory. The cancellation of normal bundle anomalies parallels that for the M-theory fivebrane, in particular, the presence of a Chern-Simons term in the low-energy effective U(1) gauge theory plays a central role. We comment on the relationship between the the microscopic analysis of the world-volume theory and the low-energy analysis and draw some cautionary lessons for M-theory.
We describe the scattering of D-strings stretched between D3-branes, working from the D-string perspective. From the D3-brane perspective the ends of the D-strings are magnetic monopoles, and so the scattering we describe is equivalent to monopole scattering. Our aim is to test the prediction made by Manton for the energy radiated during monopole scattering.
We find and explore a class of dyonic instanton solutions which can be identified as the supertubes connecting two D4 branes. They correspond to a single monopole string and a pair of monopole antimonopole strings from the worldvolume view point of D4 branes.
We investigate the zero modes of the Kaluza-Klein monopole in M-theory and show that the Born-Infeld action and the Chern-Simons term of a D6-brane are reproduced to quadratic order in the field strength of the U(1) field on the brane.
A recently constructed limit of K3 has a long neck consisting of segments, each of which is a nilfold fibred over a line, that are joined together with Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The neck is capped at either end by a Tian-Yau space, which is non-compact, hyperkahler and asymptotic to a nilfold fibred over a line. We show that the type IIA string on this degeneration of K3 is dual to the type I$'$ string, with the Kaluza-Klein monopoles dual to the D8-branes and the Tian-Yau spaces providing a geometric dual to the O8 orientifold planes. At strong coupling, each O8-plane can emit a D8-brane to giv…
We present new non-Abelian solitonic configurations in the low energy effective theory describing a collection of N parallel D1--branes. These configurations preserve 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 of the spacetime supersymmetry. They are solutions to a set of generalised Nahm's equations which are related to self-duality equations in eight dimensions. Our solutions represent D1--branes which expand into fuzzy funnel configurations ending on collections of intersecting D3--branes. Supersymmetry dictates that such intersecting D3--branes must lie on a calibrated three-surface of spacetime and we argue…
We propose an effective action for the eleven-dimensional (bosonic) Kaluza-Klein monopole solution. The construction of the action requires that the background fields admit an Abelian isometry group. The corresponding sigma-model is gauged with respect to this isometry. The gauged sigma-model is the source for the monopole solution. A direct (double) dimensional reduction of the action leads to the effective action of a 10-dimensional D-6-brane (IIA Kaluza-Klein monopole). We also show that the effective action of the 10-dimensional heterotic Kaluza-Klein monopole (which is a truncation of the…
We calculate the energy radiated during the scattering of two D-strings stretched between two D3-branes, working from the Born-Infeld action for the D-strings. The ends of the D-strings are magnetic monopoles from the point of view of the gauge theory living on the D3-branes, and so the scattering we describe is equivalent to monopole scattering. Our results suggest that no energy is radiated during the scattering, in contrast to the monopole result of ref. [2].
Non-abelian gauge theories in the Higgs phase admit a startling variety of BPS solitons. These include domain walls, vortex strings, confined monopoles threaded on vortex strings, vortex strings ending on domain walls, monopoles threaded on strings ending on domain walls, and more. After presenting a self-contained review of these objects, including several new results on the dynamics of domain walls, we go on to examine the possible interactions of solitons of various types. We point out the existence of a classical binding energy when the string ends on the domain wall which can be thought o…
In the presence of a background supergravity flux, N M2-branes will expand via the Myers effect into M5-branes wrapped on a fuzzy three-sphere. In previous work the fluctuations of the M2-branes were shown to be described by the five-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory associated to D4-branes. We show that the ABJM prescription for eleven-dimensional momentum in terms of magnetic flux lifts to an instanton flux of the effective five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere, giving an M-theory interpretation for these instantons.
We review and extend results on higher-curvature corrections to different configurations describing a superposition of heterotic strings, KK monopoles, solitonic 5-branes and momentum waves. Depending on which sources are present, the low-energy fields describe a black hole, a soliton or a naked singularity. We show that this property is unaltered when perturbative higher-curvature corrections are included, provided the sources are fixed. On the other hand, this character may be changed by appropriate introduction (or removal) of sources regardless of the presence of curvature corrections, whi…
It is shown that the worldvolume field theory of a single D3-brane in a supergravity D3-brane background admits finite energy, and non-singular, abelian monopoles and dyons preserving 1/2 or 1/4 of the ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry and saturating a Bogomol'nyi-type bound. The 1/4 supersymmetric solitons provide a worldvolume realisation of string-junction dyons. We also discuss the dual M-theory realisation of the 1/2 supersymmetric dyons as finite tension self-dual strings on the M5-brane, and of the 1/4 supersymmetric dyons as their intersections.
We investigate the Kaluza-Klein reductions to ten dimensions of the purely gravitational half-BPS M-theory backgrounds: the M-wave and the Kaluza-Klein monopole. We determine the moduli space of smooth (supersymmetric) Kaluza-Klein reductions by classifying the freely-acting spacelike Killing vectors which preserve some Killing spinor. As a consequence we find a wealth of new supersymmetric IIA configurations involving composite and/or bound-state configurations of waves, D0 and D6-branes, Kaluza-Klein monopoles in type IIA and flux/nullbranes, and some other new configurations. Some new featu…
A brane picture in Type IIA superstring for the Yang Monopole is reconsidered. It makes use of D2 and D4-branes wrapped on cycles in the K3 surface. When the model was first presented some problems concerning the charges of the monopoles arised. In this paper, they are shown to be cured by the model itself. Surprisingly, the incompatibility between the multi-charge configuration and the spherical symmetry of the Yang Monopole is seen in the brane description as the emergence of the enhancon shell and the fuzzy geometry. This consistency is deep and surprising, and is the point that triggered t…
In this lecture I review recent results on the first order equations describing BPS extremal states, in particular N=2 extremal black-holes. The role of special geometry is emphasized also in the rigid theory and a comparison is drawn with the supersymmetric derivation of instantons and hyperinstantons in topological field theories. Work in progress on the application of solvable Lie algebras to the discussion of BPS states in maximally extended supergravities is outlined.
We study BPS excitations in M5-M2-brane configurations with a compact transverse direction, which are also relevant for type IIa and IIb little string theories. These configurations are dual to a class of toric elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds $X_N$ with manifest $SL(2, \mathbb{Z}) \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry. They admit two dual gauge theory descriptions. For both, the non-perturbative partition function can be written as an expansion of the topological string partition function of $X_N$ with respect to either of the two modular parameters. We analyze the resulting BPS …
Boundary conditions play an important role in the ADHMN construction of BPS monopole solutions. In this paper we show how different types of boundary conditions can be related to each other by removing monopoles to spatial infinity. In particular, we use this method to show how the jumping data naturally emerge. The results can be interpreted in the D-brane picture and provide a better understanding of the derivation of the ADHMN construction from D-branes. We comment briefly on the cases with non-Abelian unbroken symmetry and massless monopoles.
We study a codimension 2 braneworld in the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We carefully examine the structure of possible singularities in the system which characterize the braneworld through matching conditions. Consequently, we find that the thickness of the brane can be incorporated as the distributional source, which we dub quasi-thickness. On the basis of our formalism, we analyze the linearized gravity and show the conventional Einstein gravity can be recovered on the brane. In the nonlinear regime, however, we find corrections due to the thickness and the bulk geometry. We also point out…
We study SU(2) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics with N=2,4,8 and 16 supercharges. This describes the non-relativistic dynamics of a pair of D0-branes moving in d=3,4,6 and 10 spacetime dimensions respectively. We show that as the D0-branes orbit, states undergo a Berry holonomy described by the four Hopf maps. For the N=2 theory, the associated Hopf map is the Mobius bundle and its effect is to turn the D0-branes into anyons with exchange statistics +i and -i. For the N=4,8 and 16 theories, the Hopf maps give rise to Berry connections that are familiar to physicists: the U(1) Dirac monopole; the S…
In this review, we give a brief introduction on the aspects of some extra dimension models and the five-dimensional thick brane models in extended theories of gravity. First, we briefly introduce the Kaluza-Klein theory, the domain wall model, the large extra dimension model, and the warped extra dimension models. Then some thick brane solutions in extended theories of gravity are reviewed. Finally, localization of bulk matter fields on thick branes is discussed.
We consider cosmic loop production by long string interactions in cosmological models with compact extra dimensions. In the case that the compact manifold is not simply connected, we focus on the possibility of loops wrapping around non-trivial cycles and becoming topologically trapped. Such loops, denoted cycloops, behave like matter in the radiation era, posing a potential monopole problem. We calculate the number distribution and the energy density of these objects as functions of cosmic time and use them to study cosmological constraints imposed on simple brane inflation models. For typica…
We investigate magnetic monopole solutions of the non-abelian DBI action describing 2 coincident non-BPS D9-branes in flat space. Just as in the case of kink and vortex solitonic tachyon solutions of the full DBI non-BPS actions, as previously analyzed by Sen, these monopole configurations are singular in the first instance and require regularization. We discuss a suitable non-abelian ansatz and show it solves the equations of motion to leading order in the regularization parameter. Fluctuations are studied and shown to describe a codimension 3 BPS D6-brane. A formula is derived for its tensio…
We discuss non-perturbative effects in the ABJM model due to monopole instantons. We begin by constructing the instanton solutions in the $U(2)\times U(2)$ model, explicitly, and computing the Euclidean action. The Wick-rotated Lagrangian is complex and its BPS monopole instantons are found to be a delicate version of the usual 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solutions. They are generically 1/3 BPS but become 1/2 BPS at special locus in the moduli space of two M2-branes, yet each instanton carries eight fermionic zero modes, regardless of the vacuum choice. The low energy effective action induced b…
In this paper, thick branes generated by mimetic scalar field are investigated. Three typical thick brane models are constructed and the linear tensor and scalar perturbations are analyzed. These branes have different inner structures, some of which are absent in general relativity. For each brane model, the solution is stable under both tensor and scalar perturbations. The tensor zero modes are localized on the branes, while the scalar perturbations do not propagate and they are not localized on the brane. As the branes split into multi sub-branes for specific parameters, the potentials of th…
It is shown that two gravitating scalar fields may form a thick brane in 5D spacetime. The necessary condition for the existence of such a regular solution is that the scalar fields potential must have local and global minima.
