We consider majorization problems in the non-commutative setting. More specifically, suppose $E$ and $F$ are ordered normed spaces (not necessarily lattices), and $0 \leq T \leq S :E \to F$. If $S$ belongs to a certain ideal (for instance, the ideal of compact or Dunford-Pettis operators), does it follow that $T$ belongs to that ideal as well? We concentrate on the case when $E$ and $F$ are $C^*$-algebras, preduals of von Neumann algebras, or non-commutative function spaces. In particular, we show that, for $C^*$-algebras $\A$ and ${\mathcal{B}}$, the following are equivalent: (1) at least one of the two conditions holds: (i) $\A$ is scattered, (ii) ${\mathcal{B}}$ is compact; (2) if $0 \leq T \leq S : \A \to {\mathcal{B}}$, and $S$ is compact, then $T$ is compact.
Boundedness and compactness properties of multiplication operators on quantum (non-commutative) function spaces are investigated. For endomorphic multiplication operators these properties can be characterized in the setting of quantum symmetric spaces. For non-endomorphic multiplication operators these properties can be completely characterized in the setting of quantum $L^p$-spaces and a partial solution obtained in the more general setting of quantum Orlicz spaces.
The paper is discussing infinite divisibility in the setting of operator-valued boolean, free and, more general, c-free independences. Particularly, using Hilbert bimodules and non-commutative functions techniques, we obtain analogues of the Levy-Hincin integral representation for infinitely divisible real measures.
The concepts of Riesz type and cotype of a given Banach space are extended to a non-commutative setting. First, the Banach space is replaced by an operator space. The notion of quantized orthonormal system, which plays the role of the orthonormal system in the classical setting, is then defined. The Fourier type and cotype of an operator space with respect to a non-commutative compact group fit in this context. Also, the quantized analogs of Rademacher and Gaussian systems are treated. All this is used to obtain an operator space version of the classical theorem of Kwapień characterizing Hilbe…
The main objects of study in this paper are those functionals that are analytic in the sense that they annihilate the non-commutative disc algebra. In the classical univariate case, a theorem of F. and M. Riesz implies that such functionals must be given as integration against an absolutely continuous measure on the circle. We develop generalizations of this result to the multivariate non-commutative setting, upon reinterpreting the classical result. In one direction, we show that the GNS representation naturally associated to an analytic functional on the Cuntz algebra cannot have any singula…
We generalize an important class of Banach spaces, namely the $M$-embedded Banach spaces, to the non-commutative setting of operator spaces. The one-sided $M$-embedded operator spaces are the operator spaces which are one-sided $M$-ideals in their second dual. We show that several properties from the classical setting, like the stability under taking subspaces and quotients, unique extension property, Radon Nikod$\acute {\rm{y}}$m Property and many more, are retained in the non-commutative setting. We also discuss the dual setting of one-sided $L$-embedded operator spaces.
Around 1980 Connes extended the notions of geometry to the non-commutative setting. Since then {\it non-commutative geometry} has turned into a very active area of mathematical research. As a first non-trivial example of a non-commutative manifold Connes discussed subalgebras of rotation algebras, the so-called {\it non-commutative tori}. In the last two decades researchers have unrevealed the relevance of non-commutative tori in a variety of mathematical and physical fields. In a recent paper we have pointed out that non-commutative tori appear very naturally in Gabor analysis. In the present…
We extend results on analytic complex measures on the complex unit circle to a non-commutative multivariate setting. Identifying continuous linear functionals on a certain self-adjoint subspace of the Cuntz--Toeplitz $C^*-$algebra, the free disk operator system, with non-commutative (NC) analogues of complex measures, we refine a previously developed Lebesgue decomposition for positive NC measures to establish an NC version of the Frigyes and Marcel Riesz Theorem for `analytic' measures, i.e. complex measures with vanishing positive moments. The proof relies on novel results on the order prope…
Long-range dependence in time series may yield non-central limit theorems. We show that there are analogous time series in free probability with limits represented by multiple Wigner integrals, where Hermite processes are replaced by non-commutative Tchebycheff processes. This includes the non-commutative fractional Brownian motion and the non-commutative Rosenblatt process.
We define Schatten classes of adjointable operators on Hilbert modules over abelian $C^*$-algebras. Many key features carry over from the Hilbert space case. In particular, the Schatten classes form two-sided ideals of compact operators and are equipped with a Banach norm and a $C^*$-valued trace with the expected properties. For trivial Hilbert bundles, we show that our Schatten-class operators can be identified bijectively with Schatten-norm-continuous maps from the base space into the Schatten classes on the Hilbert space fiber, with the fiberwise trace. As applications, we introduce the $C…
In the setting of finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal A}$ we define what we call a Riemannian metric for ${\mathcal A}$, which when ${\mathcal A}$ is commutative is very closely related to a finite resistance network. We explore the relationship with Dirichlet forms and corresponding seminorms that are Markov and Leibniz, with corresponding matricial structure and metric on the state space. We also examine associated Laplace and Dirac operators, quotient energy seminorms, resistance distance, and the relationship with standard deviation.
We prove that non-commutative martingale transforms are of weak type $(1,1)$. More precisely, there is an absolute constant $C$ such that if $\M$ is a semi-finite von Neumann algebra and $(\M_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is an increasing filtration of von Neumann subalgebras of $\M$ then for any non-commutative martingale $x=(x_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ in $L^1(\M)$, adapted to $(\M_n)_{n=1}^\infty$, and any sequence of signs $(ε_n)_{n=1}^\infty$, $$\left\Vert ε_1 x_1 + \sum_{n=2}^N ε_n(x_n -x_{n-1}) \right\Vert_{1,\infty} \leq C \left\Vert x_N \right\Vert_1 $$ for $N\geq 2$. This generalizes a result of Burkholde…
Non-commutative graph theory is an operator space generalization of graph theory. Well known graph parameters such as the independence number and Lovász theta function were first generalized to this setting by Duan, Severini, and Winter. We introduce two new generalizations of the chromatic number to non-commutative graphs and provide a generalization of the Lovász sandwich inequality. In particular, we show the chromatic number of the orthogonal complement of a non-commutative graph is bounded below by its theta number. We also provide a generalization of both Sabadussi's Theorem and Hedetnie…
We study dynamical optimal transport metrics between density matrices associated to symmetric Dirichlet forms on finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras. Our setting covers arbitrary skew-derivations and it provides a unified framework that simultaneously generalizes recently constructed transport metrics for Markov chains, Lindblad equations, and the Fermi Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup. We develop a non-nommutative differential calculus that allows us to obtain non-commutative Ricci curvature bounds, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, transport-entropy inequalities, and spectral gap estimates.
We study different possibilities to apply the principles of rough paths theory in a non-commutative probability setting. First, we extend previous results obtained by Capitaine, Donati-Martin and Victoir in Lyons' original formulation of rough paths theory. Then we settle the bases of an alternative non-commutative integration procedure, in the spirit of Gubinelli's controlled paths theory, and which allows us to revisit the constructions of Biane and Speicher in the free Brownian case. New approximation results are also derived from the strategy.
For the free probability analogue of Euclidean space endowed with the Gaussian measure we apply the approach of Arnold to derive Euler equations for a Lie algebra of non-commutative vector fields which preserve a certain trace. We extend the equations to vector fields satisfying non-commutative smoothness requirements. We introduce a cyclic vorticity and show that it satisfies a vorticity equation and that it produces a family of conserved quantities.
Given a compact, metric space X, we show that the commutative C*-algebra C(X) is semiprojective if and only if X is an absolute neighborhood retract of dimension at most one. This confirms a conjecture of Blackadar. Generalizing to the non-unital setting, we derive a characterization of semiprojectivity for separable, commutative C*-algebras. As further application of our findings we verify two conjectures of Loring and Blackadar in the commutative case, and we give a partial answer to the question, when a commutative C*-algebra is weakly (semi-)projective.
In this article, we introduce the notions of weak boundary repre- sentation, quasi hyperrigidity and weak peak points in the non-commutative setting for operator systems in C* algebras. An analogue of Saskin theorem relating quasi hyperrigidity and weak Choquet boundary for particular classes of C* algebras is proved. We also show that, if an irreducible representation is a weak boundary representation and weak peak then it is a boundary repre- sentation. Several examples are provided to illustrate these notions. It is also observed that isometries on Hilbert spaces play an important role in t…
After an introduction to some basic issues in non-commutative geometry (Gel'fand duality, spectral triples), we present a "panoramic view" of the status of our current research program on the use of categorical methods in the setting of A.Connes' non-commutative geometry: morphisms/categories of spectral triples, categorification of Gel'fand duality. We conclude with a summary of the expected applications of "categorical non-commutative geometry" to structural questions in relativistic quantum physics: (hyper)covariance, quantum space-time, (algebraic) quantum gravity.
