The main objects of study in this paper are those functionals that are analytic in the sense that they annihilate the non-commutative disc algebra. In the classical univariate case, a theorem of F. and M. Riesz implies that such functionals must be given as integration against an absolutely continuous measure on the circle. We develop generalizations of this result to the multivariate non-commutative setting, upon reinterpreting the classical result. In one direction, we show that the GNS representation naturally associated to an analytic functional on the Cuntz algebra cannot have any singular summand. Following a different interpretation, we seek weak-$*$ continuous extensions of analytic functionals on the free disc operator system. In contrast with the classical setting, such extensions do not always exist, and we identify the obstruction precisely in terms of the so-called universal structure projection. We also apply our ideas to commutative algebras of multipliers on some complete Nevanlinna--Pick function spaces.
Henkin functionals on non-commutative $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras have recently emerged as a pivotal link between operator theory and complex function theory in several variables. Our aim in this paper is characterize these functionals through a notion of absolute continuity, inspired by a seminal theorem of Cole and Range. To do this, we recast the problem as a question in non-commutative measure theory. We develop a Glicksberg--König--Seever decomposition of the dual space of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra into an absolutely continuous part and a singular part, relative to a fixed convex subset of sta…
We extend results on analytic complex measures on the complex unit circle to a non-commutative multivariate setting. Identifying continuous linear functionals on a certain self-adjoint subspace of the Cuntz--Toeplitz $C^*-$algebra, the free disk operator system, with non-commutative (NC) analogues of complex measures, we refine a previously developed Lebesgue decomposition for positive NC measures to establish an NC version of the Frigyes and Marcel Riesz Theorem for `analytic' measures, i.e. complex measures with vanishing positive moments. The proof relies on novel results on the order prope…
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
We define the Hardy spaces of free noncommutative functions on the noncommutative polydisc and the noncommutative ball and study their basic properties. Our technique combines the general methods of noncommutative function theory and asymptotic formulae for integration over the unitary group. The results are the first step in developing the general theory of free noncommutative bounded symmetric domains on the one hand and in studying the asymptotic free noncommutative analogues of classical spaces of analytic functions on the other.
It is a classical result in complex analysis that the class of functions that arise as the Cauchy transform of probability measures may be characterized entirely in terms of their analytic and asymptotic properties. Such transforms are a main object of study in non-commutative probability theory as the function theory encodes information on the probability measures and the various convolution operations. In extending this theory to operator-valued free probability theory, the analogue of the Cauchy transform is a non-commutative function with domain equal to the non-commutative upper-half plan…
We construct a non-commutative Aleksandrov-Clark measure for any element in the operator-valued free Schur class, the closed unit ball of the free Toeplitz algebra of vector-valued full Fock space over $\mathbb{C} ^d$. Here, the free (analytic) Toeplitz algebra is the unital weak operator topology (WOT)-closed algebra generated by the component operators of the free shift, the row isometry of left creation operators. This defines a bijection between the free operator-valued Schur class and completely positive maps (non-commutative AC measures) on the operator system of the free disk algebra, t…
Let $ϕ$ be an isometric automorphism of the non-commutative disc algebra $\fA_n$ for $n \geq 2$. We show that every contractive covariant representation of $(\fA_n, ϕ)$ dilates to a unitary covariant representation of $(Ø_n, ϕ)$. Hence the C*-envelope of the semicrossed product $\fA_n \times_ϕ \bZ^+$ is $Ø_n \times_ϕ \bZ$.
In this paper we propose a new approach to the central limit theorem (CLT), based on functions of bounded Féchet variation for the continuously differentiable linear statistics of random matrix ensembles which relies on: a weaker form of a large deviation principle for the operator norm; a Poincaré-type inequality for the linear statistics; and the existence of a second-order limit distribution. This approach frames into a single setting many known random matrix ensembles and, as a consequence, classical central limit theorems for linear statistics are recovered and new ones are established, e…
The Smirnov class for the classical Hardy space is the set of ratios of bounded analytic functions on the open complex unit disk with outer denominators. This definition extends naturally to the commutative and non-commutative multi-variable settings of the Drury-Arveson space and the full Fock space over $\mathbb C ^d$. Identifying the Fock space with the free multi-variable Hardy space of non-commutative or free holomorphic functions on the non-commutative open unit ball, we prove that any closed, densely-defined operator affiliated to the right free multiplier algebra of the full Fock space…
Let $\mathfrak A$ be a maximal subdiagonal algebra in a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. If every right invariant subspace of $\mathfrak A$ in the non-commutative Hardy space $H^2$ is of Beurling type, then we say $\mathfrak A$ to be type 1. We determine generators of these algebras and consider a Riesz type factorization theorem for the non-commutative $H^1$ space. We show that the right analytic Toeplitz algebra on the non-commutative Hardy space $H^p$ associated with a type 1 subdiagonal algebra with multiplicity 1 is hereditary reflexive.
The paper is discussing infinite divisibility in the setting of operator-valued boolean, free and, more general, c-free independences. Particularly, using Hilbert bimodules and non-commutative functions techniques, we obtain analogues of the Levy-Hincin integral representation for infinitely divisible real measures.
A rational function belongs to the Hardy space, $H^2$, of square-summable power series if and only if it is bounded in the complex unit disk. Any such rational function is necessarily analytic in a disk of radius greater than one. The inner-outer factorization of a rational function, $\mathfrak{r} \in H^2$ is particularly simple: The inner factor of $\mathfrak{r}$ is a (finite) Blaschke product and (hence) both the inner and outer factors are again rational. We extend these and other basic facts on rational functions in $H^2$ to the full Fock space over $\mathbb{C}^d$, identified as the \emph{…
This in an introduction to the theory of non-commutative distributions of non-commuting operators or random matrices. Starting from the basic problem to find a good approach to the meaning of "non-commutative distribution" we will, in particular, cover: free analysis, which is a version of complex analysis for several non-commuting variables; the operator-valued version of free probability theory (combinatorial but also analytic aspects); the linearization trick to reduce non-linear scalar problems to linear operator-valued problems; the combination of operator-valued convolution and lineariza…
The main objects under study are quotients of multiplier algebras of certain complete Nevanlinna--Pick spaces, examples of which include the Drury--Arveson space on the ball and the Dirichlet space on the disc. We are particularly interested in the non-commutative Choquet boundaries for these quotients. Arveson's notion of hyperrigidity is shown to be detectable through the essential normality of some natural multiplication operators, thus extending previously known results on the Arveson--Douglas conjecture. We also highlight how the non-commutative Choquet boundaries of these quotients are i…
In this paper, a connection between bi-free probability and the theory of non-commutative stochastic processes is examined. Specifically it is demonstrated that the transition operators for non-commutative stochastic processes can be modelled using technology from bi-free probability. Several important examples are recovered with this approach and new formula are obtained for processes with free increments. The benefits of this approach are also discussed.
We aim to characterize the category of injective *-homomorphisms between commutative C*-subalgebras of a given C*-algebra A. We reduce this problem to finding a weakly terminal commutative subalgebra of A, and solve the latter for various C*-algebras, including all commutative ones and all type I von Neumann algebras. This addresses a natural generalization of the Mackey-Piron programme: which lattices are those of closed subspaces of Hilbert space? We also discuss the way this categorified generalization differs from the original question.
Let $V$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field $F$ of characteristic zero and with residue field $\mathbb{F}$. We introduce analytic cyclic homology of complete torsion-free bornological algebras over $V$. We prove that it is homotopy invariant, stable, invariant under certain nilpotent extensions, and satisfies excision. We use these properties to compute it for tensor products with dagger completions of Leavitt path algebras. If $R$ is a smooth commutative $V$-algebra of relative dimension $1$, then we identify its analytic cyclic homology with Berthelot's rigid cohomology…
A non-commutative formula for the isotropic magneto-electric response of disordered insulators under magnetic fields is derived using the methods of non-commutative geometry. Our result follows from an explicit evaluation of the Ito derivative with respect to the magnetic field of the non-commutative formula for the electric polarization reported in Ref. 1. The quantization, topological invariance and connection to a second Chern number of the magneto-electric response are discussed in the context of 3-dimensional, disordered, time-reversal or inversion symmetric topological insulators.
The theory of the higher Chern numbers in the presence of strong disorder is developed. Sharp quantization and homotopy invariance conditions are provided. The relevance of the result to the field of strongly disordered topological insulators is discussed.
