We present high S/N, moderate resolution near-infrared spectra, as well as 10 micron imaging, for the brightest members of the central stellar cluster in the W40 HII region, obtained using the SpeX and MIRSI instruments at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility. Using these observations combined with archival Spitzer Space Telescope data, we have determined the spectral classifications, extinction, distances, and spectral energy distributions for the brightest members of the cluster. Of the eight objects observed, we identify four main sequence (MS) OB stars, two Herbig Ae/Be stars, and two low-mass young stellar objects. Strong HeI absorption at 1.083 micron in the MS star spectra strongly suggests that at least some of these sources are in fact close binaries. Two out of the four MS stars also show significant infrared excesses typical of circumstellar disks. Extinctions and distances were determined for each MS star by fitting model stellar atmospheres to the SEDs. We estimate a distance to the cluster of between 455 and 535 pc, which agrees well with earlier (but far less precise) distance estimates. We conclude that the late-O star we identify is the dominant source of LyC luminosity needed to power the W40 HII region and is the likely source of the stellar wind that has blown a large (~4 pc) pinched-waist bubble observed in wide field mid-IR images. We also suggest that 3.6 cm radio emission observed from some of the sources in the cluster is likely not due to emission from ultra-compact HII regions, as suggested in other work, due to size constraints based on our derived distance to the cluster. Finally, we also present a discussion of the curious source IRS 3A, which has a very strong mid-IR excess (despite its B3 MS classification) and appears to be embedded in a dusty envelope roughly 2700 AU in size.
We present ALMA CO (2-1) detections of 24 star-forming Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) over $0.2<z<1.2$, constituting the largest and most distant sample of molecular gas measurements in BCGs to date. The BCGs are selected from the Spitzer Adaptation of the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (SpARCS) to be IR-bright and therefore star-forming. We find that molecular gas is common in star-forming BCGs, detecting CO at a detection rate of 80% in our target sample of 30 objects. We additionally provide measurements of the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, calculated from existing MIPS 24 $μ$…
The Evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies in the Nearby Universe I: Colours and Stellar Masses from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Wide Infrared Survey Explorer
Multiwavelength radio observations of a Brightest Cluster Galaxy at z=1.71: Detection of a modest Active Galactic Nucleus and evidence for extended star formation
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) are typically massive ellipticals at the centers of clusters. They are believed to experience strong environmental processing, and their mass assembly and star formation history are still debated. We have selected three star forming BCGs in the equatorial field of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) at intermediate redshifts. We have observed them with the IRAM-30m telescope in the first three CO transitions. We remarkably detected all BCGs at high signal-to-noise ratio ${\rm S/N}\simeq(3.8-10.2)$, for a total of 7 detected lines out of 8, corresponding to a success…
We present new, deep, narrow- and broad-band Hubble Space Telescope observations of seven of the most star-forming brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Continuum-subtracted [O II] maps reveal the detailed, complex structure of warm ($T \sim 10^4$ K) ionized gas filaments in these BCGs, allowing us to measure spatially-resolved star formation rates (SFRs) of ~60-600 Msun/yr. We compare the SFRs in these systems and others from the literature to their intracluster medium (ICM) cooling rates (dM/dt), measured from archival Chandra X-ray data, finding a best-fit relation of log(SFR) = (1.67+/-0.17) …
We report the discovery of J0121+0025, an extremely luminous and young star-forming galaxy (M_UV = -24.11, log[L_Lya / erg s^-1] = 43.8) at z = 3.244 showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (f_esc,abs ~ 40%). High signal-to-noise ratio rest-frame UV spectroscopy with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveals a high significance (7.9 sigma) emission below the Lyman limit (< 912A), with a flux density level f_900A = 0.78 +/- 0.10 uJy, and strong P-Cygni in wind lines of OVI 1033A, NV 1240A and CIV 1550A that are indicative of a young age of the starburst (<10 Myr). The spectrum is rich in stell…
We present results of [CII]$\,158\,\rm{μm}$ emission line observations, and report the spectroscopic redshift confirmation of a strongly lensed ($μ\sim20$) star-forming galaxy, MACS0308-zD1 at $z=6.2078\pm0.0002$. The [CII] emission line is detected with a signal-to-noise ratio $>6$ within the rest-frame UV bright clump of the lensed galaxy (zD1.1) and exhibits multiple velocity components; the narrow [CII] has a velocity full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of $110\pm20\,\rm{km/s}$, while broader [CII] is seen with an FWHM of $230\pm20\,\rm{km/s}$. The broader [CII] component is blueshifted ($-80\p…

We study the star-formation activity in a sample of $\sim$ 56,000 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at $0.05 < z < 0.42$ using optical and infra-red data from SDSS and WISE. We estimate stellar masses and star-formation rates (SFR) through SED fitting and study the evolution of the SFR with redshift as well as the effects of BCG stellar mass, cluster halo mass and cooling time on star formation. Our BCGs have $SFR = 1.4\times10^{-3}-275.2$ [$\rm M_{\odot}$/yr] and $sSFR=5 \times 10^{-15}-6 \times 10^{-10}$ [yr$^{-1}$] . We find that star-forming BCGs are more abundant at higher redshifts and h…

We have studied a sample of more than 25 000 young stars with proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes from the Gaia DR2 catalogue. The relative errors of their parallaxes do not exceed 10\%. The selection of stars belonging to active star-forming regions was made by Marton et al. based on data from the Gaia DR2 catalogue by invoking infrared measurements from the WISE and Planck catalogues. Low-mass T Tauri stars constitute the majority of sample stars. The following parameters of the angular velocity of Galactic rotation have been found from them: $Ω_0 =28.40\pm0.11$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}…
Observations of 170 local ($z\lesssim0.08$) galaxy clusters in the northern hemisphere have been obtained with the Wendelstein Telescope Wide Field Imager (WWFI). We correct for systematic effects such as point-spread function broadening, foreground star contamination, relative bias offsets, and charge persistence. Background inhomogeneities induced by scattered light are reduced down to $Δ{\rm SB} > 31~g'$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ by large dithering and subtraction of night-sky flats. Residual background inhomogeneities brighter than ${\rm SB}_σ< 27.6~g'$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ caused by galactic cirrus …
Large scale outflows in star-forming galaxies are observed to be ubiquitous, and are a key aspect of theoretical modeling of galactic evolution in a cosmological context, the focus of the SMAUG (Simulating Multiscale Astrophysics to Understand Galaxies) project. Gas blown out from galactic disks, similar to gas within galaxies, consists of multiple phases with large contrasts of density, temperature, and other properties. To study multiphase outflows as emergent phenomena, we run a suite of ~pc-resolution local galactic disk simulations using the TIGRESS framework. Explicit modeling of the int…
