We consider an initial-boundary value problem for $\partial_tu-\partial_t^{-α}\nabla^2u=f(t)$, that is, for a fractional diffusion ($-1<α<0$) or wave ($0<α<1$) equation. A numerical solution is found by applying a piecewise-linear, discontinuous Galerkin method in time combined with a piecewise-linear, conforming finite element method in space. The time mesh is graded appropriately near $t=0$, but the spatial mesh is quasiuniform. Previously, we proved that the error, measured in the spatial $L_2$-norm, is of order $k^{2+α_-}+h^2\ell(k)$, uniformly in $t$, where $k$ is the maximum time step, $h$ is the maximum diameter of the spatial finite elements, $α_-=\min(α,0)\le0$ and $\ell(k)=\max(1,|\log k|)$. Here, we generalize a known result for the classical heat equation (i.e., the case $α=0$) by showing that at each time level $t_n$ the solution is superconvergent with respect to $k$: the error is of order $(k^{3+2α_-}+h^2)\ell(k)$. Moreover, a simple postprocessing step employing Lagrange interpolation yields a superconvergent approximation for any $t$. Numerical experiments indicate that our theoretical error bound is pessimistic if $α<0$. Ignoring logarithmic factors, we observe that the error in the DG solution at $t=t_n$, and after postprocessing at all $t$, is of order $k^{3+α_-}+h^2$.
Existing a priori convergence results of the discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method to solve the problem of linear elasticity are improved. Using duality arguments, we show that higher convergence rates for the displacement can be obtained. Post-processing techniques are introduced in order to prove superconvergence and numerical experiments {\color{black} confirm} our theory.
This paper investigates superconvergence properties of the local discontinuous Galerkin methods with generalized alternating fluxes for one-dimensional linear convection-diffusion equations. By the technique of constructing some special correction functions, we prove the $(2k+1)$th order superconvergence for the cell averages, and the numerical traces in the discrete $L^2$ norm. In addition, superconvergence of order $k+2$ and $k+1$ are obtained for the error and its derivative at generalized Radau points. All theoretical findings are confirmed by numerical experiments.
In this paper, we present a unified analysis of the superconvergence property for a large class of mixed discontinuous Galerkin methods. This analysis applies to both the Poisson equation and linear elasticity problems with symmetric stress formulations. Based on this result, some locally postprocess schemes are employed to improve the accuracy of displacement by order min(k+1, 2) if polynomials of degree k are employed for displacement. Some numerical experiments are carried out to validate the theoretical results.
This paper is concerned with superconvergence properties of the direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) method for two-dimensional nonlinear convection-diffusion equations. By using the idea of correction function, we prove that, for any piecewise tensor-product polynomials of degree $k\geq 2$, the DDG solution is superconvergent at nodes and Lobatto points, with an order of ${\cal O}(h^{2k})$ and ${\cal O}(h^{k+2})$, respectively. Moreover, superconvergence properties for the derivative approximation are also studied and the superconvergence points are identified at Gauss points, with an order of…
We study the order of convergence of Galerkin variational integrators for ordinary differential equations. Galerkin variational integrators approximate a variational (Lagrangian) problem by restricting the space of curves to the set of polynomials of degree at most $s$ and approximating the action integral using a quadrature rule. We show that, if the quadrature rule is sufficiently accurate, the order of the integrators thus obtained is $2s$.
The conforming finite element Galerkin method is applied to discretise in the spatial direction for a class of strongly nonlinear parabolic problems. Using elliptic projection of the associated linearised stationary problem with Gronwall type result, optimal error estimates are derived, when piecewise polynomials of degree $r\geq 1$ are used, which improve upon earlier results of Axelsson [Numer. Math. 28 (1977), pp. 1-14] requiring for 2d $r\geq 2$ and for 3d $r\geq 3.$ Based on quasi-projection technique introduced by Douglas {\it et al.} [Math. Comp.32 (1978),pp. 345-362], superconvergence …

Superconvergence of the local discontinuous Galerkin method with generalized numerical fluxes for one-dimensional linear time-dependent fourth-order equations
This paper considers the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving the Vlasov-Maxwell (VM) system, a fundamental model for collisionless magnetized plasma. The DG methods provide accurate numerical description with conservation and stability properties. However, to resolve the high dimensional probability distribution function, the computational cost is the main bottleneck even for modern-day supercomputers. This work studies the applicability of a post-processing technique to the DG solution to enhance its accuracy and resolution for the VM system. In particular, we prove the superconve…
In this paper, we use Fourier analysis to study the superconvergence of the semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin method for scalar linear advection equations in one spatial dimension. The error bounds and asymptotic errors are derived for initial discretization by $L_2$ projection, Gauss-Radau projection, and other projections proposed by Cao et. al. For pedagogical purpose, the errors are computed in two different ways. In the first approach, we compute the difference between the numerical solution and a special interpolation of the exact solution, and show that it consists of an asymptotic e…
In this paper, a new $C^1$-conforming Petrov-Galerkin method for convection-diffusion equations is designed and analyzed. The trail space of the proposed method is a $C^1$-conforming ${\mathbb Q}_k$ (i.e., tensor product of polynomials of degree at most $k$) finite element space while the test space is taken as the $L^2$ (discontinuous) piecewise ${\mathbb Q}_{k-2}$ polynomial space. Existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is proved and optimal error estimates in all $L^2, H^1, H^2$-norms are established. In addition, superconvergence properties of the new method are investigated an…
In this paper, we present and study $C^1$ Petrov-Galerkin and Gauss collocation methods with arbitrary polynomial degree $k$ ($\ge 3$) for one-dimensional elliptic equations. We prove that, the solution and its derivative approximations converge with rate $2k-2$ at all grid points; and the solution approximation is superconvergent at all interior roots of a special Jacobi polynomial of degree $k+1$ in each element, the first-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at all interior $k-2$ Lobatto points, and the second-order derivative approximation is superconvergent at $k-1$ Gauss poi…
In this paper, we propose a new stabilizer free and pressure robust WG method for the Stokes equations with super-convergence on polytopal mesh in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. Convergence rates with one order higher than the optimal-order for velocity in both energy-norm and the $L^2$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm are proved in our proposed scheme. The $H$(div)-preserving operator has been constructed based on the polygonal mesh for arbitrary polynomial degrees and employed in the body source assembling to break the locking phenomenon induced by poor mass conservation in th…
We present a class of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin methods for the incompressible flow with moving boundaries and interfaces including two-phase flow with surface tension.
We propose efficient and parallel algorithms for the implementation of the high-order continuous time Galerkin method for dissipative and wave propagation problems. By using Legendre polynomials as shape functions, we obtain a special structure of the stiffness matrix which allows us to extend the diagonal Padé approximation to solve ordinary differential equations with source terms. The unconditional stability, $hp$ error estimates, and $hp$ superconvergence at the nodes of the continuous time Galerkin method are proved. Numerical examples confirm our theoretical results.
A new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin finite element (HMDGFE) method is constructed for incompressible miscible displacement problem. In this method, the hybrid mixed finite element (HMFE) procedure is considered to solve pressure and velocity equations, and a new hybrid mixed discontinuous Galerkin procedure is constructed to solve the concentration equation with upwind technique. Compared with other traditional discontinuous Galerkin methods, the new method can reach global systems with less unknowns and sparser stencils. The consistency and conservation of the method are analyzed, the s…
A discontinuous Galerkin pressure correction numerical method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is formulated and analyzed. We prove unconditional stability of the propose scheme. Convergence of the discrete velocity is established by deriving a priori error estimates. Numerical results verify the convergence rates.
The discontinuous Galerkin dG method provides a robust and flexible technique for the time integration of fractional diffusion problems. However, a practical implementation uses coefficients defined by integrals that are not easily evaluated. We describe specialised quadrature techniques that efficiently maintain the overall accuracy of the dG method. In addition, we observe in numerical experiments that known superconvergence properties of dG time stepping for classical diffusion problems carry over in a modified form to the fractional-order setting.
In this paper, discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods are applied to one dimensional Rosenau equation. Theoretical results including consistency, a priori bounds and optimal error estimates are established for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. The decay estimates are verified numerically for the Rosenau equation.
In this paper we propose a novel regularization strategy for the local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the context of level-set reinitialization. The novel regularization idea works in analogy to shock-capturing schemes for discontinuous Galerkin methods, which are based on finite volume sub-cells. In this spirit, the local discontinuous Galerkin method is combined with an upwind/downwind finite volume sub-cell discretization, which is applied in areas of low regularity. To ensure the applicability on unstructured meshes, the finite volume discretization …
We present a geometric multigrid solver for the Compact Discontinuous Galerkin method through building a hierarchy of coarser meshes using a simple agglomeration method which handles arbitrary element shapes and dimensions. The method is easily extendable to other discontinuous Galerkin discretizations, including the Local DG method and the Interior Penalty method. We demonstrate excellent solver performance for Poisson's equation, provided a flux formulation is used for the operator coarsening and a suitable switch function chosen for the numerical fluxes.
In this paper, we provide a framework of designing the local discontinuous Galerkin scheme for integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$ with $s\in(0,1)$ in two dimensions. We theoretically prove and numerically verify the numerical stability and convergence of the scheme with the convergence rate no worse than $\mathcal{O}(h^{k+\frac{1}{2}})$.
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.
The pressure correction scheme is combined with interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Optimal error estimates are derived for the velocity in the L$^2$ norm in time and in space. Error bounds for the discrete time derivative of the velocity and for the pressure are also established.
The hybrid Raviart-Thomas mixed discontinuous Galerkin (HRTMDG) method is proposed for solving the Helmholtz equation. With a new energy norm, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the HRTMDG method, and give its convergence analysis. The corresponding error estimate shows that the HRTMDG method has an optimal $L^2$-norm convergence accuracy which is independent of wavenumber.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
We generalize the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method proposed in [SIAM J. Num. Anal., 53(6):2705-2726, 2015.] to second-order semilinear wave equations. A stability and convergence analysis is presented along with numerical experiments demonstrating optimal convergence for certain choices of the interelement fluxes. Applications to the sine-Gordon equation include simulations of breathers, kink, and anti-kink solitons.
For the stationary advection-diffusion problem the standard continuous Galerkin method is unstable without some additional control on the mesh or method. The interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method is stable but at the expense of an increased number of degrees of freedom. The hybrid method proposed in [5] combines the computational complexity of the continuous method with the stability of the discontinuous method without a significant increase in degrees of freedom. We discuss the implementation of this method using the finite element library deal.ii and present some numerical experimen…
