In this paper, the system of particles coupled with fluid is considered. The particles are described by a Vlasov equation, and the fluid is governed by a forced Navier-Stokes equations. The interaction with fluid phase governed by Navier-Stokes equations is taken into account through a source term. The resulting system, namely Navier-Stokes-Vlasov equations, is shown to have global weak solutions in three spatial dimensions, and to have a unique global solution in two spatial dimensions.
The global well-posedness for the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov equations in two spatial dimensions is established by a priori estimates, the characteristic method and the semigroup analysis.
We introduce a framework to justify hydrodynamic limits of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system. We specifically study high friction regimes, which take into account the fact that particles of the dispersed phase are light (resp. small) compared to the fluid part, and lead to the derivation of Transport-Navier-Stokes (resp. Inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes) systems.
A fluid-particle model is investigated in the present paper, which consists of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Vlasov equation though a nonlinear drag force. We consider the initial value problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov system and establish the global existence and uniqueness of the weak solution for general initial data in either spatial periodic domain or spatial real line, which is shown to be a classical solution for regular initial data.
A fluid-particle system of the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations and Vlasov equation in the three dimensional space is considered in this paper. The coupling arises from the drag force in the fluid equations and the acceleration in the Vlasov equation. An initial-boundary value problem is studied in a bounded domain with large data. The existence of global weak solutions is established through an approximation scheme, energy estimates, and weak convergence.
A moderately thick spray can be described by a coupled system of equations consisting of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Boltzmann equation. We investigate this kind of mathematical model in this paper. In particular, we study the initial value problem for the Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Boltzmann equations. The existence of global weak solutions is established by a weak convergence method. The interesting point of our main result is to handle the model with some breakup effects while the velocity of particles is in the whole space.
We consider the compressible Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck-Navier-Stokes system in a three dimensional bounded domain with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The system describes the evolution of charged particles ensemble dispersed in an isentropic fluid. For the adiabatic coefficient $γ>3/2$, we establish the global existence of weak solutions to this system with arbitrary large initial and boundary data.
We prove a uniqueness result for weak solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in two dimensions, both in the whole space and in the periodic case, under a mild decay condition on the initial distribution function. The main result is achieved by combining methods from optimal transportation (introduced in this context by G. Loeper) with the use of Hardy's maximal function, in order to obtain some fine Wassestein-like estimates for the difference of two solutions of the Vlasov equation.
We study a hydrodynamic limit of a system of coupled kinetic and fluid equations under a strong local alignment force and a strong Brownian motion. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck type equation and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity. Based on a relative entropy argument, by assuming the existence of weak solutions to that kinetic-fluid system, we rigorously derive a two-phase fluid model consisting of isothermal Euler equations and compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a density-dependent viscosity.
We study the large time behavior of Fujita-Kato type solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system set on $\mathbb{T}^3 \times \mathbb{R}^3$. Under the assumption that the initial so-called modulated energy is small enough, we prove that the distribution function converges to a Dirac mass in velocity, with exponential rate. The proof is based on the fine structure of the system and on a bootstrap analysis allowing to get global bounds on moments.
We analyze the Vlasov equation coupled with the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and vacuum. These two equations are coupled through the drag force which depends on the fluid density and the relative velocity between particle and fluid. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of local-in-time regular solutions with arbitrarily large initial data and a vacuum. We then present sufficient conditions on the initial data leading to the finite-time blowup of regular solutions. In particular, our study makes the result on the finite-time singularity formation …
The local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for Cauchy problem of three-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes-Vlasov equations
This paper deals with the finite-time blow-up phenomena of classical solutions for Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations under suitable assumptions on the initial configurations. We show that a solution to the coupled kinetic-fluid system may be initially smooth, however, it can become singular in a finite period of time. We provide a simple idea of showing the finite time blow up of classical solutions to the coupled system which has not been studied so far. We also obtain analogous results for related systems, such as isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, two-phase fluid equations consis…
We establish the large-time behavior for the coupled kinetic-fluid equations. More precisely, we consider the Vlasov equation coupled to the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations through a drag forcing term. For this system, the large-time behavior shows the exponential alignment between particles and fluid velocities as time evolves. This improves the previous result by Bae-Choi-Ha-Kang[Disc. Cont. Dyn. Sys. A, 34, (2014), 4419--4458] in which they considered the Vlasov/Navier-Stokes equations with nonlocal velocity alignment forces for particles. Employing a new Lyapunov functional…
In this paper, we study the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in a 2D pipe with partially absorbing boundary conditions. We show the existence of stationary states for this system near small Poiseuille flows for the fluid phase, for which the kinetic phase is not trivial. We prove the asymptotic stability of these states with respect to appropriately compactly supported perturbations. The analysis relies on geometric control conditions which help to avoid any concentration phenomenon for the kinetic phase.
For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random i…
We study the large time behavior of small data solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system on $\R^3 \times \R^3$. We prove that the kinetic distribution function concentrates in velocity to a Dirac mass supported at $0$, while the fluid velocity homogenizes to $0$, both at a polynomial rate. The proof is based on two steps, following the general strategy laid out in \cite{HKMM}: (1) the energy of the system decays with polynomial rate, assuming a uniform control of the kinetic density, (2) a bootstrap argument allows to obtain such a control. This last step requires a fine understanding of th…
In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.
We prove a null controllability result for the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system, which describes the interaction of a large cloud of particles immersed in a fluid. We show that one can modify both the distribution of particles and the velocity field of the fluid from any initial state to the zero steady state, by means of an internal control. Indeed, we can modify the non-linear dynamics of the system in order to absorb the particles and let the fluid at rest. The proof is achieved thanks to the return method and a Leray-Schauder fixed-point argument.
For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.
Our work deals with the systematic study of the coupling between the nonlocal Stokes system and the Vlasov equation. The coupling is due to a drag force generated by the fluid-particles interaction. We establish the existence of global weak solutions for the nonlocal Stokes-Vlasov system in dimensions two and three without resorting to assumptions on higher-order velocity moments of the initial distribution of particles. We then study by the means of the sigma-convergence method, the asymptotic behavior in the general deterministic framework, of the sequence of solutions to the nonlocal Stokes…
This work concerns the global existence of the weak solutions to a system of partial differential equations modeling the evolution of particles in the fluid. That system is given by a coupling between the standard isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the macroscopic description of a gas fluid flow, and a Vlasov-Boltzmann type equation governing the evolution of spray droplets modeled as particles with varying radius. We establish the existence of global weak solutions with finite energy, whose density of gas satisfies the renormalized mass equation. The proof, is partially motiv…
We prove a global-in-time limit from the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system with Ohm's law. Besides the techniques developed for the classical solutions to the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann equations in the past years, such as the nonlinear energy method and micro-macro decomposition are employed, key roles are played by the decay properties of both the electric field and the wave equation with linear damping of the divergence free magnetic field. This is a companion paper of [N. Jiang and Y.-L. Luo, \emph{Ann. PDE} 8 (20…
This article proposes a derivation of the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system for spray/aerosol flows. The distribution function of the dispersed phase is governed by a Vlasov-equation, while the velocity field of the propellant satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids. The dynamics of the dispersed phase and of the propellant are coupled through the drag force exerted by the propellant on the dispersed phase. We present a formal derivation of this model from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary gaseous mixture, involving the droplets/dust particles in the dispersed phase …
In this paper we prove an exact controllability result for the Vlasov-Stokes system in the two-dimensional torus with small data by means of an internal control. We show that one can steer, in arbitrarily small time, any initial datum of class C 1 satisfying a smallness condition in certain weighted spaces to any final state satisfying the same conditions. The proof of the main result is achieved thanks to the return method and a Leray-Schauder fixed-point argument.
We study the large time behavior of small data solutions to the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system set on $Ω\times \mathbb{R}^3$, for a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^3$, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the fluid and absorption boundary condition for the kinetic phase. We prove that the fluid velocity homogenizes to $0$ while the distribution function concentrates towards a Dirac mass in velocity centered at $0$, with an exponential rate. The proof, which follows the methods introduced in [Han-Kwan - Moussa - Moyano, arXiv:1902.03864v2], requires a careful analysis of the …
We study an asymptotic analysis of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we deal with the nonlinear Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation coupled with the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes system through a drag force in a bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for the kinetic equation and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the fluid system. We establish a rigorous hydrodynamic limit corresponding to strong noise and local alignment force. The limiting system is a type of two-phase fluid model consisting of the isothermal Euler system and…
We study the Vlasov-Stokes equations which macroscopically model the sedimentation of a cloud of particles in a fluid, where particle inertia are taken into account but fluid inertia are assumed to be negligible. We consider the limit when the inertia of the particles tends to zero, and obtain convergence of the dynamics to the solution of an associated inertialess system of equations. This system coincides with the model that can be derived as the homogenization limit of the microscopic inertialess dynamics.

In this short paper, we formally derive the thin spray equation for a steady Stokes gas, i.e. the equation consists in a coupling between a kinetic (Vlasov type) equation for the dispersed phase and a (steady) Stokes equation for the gas. Our starting point is a system of Boltzmann equations for a binary gas mixture. The derivation follows the procedure already outlined in [Bernard-Desvillettes-Golse-Ricci, arXiv:1608.00422 [math.AP]] where the evolution of the gas is governed by the Navier-Stokes equation.
This paper is concerned with a kineitc-fluid model with random initial inputs in the fine particle regime, which is a system coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations that model dispersed particles of different sizes. A uniform regularity for random initial data near the global equilibrium is established in some suitable Sobolev spaces by using energy estimates, and we also prove the energy decays exponentially in time by hypocoercivity arguments, which means that the long time behavior of the solution is insensitive to the random perturbation i…
Convergence of a system of particles, interacting with a fluid, to Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system is studied. The interaction between particles and fluid is described by Stokes drag force. The empirical measure of particles is proved to converge to the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck component of the system and the velocity of the fluid coupled with the particles converges in the uniform topology to the the Navier-Stokes component. A new uniqueness result for the PDE system is added.
We show that the Navier-Stokes as well as a random perturbation of this equation can be derived from a stochastic variational principle where the pressure is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. Moreover we describe how to obtain corresponding constants of the motion.
The incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system limits of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for soft potentials: the noncutoff cases and cutoff cases
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.

We study Caccioppoli's inequalities of the non-stationary Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Our analysis is local near boundary and we prove that, in contrast to the interior case, the Caccioppoli's inequalities of the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, in general, fail near boundary.
This paper studies two well-known models for two-phase fluid flow at constant temperature, the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn and the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, both of which consist of equations for the (total) fluid density rho, the (mass-averaged)velocity u and the concentration (of one of the phases,) c. Assuming in either case that both phases are incompressible with different densities, each of the models is shown to reduce to a system of evolution equations in rho and u alone. In the case of the Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn model, this reduced system is the class…
A kinetic-fluid model describing the evolutions of disperse two-phase flows is considered. The model consists of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation for the particles (disperse phase) coupled with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid (fluid phase) through the friction force. The friction force depends on the density, which is different from many previous studies on kinetic-fluid models and is more physical in modeling but significantly more difficult in analysis. New approach and techniques are introduced to deal with the strong coupling of the fluid and the particles. The glob…
An algebraic upper bound for the decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Navier-Stokes-Coriolis equations in the critical space $\dot{H} ^{\frac{1}{2}} (\mathbb{R} ^3)$ is derived using the Fourier Splitting Method. Estimates are framed in terms of the decay character of initial data, leading to solutions with algebraic decay and showing in detail the roles played by the linear and nonlinear parts.
For the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system with the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations to the global Maxwellians formally converge to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell (NSFM) system with Ohm's law, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to Knudsen number $\eps$ for the fluctuations. As consequences, the existence of the global in time classical solutions of VMB with all $\eps \in (0,1]$ is established. Furthermore, the convergence of the fluctuations of the solutions of VMB to the classical solutions of NSFM with Ohm's law is rigoro…
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we shall establish the global well-posedness, the space-time analyticity of the Navier-Stokes equations for a class of large periodic data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. This improves the classical result of Koch \& Tataru \cite{koch-tataru}, for the global well-posedness with small initial data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
We study the stationary Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations with non-homogeneous Navier boundary condition in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{3}$ of class $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$. We prove existence, uniqueness of weak and strong solutions in $\mathbf{W}^{1,p}(Ω)$ and $\mathbf{W}^{2,p}(Ω)$ for all $1<p<\infty$ considering minimal regularity on the friction coefficient $α$. Moreover, we deduce uniform estimates on the solution with respect to $α$ which enables us to analyze the behavior of the solution when $α\rightarrow \infty$.
In this paper we prove a global well-posedness result for tridimensional Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system with axisymmetric initial data. This system couples Navier-Stokes equations with a transport equation governing the density.
