The magnetic behavior of single-crystalline CeCuGa3 has been investigated. The compound forms in a tetragonal BaAl4-type structure consisting of rare-earth planes separated by Cu-Ga layers. If the Cu-Ga site disorder is reduced, CeCuGa3 adopts the related, likewise tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure, in which the Ce ion are surrounded by different Cu and Ga layers and the inversion symmetry is lost. In the literature conflicting reports about the magnetic order of CeCuGa3 have been published. Single crystals with the centrosymmetric structure variant exhibit ferromagnetic order below approx. 4 K with a strong planar anisotropy. The magnetic behavior above the transition temperature can be well understood by the crystal-field splitting of the 4f Hund's rule ground-state multiplet of the Ce ions.

Magnetically Robust Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Heavy Fermion Systems with f^2-Configuration: Competition between Crystalline-Electric-Field and Kondo-Yosida Singlets
Knowledge of magnetic symmetry is vital for exploiting nontrivial surface states of magnetic topological materials. EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an excellent example, as it is predicted to have collinear antiferromagnetic order where the magnetic moment direction determines either a topological-crystalline-insulator phase supporting axion electrodynamics or a higher-order-topological-insulator phase with chiral hinge states. Here, we use neutron diffraction, symmetry analysis, and density functional theory results to demonstrate that EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ actually exhibits low-symmetry helical antiferro…
Structural, magnetic and dielectric properties have been studied for Yb$_2$CoMnO$_6$. Nano-crystalline sample of Yb$_2$CoMnO$_6$ synthesized by sol-gel method and structural analysis shows that the sample crystallizes in monoclinic crystal structure with \textit{P2$_1$/n} phase group. To understand the charge state of Co, Mn and Yb we have performed the XPS study. Magnetic study shows that the sample undergoes a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition around $T_c$ $\sim$56 K and an additional magnetic ordering at a lower temperature around 14 K due to ordering of Yb$^{3+}$ magnetic ions…
Structural, magnetization, phonon behavior, and dielectric response of nano-crystalline Gd$_2$CoMnO$_6$ have been presented in this paper. The study shows that the material crystallizes in $\textit{P2$_1$/n}$ phase group of the monoclinic crystal structure. XPS measurement shows Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ oxidation states are present in the sample. Magnetization study reveals that the sample undergoes a ferromagnetic ordering of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ magnetic ions around $T_c$ $\sim$132 K. However we have seen that with the application of external magnetic field the phase transition is largely …
CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ is an unusual example of a stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet, which can be cleanly tuned by hydrostatic pressure to a quantum critical point. In order to understand the origin of this anomalous behavior, we have characterized the magnetic ordering and crystalline electric field (CEF) scheme of this system. While magnetic Bragg peaks are not resolved in neutron powder diffraction, coherent oscillations are observed in zero-field $μ$SR below $T_{\rm C}$, which are consistent with in-plane ferromagnetic ordering consisting of reduced Ce moments. From analyzing the magnetic s…
Recently H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ has been reported as a spin-orbital entangled quantum spin liquid (QSL) [K. Kitagawa et al., Nature {\bf 554}, 341 (2018)], albeit its connection to Kitaev QSL has not been yet identified. To unveil the related Kitaev physics, we perform the first Raman spectroscopy studies on single crystalline H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ samples. We implement a soft chemical replacement of Li$^+$ with H$^+$ from $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ single crystals to synthesize the single crystal samples of the iridate second generation H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. The Raman spectroscopy can be used to diagnose the Q…
CeCd$_3$P$_3$ and CeCd$_3$As$_3$ compounds adopt the hexagonal ScAl$_3$C$_3$-type structure, where magnetic Ce ions on a triangular lattice order antiferromagnetically below $T_\text{N} \sim$0.42~K. Their crystalline electric field (CEF) level scheme has been determined by fitting magnetic susceptibility curves, magnetization isotherms, and Schottky anomalies in specific heat. The calculated results, incorporating the CEF excitation, Zeeman splitting, and molecular field, are in good agreement with the experimental data. The CEF model, with Ce$^{3+}$ ions in a trigonal symmetry, explains the s…
Magnetic Field Effect on Crossover Temperature from Non-Fermi Liquid to Fermi Liquid Behavior in f^2-Impurity Systems with Crystalline-Electric-Field Singlet State Competing with Kondo-Yosida Singlet State
To understand the nature of magnetic phase transition in nano-crystalline Pr$_2$CoMnO$_6$, in present study we have investigated the critical behavior and magnetocaloric effect. To estimate the critical exponents, various methods have been adopted like; the modified Arrott plots (MAP), the Kouvel-Fisher method (KF) and the critical isotherm analysis. This material shows a second order type a paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition around 160 K. The critical exponents obtained from modified Arrott plots are $β$ = 0.531, $γ$ = 0.935 and $T_c$ = 160 K. Kouvel-Fisher method gives …
We report temperature dependent magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements on the corundum related magnetoelectric antiferromagnet Mn$_{4}$Ta$_{2}$O$_{9}$. Measurements performed on a single crystalline specimen reveal that the magnetization is anisotropic, and a weak ferromagnetic component emerges well within the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Powder neutron diffraction measurements indicate that the magnetic structure comprises of antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic chains of Mn$^{2+}$ spins aligned along the trigonal $c$ axis, in contrast to that reported in other iso…
Neutron scattering experiments have been performed to elucidate magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au$_{70}$Si$_{17}$Tb$_{13}$, consisting of icosahedral spin clusters in a body-centered-cubic lattice. Bulk magnetic measurements performed on the single crystalline sample unambiguously confirm long-range ordering at $T_{\rm C} = 11.6 \pm 1$ K. In contrast to the simple ferromagnetic response in the bulk measurements, single crystal neutron diffraction confirms a formation of intriguing non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic order. The magnetic moment direction was found to be …
Two-dimensional magnetic materials (2DMM) are significant for studies on the nature of 2D long range magnetic order but also for future spintronic devices. Of particular interest are 2DMM where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ on the length scale below 0.6 nm induces substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic abo…

We investigate the crystal structure, magnetic properties, and crystalline-electric field of tetragonal, $I4_1/amd$, NaCeO$_2$. In this compound, Ce$^{3+}$ ions form a tetragonally elongated diamond lattice coupled by antiferromagnetic interactions ($Θ_{CW} = -7.69$ K) that magnetically order below $T_N = 3.18$ K. The Ce$^{3+}$ $J = 5/2$ crystalline-electric field-split multiplet is studied via inelastic neutron scattering to parameterize a $J_{eff} = 1/2$ ground state doublet comprised of states possessing mixed $|m_z \rangle$ character. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal the onset of $A$…
We have performed X-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic series of compounds CeCuBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure with space group $P4/nmm$ and present antiferromagnetic transition temperatures ranging from 3.6 K to 16 K. Remarkably, the magnetization easy axis changes along the series, which is closely related to the variations of the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF) parameters. This evolution was analyze…
A novel property of the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ is revealed theoretically. By analyzing the crystalline electronic field (CEF) on the basis of the hybridization picture, odd parity CEF is shown to exist because of sevenfold configuration of B atoms around Yb, which breaks the local inversion symmetry. This allows onsite admixture of 4f and 5d wavefunctions with a pure imaginary coefficient, giving rise to the magnetic toroidal (MT) degree of freedom. By constructing a realistic minimal model for $β$-YbAlB$_4$, we show that onsite 4f-5d Coulomb repulsion driv…
