Knowledge of magnetic symmetry is vital for exploiting nontrivial surface states of magnetic topological materials. EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an excellent example, as it is predicted to have collinear antiferromagnetic order where the magnetic moment direction determines either a topological-crystalline-insulator phase supporting axion electrodynamics or a higher-order-topological-insulator phase with chiral hinge states. Here, we use neutron diffraction, symmetry analysis, and density functional theory results to demonstrate that EuIn$_{2}$As$_{2}$ actually exhibits low-symmetry helical antiferromagnetic order which makes it a stoichiometric magnetic topological-crystalline axion insulator protected by the combination of a 180$^{\circ}$ rotation and time-reversal symmetries: $C_{2}\times\mathcal{T}=2^{\prime}$. Surfaces protected by $2^{\prime}$ are expected to have an exotic gapless Dirac cone which is unpinned to specific crystal momenta. All other surfaces have gapped Dirac cones and exhibit half-integer quantum anomalous Hall conductivity. We predict that the direction of a modest applied magnetic field of $H\approx1$ to $2$ T can tune between gapless and gapped surface states.
The two degenerate ground states of the anisotropic Heisenberg (XY) spin model of a chain of qubits (pseudo-spins) can encode quantum information, but their degree of protection against local perturbations is known to be only partial. We examine the properties of the system in the presence of non-local spin-spin interactions, possibly emerging from the quantum electrodynamics of the device. We find a phase distinct from the XY phase admitting two ground states which are highly protected against all local field perturbations, persisting across a range of parameters. In the context of the XY cha…
We discuss physical constructions, and the boundary properties of various symmetry protected topological phases that involve 1-form symmetries, from one spatial dimension (1d) to four spatial dimensions (4d). For example, the prototype 3d boundary state of 4d SPT states involving 1-form symmetries can be either a gapless photon phase (quantum electrodynamics) or gapped topological order enriched by 1-form symmetries, namely the loop excitations of these topological orders carry nontrivial 1-form symmetry charges. This study also serves the purpose of diagnosing anomaly of 3d states of matter. …
We identify field theories that describe the surfaces of three-dimensional bosonic point group symmetry protected topological (pgSPT) phases. The anomalous nature of the surface field theories is revealed via a dimensional reduction argument. Specifically, we study three different surface field theories. The first field theory is quantum electrodynamics in three space-time dimensions (QED3) with four flavors of fermions. We show this theory can describe the surfaces of a majority of bosonic pgSPT phases protected by a single mirror reflection, or by $C_{nv}$ point group symmetry for $n=2,3,4,6…
We start by describing a symmetry enforced nodal line semi-metal (NLSM) in the 2D flat form of honeycomb Group - V and its non trivial thermo-electric response. We will then proceed to show that, upon buckling, the system undergoes its dirac-merging phase transitions. Further buckling leads to these unpinned Dirac cones annihilating in pairs at two distinct critical angle leading to a second topological phase transition to an insulating state. We then show that this seemingly innocuous insulating state is indeed a weak topological crystalline insulator. Furthermore, upon closer look, this insu…
Inspired by the recent developments of constructing novel Dirac liquid boundary states of the $3d$ topological insulator, we propose one possible $2d$ boundary state of the $3d$ bosonic symmetry protected topological state with $U(1)_e \rtimes Z_2^T \times U(1)_s $ symmetry. This boundary theory is described by a $(2+1)d$ quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with two flavors of Dirac fermions ($N_f = 2$) coupled with a noncompact U(1) gauge field: $ \mathcal{L} = \sum_{j = 1}^2 \barψ_j γ_μ(\partial_μ- i a_μ) ψ_j - i A^{s}_μ\bar{ψ_i} γ_μτ^z_{ij} ψ_j + \frac{i}{2π} ε_{μνρ} a_μ\partial_νA^{e}_ρ$, wh…
The interplay of symmetry, topology, and many-body effects in the classification of possible phases of matter poses a formidable challenge that is attracting great attention in condensed-matter physics. Such many-body effects are typically induced by inter-particle interactions involving an action at a distance, such as the Coulomb interaction between electrons in a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. In this work, we show that similar phenomena also appear in high-energy physics, where inter-particle interactions are mediated by gauge bosons, and constrained by a local gauge symmetry.…
A Dirac fermion emerges as a result of interplay between symmetry and topology in condensed matter. Current research moves towards investigating the Dirac fermions in the presence of manybody effects in correlated system. Here, we demonstrate the emergence of correlation-induced symmetry-protected Dirac semimetal state in the lightly-doped spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry stabilizes a Dirac line-node semimetal and that the correlation-induced symmetry-breaking electronic order further leads to a phase transition from the Dirac…
We first propose a topological term that captures the "intertwinement" between the standard "$\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$" antiferromagnetic order (or the so-called 120$^\circ$ state) and the "$\sqrt{12}\times \sqrt{12}$" valence solid bond (VBS) order for spin-1/2 systems on a triangular lattice. Then using a controlled renormalization group calculation, we demonstrate that there exists an unfine-tuned direct continuous deconfined quantum critical point (dQCP) between the two ordered phases mentioned above. This dQCP is described by the $N_f = 4$ quantum electrodynamics (QED) with an emergent P…
The bosonic topological transition (BTT) is a quantum critical point between the bosonic symmetry protected topological phase and the trivial phase. In this work, we derive a description of this transition in terms of compact quantum electrodynamics (QED) with four fermion flavors ($N_f=4$). This allows us to describe the transition in a lattice model with the maximal microscopic symmetry: an internal SO(4) symmetry. Within a systematic renormalization group analysis, we identify the critical point with the desired O(4) emergent symmetry and all expected deformations. By lowering the microscop…
The electromagnetic response of topological insulators is governed by axion electrodynamics, which features a topological magnetoelectric term in the Maxwell equations. As a consequence magnetic fields become the source of electric fields and vice-versa, a phenomenon that is general for any material exhibiting a linear magnetoelectric effect. Axion electrodynamics has been associated with the possibility to create magnetic monopoles, in particular by an electrical charge that is screened above the surface of a magnetoelectric material. Here we explicitly solve for the electromagnetic fields in…

The interplay of symmetry and topology has been at the forefront of recent progress in quantum matter. Here we uncover an unexpected connection between band topology and the description of competing orders in a quantum magnet. Specifically we show that aspects of band topology protected by crystalline symmetries determine key properties of the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which can be defined on the honeycomb, square, triangular and kagomé lattices. At low energies, the DSL on all these lattices is described by an emergent Quantum Electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with $N_f=4$ flavors of Dirac fermions cou…
The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI, protected by a combination symmetry ) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel physics such as quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) within the AFM state, violating the definition of the AFM TI, as the surfaces being studied should be -breaking …
Recently significant progress has been made in $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theories without supersymmetry. In particular, it was realized that different Lagrangians may be related by hidden dualities, i.e., seemingly different field theories may actually be identical in the infrared limit. Among all the proposed dualities, one has attracted particular interest in the field of strongly-correlated quantum-matter systems: the one relating the easy-plane noncompact CP$^1$ model (NCCP$^1$) and noncompact quantum electrodynamics (QED) with two flavors ($N = 2$) of massless two-component Dira…
Skyrmions are topologically protected, two-dimensional, localized hedgehogs and whorls of spin. Originally invented as a concept in field theory for nuclear interactions, skyrmions are central to a wide range of phenomena in condensed matter. Their realization at room temperature (RT) in magnetic multilayers has generated considerable interest, fueled by technological prospects and the access granted to fundamental questions. The interaction of skyrmions with charge carriers gives rise to exotic electrodynamics, such as the topological Hall effect (THE), the Hall response to an emergent magnet…
