We use small angle neutron scattering to study the superconducting vortex lattice in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ as a function of doping and magnetic field. We show that near optimally doping the vortex lattice coordination and the superconducting coherence length $ξ$ are controlled by a van-Hove singularity crossing the Fermi level near the Brillouin zone boundary. The vortex lattice properties change dramatically as a spin-density-wave instability is approached upon underdoping. The Bragg glass paradigm provides a good description of this regime and suggests that SDW order acts as a novel source of disorder on the vortex lattice.
When studied by small-angle neutron scattering the vortex lattice (VL) in UPt3 undergoes a gradual disordering as a function of time due to 235U fission. This temporarily heats regions of the sample above the critical temperature, where, upon re-cooling, the vortices remain in a quenched vortex glass state. The disordering rate is proportional to the magnetic field, suggesting that it is governed by collective VL properties such as the elastic moduli. An ordered VL can be re-formed by applying a small field oscillation, showing that the fission does not cause significant radiation damage to th…
Using numerical simulations of magnetically interacting vortices in disordered layered superconductors we obtain the static vortex phase diagram as a function of magnetic field and temperature. For increasing field or temperature, we find a transition from ordered straight vortices to disordered decoupled vortices. This transition is associated with a peak effect in the critical current. For samples with increasing disorder strength the field at which the decoupling occurs decreases. Long range, nonlinear interactions in the c-axis are required to observe the effect.
A highly degenerate family of states [proposed in PRB 63, 134503 (2001)] is proven to really minimize the Hamiltonian of the fully frustrated XY model on a dice lattice. The harmonic fluctuations are shown to be no consequence for the removal of the accidental degeneracy of these states, so a particular vortex pattern can be stabilized only by the anharmonic fluctuations. The structure of this pattern is found and the temperature of its disordering due to the proliferation of domain walls is estimated. The extreme smallness of the fluctuations induced free energy of domain walls leads to the a…
The vortex lattice in a Type II superconductor provides a versatile model system to investigate the order-disorder transition in a periodic medium in the presence of random pinning. Here, using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy in a weakly pinned Co0.0075NbSe2 single crystal, we show that at low temperatures, the vortex lattice in a 3-dimensional superconductor disorders in two steps across the peak effect. At the onset of the peak effect, the equilibrium Bragg glass transforms into an orientational glass through the proliferation of dislocations. At a higher field, the dislocations dissociate …
We examine the effects of the CuO chains on the density of states in the vortex phase in YBa_2Cu_3O_7, via a calculation based on the tight-binding proximity model. In this model, chain superconductivity results from single-electron hopping between the intrinsically-normal chains and intrinsically-superconducting CuO_2 planes. The calculations are based on self-consistent solutions of the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations for a bilayer consisting of a single CuO_2 layer and a single CuO chain layer. We find that, in addition to the dispersing resonances found in single-layer models, the chains in…
A scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscope (SSM) is used to study the magnetic imaging of dynamic motion of quantized interlayer vortices induced by the Lorentz force in anisotropic high-Tc La_(1.87)Sr_(0.13)CuO_4 single crystals. It is found that 3 modes of flux motion switch depending on the transport current. By increasing the current a transition from the creep-like behavior of vortices to a steady flow of vortices was observed. Even higher current induced a continuous expansion of vortex-flow area indicating an inhomogeneous distribution of various pinning c…
By means of local Hall probe ac and dc permeability measurements we investigated the phase diagram of vortex matter for the HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ superconductor in the regime near the critical temperature. The second peak line, $H_{\rm sp}$, in contrast to what is usually assumed, doesn't terminate at the critical temperature. Our local ac permeability measurements revealed pronounced hysteretic behavior and thermomagnetic history effects near the onset of the second peak, giving evidence for a phase transition of vortex matter from an ordered qausilattice state to a disordered glass.
Magnetization measurements in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} crystals indicate vortex order-disorder transition manifested by a sharp kink in the second magnetization peak. The transition field exhibits unique temperature dependence, namely a strong decrease with temperature in the entire measured range. This behavior rules out the conventional interpretation of a disorder-driven transition into an entangled vortex solid phase. It is shown that the transition in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} is driven by both thermally- and disorder-induced fluctuations, resulting in a pinned liquid state. We conclude that vortex so…
The magnetic phase diagram of slightly overdoped La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4} (x=0.17) is characterised by a field-induced hexagonal to square transition of the vortex lattice at low fields (~0.4 Tesla) [R. Gilardi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 217003 (2002)]. Here we report on a small angle neutron scattering study of the vortex lattice at higher fields, that reveals no further change of the coordination of the square vortex lattice up to 10.5 Tesla applied perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. Moreover, it is found that the diffraction signal disappears at temperatures well below Tc, due to the melting of …
We report here on the first direct observations of the vortex lattice in the bulk of electron-doped Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals. Using small angle neutron scattering, we have observed a square vortex lattice with the nearest-neighbors oriented at 45$^{\circ}$ from the Cu-O bond direction, which is consistent with theories based on the d-wave superconducting gap. However, the square symmetry persists down to unusually low magnetic fields. Moreover, the diffracted intensity from the vortex lattice is found to decrease rapidly with increasing magnetic field.
Magnetization and ac-susceptibility measurements are used to characterize the mixed phase of the high-temperature cuprate superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ over a large range of doping (0.075 $\leq x\leq$ 0.20). The first order vortex lattice phase transition line $H_{FOT}(T)$, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ and the second peak $H_{sp}(T)$ have been investigated up to high magnetic fields (8 Tesla applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes). Our results reveal a strong doping dependence of the magnetic phase diagram, which can mainly be explained by the increasing anisotropy wi…
We present measurements of the fluctuation superconductivity in an underdoped thin film of La$_{1.905}$Sr$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ using time-domain THz spectroscopy. We compare our results with measurements of diamagnetism in a similarly doped crystal of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. We show through a vortex-plasma model that if the fluctuation diamagnetism solely originates in vortices, then they must necessarily exhibit an anomalously large vortex diffusion constant, which is more than two orders of magnitude larger than the Bardeen-Stephen estimate. This points to either the extremely unusual propertie…
By numerically solving models with competing superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, we study the magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in both the weak and strong field regimes. Through a omparison with the neutron scattering results of Kang et al and Matsuura et al.on $Nd_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4$, we conclude that this system is close to a SO(5) symmetric critical point. We also make a quantitative prediction on increasing the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ and the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by applying an in-plane magnetic field.
We present an extensive study of vortex dynamics in a high-quality single crystal of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201), a highly anisotropic superconductor that is a model system for studying the effects of anisotropy. From magnetization $M$ measurements over a wide range of temperatures $T$ and fields $H$, we construct a detailed vortex phase diagram. We find that the temperature-dependent vortex penetration field $H_p(T)$, second magnetization peak $H_{smp}(T)$, and irreversibility field $H_{irr}(T)$ all decay exponentially at low temperatures and exhibit an abrupt change in behavior at high temp…
We present resistivity data on a high-quality La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ film measured in a magnetic field of 1 T applied at an angle $δ$ to the c axis. Using these data, the influence of the orientation of the magnetic field and the effective mass anisotropy on the vortex-glass transition can be studied. The variation of $δ$ for a fixed magnitude of the magnetic field allows us to investigate the critical properties of interest, including the 2D-to-3D crossover and the 3D vortex glass-to-fluid transition, as the temperature is decreased. The data are well described by the scaling theory fo…
The temperature dependence of the nonlinear current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics in highly underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.07$ and 0.08) thick films has been studied in both zero and perpendicular magnetic fields $H$. Power-law behavior of $V(I)$ is found for both $H=0$ and $H \neq 0$. The critical current $I_{c}$ was extracted, and its temperature and magnetic field dependences were studied in detail. The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless physics dominates the nonlinear $I$-$V$ near the superconducting transition at $H=0$, and it continues to contribute up to a characteristic …
The Bogoliubov-deGennes equations are solved for a proximity model for YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} in a magnetic field. The model explicitly includes the effects of the one-dimensional CuO chains, whose influence on the vortex core structure is studied. The rapid vortex core contraction as a function of field which is seen experimentally at low magnetic fields is naturally explained by the presence of the chains.
Measurements of the $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quadrupolar spectrum of apical oxygen in HgBa$_{2}$CuO$_{4+δ}$ were performed over a range of magnetic fields from 6.4 to 30\,T in the superconducting state. Oxygen isotope exchanged single crystals were investigated with doping corresponding to superconducting transition temperatures from 74\,K underdoped, to 78\,K overdoped. The apical oxygen site was chosen since its NMR spectrum has narrow quadrupolar satellites that are well separated from any other resonance. Non-vortex contributions to the spectra can be deconvolved in the ti…
We report a $^{205}$Tl NMR study of vortex state for an aligned polycrystalline sample of an overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductor Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($T_{c}\sim$85 K) with magnetic field 2 T along the c axis. We observed an imperfect vortex lattice, so-called Bragg glass at $T$=5 K, coexistence of vortex solid with liquid between 10 and 60 K, and vortex melting between 65 and 85 K. No evidence for local antiferromagnetic ordering at vortex cores was found for our sample.
In type-II superconductors exposed to magnetic fields between upper and lower critical values, $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$, penetrating magnetic flux forms a lattice of vortices whose motion can induce dissipation. Consequently, the magnetization $M$ of superconductors is typically progressively weakened with increasing magnetic field $B \propto n_v$ (for vortex density $n_v$). However, some materials exhibit a non-monotonic $M(B)$, presenting a maximum in $M$ at what is known as the second magnetization peak. This phenomenon appears in most classes of superconductors, including low $T_c$ materials,…
We report site-selective $^{63}$Cu NMR studies of the vortex core states of an overdoped Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with $T_{c}$ = 85 K. We observed a relatively high density of low-energy quasi-particle excitations at the vortex cores in a magnetic field of 7.4847 T along the c axis, in contrast to YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$.
We study the vortex phase diagram of the single-layer Bi2Sr2CuO6+d (Bi2201) superconductor by means of bulk magnetization measurements on high-quality oxygen-overdoped crystals. In striking contrast with the results found in the moderately-doped two and three-layer Bi-based cuprates, Bi2201 exhibits a strong temperature-dependent second-peak effect. By means of measurements of the in and out-of-plane first-penetration field we provide direct evidence that this phenomenon is mainly associated to an increase of the electromagnetic anisotropy on warming. The effect of oxygen-doping d on the vorte…
We report the results of the c-axis infrared spectroscopy of La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4 in high magnetic field oriented parallel to the CuO_2 planes. A significant suppression of the superfluid density with magnetic field rho_s(H) is observed for both underdoped (x=0.125) and overdoped (x=0.17) samples. We show that the existing theoretical models of the Josephson vortex state fail to consistently describe the observed effects and discuss possible reasons for the discrepancies.
Muon-spin rotation (muSR) experiments are often used to study the magnetic field distribution in type-II superconductors in the vortex state. Based on the determination of the magnetic penetration depth it is frequently speculated---also controversially---about the order-parameter symmetry of the studied superconductors. This article reports on a combined muSR and magnetization study of the mixed state in the cuprate high-temperature superconductor La_{1.83}Sr_{0.17}CuO_{4} in a low magnetic field of 20 mT applied along the c axis of a single crystal. The macroscopic magnetization measurements…
A square array of Josephson junctions with modulated strength in a magnetic field with half a flux quantum per plaquette is studied by analytic arguments and dynamical simulations. The modulation is such that alternate columns of junctions are of different strength to the rest. Previous work has shown that this system undergoes an XY followed by an Ising-like vortex lattice disordering transition at a lower temperature. We argue that resistance measurements are a possible probe of the vortex lattice disordering transition as the linear resistance $R_{L}(T)\sim A(T)/L$ with $ A(T) \propto (T-T_…
The in-plane $ρ_{ab}(H,T)$ and the out-of-plane $ρ_c(H,T)$ magneto-transport in magnetic fields up to 28 T has been investigated in high quality non-superconducting (down to 20 mK) La-free Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ single crystal. By measuring the angular dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivities at temperatures from 1 K down to 30 mK, we present evidence for the presence of vortex-like excitations in a non-superconducting cuprate in the insulating state. Such excitations have previously been observed by the detection of a Nernst signal in superconducting cuprates …
The unbinding of vortex defects in the superconducting condensate with d-wave symmetry at T=0 is shown to lead to the insulator with incommensurate spin-density-wave order. The transition is similar to the spontaneous generation of the "chiral" mass in the three dimensional quantum electrodynamics, at which the global chiral symmetry one can define in the superconducting state is spontaneously broken. Other symmetry related states and possible relations to recent experiments on uderdoped cuprates are briefly discussed.
Superlattices of the repeated structure La(1.56)Sr(0.44)CuO(4)/La(2)CuO(4) (LSCO-LCO), where none of the constituents is superconducting, show a superconducting transition of T_c \simeq 25 K. In order to elucidate the nature of the superconducting state we have performed a low-energy muSR study. By applying a magnetic field parallel (Meissner state) and perpendicular (vortex state) to the film planes, we could show that superconductivity is sheet like, resulting in a very anisotropic superconducting state. This result is consistent with a simple charge-transfer model, which takes into account …
We report a crucial experimental test of the present models of the peak effect in weakly disordered type-II superconductors. Our results favor the scenario in which the peak effect arises from a crossover between the Larkin pinning length and a rapidly falling elastic length in a vortex phase populated with thermally excited topological defects. A thickness dependence study of the onset of the peak effect at varying driving currents suggests that both screw and edge dislocations are involved in the vortex lattice disordering. The driven dynamics in 3D samples are drastically different from tho…
Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments of the spin excitations in the slightly overdoped La{1.83}Sr{0.17}CuO{4} compound show that, under the application of a magnetic field of 5 Tesla, the low-temperature susceptibility undergoes a weight redistribution centered at the spin-gap energy. Furthermore, by comparing the temperature dependence of the neutron data with ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements, we conclude that the filling in of the spin gap tracks the irreversibility/melting temperature rather than Tc2, which indicates an unusual interplay between the magnetic vortices…
Low temperature specific heat of the electron-doped (n-type) infinite-layer cuprate $Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_{2}$ has been measured. The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is found to be consistent with the feature of the s-wave pairing symmetry, agreeing very well with the earlier tunnelling measurement, but being contrary to the d-wave symmetry well confirmed for the hole-doped (p-type) cuprates. Our results indicate that the electronic DOS are mainly contributed by the vortex cores in the present sample being contrast to the p-type cuprates in which the vortex cores are ab…
Superconductivity appears in the cuprates when a spin order is destroyed, while the role of charge is less known. Recently, charge density wave (CDW) was found below the superconducting dome in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ when a high magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ plane, which was suggested to arise from incipient CDW in the vortex cores that becomes overlapped. Here, by $^{63}$Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of CDW induced by an in-plane field that does not create vortex cores in the plane, setting in above the dome in single-layered Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x…
The structure and the degenracy of the ground state of a fully-frustrated XY-model are investigated for the case of a dice lattice geometry. The results are applicable for the description of Josephson junction arrays and thin superconducting wire networks in the external magnetic field providing half-integer number of flux quanta per plaquette. The mechanisms of disordering of vortex pattern in such systems are briefly discussed.
In order to investigate the inhomogeneity of the superconducting (SC) state in the overdoped high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates, we have measured the magnetic susceptibility, $χ$, of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) single crystals in the overdoped regime in magnetic fields parallel to the c-axis up to 7 T on warming after zero-field cooling. It has been found for $x$ = 0.198 and 0.219 that the temperature dependence of $χ$ in 1 T shows a plateau, that is, $χ$ is almost independent of temperature in a moderate temperature-range in the SC state. Moreover, a so-called second peak in the magnetization curve…
We present an analytical study of diamagnetism and transport in a film with superconducting phase fluctuations, formulated in terms of vortex dynamics within the Debye-Hückle approximation. We find that the diamagnetic and Nernst signals decay strongly with temperature in a manner which is dictated by the vortex core energy. Using the theory to interpret Nernst measurements of underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ above the critical temperature regime we obtain a considerably better fit to the data than a fit based on Gaussian order-parameter fluctuations. Our results indicate that the core energ…
The vortex core radius \rv, defined as the peak position of the supercurrent around the vortex, has been determined by muon spin rotation measurements in the mixed state of \lscox for $x=0.13$, 0.15, and 0.19. At lower doping (x=0.13 and 0.15), \rv(T) increases with decreasing temperature T, which is opposite to the behavior predicted by the conventional theory. Moreover, \rv(T\to0) is significantly larger than the Ginsburg-Landau coherence length determined by the upper critical field, and shows a clear tendency to decrease with increasing the doping x. These features can be qualitatively rep…
The NMR and NQR spectra of $^{63}$Cu in the CuO$_2$ plane of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ in the superconducting state are discussed in terms of the phenomenological theory of Ginzburg-Landau type extended to lower temperatures. We show that the observed spectra, Kumagai {\em et al.}, PRB {\bf 63}, 144502 (2001), can be explained by a standard theory of the Bernoulli potential with the charge transfer between CuO$_2$ planes and CuO chains assumed.
We report a study of the basal-plane anisotropy of the superfluid density in underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ (Y124), showing the effects of both the CuO$_{2}$ planes and the fully occupied CuO chains. From small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice, we can infer the superconducting (SC) properties for a temperature ($T$) range $T=$ 1.5 K to $T_{\rm c}$ and magnetic induction $B$ from 0.1 to 6 T. We find that the superfluid density along \textbf{a} has a simple $d$-wave T-dependence. However, along \textbf{b} (the chain direction) the superfluid density falls much mor…
Second magnetization peak (SMP) in hole-doped cuprates and iron pnictide superconductors has been widely explored. However, similar feature in the family of electron-doped cuprates is not common. Here, we report the vortex dynamics study in the single crystal of an electron-doped cuprate Pr$_{0.87}$LaCe$_{0.13}$CuO$_4$ superconductor using dc magnetization measurements. A SMP feature in the isothermal $M(H)$ was observed for $H$$\parallel$$ab$-planes. On the other hand, no such feature was observed for $H$$\parallel$$c$-axis in the crystal. Using magnetic relaxation data, a detailed analysis o…
We have investigated the in-plane $I(V)$ characteristics and the Josephson vortex flow resistance in high-quality La-free Bi$_{2+x}$Sr$_{2-x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) single crystals in parallel and tilted magnetic fields at temperatures down to 40 mK. For parallel magnetic fields below the resistive upper critical field $H^{*}_{c2}$, the $I(V)$ characteristic obey a power-law with a smooth change with increasing magnetic-field of the exponent from above 5 down to 1. In contrast to the double-layer cuprate Bi2212, the observed smooth change suggests that there is no change in the mechanism of diss…
We study theoretically the simultaneous effect of a regular and a random pinning potentials on the vortex lattice structure at filling factor of 1. This structure is determined by a competition between the square symmetry of regular pinning array, by the intervortex interaction favoring a triangular symmetry, and by the randomness trying to depin vortices from their regular positions. Both analytical and molecular-dynamics approaches are used. We construct a phase diagram of the system in the plane of regular and random pinning strengths and determine typical vortex lattice defects appearing i…
The order of the vortex state in La_{1.9} Sr_{0.1} CuO_{4} is probed using muon spin rotation and small-angle neutron scattering. A transition from a Bragg glass to a vortex glass is observed, where the latter is composed of disordered vortex lines. In the vicinity of the transition the microscopic behavior reflects a delicate interplay of thermally-induced and pinning-induced disorder.
Using small-angle neutron scattering we have studied the vortex lattice in superconducting MgB$_2$ with the magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis, doped with either manganese or carbon to achieve a similar suppression of the critical temperature. For Mn-doping, the vortex lattice phase diagram remains qualitatively similar to that of pure MgB$_2$, undergoing a field-and temperature-driven $30^{\circ}$ rotation transition, indicating only a modest effect on the vortex-vortex interaction. In contrast, the vortex lattice rotation transition is completely suppressed in the C-doped case, likely…
We report muon-spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the electron-doped high-T_c superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. In zero external magnetic field, superconductivity is found to coexist with Cu spins that are static on the muSR time scale. In an applied field, we observe a Knight shift that is primarily due to the magnetic moment induced on the Pr ions. Below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, an additional source of static magnetic order appears throughout the sample. This finding is consistent with antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cu spins in …
The spontaneous expulsion of applied magnetic field, the Meissner effect, is a defining feature of superconductors; in Type-II superconductors above the lower critical field, this screening takes the form of a lattice of magnetic flux vortices. Using implanted spin-1/2 positive muons, one can measure the vortex lattice field distribution through the spin precession and deduce key parameters of the superconducting ground state, and thereby fundamental properties of the superconducting pairing. Muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments have indeed revealed much interesting physics in the…
Using sound velocity and attenuation measurements in high magnetic fields, we identify a new transition in the vortex lattice state of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). The transition, observed in magnetic fields exceeding 35 T and temperatures far below zero field $T_c$, is detected in the compression modulus of the vortex lattice, at a doping level $x=p=0.17$. Our theoretical analysis based on Eilenberger theory of vortex lattice shows that the transition corresponds to the long-sought 45 degrees rotation of the square vortex lattice, predicted to occur in $d$-wave superconductors near a van…
Recently, Kotzler et al. measured the frequency-dependent conductance for YBa_2Cu_3O_7 and interpreted their results as evidences that the decay of the superfluid density is caused by a 3D vortex loop proliferation mechanism and a dimensional crossover when the correlation length $ξ_c$ along the c axis becomes comparable to the sample thickness $d$ [PRL 87, 127005(2001)]. In this Comment, we show that the complex conductance data presented by Kotzler et al. have characteristic key features not compatible with their analysis, which are instead described by the existing phenomenology of 2D vorte…
The nature of the superconducting transition in highly underdoped thick films of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=0.07$ and 0.08) has been investigated using the in-plane transport measurements. The contribution of superconducting fluctuations to the conductivity in zero magnetic field, or paraconductivity, was determined from the magnetoresistance measured in fields applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. Both the temperature dependence of the paraconductivity above the transition and the nonlinear current-voltage ($I-V$) characteristics measured across it, exhibit the main signatures of the …
Simultaneous transport and magnetization studies in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 crystals at elevated currents reveal large discrepancies, including finite resistivity at temperatures of 40K below the magnetic irreversibility line. This resistivity, measured at the top surface, is non-monotonic in temperature and extremely non-linear. The vortex velocity derived from magnetization is six orders of magnitude lower than the velocity derived from simultaneous transport measurements. The new findings are ascribed to a shear-induced decoupling, in which the pancake vortices flow only in the top few CuO2 planes, a…
We present a possible explanation for a recently observed magnetic field induced charge order in cuprate superconductors (Edkins et al.~arXiv:1802.04673 [cond-mat.supr-con]). We argue that it arises from the reorganization of spin-vortex-induced loop current (SVILC) pattern due to supercurrent-flow caused by the magnetic field. The reorganization is from the most stable tiling of $4a times 6a$ spin-vortex quartets ($a$ is the lattice constant in the CuO$_2$ plane, and a spin-vortex quartet is stable of unit of spin-vortices that contains four holes, four spin-vortices, and four SVILCs) to that…
We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice (VL) in CeCoIn5 with magnetic fields applied parallel (H) to the antinodal [100] and nodal [110] directions. For H || [100], a single VL orientation is observed, while a 90 degree reorientation transition is found for H || [110]. For both field orientations and VL configurations we find a distorted hexagonal VL with an anisotropy, Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.05. The VL form factor shows strong Pauli paramagnetic effects similar to what have previously been reported for H || [001]. At high fields, above which the upper critical field…
The internal magnetic field distribution in a mixed state of a cuprate superconductor, Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_x$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ ($T_{\rm c}\simeq28.5$ K, near the optimal doping), was measured by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) technique up to 60 kOe. The $μ$SR linewidth $Λ(B)$ which exhibits excess broadening at higher fields ($B>5$ kOe) due to field-induced magnetism (FIM), is described by a relation, $Λ(B)\propto\sqrt{B}$. This suggests that the orbital current and associated quasiparticle excitation plays predominant roles in stabilizing the quasistatic correlation. Moreover, a slowing down of the vortex …
Vortex fluctuations in the $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4+δ}$ system have been studied as a function of magnetic field, temperature and carrier concentration in order to determine the dimensionality of the fluctuations. For a $x=0.10$ sample, there is a unique crossing-temperature on the magnetization vs. temperature plots for all magnetic fields up to 7 T, and the data scale very well with 2D fluctuation theory. At lower x-values where $H_{c2}$ is much smaller, there are two well defined crossing points, one at low fields (typically less than 1 T) and another at high fields (typically 3-7 T). A fit of…
Site-dependent NMR relaxation time $T_1({\bf r})$ is calculated in the vortex state using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, taking account of possible "field-induced stripe'' states in which the magnetism arises locally around a vortex core in d-wave superconductivity. The recently observed huge enhancement $T_1^{-1}({\bf r})$ below $T_c$ at a core site in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_6$ is explained. The field-induced stripe picture explains consistently other relevant STM and neutron experiments.
Calculations of magnetic field produced by spin-vortex-induced loop currents in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ thin films using the particle-number conserving Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism
Based on the newly developed real-space spin-parallel pairing and superconducting theory, we explore a simple explanation for the observed checkerboard patterns in hole-doped Ca{2-x}Na{x}CuO{2}Cl{2} cuprate superconductor. At a hole concentration x=1/8=0.125, the analytical results show that there exists a phase competition between non-superconducting 4a*4b (a=b) checkerboard phase and 8a*2c superconducting vortex phase, where a, b and c are the lattice constants of the superconductor. At a lower hole concentration x=1/16=0.0625, it is revealed that the metastable 4\sqrt{2}a*4\sqrt{2}a checker…
By using thermal and Lorentz force, the vortex motion is successfully manipulated in the mixed state of underdoped La$_{2 - x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals and optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7 - δ}$ thin films. A conclusion is drawn that the strong Nernst signal above $T_{c}$ is induced by vortex motion. In the normal state, in order to reduce the dissipative contribution from the quasiparticle scattering and enhance the signal due to the possible vortex motion, a new measurement configuration is proposed. It is found that the in-plane Nernst signal ($H$ $| | $ $c$) can be measurabl…
A spontaneous vortex state (SVS) between 30 K and 56 K was observed for the weak-ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 with ferromagnetic Curie temperature TC = 131 K and superconducting transition temperature Tc = 56 K. The low field (20 G) Superconducting hysteresis loop indicates a narrow Meissner state region within average lower critical field Bc1(T)= Bc1(0)[1 - (T/T0)2], with average Bave c1 (0) = 12 G and T0 = 30 K. Full Meissner shielding signal in very low applied field indicates an ab-plane Bab c1(0) ~ 4 G with an estimated anisotropic parameter g ~ 7 for this layered system. The…
We report on muon spin rotation measurements of the internal magnetic field distribution n(B) in the vortex solid phase of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) single crystals, from which we have simultaneously determined the hole doping dependences of the in-plane Ginzburg-Landau (GL) length scales in the underdoped regime. We find that Tc has a sublinear dependence on 1/lambda_{ab}^2, where lambda_{ab} is the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in the extrapolated limits T -> 0 and H -> 0. The power coefficient of the sublinear dependence is close to that determined in severely underdoped YBCO thin films, indic…
The superfluid density of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films of high quality have been measured with Tc (defined by the onset of the Meissner effect) from 5.1 to 41.6 K by Bosovic et al. Given this Tc the superfluid density shows no clear evidence of critical fluctuations and no indication of vortex unbinding as T->Tc. Nevertheless, the superfluid density displays the expected behavior for for a quantum phase transition (QPT) in the (3+1)D-xy universality class, rho(T=0)~Tc^2. However, this relation is also a hallmark of dirty superconductors, treated in the mean-field approximation.…
