We present a symmetry-projected configuration mixing scheme to describe ground and excited states, with well defined quantum numbers, of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearestneighbor hopping and periodic boundary conditions. Results for the half-filled 2{\times}4, 4{\times}4, and 6{\times}6 lattices, as well as doped 4 {\times} 4 systems, compare well with available results, both exact and from other state-of-the-art approximations. We report spectral functions and density of states obtained from a well-controlled ansatz for the (Ne {\pm} 1)-electron system. Symmetry projected methods have been widely used for the many-body nuclear physics problem but have received little attention in the solid state community. Given their relatively low (mean-field) computational cost and the high quality of results here reported, we believe that they deserve further scrutiny.
We use the $C_{4v}$ symmetry group of the 4-site Hubbard model to construct a ground state variational wave function of two- and four interacting electrons. In the limit $U\rightarrow 0$, ground state energies of the two- and four interacting electrons system is of the order $-4t$. The variational wave function of the four interacting electrons obtained using the $B_1$ irreducible representation is valid for on-site Coulomb repulsion, while the one obtained using the $A_1$ representation is valid for negative values of the Coulomb interaction. The system exhibits antiferromagnetic correlations…
An infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) is a variational tensor network ansatz for 2D wave functions in the thermodynamic limit where the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the bond dimension $D$. We show that for the doped Hubbard model in the strongly correlated regime ($U/t=8$, $n=0.875$) iPEPS yields lower variational energies than state-of-the-art variational methods in the large 2D limit, which demonstrates the competitiveness of the method. In order to obtain an accurate estimate of the energy in the exact infinite $D$ limit we introduce and test an extrapolation te…
We study the properties of Floquet prethermal states in two-dimensional Mott-insulating Hubbard clusters under continuous optical excitation. With exact-diagonalization simulations, we show that Floquet prethermal states emerge not only off resonance, but also for resonant excitation, provided a small field amplitude. In the resonant case, the long-lived quasi-stationary Floquet states are characterized by Rabi oscillations of observables such as double occupation and kinetic energy. At stronger fields, thermalization to infinite temperature is observed. We understand these results in terms of…
Density matrix embedding theory (DMET) is a quantum embedding theory for strongly correlated systems. From a computational perspective, one bottleneck in DMET is the optimization of the correlation potential to achieve self-consistency, especially for heterogeneous systems of large size. We propose a new method, called projected density matrix embedding theory (p-DMET), which achieves self-consistency without needing to optimize a correlation potential. We demonstrate the performance of p-DMET on the two-dimensional Hubbard model.
We compute exactly the von Neumann entanglement entropy of the eta-pairing states - a large set of exact excited eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. For the singlet eta-pairing states the entropy scales with the logarithm of the spatial dimension of the (smaller) partition. For the eta-pairing states with finite spin magnetization density, the leading term can scale as the volume or as the area-times-log, depending on the momentum space occupation of the Fermions with flipped spins. We also compute the corrections to the leading scaling. In order to study the eigenstate thermalization hypo…
Functional renormalization group without functional integrals: implementing Hilbert space projections for strongly correlated electrons via Hubbard X-operators
The few determinant (FED) methodology, introduced in our previous works for 1D lattices, is here adapted for the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling and with finite doping fractions. Within this configuration mixing scheme, a given ground state with well defined spin and space group quantum numbers, is expanded in terms of a nonorthogonal symmetry-projected basis determined through chains of variation-after projection calculations. The results obtained for the ground state and correlation energies of half-filled and doped 4$\times$4, 6$\times$6, 8$\times$8, and 10$\times$10…
Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) detects various types of high- and low-energy elementary excitations in correlated solids, and this tool will play an increasingly important role in investigations of time-dependent phenomena in photo-excited systems. While theoretical frameworks for the computation of equilibrium RIXS spectra are well established, the development of appropriate methods for nonequilibrium simulations are an active research field. Here, we apply a recently developed nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) based approach to compute the RIXS response of photo-e…
Motivated by the recent progress in time-resolved nonequilibrium spectroscopy in condensed matter, we study an optically excited one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model by exact diagonalization. The model is relevant to organic crystals, transition metal oxides, or ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We implement numerical pump-probe measurements to calculate time-dependent conductivity and single-particle spectral functions. In general, short optical excitation induces a metallic behavior imprinted as a Drude peak in conductivity or an in-gap density of states. In a Mott insulator, we find that …
In connection with recent experiments on excitation in which Mott insulators change to conductors, we study the properties of excited states beyond the Mott gap as quasi-stationary states for a two-dimensional Hubbard (t-t'-U) model at half filling. A variational Monte Carlo method is used with trial wave functions for paramagnetic or normal (PM), superconducting with dx2-y2-wave (d-SC), isotropic s-wave, and extended s-wave symmetries, and antiferromagnetic (AF) states. The excited states are generated by imposing a minimum number of doubly occupied sites (doublons) D_L on the lowest-energy s…
We theoretically investigate the effects of the lattice geometry on the nonequilibrium dynamics of photo-excited carriers in a half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model. Using a nonequilibrium generalization of the dynamical cluster approximation, we compare the relaxation dynamics in lattices which interpolate between the triangular lattice and square lattice configuration and thus reveal the role of the geometric frustration in these strongly correlated nonequilibrium systems. In particular, we show that the cooling effect resulting from the disordering of the spin background is less effecti…
Femtosecond relaxation of photo-excited quasiparticles in the one dimensional Mott insulator ET-F2TCNQ are measured as a function of external pressure, which is used to tune the electronic structure. By fitting the static optical properties and measuring femtosecond decay times at each pressure value, we correlate the relaxation rates with the electronic bandwidth t and on the intersite correlation energy V. The scaling of relaxation times with microscopic parameters is different than for metals and semiconductors. The competition between localization and delocalization of the Mott-Hubbard exc…
We develop a generalization of the Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) + Hubbard $U$ (DFT+$U$) method to the excited-state regime. This has the form of Hubbard $U$ corrected linear-response time-dependent DFT, or `TDDFT+$U$'. Combined with calculated linear-response Hubbard $U$ parameters, it may provide a computationally light, first-principles method for the simulation of tightly-bound excitons on transition-metal ions. Our presented implementation combines linear-scaling DFT+$U$ and linear-scaling TDDFT, but the approach is broadly applicable. In detailed benchmark tests on two Ni-…
We present a method incorporating biorthogonal orbital-optimization, symmetry projection, and double-occupancy screening with a non-unitary similarity transformation generated by the Gutzwiller factor $ n_{i\uparrow}n_{i\downarrow}$, and apply it to the Hubbard model. Energies are calculated with mean-field computational scaling with high-quality results comparable to coupled cluster singles and doubles. This builds on previous work performing similarity transformations with more general, two-body Jastrow-style correlators. The theory is tested on two-dimensional lattices ranging from small sy…

Projected Hartree-Fock theory provides an accurate description of many kinds of strong correlation but does not properly describe weakly correlated systems. Coupled cluster theory, in contrast, does the opposite. It therefore seems natural to combine the two so as to describe both strong and weak correlations with high accuracy in a relatively black-box manner. Combining the two approaches, however, is made more difficult by the fact that the two techniques are formulated very differently. In earlier work, we showed how to write spin-projected Hartree-Fock in a coupled-cluster-like language. H…
Unconventional strongly correlated phases of the repulsive Fermi-Hubbard model, which could be emulated by ultracold vapors loaded in optical lattices, are investigated by means of energy minimizations with quantum number projection before variation and without any assumed order parameter. In a tube-like geometry of optical plaquettes to realize the four-leg ladder Hubbard Hamiltonian, we highlight the intertwining of spin-, charge-, and pair-density waves embedded in a uniform d-wave superfluid background. As the lattice filling increases, this phase emerges from homogenous states exhibiting …
We present an approach to the calculation of arbitrary spectral, thermal and excited state properties within the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo framework. This is achieved via an unbiased projection of the Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem into a space of stochastically sampled Krylov vectors, thus enabling the calculation of real-frequency spectral and thermal properties and avoiding explicit analytic continuation. We use this approach to calculate temperature-dependent properties and one- and two-body spectral functions for various Hubbard models, as well as isolated excited…
The excitation ansatz for tensor networks is a powerful tool for simulating the low-lying quasiparticle excitations above ground states of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. Recently, the two-dimensional tensor network class of infinite entangled pair states gained new ground state optimization methods based on automatic differentiation, which are at the same time highly accurate and simple to implement. Naturally, the question arises whether these new ideas can also be used to optimize the excitation ansatz, which has recently been implemented in two dimensions as well. In this pa…
We investigate the real-time dynamics of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime, when driven by a transient laser pulse. Starting from a wide regime displaying a charge-density wave in equilibrium, a robust photoinduced in-gap state appears in the optical conductivity, depending on the parameters of the pulse. Here, by tuning its conditions, we maximize the overlap of the time-evolving wavefunction with excited states displaying the elusive bond-ordered wave of this model. Finally, we make a clear connection between the emergence of this order and …
A repulsive Coulomb interaction between electrons in different orbitals in correlated materials can give rise to bound quasiparticle states. We study the non-hybridized two-orbital Hubbard model with intra (inter)-orbital interaction $U$ ($U_{12}$) and different band widths using an improved dynamical mean field theory numerical technique which leads to reliable spectra on the real energy axis directly at zero temperature. We find that a finite density of states at the Fermi energy in one band is correlated with the emergence of well defined quasiparticle states at excited energies $Δ=U-U_{12}…
We extend our low-scaling variational Monte Carlo (VMC) algorithm to optimize the symmetry projected Jastrow mean field (SJMF) wavefunctions. These wavefunctions consist of a symmetry-projected product of a Jastrow and a general broken-symmetry mean field reference. Examples include Jastrow antisymmetrized geminal power (JAGP), Jastrow-Pfaffians, and resonating valence bond (RVB) states among others, all of which can be treated with our algorithm. We will demonstrate using benchmark systems including the nitrogen molecule, a chain of hydrogen atoms, and the 2-D Hubbard model that a significant…
Gross-Oliveira-Kohn density-functional theory (GOK-DFT) is an extension of DFT to excited states where the basic variable is the ensemble density, i.e. the weighted sum of ground- and excited-state densities. The ensemble energy (i.e. the weighted sum of ground- and excited-state energies) can be obtained variationally as a functional of the ensemble density. Like in DFT, the key ingredient to model in GOK-DFT is the exchange-correlation functional. Developing density-functional approximations (DFAs) for ensembles is a complicated task as both density and weight dependencies should in principl…
We present a straightforward implementation scheme for solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation for systems described by the Hubbard Hamiltonian with time dependent hoppings. The computations can be performed for clusters of up to 14 sites with in principle general geometry. For the time evolution, we use the exponential midpoint rule, where the exponentials are computed via a Krylov subspace method, which only uses matrix-vector multiplication. The presented implementation uses standard libraries for constructing sparse matrices and for linear algebra therefore the approach is easy to …
We calculate and resolve with unprecedented detail the local density of states (DOS) and momentum-dependent spectral functions at zero temperature of one of the key models for strongly correlated electron materials, the degenerate two-orbital Kanamori-Hubbard model, by means of a highly optimized Dynamical Mean Field Theory which uses the Density Matrix Renormalization Group as the impurity solver. When the system is hole doped, and in the presence of a finite interorbital Coulomb interaction we find the emergence of a novel holon-doublon in-gap subband which is split by the Hund's coupling. W…
A new mean field theory is proposed for the Mott transition in the Hubbard model based on the slave rotor representation of the electron operator. This theory provides a better description of the role of the long range charge correlation in the Mott insulating state and offers a good estimation of the critical correlation strength for the Mott transition. We have constructed a new variational wave function for the Mott insulating state based on this new slave rotor mean field theory. We find this new variational wave function outperforms the conventional Jastrow type wave function with long ra…
