The hyperfine interaction between the quadrupole moment of atomic nuclei and the electric field gradient (EFG) provides information on the electronic charge distribution close to a given atomic site. In ferroelectric materials, the loss of inversion symmetry of the electronic charge distribution is necessary for the appearance of the electric polarization. We present first-principles density functional theory calculations of ferroelectrics such as BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3 and other oxides with perovskite structures, by focusing on both EFG tensors and polarization. We analyze the EFG tensor properties such as orientation and correlation between components and their link with electric polarization. This work supports previous studies of ferroelectric materials where a relation between EFG tensors and polarization was observed, which may be exploited to study ferroelectric order when standard techniques to measure polarization are not easily applied.
We present a systematic first-principles study of the phonon spectrum of hexagonal YMnO3 in ferroelectric (multiferroic) phase. We investigated in detail the low-energy phonon modes, their dispersion, symmetry, as well as the infrared optical properties of the crystal and determined the phonon density of states.
Within the broad class of multiferroics (compounds showing a coexistence of magnetism and ferroelectricity), we focus on the subclass of "improper electronic ferroelectrics", i.e. correlated materials where electronic degrees of freedom (such as spin, charge or orbital) drive ferroelectricity. In particular, in spin-induced ferroelectrics, there is not only a {\em coexistence} of the two intriguing magnetic and dipolar orders; rather, there is such an intimate link that one drives the other, suggesting a giant magnetoelectric coupling. Via first-principles approaches based on density functiona…
Electrostriction is an important material property that characterizes how strain changes with the development of polarization inside a material. We show that \textit{ab initio }techniques developed in recent years can be exploited to compute and understand electrostriction of ferroelectric materials. Here, electrostriction coefficients of ferroelectric BaTiO$_{3}$, PbTiO$_{3}$, as well as dielectric BaZrO$_{3}$, are obtained and analyzed. Possible causes of the difference between experimental and numerical results are discussed. We also identified that relative displacements between certain io…
Based on ab initio density functional theory, we have investigated a microscopic mechanism that leads to Fe$^{2+}_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}_{B}$ dimerization and consequent ferroelectricity in charge ordered Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ with $P2$ symmetry. In addition to the simple inter-site Coulomb repulsion, quantum hybridization effects are invoked to explain the Fe$^{2+}_{B}$/Fe$^{3+}_{B}$ bond dimerization. Our results, based on the generalized gradient approximation + Hubbard $U$ (GGA+$U$) method, indicate that noncentrosymmetric $P2$ magnetite shows a finite and sizeable ferroelectric polarization along the $b…
We have developed first-principles models, based on a general parametrization of the full potential-energy surface, to investigate the lattice-dynamical properties of perovskite oxides. We discuss the application of our method to prototypic ferroelectric PbTiO3, showing that its properties are drastically affected by a competition between structural instabilities. Indeed, we confirm previous indications that the destructive interaction between the ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive (involving rotations of the O6 octahedra) soft modes shifts PbTiO3's Curie temperature by hundreds of degrees.…
Using first principle calculations under the framework of density functional theory we have investigated the electronic structure, magnetism and ferroelectric polarization in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet AgFeO2, and its comparison to the isostructural system CuFeO2. Our calculations reveal that spin orbit interaction plays an important role in determining the magnetic property of AgFeO2 and is possibly responsible for its different magnetic ground state in comparison to CuFeO2. Calculations of ferroelectric polarization of AgFeO2 suggest that the spontaneous polarization arises from …
Ab initio simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects have been used to examine the order-disorder transition in squaric acid, a prototypical H-bonded antiferroelectric crystal. Our simulations reproduce the >100 K difference in transition temperature observed upon deuteration as well as the strong geometrical isotope effect observed on intermolecular separations within the crystal. We find that collective transfer of protons along the H-bonding chains - facilitated by quantum mechanical tunneling - is critical to the order-disorder transition and the geometrical isotope effect. This …
An ab initio structure optimization technique is newly developed to determine the valley line on a total-energy surface for zone-center distortions of ferroelectric perovskite oxides and is applied to barium titanate BaTiO3 and lead titanate PbTiO3. The proposed technique is an improvement over King-Smith and Vanderbilt's scheme [Phys. Rev. B 49, p.5828 (1994)] of evaluating total energy as a function of the amplitude of atomic displacements. The results of numerical calculations show that total energy can be expressed as a fourth-order function of the amplitude of atomic displacements in BaTi…
A multidomain two-dimensional periodically poled ferroelectric plate vibrator is reported for the first time. The theoretical calculations, computer simulations by the Finite Element Method and experimental data from the lithium tantalite samples reveal a domain acousto-electric resonance. A polarization inversion in a y-rotated cut of a ferroelectric chip is firstly done. The acousto-electric characteristics of the vibrator are calculated and measured.
We investigate the strain dependence of the ferroelectric polarization and the structure of the ferroelectric domain walls in the layered perovskite-related barium fluorides, BaMF$_4$ (M=Mg, Zn). The unusual "geometric ferroelectricity" in these materials is driven by the softening of a single polar phonon mode consisting of rotations of the MF$_6$ octahedra accompanied by polar displacements of the Ba cations, and in contrast to conventional ferroelectrics involves minimal electronic rehybridization. We therefore anticipate a different strain dependence of the polarization, and alternative do…
We present a systematic approach to modeling the electrical and structural properties of charge-mismatched superlattices from first principles. Our strategy is based on bulk calculations of the parent compounds, which we perform as a function of in-plane strain and out-of-plane electric displacement field. The resulting two-dimensional phase diagrams allow us to accurately predict, without performing further calculations, the behavior of a layered heterostructure where the aforementioned building blocks are electrostatically and elastically coupled, with an arbitrary choice of the interface ch…
The discovery of ferroelectric properties of binary oxides revitalized the interest in ferroelectrics and bridged the scaling gap between the state-of-the-art semiconductor technology and ferroelectric memories. However, before hitting the markets, the origin of ferroelectricity and in-depth studies of device characteristics are needed. Establishing a correlation between the performance of the device and underlying physical mechanisms is the first step toward understanding the device and engineering guidelines for a novel, superior device. Therefore, in this paper a holistic modeling approache…

Optimizing ferroelectrics for contemporary high-frequency applications asks for the fundamental understanding of ferroelectric switching and domain wall (DW) motion in ultrafast field pulses while the microscopic understanding of the latter is so far incomplete. To close this gap in knowledge, ab initio-based molecular dynamics simulations are utilized to analyze the dynamics of 180$^\grad# DWs in the prototypical ferroelectric material BaTiO 3 . How ultrafast field application initially excites the dipoles in the system and how they relax to their steady state via transient negative capacitan…
The nonlinear optical properties and electro-optic effects of some oxygen-octahedric ferroelectrics are studied by the density functional theory (DFT) in the local density approximation (LDA) expressions based on first principle calculations without the scissor approximation. We present calculations of the frequency- dependent complex dielectric function and the second harmonic generation response coefficient \c{hi}(2)(-2ω,ω,ω) over a large frequency range in tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. The electronic linear electrooptic susceptibility \c{hi}(2) (-ω,ω,0) is also evaluated below the ban…
An effective Hamiltonian for the ferroelectric transition in PbTiO3 is constructed from first-principles density-functional-theory total-energy and linear-response calculations through the use of a localized, symmetrized basis set of ``lattice Wannier functions.'' Explicit parametrization of the polar lattice Wannier functions is used for subspace projection, addressing the issues of LO-TO splitting and coupling to the complementary subspace. In contrast with ferroelectric BaTiO3 and KNbO3, we find significant involvement of the Pb atom in the lattice instability. Monte Carlo simulations for t…
We have investigated the atomistic structure of the 180-degree and 90-degree domain boundaries in the ferroelectric perovskite compound PbTiO3 using a first-principles ultrasoft-pseudopotential approach. For each case we have computed the position, thickness and creation energy of the domain walls, and an estimate of the barrier height for their motion has been obtained. We find both kinds of domain walls to be very narrow with a similar width of the order of one to two lattice constants. The energy of the 90-dergree domain wall is calculated to be 35 mJ/m^2, about a factor of four lower than …
For the ferroelectric perovskite compounds BaTiO3 and PbTiO3, we have studied the effects of external electric fields on the structural properties of the (001) surfaces. The field-induced changes in the surface interlayer spacings and bucklings have been calculated using a first-principles ultrasoft-pseudopotential approach, and the change of the polarization and the ferroelectric distortions in the surface layers have been obtained. The surfaces are represented by periodically repeated slabs, and an external dipole layer is included in the vacuum region of the supercells to control the electr…
By means of ab initio calculations the possibilities of switchable spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface of antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric perovskites, i.e., LaMnO3/BaTiO3 superlattice, were investigated. We demonstrate that at the heterostructure with TiO2/LaO interfacial layers the two-dimensional conducting state arises mainly localized within the interfacial MnO layer. The density of states at the Fermi-level can be tuned by ferroelectric polarization reversal. The conducting state coexists with magnetic one mainly arose from Mn atoms.
Measurements of the structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R=rare earths (Ho) and Y) for temperatures significantly above the ferroelectric transition temperature (TFE) were conducted to determine the nature of the transition. The local and long range structural measurements were complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. With respect to the Mn sites in YMnO3 and HoMnO3, we find no large atomic (bond distances or thermal factors), electronic structure changes or rehybridization on crossing TFE from local structural methods. The local symmetry about the Mn sites is preserved. With respect…
By performing accurate ab-initio density functional theory calculations, we study the role of $4f$ electrons in stabilizing the magnetic-field-induced ferroelectric state of DyFeO$_{3}$. We confirm that the ferroelectric polarization is driven by an exchange-strictive mechanism, working between adjacent spin-polarized Fe and Dy layers, as suggested by Y. Tokunaga [Phys. Rev. Lett, \textbf{101}, 097205 (2008)]. A careful electronic structure analysis suggests that coupling between Dy and Fe spin sublattices is mediated by Dy-$d$ and O-$2p$ hybridization. Our results are robust with respect to t…
We propose a model of magneto-electric effect in doped magnetic ferroelectrics. This magneto-electric effect does not involve the spin-orbit coupling and is based purely on the Coulomb interaction. We calculate magnetic phase diagram of doped magnetic ferroelectrics. We show that magneto-electric coupling is pronounced only for ferroelectrics with low dielectric constant. We find that magneto-electric coupling leads to modification of magnetization temperature dependence in the vicinity of ferroelectric phase transition. A peak of magnetization appears. We find that magnetization of doped magn…
The lattice instabilities of perovskite structure oxides are responsible for many of their interesting properties, such as temperature-dependent ferroelectric phase transitions. First-principles calculations using linear response theory provide an accurate means to determine the lattice dynamics throughout the entire Brillouin zone (BZ). Using the LAPW linear response method, we have previously carried out such a study on ferroelectric KNbO3. We present here the results of a similar investigation for cubic SrTiO3. While KNbO3 has only ferroelectric-type instabilities, SrTiO3 exhibits both ferr…

The contribution of a built-in electric field to ferroelectric phase transition in asymmetric ferroelectric tunnel junctions is studied using a multiscale thermodynamic model. It is demonstrated in details that there exists a critical thickness at which an unusual ferroelectric-\'\' polar non-ferroelectric\rq\rq phase transition occurs in asymmetric ferroelectric tunnel junctions. In the \'\' polar non-ferroelectric\rq\rq phase, there is only one non-switchable polarization which is caused by the competition between the depolarizing field and the built-in field, and closure-like domains are pr…
The kinetic theory of switching processes in crystalline ferroelectric materials under the influence of a variable external electric field is formulated. The basic equations are derived and their exact analytical solution at arbitrary time-dependent external field are obtained. Connection between the hysteresis loops shape and variable external electric field parameters is investigated numerically. The numerical results were found to be in excellent agreement with the experiments. PACS: 77.80.Fm, 77.80.Dj, 77.80.-e Keywords: ferroelectrics, switching processes, hysteresis curves, polarization
Ferroelectric semiconductor field effect transistors (FeSmFETs), which employ ferroelectric semiconducting thin crystals of α-In2Se3 as the channel material as opposed to the gate dielectric in conventional ferroelectric FETs (FeFETs) were prepared and measured from room to the liquid-helium temperatures. These FeSmFETs were found to yield evidence for the reorientation of the electrical polarization and an electric field induced metallic state in α-In2Se3. Our findings suggest that FeSmFETs can serve as a platform for the fundamental study of ferroelectric metals as well as the exploration of…
We have studied ab initio the phase transition in PbZrO3, a perovskite oxide usually presented as the prototypic anti-ferroelectric material. Our work reveals the crucial role that anti-ferrodistortive modes -- involving concerted rotations of the oxygen octahedra in the structure -- play in the transformation, as they select the observed anti-ferroelectric phase, among competing structural variants, via a cooperative trilinear coupling.
We develop a shell model (SM) for potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) which is fitted to ab initio (AI) results that include nonlocal van der Waals corrections. The SM is comprehensively tested by comparing results of structural, vibrational and ferroelectric properties with AI and experimental data. The relaxed structural parameters are in very good agreement with the AI results and the available experimental data. The $Γ$-point phonons and the total phonon densities of states (DOSs) in the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases calculated with the developed SM are in good overall agreement w…
Ultrafast optical control of ferroelectricity using intense terahertz fields has attracted significant interest. Here we show that the nonlinear interactions between two optical phonons in SnTe, a two-dimensional in-plane ferroelectric material, enables a dynamical amplification of the electric polarization within subpicoseconds time domain. Our first principles time dependent simulations show that the infrared-active out-of-plane phonon mode, pumped to nonlinear regimes, spontaneously generates in-plane motions, leading to rectified oscillations in the in-plane electric polarization. We sugge…
Using the modified Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire thermodynamic theory, it is found that the coupling between stress gradient and polarization, or flexoelectricity, has significant effect on ferroelectric properties of epitaxial thin films, such as polarization, free energy profile and hysteresis loop. However, this effect can be completely eliminated by applying an optimized external, uniform electric field. The role of such uniform electric field is shown to be the same as that of an ideal gradient electric field which can suppress the flexoelectricty effect completely based on the present theor…
We demonstrate that the magnetization of a ferromagnet in contact with an antiferromagnetic multiferroic (LuMnO3) can be speedily reversed by electric field pulsing, and the sign of the magnetic exchange bias can switch and recover isothermally. As LuMnO3 is not ferroelastic, our data conclusively show that this switching is not mediated by strain effects but is a unique electric-field driven decoupling of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains walls. Their distinct dynamics are essential for the observed magnetic switching.
We report polarized neutron scattering and piezoresponse force microscopy studies of millimeter-sized single crystals of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$. The crystals, grown below the Curie temperature, consist of a single ferroelectric domain. Two unique electric polarization directions, as well as the populations of equivalent spiral magnetic domains, can be switched reversibly by an electric field. A ferroelectric monodomain with a single-$q$ single-helicity spin spiral can be obtained. This level of control, so far unachievable in thin films, makes single-crystal BiFeO$_3$ a promising object for mu…
We investigate magnetic domain wall (MDW) dynamics induced by applied electric fields in ferromagnetic-ferroelectric thin-film heterostructures. In contrast to conventional driving mechanisms where MDW motion is induced directly by magnetic fields or electric currents, MDW motion arises here as a result of strong pinning of MDWs onto ferroelectric domain walls (FDWs) via local strain coupling. By performing extensive micromagnetic simulations, we find several dynamical regimes, including instabilities such as spin wave emission and complex transformations of the MDW structure. In all cases, th…
Eu modified Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3 (NBT) was investigated for electric-field induced Eu+3 photoluminescence (PL) and structural changes. Detailed analysis revealed that below a critical Eu composition electric field irreversibly suppresses the structural heterogeneity inherent of the host matrix NBT and brings about a long range ferroelectric state with rhombohedral (R3c) distortion. PL study revealed that structural disorder on the nano-scale opens new channels of radiative transitions which can be suppressed by electric field. This study suggests that Eu+3 luminescence can be used to probe the relat…
Electric-field control of spin-dependent properties has become one of the most attractive phenomena in modern materials research due the promise of new device functionalities. One of the paradigms in this approach is to electrically toggle the spin polarization of carriers injected into a semiconductor using ferroelectric polarization as a control parameter. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we explore the effect of ferroelectric polarization of electron-doped BaTiO3 (n-BaTiO3) on the spin-polarized transmission across the SrRuO3/n-BaTiO3 (001) interface. Our study reveal…
The phonon dispersion curves of cubic BaTiO_3 have been computed within a first-principles approach and the results compared to the experimental data. The curves obtained are very similar to those reported for KNbO_3 by Yu and Krakauer [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 4067 (1995)]. They reveal that correlated atomic displacements along <100> chains are at the origin of the ferroelectric instability. A simplified model illustrates that spontaneous collective displacements will occur when a dozen of aligned atoms are coupled. The longitudinal interatomic force constant between nearest neighbour Ti and O at…
We describe ferroelectric thin films with circular electrodes and develop a thermodynamic theory that explains previously mysterious experiments. It is found to be especially useful for restricted geometries such as microstructures for which boundary conditions are well known to play an important role in ferroelectric properties. We have explored a new switching mechanism, which consists of an inhomogeneous rotational motion of the polarization and leads to an extended vortex state. The vortex appearance exhibits characteristic properties of a first-order field-induced phase transition: three …
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) consisting of tunable dielectric layers are utilized to investigate interfacial transport processes. Large changes in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature are observed in FE-FETs in conjunction with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. The devices offer a test bed to evaluate specific effects of polarization on the electrical processes. FE-FETs have dominant contributions from polarization-fluctuation rather than static dipolar disorder prevalent in high k paraelectric dielectric-based FETs. Additionally, photo-excitatio…
We report the polarization, displacement current and leakage current behavior of a trivalent nonpolar cation Al cation substituted lead free ferroelectric NBT-BT electroceramics with tetragonal phase and P4mm space group symmetry. Nearly three orders of magnitude decrease in leakage current were observed under electrical poling, which significantly improves microstructure, polarization, and displacement current. Effective poling neutralizes the domain pinning, traps charges at grain boundaries and fills oxygen vacancies with free charge carriers in matrix, thus saturated macroscopic polarizati…
Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) couple the direction of their spontaneous electric polarization to the direction of tilt of their optic axis. Consequently, reversal of the electric polarization by an electric field gives rise to an immediate and lasting optical response when an appropriately aligned FLC is observed between crossed polarizers, with one field direction yielding a dark image, and the opposite direction yielding a bright image. Here this peculiar electro-optic response is used to image, with high optical contrast, 180° ferroelectric domains in a crystalline substrate of magne…
We describe the directional growth of ferroelectric domains in a multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film, which was grown epitaxially on a vicinal (001) SrTiO3 substrate. A detailed structural analysis of the film shows that a strain gradient, which can create a symmetry breaking in a ferroelectric double well potential, causes ferroelectric domains to grow with preferred directionality under the influence of an electric field. Our results suggest the possibility of controlling the direction of domain growth with an electric field by imposing constraints on ferroelectric films, such as a strain gradient…
We investigate the quantum-mechanical localization of protonated and deterated isotopes in the symmetric low-barrier hydrogen-bonds of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals in the paraelectric phase. The spatial density distributions of these hydrogen atoms are suspected to be responsible for the surprisingly large isotope effect observed for the ferroelectric phase transition in KDP. We employ ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulations to obtain the nuclear real-space and momentum-space densities n(R) and n(k) of protons and deuterons, which are compared to experimental Ne…
The size effect on pyroelectric response of ferroelectric nanowires and nanotubes is analyzed. The pyroelectric coefficient strongly increases with the wire radius decrease and diverges at critical radius Rcr corresponding to the size-driven transition into paraelectric phase. Size-driven enhancement of pyroelectric coupling leads to the giant pyroelectric current and voltage generation by the polarized ferroelectric nanoparticles in response to the temperature fluctuation. The maximum efficiency of the pyroelectric energy harvesting and bolometric detection is derived, and is shown to approac…
Electric Scanning Probe Microscopies are used to characterize the surface behavior of ferroelectric materials. The effects of local charge density on the chemistry and physics of ferroelectric surfaces are investigated. The kinetics and thermodynamics parameters of adsorption are assessed by variable temperature Scanning Surface Potential Microscopy. Contrast formation mechanism of Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) is analyzed in detail, and the contributions of electroelastic constants of the material to response amplitude are determined. The effect of experimental conditions including ind…
We present first-principles total-energy calculations of (001) surfaces of SrTiO3. Both SrO-terminated and TiO2-terminated surfaces are considered, and the results are compared with previous calculations for BaTiO3 surfaces. The major differences are in the details of the relaxed surface structures. Our calculations argue against the existence of a large ferroelectric relaxation in the surface layer, as had been previously proposed. We do find some indications of a weak surface ferroelectric instability, but so weak as to be easily destroyed by thermal fluctuations except perhaps at quite low …
Polar metals are rare because free carriers in metals screen electrostatic potential and eliminate internal dipoles. Degenerate doped ferroelectrics may create an approximate polar metallic phase. We use first-principles calculations to investigate $n$-doped LiNbO$_3$-type oxides (LiNbO$_3$ as the prototype) and compare to widely studied perovskite oxides (BaTiO$_3$ as the prototype). In the rigid-band approximation, substantial polar displacements in $n$-doped LiNbO$_3$ persist even at 0.3 $e$/f.u. ($\simeq$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$), while polar displacements in $n$-doped BaTiO$_3$ quickly get su…
Description of domains switching processes in crystalline ferroelectrics by means of relaxation type equations with account of variable external electric field is proposed. Exact solution of these equations in closed analytical form at arbitrary dependence of electric field on time is obtained.
