We observe that nonzero Gromov-Witten invariants with marked point constraints in a closed symplectic manifold imply restrictions on the homology classes that can be represented by contact hypersurfaces. As a special case, contact hypersurfaces must always separate if the symplectic manifold is uniruled. This removes a superfluous assumption in a result of G. Lu, thus implying that all contact manifolds that embed as contact type hypersurfaces into uniruled symplectic manifolds satisfy the Weinstein conjecture. We prove the main result using the Cieliebak-Mohnke approach to defining Gromov-Witten invariants via Donaldson hypersurfaces, thus no semipositivity or virtual moduli cycles are required.
We develop criteria for affine varieties to admit uniruled subvarieties of certain dimensions. The measurements are from long exact sequences of versions of symplectic cohomology, which is a Hamiltonian Floer theory for some open symplectic manifolds including affine varieties. Symplectic cohomology is hard to compute, in general. However, certain vanishing and invariance properties of symplectic cohomology can be used to prove that our criteria for finding uniruled subvarieties hold in some cases. We provide applications of the criteria in birational geometry of log pairs in the direction of …
We show that if a semipositive symplectic manifold $M^{2n}$ is Steenrod uniruled, in the sense that the quantum Steenrod power of the point class does not agree with its classical Steenrod power for any prime, then the (rational) quantum product on $M$ is deformed. This bridges the gap between the recent advances towards the Chance-McDuff conjecture utilizing quantum Steenrod operations, and the natural formulation of the Chance-McDuff conjecture in terms of rational Gromov-Witten theory.
We introduce symplectic Calabi-Yau caps to obtain new obstructions to exact fillings. In particular, it implies that any exact filling of the standard unit cotangent bundle of a hyperbolic surface has vanishing first Chern class and has the same integral homology and intersection form as its disk cotangent bundle. This gives evidence to a conjecture that all of its exact fillings are diffeomorphic to the disk cotangent bundle. As a result, we also obtain the first infinitely family of Stein fillable contact 3-manifolds with uniform bounds on the Betti numbers of its exact fillings but admittin…
Let $\sf X$ be a symplectic orbifold groupoid with $\sf S$ being a symplectic sub-orbifold groupoid, and $\sf X_{\mathfrak a}$ be the weight-$\mathfrak a$ blowup of $\sf X$ along $\sf S$ with $\sf Z$ being the corresponding exceptional divisor. We show that there is a weighted blowup correspondence between some certain absolute orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of $\sf X$ relative to $\sf S$ and some certain relative orbifold Gromov--Witten invariants of the pair $(\sf X_{\mathfrak a}|Z)$. As an application, we prove that the symplectic uniruledness of symplectic orbifold groupoids is a weigh…
In this note we study the systoles of convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ invariant under an anti-symplectic involution. We investigate a uniform upper bound of the ratio between the systole and the symmetric systole of the hypersurfaces using symplectic capacities from Floer theory. We discuss various concrete examples in which the ratio can be understood explicitly.
We consider exact fillings with vanishing first Chern class of asymptotically dynamically convex (ADC) manifolds. We construct two structure maps on the positive symplectic cohomology and prove that they are independent of the filling for ADC manifolds. The invariance of the structure maps implies that the vanishing of symplectic cohomology and the existence of symplectic dilations are properties independent of the filling for ADC manifolds. Using them, various topological applications on symplectic fillings are obtained, including the uniqueness of diffeomorphism types of fillings for many co…
In 2002 Polterovich has notably established that on closed aspherical symplectic manifolds, Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of finite order, which we call Hamiltonian torsion, must in fact be trivial. In this paper we prove the first higher-dimensional Hamiltonian no-torsion theorems beyond the symplectically aspherical case. We start by showing that closed symplectic Calabi-Yau and negative monotone symplectic manifolds do not admit Hamiltonian torsion. Going still beyond topological constraints, we prove that every closed positive monotone symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ admitting Hamiltonian torsio…
We compute the Poisson cohomology of a class of Poisson manifolds that are symplectic away from a collection $D$ of hypersurfaces. These Poisson structures induce a generalization of symplectic and cosymplectic structures, which we call a k-cosymplectic structure, on the intersection of hypersurfaces in $D$.
Given a $G$-toric, folded-symplectic manifold with co-orientable folding hypersurface, we show that its orbit space is naturally a manifold with corners $W$ equipped with a smooth map $ψ: W \to \frak{g}^*$, where $\frak{g}^*$ is the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus, $G$. The map $ψ$ has fold singularities at points in the image of the folding hypersurface under the quotient map to $W$ and it is a unimodular local embedding away from these points. Thus, to every $G$-toric, folded-symplectic manifold we can associate its orbit space data $ψ:W \to \frak{g}^*$, a unimodular map with folds. We …
Suppose $X^{N}$ is a closed oriented manifold, $α\in H^*(X;\mathbb{R})$ is a cohomology class, and $Z \in H_{N-k}(X)$ is an integral homology class. We ask the following question: is there an oriented embedded submanifold $Y^{N-k} \subset X$ with homology class $Z$ such that $α|_Y = 0 \in H^*(Y;\mathbb{R})$? In this article, we provide a family of computable obstructions to the existence of such 'exact' submanifolds in a given homology class which arise from studying formal deformations of the de Rham complex. In the final section, we apply these obstructions to prove that the following symple…
We show that positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology is a contact invariant for a subclass of contact manifolds which are boundaries of Liouville domains. In nice cases, when the set of Conley-Zehnder indices of all good periodic Reeb orbits on the boundary of the Liouville domain is lacunary, the positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology can be computed; it is generated by those orbits. We prove a "Viterbo functoriality" property: when one Liouville domain is embedded into an other one, there is a morphism (reversing arrows) between their positive $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homo…
In this paper we obtain exact normal forms with functional invariants for local diffeomorphisms, under the action of the symplectomorphism group in the source space. Using these normal forms we obtain exact classification results for the first occurring singularities of Hamiltonian systems with one-sided constraints, a problem posed by R. B. Melrose in his studies of glancing hypersurfaces.
In this paper, we calculate Hörmander index in the finite-dimensional case. Then we use the result to give some iteration inequalities, and prove almost existence of mean indices for given complete autonomous Hamiltonian system on compact symplectic manifold with symplectic trivial tangent bundle and given autonomous Hamiltonian system on regular compact energy hypersurface of symplectic manifold with symplectic trivial tangent bundle.
We investigate leaf-wise intersection points on hypersurfaces of contact type in monotone symplectic manifolds. We show that monotone Floer-essential Lagrangians detect periodic leaf-wise intersection points in hypersurfaces of contact type whose Reeb flow is Zoll. Examples include the prequantization bundles appearing in monotone toric negative line bundles. Generalizing, we prove the existence of leaf-wise intersection points for certain annulus subbundles in weak+-monotone negative line bundles, not necessarily toric. The proofs combine reduced symplectic cohomology with the original method…
We prove that any symplectic Fano $6$-manifold $M$ with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action is simply connected and satisfies $c_1 c_2(M)=24$. This is done by showing that the fixed submanifold $M_{\min}\subseteq M$ on which the Hamiltonian attains its minimum is diffeomorphic to either a del Pezzo surface, a $2$-sphere or a point. In the case when $\dim(M_{\min})=4$, we use the fact that symplectic Fano $4$-manifolds are symplectomorphic to del Pezzo surfaces. The case when $\dim(M_{\min})=2$ involves a study of $6$-dimensional Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds with $M_{\min}$ diffeomorphic to a surface of …
In this note we prove that if a closed monotone symplectic manifold admits a Hamiltonian pseudo-rotation, which may be degenerate, then the quantum Steenrod square of the cohomology class Poincaré dual to the point must be deformed. This result gives restrictions on the existence of pseudo-rotations, implying a form of uniruledness by pseudo-holomorphic spheres, and generalizes a recent result of the author. The new component in the proof consists in an elementary calculation with capped periodic orbits.
We prove that symplectic homeomorphisms, in the sense of the celebrated Gromov-Eliashberg Theorem, preserve coisotropic submanifolds and their characteristic foliations. This result generalizes the Gromov-Eliashberg Theorem and demonstrates that previous rigidity results (on Lagrangians by Laudenbach-Sikorav, and on characteristics of hypersurfaces by Opshtein) are manifestations of a single rigidity phenomenon. To prove the above, we establish a C^0-dynamical property of coisotropic submanifolds which generalizes a foundational theorem in C^0-Hamiltonian dynamics: Uniqueness of generators for…

Motivated by observations in physics, mirror symmetry is the concept that certain manifolds come in pairs $X$ and $Y$ such that the complex geometry on $X$ mirrors the symplectic geometry on $Y$. It allows one to deduce symplectic information about $Y$ from known complex properties of $X$. Strominger-Yau-Zaslow arXiv:hep-th/9606040 described how such pairs arise geometrically as torus fibrations with the same base and related fibers, known as SYZ mirror symmetry. Kontsevich arXiv:alg-geom/9411018 conjectured that a complex invariant on $X$ (the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves) sho…
