We theoretically study current dynamics of graphene nanoribbons subject to bias dc and ac driven fields. We showed that graphene nanoribbons exhibit negative high-harmonic differential conductivity. Negative differential conductivity appears when bias electric filed is in the neighborhood of applied ac filed amplitude. We also observe both even and odd high-harmonic negative differential conductivity at wave mixing of two commensurate frequencies. The even harmonics are more pronounced than the odd harmonics. A possible use of the present method for generating terahertz frequencies at even harmonics in graphene is suggested.
We investigated the reduction of the spin stiffness and the appearance of the spiral spin density waves when the electric field is applied on the zigzag graphene nanoribbons for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic edge states. For that purpose, we exploited the generalized Bloch theorem combined with a constraint method to keep the direction of the magnetic moment of the carbon atom at the edges. We found that the ground state of ferromagnetic configuration is unstable and leads to the spiral ground state while the ground state of the antiferromagnetic configuration is robust. We also show…
The magneto-optical response of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), including excitonic effects, is studied using a nanoribbon geometry. We compute the diagonal optical conductivity and the Hall conductivity. Comparing the excitonic optical Hall conductivity to results obtained in the independent particle approximation, we find an increase in the amplitude corresponding to one order of magnitude when excitonic effects are included. The Hall conductivities are used to calculate Faraday rotation spectra for MoS2 and WSe2. Finally, we have also calculated the diamagnetic shift of t…
The thermal conductivity of low-dimensional materials and graphene nanoribbons in particular, is limited by the strength of line-edge-roughness scattering. One way to characterize the roughness strength is the dependency of the thermal conductivity on the channel width in the form W^β. Although in the case of electronic transport this dependency is very well studied, resulting in W^6 for nanowires and quantum wells and W^4 for nanoribbons, in the case of phonon transport it is not yet clear what this dependence is. In this work, using lattice dynamics and Non-Equilibrium Greens Function simula…
The discovery of unusual heat conduction properties of graphene has led to a surge of theoretical and experimental studies of phonon transport in two-dimensional material systems. The rapidly developing graphene thermal field spans from theoretical physics to practical engineering applications. In this invited review we outline different theoretical approaches developed for describing phonon transport in graphene and provide comparison with available experimental thermal conductivity data. A special attention is given to analysis of the recent theoretical results for the phonon thermal conduct…
Recent experimental advances [Liu \textit{et al., npj 2D Materials and Applications}, 2019, \textbf{3}, 23] propose the design of graphene nanoribbon spring (GNRS) to substantially enhance the stretchability of pristine graphene. GNRS is a periodic undulating graphene nanoribbon, where undulations are of sinus or half-circles or horseshoe shapes. Besides those, GNRS geometry depends on design parameters, like pitch's length and amplitude, thickness and joining angle. Because of the fact that parametric influence on the resulting physical properties are expensive and complicated to be examined …
The present work carries out molecular dynamics simulations to compute the thermal conductivity of the borophene nanoribbon and the borophene nanotube using the Muller-Plathe approach. We investigate the thermal conductivity of the armchair and zigzag borophenes, and show the strong anisotropic thermal conductivity property of borophene. We compare the results of the borophene nanoribbon and the borophene nanotube, and find the thermal conductivity of the borophene is structure dependent.
Thermal decomposition of vicinal 6H-SiC(0001) surfaces with off-angles toward the $[1\bar{1}00]$ direction results in the appearance of pairs of (0001) macroterraces and $(1\bar{1}0n)$ macrofacets covered with graphene, as follows. A carpet-like carbon layer grows on the surface, covering both the macroterraces and macrofacets; it forms $(6\sqrt{3} \times 6\sqrt{3})$ buffer layer on the former ones, whereas its partial periodic bonding with the SiC steps on the latter ones generates a pseudo-graphene nanoribbon (pseudo-GNR) array. The nanoribbons have a width of 2 nm and are aligned in the $[1…
Proper design and manufacturing thermal bridges based on molecular junctions at the contact between graphene platelets or other thermally conductive nanoparticles would provide a fascinating way to produce efficient heat transport networks for the exploitation in heat management applications. In this work, using Non Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics, we calculated thermal conductance of alkyl chains used as molecular junctions between two graphene nanoribbons, both as covalently bound and Van der Waals interdigitated chains. Effect of chain length, grafting density, temperature and chain interdig…
Kirigami structure, from the macro- to the nanoscale, exhibits distinct and tunable properties from original 2-dimensional sheet by tailoring. In present work, the extreme reduction of the thermal conductivity by tailoring sizes in graphene nanoribbon kirigami (GNR-k) is demonstrated using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the thermal conductivity of GNR-k (around 5.1 Wm-1K-1) is about two orders of magnitude lower than that of the pristine graphene nanoribbon (GNR) (around 151.6 Wm-1K-1), while the minimum value is expected to be approaching zero in extreme …
The electronic and optical properties of nonuniform bilayer graphene nanoribbons are worth investigating as they exhibit rich magnetic quantization. Based on our numerical results, their electronic and optical properties strongly depend on the competition between magnetic quantization, lateral confinement, and stacking configuration. The results of our calculations lead to four categories of magneto-electronic energy spectra, namely monolayer-like, bilayer-like, coexistent, and irregular quasi-Landau-level like. Various types of spectra described in this paper are mainly characterized by unusu…
Understanding phonon scattering by topological defects in graphene is of particular interest for thermal management in graphene-based devices. We present a study that quantifies the roles of the different mechanisms governing defect phonon scattering by comparing the effects of ten different defect structures using molecular dynamics. Our results show that phonon scattering is mainly influenced by mass density difference, with general trends governed by the defect formation energy and typical softening behaviors in the phonon density of state. The phonon scattering cross-section is found to be…
Molecular wires are essential components for future nanoscale electronics. However, the preparation of individual long conductive molecules is still a challenge. MMX metal-organic polymers are quasi-one-dimensional sequences of single halide atoms (X) bridging subunits with two metal ions (MM) connected by organic ligands. They are excellent electrical conductors as bulk macroscopic crystals and as nanoribbons. However, according to theoretical calculations, the electrical conductance found in the experiments should be even higher. Here we demonstrate a novel and simple drop-casting procedure …

Following the emergence of many novel two-dimensional (2-D) materials beyond graphene, interest has grown in exploring implications for fundamental physics and practical applications, ranging from electronics, photonics, phononics, to thermal management and energy storage. In this Colloquium, we first summarize and compare the phonon properties, such as phonon dispersion and relaxation time, of pristine 2-D materials with single layer graphene to understand the role of crystal structure and dimension on thermal conductivity. We then compare the phonon properties, contrasting idealized 2-D crys…
