We present high angular resolution observations of the Class 0 protostar IRAM04191+1522, using the Submillimeter Array (SMA). The SMA 1.3 mm continuum images reveal within IRAM04191+1522 two distinct sources with an angular separation of 7.8\,$\pm$\,0.2$"$. The two continuum sources are located in the southeast-northwest direction, with total gas masses of about 0.011 M_sun and about 0.005 M_sun, respectively. The southeastern source, associated with an infrared source seen in the Spitzer images, is the well-known Class 0 protostar with a bolometric luminosity of about 0.08 L_sun. The newly-discovered northwestern continuum source is not visible in the Spitzer images at wavelengths from 3.6 to 70 micron, and has an extremely low bolometric luminosity (< 0.03 L_sun). Complementary IRAM N2H+(1-0) data that probe the dense gas in the common envelope suggest that the two sources were formed through the rotational fragmentation of an elongated dense core. Furthermore, comparisons between IRAM04191+1522 and other protostars suggest that most cores with binary systems formed therein have ratios of rotational energy to gravitational energy $β_{\rm rot}$ > 1%. This is consistent with theoretical simulations and indicates that the level of rotational energy in a dense core plays an important role in the fragmentation process.

We identify a likely member of the NGC 752 open cluster (based on Gaia DR2 proper motions and parallax) having photometry consistent with being a white dwarf and a relatively low-mass main sequence star. If confirmed, this would be the first white dwarf known in this nearby cluster, and the brightest.
I report my discovery of the large-amplitude Algol-type eclipsing binary system which was initially added to the AAVSO International Variable Star Index (VSX) under the designation of Romanov V20. I describe selection criteria for searching for variability among other stars, the search of photometric data from several sky surveys, and my observations using remote telescopes, and the analysis of the data in the VStar software. I find the orbital period, eclipse duration, and magnitude range in Johnson B, V and Sloan g, r, i bands for primary and secondary eclipses.
When observing the transiting extrasolar planets, we discovered a new W UMa type binary GSC 03553-00845. Following observation was carried out using the 1m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University. Complete BVR light curves were determined. Using the W-D program, we analyzed the light curves. Photometric solution reveals that GSC 03553-00845 is a W-subtype W UMa type binary with a mass ratio of q=2.904, it is an overcontact binary system by a contact degree of f=29.5% with a small temperature difference between the components (ΔT=206 K indicating a good thermal contact between th…
The interior physics of stars is currently not well constrained for early-type stars. This is particularly pertinent for multiple systems as binary interaction becomes more prevalent for more massive stars, which strongly affects their evolution. High-precision photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission offers the opportunity to remedy the dearth of observations of pulsating stars that show evidence of binary interaction, specifically pulsating mass-accreting components of semi-detached Algol-type eclipsing binary (oEA) systems. We present the TESS light curve of …
We present the first evidence on the $δ$~Sct type pulsations of the primary components of three eclipsing binaries IQ CMa, AW Men and W Vol in the TESS field. A comprehensive investigation of the binary properties is conducted. The light curves of the systems are analysed and the frequency analyses are performed to residual data. The systems are compared to the binaries of the same morphological types, and the primaries are examined in contrast to the $δ$~Sct type pulsators. The results show that the systems are oscillating eclipsing Algol-type systems.
We present the first evidence for the pulsations of primary components of four eclipsing binary systems. The TESS light curves of the targets are analyzed, the light and the absolute parameters are derived. Fourier analyses are applied to the residual data subtracted from the binary models to reveal the pulsational characteristics of the primaries. The components of the systems are compared to well-known binary systems of the same morphological type. The types of pulsational classes for the primaries are also discussed. Results show that CPD-30 740 and V1637 Ori are oscillating eclipsing Algol…
V453 Cyg is an eclipsing binary containing 14 Msun and 11 Msun stars in an eccentric short-period orbit. We have discovered $β$ Cep-type pulsations in this system using TESS data. We identify seven significant pulsation frequencies, between 2.37 and 10.51 d$^{-1}$, in the primary star. These include six frequencies which are separated by yet significantly offset from harmonics of the orbital frequency, indicating they are tidally-perturbed modes. We have determined the physical properties of the system to high precision: V453 Cyg A is the first $β$ Cep pulsator with a precise mass measurement.…
When observing the blazars, we identified a new eclipsing binary GSC 03517-00663. The light curves of GSC 03517-00663 are typical EW-type light curves. Based on the observation using the 1m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University, complete VRI light curves were determined. Then, we analyzed the multiple light curves using the W-D program. It is found that GSC 03517-00663 has a mass ratio of q=0.164 and a contact degree of f=69.2%. GSC 03517-00663 is a deep, low mass ratio overcontact binary. The light curves of GSC 03517-00663 show strong O'Connell effect, it was explained by em…
We report the discovery of a surprising binary configuration of the double-mode Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 pulsating in the first (P_1=0.690d) and second overtone (P_2=0.556d) modes. The orbital period (P_orb=59d) of the system is five times shorter than the shortest known to date (310d) for a binary Cepheid. The Cepheid itself is also the shortest-period one ever found in a binary system and the first double-mode Cepheid in a spectroscopically double-lined binary. OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 is most probably on its first crossing through the instability strip, as inferred from both its short period and …
Whether planetary nebulae (PNe) are predominantly the product of binary stellar evolution as some population synthesis models (PSM) suggest remains an open question. Around 50 short period binary central stars ($P\sim1$ d) are known, but with only four with measured orbital periods over 10 d, our knowledge is severely incomplete. Here we report on the first discovery from a systematic SALT HRS survey for long period binary central stars. We find a 142 d orbital period from radial velocities of the central star of NGC~1360, HIP~16566. NGC~1360 appears to be the product of common-envelope (CE) e…
We report the discovery of a possible symbiotic star, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The object under consideration here, designated as RP 870, was detected during the course of a comprehensive H$α$ survey of the LMC by Reid & Parker (2012). The spectrum of RP 870 showed high ionization emission lines of He I, He II and [O III] and molecular absorption bands of TiO $λ$$λ$6180, 7100. The collective signatures of a hot component (high excitation/ionization lines) and of a cool component (TiO molecular bands) are seen in RP 870, from which we propose it as a symbiotic star. Since known symb…
Close binary central stars of planetary nebulae are key in constraining the poorly-understood common-envelope phase of evolution, which in turn is critical in understanding the formation of a wide-range of astrophysical phenomena (including cataclysmic variables, low-mass X-ray binaries and supernovae type Ia). Here, I present the results of our on-going, targeted search for close-binaries in planetary nebulae which has led to the discovery of more than 10 new central binaries in just the last few years (almost the same as the total discovered during the 1980s and 1990s together). This success…
We present the results of 938 speckle measures of double stars and suspected double stars drawn mainly from the Hipparcos Catalogue, as well as 208 observations where no companion was noted. One hundred fourteen pairs have been resolved for the first time. The data were obtained during four observing runs in 2014 using the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI) at Lowell Observatory's Discovery Channel Telescope. The measurement precision obtained when comparing to ephemeris positions of binaries with very well-known orbits is generally less than 2 mas in separation and 0.5 degrees in p…
Binary systems containing a magnetic white dwarf and a main-sequence star are considered extremely rare, perhaps non-existent. In the course of a search of magnetic fields in high-mass white dwarfs we have discovered a Sirius-like wide binary system composed of a main-sequence G0 star and a $M\sim 1.1\,M_\odot$ white dwarf with a huge (hundreds of MG) magnetic field. This star, WDS J03038+0608B, shows a circular polarisation amplitude of 5% in the continuum, with no evidence of variability in a 1d time-scale, little or no linear polarisation in the blue part of the spectrum, and about 2% linea…
I present the discovery of the first wide M + L extreme subdwarf binary system Gaia J0452$-$36AB. The binary is located at a distance of 137.27$^{+0.68}_{-0.67}$ pc with a projected separation of 15828$\pm$78 au. I classified Gaia J0452$-$36AB as esdM1 and esdL0 subdwarfs, respectively. Gaia J0452$-$36AB have typical halo kinematics, metallicity of [Fe/H] $\approx -1.4$, and temperature of $\sim$ 3550 and 2600 K, respectively. Gaia J0452$-$36AB is a pair of very low-mass stars with masses of 0.151$^{+0.029}_{-0.019}$ and 0.0855$^{+0.0014}_{-0.0010}$ M$_{\odot}$, and is a gravitationally bound …
Period and period change measurements for 143 SuperWASP eclipsing binary candidates near the short-period limit and discovery of a doubly eclipsing quadruple system
We report the discovery of 14 low-mass binary systems containing mid-M to mid-L dwarf companions with separations larger than 250 AU. We also report the independent discovery of 9 other systems with similar characteristics that were recently discovered in other studies. We have identified these systems by searching for common proper motion sources in the vicinity of known high proper motion stars, based on a cross-correlation of wide area near-infrared surveys (2MASS, SDSS, and SIMP). An astrometric follow-up, for common proper motion confirmation, was made with SIMON and/or CPAPIR at the OMM …
We report the detection of stellar eclipses in the LP 661-13 system. We present the discovery and characterization of this system, including high resolution spectroscopic radial velocities and a photometric solution spanning two observing seasons. LP 661-13 is a low mass binary system with an orbital period of $4.7043512^{+0.0000013}_{-0.0000010}$ days at a distance of $24.9 \pm 1.3$ parsecs. LP 661-13A is a $0.30795 \pm 0.00084$ $M_\odot$ star while LP 661-13B is a $0.19400 \pm 0.00034$ $M_\odot$ star. The radius of each component is $0.3226 \pm 0.0033$ $R_\odot$ and $0.2174 \pm 0.0023$ $R_\o…
We report on the MASTER Global Robotic Net discovery of an eclipsing binary, MASTER OT J095310.04+335352.8, previously known as unremarkable star TYC 2505-672-1, which displays extreme orbital parameters. The orbital period P=69.1 yr is more than 2.5 times longer than that of epsilon-Aurigae, which is the previous record holder. The light curve is characterized by an extremely deep total eclipse with a depth of more than 4.5 mag, which is symmetrically shaped and has a total duration of 3.5 yrs. The eclipse is essentially gray. The spectra acquired with the Russian 6 m BTA telescope both at mi…
We searched the SuperWASP archive for objects displaying multiply periodic photometric variations. Specifically we sought evidence for eclipsing binary stars displaying a further non-harmonically related signal in their power spectra. The object SWASP J050634.16-353648.4 is identified as a relatively bright (V ~ 11.5) semi-detached eclipsing binary with a 5.104 d orbital period that displays coherent pulsations with a semi-amplitude of 65 mmag at a frequency of 13.45 per day. Follow-up radial velocity spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope confirmed the binary nature of the sys…
GG Carinae is a binary whose primary component is a B[e] supergiant. Using photometric data from TESS, ASAS, OMC, and ASAS-SN, and spectroscopic data from the Global Jet Watch to study visible He\,I, Fe\,II and Si\,II emission lines, we investigate the short-period variations which are exhibited in GG Car. We find a hitherto neglected periodicity of $1.583156\pm0.0002$\,days that is present in both its photometry and the radial velocities of its emission lines, alongside variability at the well-established $\sim$31-day orbital period. We find that the amplitudes of the shorter-period variation…
The shaping of various morphological features of planetary nebulae (PNe) is increasingly linked to the role of binary central stars. Identifying a binary within a PN offers a powerful tool with which to directly investigate the formation mechanisms behind these features. The Etched Hourglass Nebula, MyCn 18, is the archetype for several binary-linked morphological features, yet it has no identified binary nucleus. It has the fastest jets seen in a PN of 630 km s$^{-1}$, a central star position offset from the nebula centre, and a bipolar nebula with a very narrow waist. Here we report on the S…
The Kepler K2 mission now makes it possible to find and study a wider variety of eclipsing binary stars than has been possible to-date, particularly long-period systems with narrow eclipses. Our aim is to characterise eclipsing binary stars observed by the Kepler K2 mission with orbital periods longer than $P\approx 5.5$ days. The $ellc$ binary star model has been used to determine the geometry of eclipsing binary systems in Kepler K2 campaigns 1, 2 and 3. The nature of the stars in each binary is estimated by comparison to stellar evolution tracks in the effective temperature - mean stellar d…
We report the discovery of OGLE-UCXB-01, a 12.8 minute variable object located in the central field of Galactic bulge globular cluster Djorg 2. The presence of frequent, short-duration brightenings at such an ultrashort period in long-term OGLE photometry together with the blue color of the object in Hubble Space Telescope images and the detection of moderately hard X-rays by Chandra observatory point to an ultracompact X-ray binary system. The observed fast period decrease makes the system a particularly interesting target for gravitational-wave detectors such as the planned Laser Interferome…
Class I protostars are a bridge between Class 0 protostars, and Class II protoplanetary disks. Recent studies show gaps and rings in the dust distribution of disks younger than 1 Myr, suggesting that planet formation may start already at the Class I stage. To understand what chemistry planets will inherit, it is crucial to characterize the chemistry of Class I sources and to investigate how chemical complexity evolves from Class 0 protostars to protoplanetary disks. The goal is twofold: to obtain a census of the molecular complexity in a sample of four Class I protostars, and to compare it wit…
We report the discovery of the first likely black hole in a non-interacting binary system with a field red giant. By combining radial velocity measurements from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) with photometric variability data from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), we identified the bright rapidly-rotating giant 2MASS J05215658+4359220 as a binary system with a massive unseen companion. Subsequent radial velocity measurements reveal a system with an orbital period of 83 days and near-zero eccentricity. The photometric variability period …
We report the discovery of two detached double white dwarf (WD) binaries, SDSS J082239.546+304857.19 and SDSS J104336.275+055149.90, with orbital periods of 40 and 46 min, respectively. The 40 min system is eclipsing; it is composed of a 0.30 Msun and a 0.52 Msun WD. The 46 min system is a likely LISA verification binary. The short 20 Myr and ~34 Myr gravitational wave merger times of the two binaries imply that many more such systems have formed and merged over the age of the Milky Way. We update the estimated Milky Way He+CO WD binary merger rate and affirm our previously published result: H…
We present the discovery of NGTS J214358.5-380102, an eccentric M-dwarf binary discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey. The system period of 7.618 days is greater than many known eclipsing M-dwarf binary systems. Its orbital eccentricity of $0.323^{+0.0014}_{-0.0037}$, is large relative to the period and semi-major axis of the binary. Global modelling of photometry and radial velocities indicate stellar masses of $M_A$=$0.426 ^{+0.0056}_{-0.0049}$, $M_B$=$0.455 ^{+0.0058}_{-0.0052}$ and stellar radii $R_A$=$0.461 ^{+0.038}_{-0.025}$ $R_B$=$0.411 ^{+0.027}_{-0.039}$, respectively. Comp…
We present the confirmation of SDSS J222551.65+001637.7AB as a closely separated, resolved, white dwarf-brown dwarf binary. We have obtained spectroscopy from GNIRS and seeing-limited $K_s$-band imaging from NIRI on Gemini North. The target is spatially resolved into its constituent components: a 10926$ \pm$ 246 K white dwarf, with log $g = 8.214 \pm 0.168$ and a mass of 0.66$^{+0.11}_{-0.06}$ M$_{\odot}$, and an L4 brown dwarf companion, which are separated by $0.9498 \pm 0.0022$". We derive the fundamental properties of the companion from the Sonora-Bobcat evolutionary models, finding a mass…
Very fast novae are novae which evolve exceptionally quickly (on timescales of only days). Due to their rapid evolution, very fast novae are challenging to detect and study, especially at early times. Here we report the discovery, which was made as part of our Transient UV Objects project, of a probable very fast nova in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300. We detected the rise to the peak (which is rarely observed for very fast novae) in the near-ultraviolet (NUV), with the first detection just ~2 hours after the eruption started. The peak and early stages of the decay were also observed in UV a…
Many problems in contemporary astrophysics---from understanding the formation of black holes to untangling the chemical evolution of galaxies---rely on knowledge about binary stars. This, in turn, depends on discovery and characterization of binary companions for large numbers of different kinds of stars in different chemical and dynamical environments. Current stellar spectroscopic surveys observe hundreds of thousands to millions of stars with (typically) few observational epochs, which allows binary discovery but makes orbital characterization challenging. We use a custom Monte Carlo sample…
