We report on the MASTER Global Robotic Net discovery of an eclipsing binary, MASTER OT J095310.04+335352.8, previously known as unremarkable star TYC 2505-672-1, which displays extreme orbital parameters. The orbital period P=69.1 yr is more than 2.5 times longer than that of epsilon-Aurigae, which is the previous record holder. The light curve is characterized by an extremely deep total eclipse with a depth of more than 4.5 mag, which is symmetrically shaped and has a total duration of 3.5 yrs. The eclipse is essentially gray. The spectra acquired with the Russian 6 m BTA telescope both at minimum and maximum light mainly correspond to an M0-1III--type red giant, but the spectra taken at the bottom of eclipse show small traces of a sufficiently hot source. The observed properties of this system can be better explained as the red giant eclipsed by a large cloud (the disk) of small particles surrounding the invisible secondary companion.
We present the first evidence for the binarity of four targets in the TESS field. The temperatures are estimated by SED analysis and the orbital periods are determined. The TESS light curves of the systems are analysed and the orbital and the absolute parameters are derived. The targets are also compared to well-studied binary systems with the same morphological type and their evolutionary states are discussed. Our results indicate that the stars belong to the class of eclipsing detached binary systems.
Aims: The analysis of combined photometry and spectroscopy of eccentric eclipsing binary systems facilitates the derivation of precise values for the parameters of the component stars and their orbits, thereby providing stringent tests of theories of stellar structure and evolution. In this paper two eccentric eclipsing binary systems, TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1, are studied in detail for the first time. Methods: Radial velocities were obtained using cross-correlation methods applied to mid-resolution spectra covering almost the entire orbital phase domains of these two systems. TESS p…
We present the first evidence for the pulsations of primary components of four eclipsing binary systems. The TESS light curves of the targets are analyzed, the light and the absolute parameters are derived. Fourier analyses are applied to the residual data subtracted from the binary models to reveal the pulsational characteristics of the primaries. The components of the systems are compared to well-known binary systems of the same morphological type. The types of pulsational classes for the primaries are also discussed. Results show that CPD-30 740 and V1637 Ori are oscillating eclipsing Algol…
A first solution for the eclipsing binary TYC 4481-358-1 has been found by combining the results of BVIc-photometry with known stellar models and stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The binary shows total and annular eclipses in a circular 90-days orbit. Masses, radii and effective temperatures have been derived: about 3.01 Msun, 14.29 Rsun and 4950 K for the giant, and about 2.39 Msun, 2.39 Rsun and 9600 K for the dwarf. The peculiar dwarf is discolored and shows a Teff - passband dependence from 9000 K in the Ic to 9800 K in the B band. The giant is in its final stage of core heliu…
The first multi-colour light curve models and period studies for the totally eclipsing W UMa stars TYC 3700-1384-1, V1511 Her and V1179 Her are presented. All three stars are A-subtype W UMa stars of spectral type F. The light curve solutions show that TYC 3700-1384-1 has a moderately low mass ratio of q = 0.182 +/- 0.001 and a degree of overcontact of f = 49%. For V1179 Her a mass ratio q = 0.153 +/- 0.001 and a degree of overcontact of f = 48% is derived. The solution for V1511 Her is inconclusive, however the mass ratio is expected to be between 0.13 < q < 0.15. The evolutionary status is c…
The orbit and physical parameters of the previously unsolved double-lined eclipsing binary Tyc 5227-1023-1, discovered during the search for RR Lyr variables candidate members of the Aquarius stream, are derived using high resolution échelle spectroscopy and $V$, $i^\prime$ photometry. Synthetic spectral analysis of both components has been performed, yielding metallicity [M/H] = $-0.63 \pm 0.11$ for both stars and the temperature of the secondary which is in close agreement with the one from the orbital solution, while the temperature of the primary is determined from photometry (T$_1 = 6350$…
Multi-color light curves and radial velocities for TYC\,1031\,1262\,1 have been obtained and analyzed. TYC\,1031\,1262\,1 includes a Cepheid with a period of 4.15270$\pm$0.00061 days. The orbital period of the system is about 51.2857$\pm$0.0174 days. The pulsation period indicates a secular period increase with an amount of 2.46$\pm$0.54 min/yr. The observed B, V, and R magnitudes were cleaned for the intrinsic variations of the primary star. The remaining light curves, consisting of eclipses and proximity effects, are obtained and analyzed for orbital parameters. The system consists of two ev…
We present the first detailed investigation of six eclipsing binary systems in the TESS field. The TESS light curves of the targets are analysed by determining the initial effective temperatures via SED fits. The absolute parameters are derived and the systems are compared to well-known binaries of the same type. Results show that CD-58~791, CD-62~1257 and TYC~9356-355-1 are detached binary systems. CD-54~942 and UCAC4~136-007295 are contact binaries while TYC~8508-1413-1 is a semidetached system.
The first BV bands photometric observations and the low-resolution spectrum of the shortest period Am type eclipsing binary TYC 6408-989-1 have been obtained. The stellar atmospheric parameters of the primary star were obtained through the spectral fitting as follows: $T_{eff}=6990\pm117 K$, $\log g=4.25\pm0.26 cm/s^2$, $[Fe/H]=-0.45\pm0.03 dex$. The original spectra obtained by European Southern Observatory (ESO) were processed with IRAF package by us. Based on the ESO blue-violet spectra, TYC 6408-989-1 was concluded as a marginal Am (Am:) star with a spectral type of kA3hF1mA5 IV-V identifi…
Exoplanet transit and Doppler surveys discover many binary stars during their operation that can be used to conduct a variety of ancillary science. Specifically, eclipsing binary stars can be used to study the stellar mass-radius relationship and to test predictions of theoretical stellar evolution models. By cross-referencing 24 binary stars found in the MARVELS Pilot Project with SuperWASP photometry, we find two new eclipsing binaries, TYC 0272-00458-1 and TYC 1422-01328-1, which we use as case studies to develop a general approach to eclipsing binaries in survey data. TYC 0272-00458-1 is a…
Photometric observations for the totally eclipsing binary system TYC 4002-2628-1, were obtained between November 2020 and November 2021. To determine the stellar atmospheric parameters, a spectral image was taken with the 2.16 m telescope at National Astronomical Observatory of China (NAOC). TYC 4002-2628-1 is a low-amplitude (about 0.15 mag for $V$ band), short-period (0.3670495 d), contact eclipsing binary with a total secondary eclipse. Intrinsic light curve variations and the reversal of the O'Connell effect are detected in the light curves, which may be due to spot activity. Based on the …
We present observations of two new single-lined eclipsing binaries, both consisting of an Am star and an M-dwarf, discovered by the Wide Angle Search for Planets transit photometry survey. Using WASP photometry and spectroscopic measurements we find that HD186753B has an orbital period of P=1.9194 days, a mass of M=0.24 +/- 0.02 M_sun and radius of R=0.31 +/- 0.06 R_sun; and that TCY7096-222-1B has an orbital period of P=8.9582 days, a mass between 0.29 and 0.54 M_sun depending on eccentricity and radius of R=0.263+0.02-0.07 R_sun. We find that the Am stars have relatively low rotational veloc…
Eclipsing binary stars are rare and extremely valuable astrophysical laboratories that make possible precise determination of fundamental stellar parameters. Investigation of early-type chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binaries provides important information for understanding the origin and evolutionary context of their anomalous surface chemistry. In this study we discuss observations of eclipse variability in six mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars monitored by the TESS satellite. These discoveries double the number of known eclipsing HgMn stars and yield several interesting objects requiri…
Results of the CCD observations of CzeV404 Her are displayed. During the season of June-August 2014 we detected one outburst and one superoutburst of the star. Clear superhumps with the period of P_sh=0.10472(2) days were observed. The superhump period was decreasing with a high value of P_dot=-2.43(8) x 10^(-4). For 17 eclipses, we calculated an orbital period with the value of P_orb=0.0980203(6) days which indicates that CzeV404 Her belongs to period gap objects and it is the longest orbital period eclipsing SU UMa star. Based on superhump and orbital period determinations, the period excess…
The eclipses in binary stars give precise information of orbital period changes. Goodricke discovered the 2.867 days period in the eclipses of Algol in the year 1783. The irregular orbital period changes of this longest known eclipsing binary continue to puzzle astronomers. The mass transfer between the two members of this binary should cause a long-term increase of the orbital period, but observations over two centuries have not confirmed this effect. Here, we present evidence indicating that the period of Algol was 2.850 days three millenia ago. For religious reasons, the ancient Egyptians h…
WFI J161953.3+031909 was considered to be an eclipsing novalike object in the period gap. Using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) public database, I found that this object is the first eclipsing Z Cam star in the period gap, and is also most likely an ER UMa star with supercycles of 60-80 d. The longest outburst (most likely a superoutburst) comprised 35-46% of the supercycle in the extreme case. If superhumps are confirmed, this becomes the second object showing both ER UMa and Z Cam states after NY Ser. These objects have anomalously high mass-transfer rates despite that they are in the pe…
We present the results of the high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the neglected binary system HD\,194495 (B3\,IV-V+B4\,V). A combined analysis of three different photometric data set ($Tycho$ B$_T$ and V$_T$ photometry, H$_p$-band data of $Hipparcos$ and $V-$band data of ASAS3 photometry) and radial velocities indicates that the system has an orbital period of 4.90494 $\pm$ 0.00005 days and an inclination of 69$\pm$1 degrees. This solution yields masses and radii of $M_{\rm 1}$ = 7.57$\pm$0.08 $M_{\odot}$ and $R_{\rm 1}$ = 5.82$\pm$0.03 $R_{\odot}$ for the primary and $M_{\rm 2}$ = 5…
Results are presented of a five-year project to study the orbital periods of eighteen deeply eclipsing novalike cataclysmic variables, collectively known as SW Sextantis stars, by combining new measurements of eclipse times with published measurements stretching back in some cases over fifty years. While the behaviour of many of these binary systems is consistent with a constant orbital period, it is evident that in several cases this is not true. Although the time span of these observations is relatively short, evidence is emerging that the orbital periods of some of these stars show cyclical…
We report results from a search for Galactic high-mass eclipsing binaries. The photometric monitoring campaign was performed in Sloan $r$ and $i$ with the robotic twin refractor RoBoTT at the Universitätssternwarte Bochum in Chile and complemented by Johnson $UBV$ data. Comparison with the SIMBAD database reveals 260 variable high-mass stars. Based on well-sampled light curves we discovered 35 new eclipsing high-mass systems and confirm the properties of six previously known systems. For all objects, we provide the first light curves and determine orbital periods through the Lafler-Kinman algo…
In this study we investigate the calibration of surface brightness--color (SBC) relations based solely on eclipsing binary stars. We selected a sample of 35 detached eclipsing binaries with trigonometric parallaxes from Gaia DR1 or Hipparcos, whose absolute dimensions are known with an accuracy better than 3% and that lie within 0.3 kpc from the Sun. For the purpose of this study, we used mostly homogeneous optical and near-infrared photometry based on the Tycho-2 and 2MASS catalogs. We derived geometric angular diameters for all stars in our sample with a precision better than 10%, and for 11…
We report 11 yr of spectroscopic monitoring of the M-type asymptotic giant branch star eta Gem, a semiregular variable and a known spectroscopic binary with a period of 8.2 yr. We combine our radial velocities with others from the literature to provide an improved spectroscopic orbital solution giving a period of 2979 days, which we then use to predict past times of eclipse. We examine archival photometry from amateur variable star observers, and other sources, and find many instances of dimmings that occurred at the right time. This confirms previous indications that the system is eclipsing, …
We report a comprehensive search for hierarchical triple stellar system candidates amongst eclipsing binaries (EB) observed by the CoRoT spacecraft. We calculate and check eclipse timing variation (ETV) diagrams for almost 1500 EBs in an automated manner. We identify five relatively short-period Algol systems for which our combined light curve and complex ETV analyses (including both the light-travel time effect and short-term dynamical third-body perturbations) resulted in consistent third-body solutions. The computed periods of the outer bodies are between 82 and 272 days, (with an alternati…
We report the discovery of a sextuply-eclipsing sextuple star system from TESS data, TIC 168789840, also known as TYC 7037-89-1, the first known sextuple system consisting of three eclipsing binaries. The target was observed in Sectors 4 and 5 during Cycle 1, with lightcurves extracted from TESS Full Frame Image data. It was also previously observed by the WASP survey and ASAS-SN. The system consists of three gravitationally-bound eclipsing binaries in a hierarchical structure of an inner quadruple system with an outer binary subsystem. Follow-up observations from several different observatori…
We report the discovery of a compact, coplanar, quadruply-lined, eclipsing quadruple star system from TESS data, TIC 454140642, also known as TYC 0074-01254-1. The target was first detected in Sector 5 with 30-min cadence in Full-Frame Images and then observed in Sector 32 with 2-min cadence. The light curve exhibits two sets of primary and secondary eclipses with periods of PA = 13.624 days (binary A) and PB = 10.393 days (binary B). Analysis of archival and follow-up data shows clear eclipse-timing variations and divergent radial velocities, indicating dynamical interactions between the two …
The study presents photometric analysis of the completely eclipsing contact binary systems TYC 8351-1081-1 and ASAS J210406-0522.3. TYC 8351-1081-1 is an extremely low mass ratio (q=0.086) system with high degree of contact (f=0.66) while ASAS J210406-0522.3 is found to be in marginal contact (f=0.08) with a relatively low mass ratio of 0.272. There is good thermal contact in both systems with only a small difference in the temperature of the components. The systems have been observed by a number sky surveys over the past 20 years. We compare the light curve solutions from up to three of these…
We present the results of the combined photometric and spectroscopic analysis of a bright (V=9.14), nearby (d=31 pc), late-type detached eclipsing binary AK Fornacis. This P=3.981 d system has not been previously recognised as a double-lined spectroscopic binary, and this is the first full physical model of this unique target. With the FEROS, CORALIE and HARPS spectrographs we collected a number of high-resolution spectra in order to calculate radial velocities of both components of the binary. Measurements were done with our own disentangling procedure and the TODCOR technique, and were later…
Abridged. Our aim is to measure the masses and radii of the stars in a newly-discovered detached eclipsing binary system to a high precision ($\approx$1%), enabling the system to be used for the calibration of free parameters in stellar evolutionary models. Photometry from the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) project was used to identify 1SWASP J063930.33-322404.8 (TYC 7091-888-1, WASP 0369-32 hereafter) as a detached eclipsing binary system with total eclipses and an orbital period of P=11.66 days. Lightcurve parameters for WASP 0639-32 are obtained using the ebop lightcurve model, with s…
2M1938+4603 (KIC 9472174) displays a spectacular light curve dominated by a strong reflection effect and rather shallow, grazing eclipses. The orbital period is 0.126 days, the second longest period yet found for an eclipsing sdB+dM, but still close to the minimum 0.1-d period among such systems. The phase-folded light curve was used to detrend the orbital effects from the dataset, and the resulting amplitude spectrum shows a rich collection of pulsation peaks spanning frequencies from ~50 to 4500 uHz. The presence of a complex pulsation spectrum in both the p-mode and the g-mode regions has n…
We report the discovery with $TESS$ of a third set of eclipses from V994 Herculis (TIC 424508303), previously only known as a doubly-eclipsing system. The key implication of this discovery and our analyses is that V994 Her is the second fully-characterized (2+2) + 2 sextuple system, in which all three binaries eclipse. In this work, we use a combination of ground-based observations and $TESS$ data to analyze the eclipses of binaries A and B in order to update the parameters of the inner quadruple's orbit (with a derived period of 1062 $\pm$ 2d). The eclipses of binary C that were detected in t…
The recently discovered eclipsing binary system TYC 2675-663-1 is a X-ray source, and shows properties in the optical that are similar to the W UMa systems, but are somewhat unusual compared to what is seen in other contact binary systems. The goal of this work is to characterize its properties and investigate its nature by means of detailed photometric and spectroscopic observations. We have performed extensive V-band photometric measurements with the INTEGRAL satellite along with ground-based multi-band photometric observations, as well as high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring from which …
This paper introduces a series of papers aiming to study the dozens of low mass eclipsing binaries (EBLM), with F, G, K primaries, that have been discovered in the course of the WASP survey. Our objects are mostly single-line binaries whose eclipses have been detected by WASP and were initially followed up as potential planetary transit candidates. These have bright primaries, which facilitates spectroscopic observations during transit and allows the study of the spin-orbit distribution of F, G, K+M eclipsing binaries through the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. Here we report on the spin-orbit ang…
We present a determination of precise fundamental physical parameters of twenty detached, double- lined, eclipsing binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) containing G- or early K-type giant stars. Eleven are new systems, the remaining nine are systems already analyzed by our team for which we present updated parameters. The catalogue results from our long-term survey of eclipsing binaries in the Magellanic Clouds suitable for high-precision determination of distances (the Araucaria project). The V-band brightnesses of the systems range from 15.4 mag to 17.7 mag and their orbital peri…
We present fits to the broadband photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 158 eclipsing binaries (EBs) in the Tycho-2 catalog. These EBs were selected because they have highly precise stellar radii, effective temperatures, and in many cases metallicities previously determined in the literature, and thus have bolometric luminosities that are typically good to $\lesssim$ 10%. In most cases the available broadband photometry spans a wavelength range 0.4-10 $μ$m, and in many cases spans 0.15-22 $μ$m. The resulting SED fits, which have only extinction as a free parameter, provide a virtu…
V383Sco was discovered to be an eclipsing binary at the beginning of the XX century. This system has one of the longest orbital periods known (13.5yr) and was initially classified as a zet_Aur-type variable. It was then forgotten for decades. This study provides a detailed look at the V383Sco, using new data obtained around the last eclipse in 2007/8. There was a suspicion that this system could be similar to eclipsing systems with extensive dusty disks like EECep and eps_Aur. This and other, alternative hypotheses are considered. The ASAS-3 VI light curves have been used to examine photometri…
We present TYC 2505-672-1 as a newly discovered and remarkable eclipsing system comprising an M-type red giant that undergoes a ~3.45 year long, near-total eclipse (depth of ~4.5 mag) with a very long period of ~69.1 yr. TYC 2505-672-1 is now the longest-period eclipsing binary system yet discovered, more than twice as long as that of the currently longest-period system, $ε$ Aurigae. We show from analysis of the light curve including both our own data and historical data spanning more than 120 yr and from modeling of the spectral energy distribution, both before and during eclipse, that the re…
The rotation periods of the magnetic Ap stars span five to six orders of magnitude. Period differentiation must have taken place at the pre-main sequence stage, but the physical processes that lead to it remain elusive. The study of Ap stars that have rotation periods of tens to hundreds of years represents a promising avenue to gain additional insight into the origin and evolution of rotation in Ap stars. Historically, almost all the longest period Ap stars known have been found to be strongly magnetic; very few weakly magnetic Ap stars with very long periods have been identified and studied.…
Eclipsing binaries (EBs) provide critical laboratories for empirically testing predictions of theoretical models of stellar structure and evolution. Pre-main-sequence (PMS) EBs are particularly valuable, both due to their rarity and the highly dynamic nature of PMS evolution, such that a dense grid of PMS EBs is required to properly calibrate theoretical PMS models. Analyzing multi-epoch, multi-color light curves for 2400 candidateOrion Nebula Cluster (ONC) members from our Warm Spitzer Exploration Science Program YSOVAR, we have identified 12 stars whose light curves show eclipse features. Fo…

Virtually all binaries consisting of a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion can be classified as either close post-interaction systems (with orbital periods of a few days or less), or wide systems (with periods longer than decades), in which both components have effectively evolved as single stars. Binaries with periods between these two extremes can help constrain common envelope efficiency, or highlight alternative pathways towards the creation of compact binaries. To date such binaries have remained mostly elusive. Here we present three white dwarfs in binaries with evolved subgiant …

We present 2271 radial velocity measurements taken on 118 single-line binary stars, taken over eight years with the CORALIE spectrograph. The binaries consist of F/G/K primaries and M-dwarf secondaries. They were initially discovered photometrically by the WASP planet survey, as their shallow eclipses mimic a hot-Jupiter transit. The observations we present permit a precise characterisation of the binary orbital elements and mass function. With modelling of the primary star this mass function is converted to a mass of the secondary star. In the future, this spectroscopic work will be combined …
We report K2 observations of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable V729 Sgr which covered nearly 80 days in duration. We find five short outbursts and two long outbursts, one of which shows a clear plateau phase in the rise to maximum brightness. The mean time between successive short outbursts is ~10 d while the time between the two long outbursts is ~38 d. The frequency of these outbursts are unprecedented for a CV above the orbital period gap. We find evidence that the mid-point of the eclipse occurs systematically earlier in outburst than in quiescence. During five of the six quiescent epochs…
We report the discovery with TESS of a remarkable quadruple star system with a 2+1+1 configuration. The two unique characteristics of this system are that (i) the inner eclipsing binary (stars Aa and Ab) eclipses the star in the outermost orbit (star C), and (ii) these outer 4th body eclipses last for $\sim$12 days, the longest of any such system known. The three orbital periods are $\sim$3.3 days, $\sim$51 days, and $\sim$2100 days. The extremely long duration of the outer eclipses is due to the fact that star B slows binary A down on the sky relative to star C. We combine TESS photometric da…
The merger of close double white dwarfs (CDWDs) is one of the favourite evolutionary channels for producing Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia). Unfortunately, current theories of the evolution and formation of CDWDs are still poorly constrained and have several serious uncertainties, which affect the predicted SN Ia rates. Moreover, current observational constraints on this evolutionary pathway for SN Ia mainly rely on only 18 double-lined and/or eclipsing CDWDs with measured orbital and stellar parameters for both white dwarfs. In this paper we present the orbital periods and the individual masses of…
Amongst the hydrogen-deficient accreting binaries known as the "AM~CVn stars" are three systems with the shortest known orbital periods: HM Cnc (321 s), V407 Vul (569 s) and ES Cet (620 s). These compact binaries are predicted to be strong sources of persistent gravitational wave radiation. HM Cnc and V407 Vul are undergoing direct impact accretion in which matter transferred from their donor hits the accreting white dwarfs directly. ES Cet, is the longest period of the three and is amongst the most luminous AM CVn stars, but it is not known whether it accretes via a disk or direct impact. ES …
