Using numerical simulations of the magnetised solar photosphere and radiative diagnostics of the simulated photospheric models, we further analyse the physical nature of magnetic photospheric intergranular vortices. We confirm the magnetic nature of the vortices and find that most MHD Umov-Poynting flux is produced by horizontal vortex motions in the magnetised intergranular lanes. In addition, we consider possible ways to directly observe photospheric magnetic vortices using spectropolarimetry. Although horizontal plasma motions cannot be detected in the spectropolarimetric observations of solar disk centre, we find an observational signature of photospheric vortices in simulated observations of Stokes-V amplitude asymmetry close to the solar limb. Potential ways to find the vortices in the observations are discussed.
Observations of the solar photosphere show spatially-compact large-amplitude Doppler velocity events with short lifetimes. In data from the Imaging Magnetograph eXperiment (IMaX) on the first flight of the Sunrise balloon in 2009, events with velocities in excess of 4σ from the mean can be identified in both intergranular downflow lanes and granular upflows. We show that the statistics of such events are consistent with the random superposition of strong convective flows and p-mode coherence patches. Such coincident superposition has implications for the interpretation of acoustic wave sources…
The solar photosphere is filled by a magnetic field which is tangled on scales much smaller than the resolution capability of solar telescopes. This hidden magnetic field can be investigated via the Hanle effect. In 2007 we started a synoptic program to explore if the magnetic flux of the quiet photosphere varies with the solar cycle. For this purpose we applied a differential Hanle effect technique based on observations of scattering polarization in C$_2$ molecular lines around 514.0 nm, taken generally every month. Our results now span almost one complete solar cycle.
Coronal heating is a big question for modern astronomy. Daily measurement of 985 solar spectral irradiances (SSIs) at the spectral intervals 1-39 nm and 116-2416 nm during March 1 2003 to October 28 2017 is utilized to investigate characteristics of solar rotation in the solar atmosphere by means of the Lomb \,-\, Scargle periodogram method to calculate their power spectra. The rotation period of coronal plasma is obtained to be 26.3 days, and that of the solar atmosphere at the bottom of the photosphere modulated by magnetic structures is 27.5 days. Here we report for the first time that unex…
We examine the role of stratification in determining the scale for turbulent anelastic convection. Motivated by the range of scales observed in convection at the solar photosphere, we perform local numerical simulations of convection for a range of density contrasts in large domains. We analyse both the Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics of the convection and demonstrate that increasing the stratification shifts the scale of the most energetic structures in the flow to smaller scales; furthermore, the relative amplitude of vertical to horizontal flows in the convection decreases with increasin…
The velocity distribution of the large and small-scale motion in solar photosphere has been obtained by crossing method based on fitting the observed and calculated equivalent widths as well as the central depths of the spectral lines at the center of the and the limb of the solar disk. We used about 200 Fe I lines. According to our results the motions in photosphere are anisotropic. The radial component of microturbulent velocity decreases from 1.0 to 0.3 km/s and the tangential one from 1.7 to 1.3 km/c at the photosphere heights from 200 to 500 km (log tau_5 = -1.4 and -3.5). At the same hei…
The ANTARES radiation hydrodynamics code is capable of simulating the solar granulation in detail unequaled by direct observation. We introduce a state-of-the-art numerical tool to the solar physics community and demonstrate its applicability to model the solar granulation. The code is based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory finite volume method and by its implementation of local mesh refinement is also capable of simulating turbulent fluids. While the ANTARES code already provides promising insights into small-scale dynamical processes occurring in the quiet-Sun photosphere, it will…
A variety of indices have been proposed in order to represent the many different observables modulated by the solar cycle. Most of these indices are highly correlated with each other owing to their intrinsic link with the solar magnetism and the dominant eleven year cycle, but their variations may differ in fine details, as well as on short- and long-term trends. In this paper we present an overview of the indices that are often employed to describe the many features of the solar cycle, moving from the ones referring to direct observations of the inner solar atmosphere, the photosphere and chr…
The \ion{Fe}{i} lines observed by the Hinode/SOT spectropolarimeter were always seen in absorption, apart from the extreme solar limb. Here we analyse a unique dataset capturing these lines in emission during a solar white-light flare. We analyse the temperature stratification in the solar photosphere during a white-light flare and compare it with the post-white-light flare state. We used two scans of the Hinode/SOT spectropolarimeter to infer, by means of the LTE inversion code Stokes Inversion based on Response function (SIR), the physical properties in the solar photosphere during and after…
Connectivity between the solar photosphere and chromosphere in a vortical structure. Observations of multi-phase, small-scale magnetic field amplification
Three-minute wave enhancement in the solar photosphere
Magnetic fields on the surface of the Sun and stars in general imprint or modify the polarization state of the electromagnetic radiation that is leaving from the star. The inference of solar/stellar magnetic fields is performed by detecting, studying and modeling polarized light from the target star. In this review we present an overview of techniques that are used to study the atmosphere of the Sun, and particularly those that allow to infer magnetic fields. We have combined a small selection of theory on polarized radiative transfer, inversion techniques and we discuss a number of results fr…
We study the dynamics of plasma along the legs of an arch filament system (AFS) from the chromosphere to the photosphere, observed with high-cadence spectroscopic data from two ground-based solar telescopes: the GREGOR telescope (Tenerife) using the GREGOR Infrarred Spectrograph (GRIS) in the He I 10830 Å range and the Swedish Solar Telescope (La Palma) using the CRisp Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter to observe the Ca II 8542 Å and Fe I 6173 Å spectral lines. The temporal evolution of the draining of the plasma was followed along the legs of a single arch filament from the chromosphere to the phot…
The electromagnetic energy flux in the lower atmosphere of the Sun is a key tool to describe the energy balance of the solar atmosphere. Current investigations on energy flux in the solar atmosphere focus primarily on the vertical electromagnetic flux through the photosphere, ignoring the Poynting flux in other directions and its possible contributions to local heating. Based on a realistic Bifrost simulation of a quiet-Sun (coronal hole) atmosphere, we find that the total electromagnetic energy flux in the photosphere occurs mainly parallel to the photosphere, concentrating in small regions a…
In this article, we present the application of the weighted horizontal gradient of magnetic field (WGM) flare prediction method to 3-dimensional (3D) extrapolated magnetic configurations of 13 flaring solar active regions (ARs). The main aim is to identify an optimal height range, if any, in the interface region between the photosphere and lower corona, where the flare onset time prediction capability of WGM is best exploited. The optimal height is where flare prediction, by means of the WGM method, is achieved earlier than at the photospheric level. 3D magnetic structures, based on potential …
The observed magnetic field on the solar surface is characterized by a very complex spatial and temporal behaviour. Although feature-tracking algorithms have allowed us to deepen our understanding of this behaviour, subjectivity plays an important role in the identification, tracking of such features. In this paper we study the temporal stochasticity of the magnetic field on the solar surface \textit{without} relying neither on the concept of magnetic feature nor on subjective assumptions about their identification and interaction. The analysis is applied to observations of the magnetic field …
As the global magnetic field of the Sun has an activity cycle, one expects to observe some variation of the dynamical properties of the flows visible in the photosphere. We investigate the flow field during the solar cycle by analysing SDO/HMI observations of continuum intensity, Doppler velocity and longitudinal magnetic field. We first picked data at disk center during 6 years along the solar cycle with a 48-hour time step in order to study the overall evolution of the continuum intensity and magnetic field. Then we focused on thirty 6-hour sequences of quiet regions without any remnant of m…
Global Forces in Eruptive Solar Flares: The Lorentz force Acting on the Solar Atmosphere and the Solar Interior
J. Lett. 716,L195,2010)。
Aims. Due to the fundamental importance of vortices on the photosphere, in this work we aim to fully automate the process of intensity vortex identification to facilitate a more robust statistical analysis of their properties. Methods. Using on-disk observational data of the Fe I continuum, the process of vortex identification is fully automated, for the first time in solar physics, with the help of an established method from hydrodynamics initially employed for the study of eddies in turbulent flows (Graftieaux et al. 2001). Results. We find that the expected lifetime of intensity vortices is…
One of the most important features in the solar atmosphere is magnetic network and its rela- tionship with the transition region (TR), and coronal brightness. It is important to understand how energy is transported into the corona and how it travels along the magnetic-field lines be- tween deep photosphere and chromosphere through the TR and corona. An excellent proxy for transportation is the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) raster scans and imaging observations in near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission channels with high time-spatial resolutions. In this study,…
Heating of polar coronal holes during solar minimum and acceleration of the fast solar wind issuing therefrom lack comprehensive theoretical understanding. Wave particle interactions are considered to have crucial effects on the extreme properties of heavy ions in the collision-less region of the polar coronal holes. In this article, we have presented a novel sensitivity analysis to investigate plasma heating by radio waves at lower hybrid frequencies. We have employed a three fluid Maxwell model comprising electrons, protons, and alpha particles at around two solar radius heliocentric distanc…
Jet phenomena with a bright loop in their footpoint, called anemone jets, have been observed in the solar corona and chromosphere. These jets are formed as a consequence of magnetic reconnection, and from the scale universality of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), it can be expected that anemone jets exist even in the solar photosphere. However, it is not necessarily apparent that jets can be generated as a result of magnetic reconnection in the photosphere, where the magnetic energy is not dominant. Furthermore, MHD waves generated from the photospheric jets could contribute to chromospheric heatin…
We perform radiative magnetohydrodynamic calculations for the solar quiet region to investigate the dependence of statistical flow on magnetic properties and the three-dimensional (3D) structure of magnetic patches in the presence of large-scale flow that mimics differential rotation. It has been confirmed that strong magnetic field patches move faster in the longitudinal direction at the solar surface. Consequently, strong magnetic patches penetrate deeper into the solar interior. The motion of the deep-rooted magnetic patches is influenced by the faster differential rotation in the deeper la…
A recent review shows that observations performed with different telescopes, spectral lines, and interpretation methods all agree about a vertical magnetic field gradient in solar active regions on the order of 3 G/km, when a horizontal magnetic field gradient of only 0.3 G/km is found. This represents an inexplicable discrepancy with respect to the divB=0 law. The objective of this paper is to explain these observations through the law B=μ_0(H+M) in magnetized media. Magnetization is due to plasma diamagnetism, which results from the spiral motion of free electrons or charges about the magnet…
Routine ultraviolet imaging of the Sun's upper atmosphere shows the spectacular manifestation of solar activity; yet we remain blind to its main driver, the magnetic field. Here we report unprecedented spectropolarimetric observations of an active region plage and its surrounding enhanced network, showing circular polarization in ultraviolet (Mg II $h$ & $k$ and Mn I) and visible (Fe I) lines. We infer the longitudinal magnetic field from the photosphere to the very upper chromosphere. At the top of the plage chromosphere the field strengths reach more than 300 gauss, strongly correlated with …
NASA's Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) provides high resolution observations of the solar atmosphere through UV spectroscopy and imaging. Since the launch of IRIS in June 2013, we have conducted systematic observation campaigns in coordination with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma. The SST provides complementary high-resolution observations of the photosphere and chromosphere. The SST observations include spectro-polarimetric imaging in photospheric Fe I lines and spectrally-resolved imaging in the chromospheric Ca II 8542 A, H-alpha, and Ca II K lines. We present…
We compare the size distributions of self-organized criticality (SOC) systems in the solar photosphere and the transition region, using magnetogram data from Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) and Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)} data. For each dataset we fit a combination of a Gaussian and a power law size distribution function, which yields information on four different physical processes: (i) Gaussian random noise in IRIS data; (ii) spicular events in the plages of the transition region (described by power law size distribution in IRIS data); (iii) salt-and-pepper small-sca…
It is generally believed that the evolution of magnetic helicity has a close relationship with solar activity. Before the launch of SDO, earlier studies have mostly used MDI/SOHO line of sight magnetograms and assumed that magnetic fields are radial when calculating magnetic helicity injection rate from photospheric magnetograms. However, this assumption is not necessarily true. Here we use the vector magnetograms and line of sight magnetograms, both taken by HMI/SDO, to estimate the effects of non-radial magnetic field on measuring magnetic helicity injection rate. We find that: 1) The effect…
We describe a new quiet-Sun phenomenon which we call "Quiet-Sun Ellerman-like Brightenings" (QSEB). QSEBs are similar to Ellerman bombs (EB) in some respects but differ significantly in others. EBs are transient brightenings of the wings of the Balmer H-alpha line that mark strong-field photospheric reconnection in complex active regions. QSEBs are similar but smaller and less intense Balmer-wing brightenings that occur in quiet areas away from active regions. In the H-alpha wing we measure typical lengths of less than 0.5 arcsec, widths of 0.21 arcsec, and lifetimes of less than a minute. We …
The Relation between the Radial Temperature Profile in the Chromosphere and the Solar Spectrum at Centimeter, Millimeter, Sub-millimeter, and Infrared Wavelengths
This is a follow-up investigation of a magnetic-flux cancellation event at a polarity inversion line (PIL) on the Sun observed with the spectropolarimeter on board Hinode. Anomalous circular polarization (Stokes V) profiles are observed in the photosphere along the PIL at the cancellation sites. Kubo et al. (2010) previously reported that the theoretically expected horizontal fields between the canceling opposite-polarity magnetic elements in this event are not detected at granular scales. We show that the observed anomalous Stokes V profiles are reproduced successfully by adding the nearly sy…
