Some numerical characteristics of bipartite graphs in relation to the problem of finding all disjoint pairs of S-permutation matrices in the general $n^2 \times n^2$ case are discussed in this paper. All bipartite graphs of the type $g=<R_g \cup C_g, E_g>$, where $|R_g |=|C_g |=2$ or $|R_g |=|C_g |=3$ are provided. The cardinality of the sets of mutually disjoint S-permutation matrices in both the $4 \times 4$ and $9 \times 9$ cases are calculated.
This work examines the concept of S-permutation matrices, namely $n^2 \times n^2$ permutation matrices containing a single 1 in each canonical $n \times n$ subsquare (block). The article suggests a formula for counting mutually disjoint pairs of $n^2 \times n^2$ S-permutation matrices in the general case by restricting this task to the problem of finding some numerical characteristics of the elements of specially defined for this purpose factor-set of the set of $n \times n$ binary matrices. The paper describe an algorithm that solves the main problem. To do that, every $n\times n$ binary matr…
A bipartite graph B is called a brace if it is connected and every matching of size at most two in B is contained in some perfect matching of B and a cycle C in B is called conformal if B-V(C) has a perfect matching. We show that there do not exist two disjoint alternating paths that form a cross over a conformal cycle C in a brace B if and only if one can reduce B, by an application of a matching theoretic analogue of small clique sums, to a planar brace H in which C bounds a face. We then utilise this result and provide a polynomial time algorithm which solves the 2-linkage problem for alter…
Let $n\geq 6,k\geq 0$ be two integers. Let $H$ be a graph of order $n$ with $k$ components, each of which is an even cycle of length at least $6$ and $G$ be a bipartite graph with bipartition $(X,Y)$ such that $|X|=|Y|\geq n/2$. In this paper, we show that if the minimum degree of $G$ is at least $n/2-k+1$, then $G$ contains a subdivision of $H$. This generalized an older result of Wang.
Let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $G$ be a balanced bipartite graph of order $2n$ with bipartition $(X, Y)$, and $S$ a subset of $X$. Suppose that every pair of nonadjacent vertices $(x,y)$ with $x\in S, y\in Y$ satisfies $d(x)+d(y)\geq n+1$. We show that if $|S|\geq 2k+2$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles covering $S$ such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$. Here, both the degree condition and the lower bound of $|S|$ are best possible. And we also show that if $|S|=2k+1$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at l…
An embedding of a graph in $3$-space is linkless if for every two disjoint cycles there exists an embedded ball that contains one of the cycles and is disjoint from the other. We prove that every bipartite linklessly embeddable (simple) graph on $n\ge5$ vertices has at most $3n-10$ edges, unless it is isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,n-3}$.
We show that for any $2$-local colouring of the edges of the balanced complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$, its vertices can be covered with at most~$3$ disjoint monochromatic paths. And, we can cover almost all vertices of any complete or balanced complete bipartite $r$-locally coloured graph with $O(r^2)$ disjoint monochromatic cycles.\\ We also determine the $2$-local bipartite Ramsey number of a path almost exactly: Every $2$-local colouring of the edges of $K_{n,n}$ contains a monochromatic path on $n$ vertices.
We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetildeα(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pa…
Paths $P^1,\ldots,P^k$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ are mutually induced if any two distinct $P^i$ and $P^j$ have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices. For a fixed integer $k$, the $k$-Induced Disjoint Paths problem is to decide if a graph $G$ with $k$ pairs of specified vertices $(s_i,t_i)$ contains $k$ mutually induced paths $P^i$ such that each $P^i$ starts from $s_i$ and ends at $t_i$. Whereas the non-induced version is well-known to be polynomial-time solvable for every fixed integer $k$, a classical result from the literature states that even $2$-Induced Disjoint Paths is NP-complete. W…
A signed graph is a graph with a function that assigns a label of positive or negative to each edge. The sign of a circle is the product of the signs of its edges; a graph is balanced if all of its circles are positive. A set of edges whose negation yields a balanced graph is a negation set. Results: tests to determine whether a negation set is minimal, minimum, or the unique minimum; any two disjoint negation sets must be bipartite; two classes of graphs are shown to have bipartite negation sets (in general, existence is an unsolved problem); I give an algorithm which finds a maximum family o…
We say that a bipartite graph $G(A, B)$ with fixed parts $A$, $B$ is proximinal if there is a semimetric space $(X, d)$ such that $A$ and $B$ are disjoint proximinal subsets of $X$ and all edges $\{a, b\}$ satisfy the equality $d(a, b) = \operatorname{dist}(A, B)$. It is proved that a bipartite graph $G$ is not isomorphic to any proximinal graph iff $G$ is finite and empty. It is also shown that the subgraph induced by all non-isolated vertices of a nonempty bipartite graph $G$ is a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs iff $G$ is isomorphic to a nonempty proximinal graph for an ultramet…
This work examines the problem to describe an efficient algorithm for obtaining $n^2 \times n^2$ Sudoku matrices. For this purpose, we define the concepts of $n\times n$ $Π_n$-matrix and disjoint $Π_n$-matrices. The article, using the set-theoretical approach, describes an algorithm for obtaining $n^2$-tuples of $n\times n$ mutually disjoint $Π_n$ matrices. We show that in input $n^2$ mutually disjoint $Π_n$ matrices, it is not difficult to receive a Sudoku matrix.
Paths $P_1,\ldots, P_k$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ are mutually induced if any two distinct $P_i$ and $P_j$ have neither common vertices nor adjacent vertices. The Induced Disjoint Paths problem is to decide if a graph $G$ with $k$ pairs of specified vertices $(s_i,t_i)$ contains $k$ mutually induced paths $P_i$ such that each $P_i$ starts from $s_i$ and ends at $t_i$. This is a classical graph problem that is NP-complete even for $k=2$. We introduce a natural generalization, Induced Disjoint Connected Subgraphs: instead of connecting pairs of terminals, we must connect sets of terminals. We give al…
In this paper, we study $(1,2)$-step competition graphs of bipartite tournaments. A bipartite tournament means an orientation of a complete bipartite graph. We show that the $(1,2)$-step competition graph of a bipartite tournament has at most one non-trivial component or consists of exactly two complete components of size at least three and, especially in the former, the diameter of the nontrivial component is at most three if it exists. Based on this result, we show that, among the connected non-complete graphs which are triangle-free or the cycles of which are edge-disjoint, $K_{1,4}$ is the…
Let $G$ be a connected graph. If $G$ contains a matching of size $k$, and every matching of size $k$ is contained in a perfect matching of $G$, then $G$ is said to be \emph{$k$-extendable}. A $k$-regular spanning subgraph of $G$ is called a \textit{$k$-factor}. In this paper, we provide spectral conditions for a (balanced bipartite) graph with minimum degree $δ$ to be $k$-extendable, and for the existence of a $k$-factor in a balanced bipartite graph, respectively. Our results generalize some previous results on perfect matchings of graphs, and extend the results in \cite{D.F} and \cite{W.L} t…
The current paper is dedicated to the problem of finding the number of mutually non isomorphic bipartite graphs of the type $g=\langle R_g ,C_g ,E_g \rangle$ at given $n=|R_g |$ and $m=|C_g |$, where $R_g$ and $C_g$ are the two disjoint parts of the vertices of the graphs $g$, and $E_g$ is the set of edges, $Eg \subseteq R_g \times C_g$. For this purpose, the concept of canonical binary matrix is introduced. The different canonical matrices unambiguously describe the different with exactness up to isomorphism bipartite graphs. We have found a necessary and sufficient condition an arbitrary mat…
We prove that any $n$-vertex graph whose complement is triangle-free contains $n^2/12-o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint triangles. This is tight for the disjoint union of two cliques of order $n/2$. We also prove a corresponding stability theorem, that all large graphs attaining the above bound are close to being bipartite. Our results answer a question of Alon and Linial, and make progress on a conjecture of Erdős.
Let $S$ be a set of $n$ points in the plane in general position. Two line segments connecting pairs of points of $S$ cross if they have an interior point in common. Two vertex disjoint geometric graphs with vertices in $S$ cross if there are two edges, one from each graph, which cross. A set of vertex disjoint geometric graphs with vertices in $S$ is called mutually crossing if any two of them cross. We show that there exists a constant $c$ such that from any family of $n$ mutually crossing triangles, one can always obtain a family of at least $n^c$ mutually crossing $2$-paths (each of which i…
The main result of the paper is motivated by the following two, apparently unrelated graph optimization problems: (A) as an extension of Edmonds' disjoint branchings theorem, characterize digraphs comprising $k$ disjoint branchings $B_i$ each having a specified number $μ_i$ of arcs, (B) as an extension of Ryser's maximum term rank formula, determine the largest possible matching number of simple bipartite graphs complying with degree-constraints. The solutions to these problems and to their generalizations will be obtained from a new min-max theorem on covering a supermodular function by a sim…
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $ex(n,H,F)$. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,kF)$, where $kF$ denotes $k$ vertex disjoint copies of a fixed graph $F$. Our results include cases when $F$ is a complete graph, cycle or a complete bipartite graph.
Matching minors are a specialisation of minors fit for the study of graph with perfect matchings. The notion of matching minors has been used to give a structural description of bipartite graphs on which the number of perfect matchings can becomputed efficiently, based on a result of Little, by McCuaig et al. in 1999.In this paper we generalise basic ideas from the graph minor series by Robertson and Seymour to the setting of bipartite graphs with perfect matchings. We introducea version of Erdos-Posa property for matching minors and find a direct link between this property and planarity. From…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $2$, a path in $G$ is said to be an $S$-path if it connects all vertices of $S$. Two $S$-paths $P_1$ and $P_2$ are said to be internally disjoint if $E(P_1)\cap E(P_2)=\emptyset$ and $V(P_1)\cap V(P_2)=S$. Let $π_G (S)$ denote the maximum number of internally disjoint $S$-paths in $G$. The $k$-path-connectivity $π_k(G)$ of $G$ is then defined as the minimum $π_G (S)$, where $S$ ranges over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$. In [M. Hager, Path-connectivity in graphs, Discrete Math. 59(1986), 53--59], the $k$-path-connectivity of the com…
In this paper, we show that every $2m$-partition-connected graph $G$ has a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\le \lceil \frac{3}{4}d_G(v)\rceil$. A graph $H$ is said to be $m$-partition-connected, if it contains $m$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. As an application, we conclude that tough enough graphs with appropriate number of vertices have a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor with maximum degree at most $3m+1$. Finally, we prove that tough enough graphs of order at least $3k$ admit a bipartite connected factor whose degrees lie in the set…
We investigate the terminal-pairability problem in the case when the base graph is a complete bipartite graph, and the demand graph is a (not necessarily bipartite) multigraph on the same vertex set. In computer science, this problem is known as the edge-disjoint paths problem. We improve the lower bound on the maximum value of $Δ(D)$ which still guarantees that the demand graph $D$ has a realization in $K_{n,n}$. We also solve the extremal problem on the number of edges, i.e., we determine the maximum number of edges which guarantees that a demand graph is realizable in $K_{n,n}$.
We show that for any $\varepsilon>0$ and $Δ\in\mathbb{N}$, there exists $α>0$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying that $δ(G)\geq\varepsilon n$ and $e(X, Y)>0$ for every pair of disjoint vertex sets $X, Y\subseteq V(G)$ of size $αn$ contains all spanning trees with maximum degree at most $Δ$. This strengthens a result of Böttcher et al.
Let $c\in (0, 1]$ be a real number and let $n$ be a sufficiently large integer. We prove that every $n$-vertex $c n$-regular graph $G$ contains a collection of $\lfloor 1/c \rfloor$ paths whose union covers all but at most $o(n)$ vertices of $G$. The constant $\lfloor 1/c \rfloor$ is best possible when $1/c\notin \mathbb{N}$ and off by $1$ otherwise. Moreover, if in addition $G$ is bipartite, then the number of paths can be reduced to $\lfloor 1/(2c) \rfloor$, which is best possible.
Barnette's Conjecture claims that all cubic, 3-connected, planar, bipartite graphs are Hamiltonian. We give a translation of this conjecture into the matching-theoretic setting. This allows us to relax the requirement of planarity to give the equivalent conjecture that all cubic, 3-connected, Pfaffian, bipartite graphs are Hamiltonian. A graph, other than the path of length three, is a brace if it is bipartite and any two disjoint edges are part of a perfect matching. Our perspective allows us to observe that Barnette's Conjecture can be reduced to cubic, planar braces. We show a similar reduc…
We consider a bipartite version of the color degree matrix problem. A bipartite graph $G(U,V,E)$ is half-regular if all vertices in $U$ have the same degree. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a bipartite degree matrix (also known as demand matrix) to be the color degree matrix of an edge-disjoint union of half-regular graphs. We also give necessary and sufficient perturbations to transform realizations of a half-regular degree matrix into each other. Based on these perturbations, a Markov chain Monte Carlo method is designed in which the inverse of the acceptance ratios are polyn…
We enumerate factorisations of the complete bipartite graph into spanning semiregular graphs in several cases, including when the degrees of all the factors except one or two are small. The resulting asymptotic behaviour is seen to generalise the number of semiregular graphs in an elegant way. This leads us to conjecture a general formula when the number of factors is vanishing compared to the number of vertices. As a corollary, we find the average number of ways to partition the edges of a random semiregular bipartite graph into spanning semiregular subgraphs in several cases. Our proof of on…
Let $C \subseteq [r]^m$ be a code such that any two words of $C$ have Hamming distance at least $t$. It is not difficult to see that determining a code $C$ with the maximum number of words is equivalent to finding the largest $n$ such that there is an $r$-edge-coloring of $K_{m, n}$ with the property that any pair of vertices in the class of size $n$ has at least $t$ alternating paths (with adjacent edges having different colors) of length $2$. In this paper we consider a more general problem from a slightly different direction. We are interested in finding maximum $t$ such that there is an $r…
