Given a bipartite graph $H$ and an integer $n$, let $f(n;H)$ be the smallest integer such that, any set of edge disjoint copies of $H$ on $n$ vertices, can be extended to an $H$-design on at most $n+f(n;H)$ vertices. We establish tight bounds for the growth of $f(n;H)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. In particular, we prove the conjecture of Füredi and Lehel \cite{FuLe} that $f(n;H) = o(n)$. This settles a long-standing open problem.
The graph packing problem is a well-known area in graph theory. We consider a bipartite version and give almost tight conditions on the packability of two bipartite sequences.
We prove that every Eulerian orientation of $K_{m,n}$ contains $\frac{1}{4+\sqrt{8}}mn(1-o(1))$ arc-disjoint directed 4-cycles, improving earlier lower bounds. Combined with a probabilistic argument, this result is used to prove that every regular tournament with $n$ vertices contains $\frac{1}{8+\sqrt{32}}n^2(1-o(1))$ arc-disjoint directed 4-cycles. The result is also used to provide an upper bound for the distance between two antipodal vertices in interchange graphs.
We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.
We give a construction that provides infinitely many 2-connected, cubic, bipartite, and planar graphs G with 3k vertices and such that the number of disjoint copies of a 3-vertex path in G is less than k.
Given a graph $G$ and a nondecreasing sequence $S=(s_1,\ldots,s_k)$ of positive integers, the mapping $c:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ is called an $S$-packing coloring of $G$ if for any two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $c^{-1}(i)$, the distance between $x$ and $y$ is greater than $s_i$. The smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a $(1,2,\ldots,k)$-packing coloring of a graph $G$ is called the packing chromatic number of $G$, denoted $χ_ρ(G)$. The question of boundedness of the packing chromatic number in the class of subcubic (planar) graphs was investigated in several earlier …
We show that any $3$-connected cubic plane graph on $n$ vertices, with all faces of size at most $6$, can be made bipartite by deleting no more than $\sqrt{(p+3t)n/5}$ edges, where $p$ and $t$ are the numbers of pentagonal and triangular faces, respectively. In particular, any such graph can be made bipartite by deleting at most $\sqrt{12n/5}$ edges. This bound is tight, and we characterise the extremal graphs. We deduce tight lower bounds on the size of a maximum cut and a maximum independent set for this class of graphs. This extends and sharpens the results of Faria, Klein and Stehlik [SIAM…
We prove that in every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_n$ there is a collection of $n^2/12 + o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint monochromatic triangles, thus confirming a conjecture of Erdős. We also prove a corresponding stability result, showing that $2$-colourings that are close to attaining the aforementioned bound have a colour class which is close to bipartite. As part of our proof, we confirm a recent conjecture of Tyomkyn about the fractional version of this problem.
List packing is a notion that was introduced in 2021 (by Cambie et al.). The list packing number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{\ell}^*(G)$, is the least $k$ such that for any list assignment $L$ that assigns $k$ colors to each vertex of $G$, there is a set of $k$ proper $L$-colorings of $G$, $\{f_1, \ldots, f_k \}$, with the property $f_i(v) \neq f_j(v)$ whenever $1 \leq i < j \leq k$ and $v \in V(G)$. We present a short proof that for any graph $G$, $χ_{\ell}^*(G) \leq |V(G)|$. Interestingly, our proof makes use of Galvin's celebrated result that the list chromatic number of the line graph of a…
We consider the following generalization of graph packing. Let $G_{1} = (V_{1}, E_{1})$ and $G_{2} = (V_{2}, E_{2})$ be graphs of order $n$ and $G_{3} = (V_{1} \cup V_{2}, E_{3})$ a bipartite graph. A bijection $f$ from $V_{1}$ onto $V_{2}$ is a list packing of the triple $(G_{1}, G_{2}, G_{3})$ if $uv \in E_{2}$ implies $f(u)f(v) \notin E_{2}$ and $vf(v) \notin E_{3}$ for all $v \in V_{1}$. We extend the classical results of Sauer and Spencer and Bollobás and Eldridge on packing of graphs with small sizes or maximum degrees to the setting of list packing. In particular, we extend the well-kno…
Boettcher, Schacht and Taraz gave a condition on the minimum degree of a graph G on n vertices that ensures G contains every r-chromatic graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n), thereby proving a conjecture of Bollobas and Komlos. We strengthen this result in the case when H is bipartite. Indeed, we give an essentially best-possible condition on the degree sequence of a graph G on n vertices that forces G to contain every bipartite graph H on n vertices of bounded degree and of bandwidth o(n). This also implies an Ore-type result. In fact, we prove a much stronger result …
Given a graph $G=(V(G), E(G))$, the size of a minimum dominating set, minimum paired dominating set, and a minimum total dominating set of a graph $G$ are denoted by $γ(G)$, $γ_{\rm pr}(G)$, and $γ_{t}(G)$, respectively. For a positive integer $k$, a $k$-packing in $G$ is a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that for every pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ in $S$, the distance between $u$ and $v$ is at least $k+1$. The $k$-packing number is the order of a largest $k$-packing and is denoted by $ρ_{k}(G)$. It is well known that $γ_{\rm pr}(G) \le 2γ(G)$. In this paper, we prove that it is NP-hard t…
Take a graph $G$, an edge subset $Σ\subseteq E(G)$, and a set of terminals $T\subseteq V(G)$ where $|T|$ is even. The triple $(G,Σ,T)$ is called a signed graft. A $T$-join is odd if it contains an odd number of edges from $Σ$. Let $ν$ be the maximum number of edge-disjoint odd $T$-joins. A signature is a set of the form $Σ\triangle δ(U)$ where $U\subseteq V(G)$ and $|U\cap T)$ is even. Let $τ$ be the minimum cardinality a $T$-cut or a signature can achieve. Then $ν\leq τ$ and we say that $(G,Σ,T)$ packs if equality holds here. We prove that $(G,Σ,T)$ packs if the signed graft is Eulerian and i…
We consider (closed neighbourhood) packings and their generalization in graphs called limited packings. A vertex set X in a graph G is a k-limited packing if for any vertex $v\in V(G)$, $\left|N[v] \cap X\right| \le k$, where $N[v]$ is the closed neighbourhood of $v$. The k-limited packing number $L_k(G)$ is the largest size of a k-limited packing in G. Limited packing problems can be considered as secure facility location problems in networks. We develop probabilistic and greedy approaches to limited packings in graphs, providing lower bounds for the k-limited packing number, and randomized a…
We study the contact structure of totally separable} packings of translates of a convex body $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, that is, packings where any two touching bodies have a separating hyperplane that does not intersect the interior of any translate in the packing. The separable Hadwiger number $H_{\text{sep}}(K)$ of $K$ is defined to be the maximum number of translates touched by a single translate, with the maximum taken over all totally separable packings of translates of $K$. We show that for each $d\geq 8$, there exists a smooth and strictly convex $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $H_{\text{sep}}(…
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to pack if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ_1(G)+1) (Δ_2(G)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumption that $G_1$ or $G_2$ has bounded codegree. In particular, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ that, if $G_1$ contains no copy of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,t}$ and $Δ_1 > 17 t \cdot Δ_2$,…
We consider (closed neighbourhood) packings and their generalization in graphs. A vertex set X in a graph G is a k-limited packing if for any vertex $v\in V(G)$, $\left|N[v] \cap X\right| \le k$, where N[v] is the closed neighbourhood of v. The k-limited packing number $L_k(G)$ of a graph G is the largest size of a k-limited packing in G. Limited packing problems can be considered as secure facility location problems in networks. In this paper, we develop a new probabilistic approach to limited packings in graphs, resulting in lower bounds for the k-limited packing number and a randomized algo…

This paper is the first from a series of papers that provide a characterization of maximum packings of $T$-cuts in bipartite graphs. Given a connected graph, a set $T$ of an even number of vertices, and a minimum $T$-join, an edge weighting can be defined, from which distances between vertices can be defined. Furthermore, given a specified vertex called root, vertices can be classified according to their distances from the root, and this classification of vertices can be used to define a family of subgraphs called {\em distance components}. Sebö provided a theorem that revealed a relationship …
Motivated by a conjecture of Liang [Y.-C. Liang. {\em Anti-magic labeling of graphs}. PhD thesis, National Sun Yat-sen University, 2013.], we introduce a restricted path packing problem in bipartite graphs that we call a $\mathtt{V}$-free $2$-matching. We verify the conjecture through a weakening of the hypergraph matching problem. We close the paper by showing that it is NP-complete to decide whether one of the color classes of a bipartite graph can be covered by a $\mathtt{V}$-free $2$-matching.
In a sequence of four papers, we prove the following results (via a unified approach) for all sufficiently large $n$: (i) [1-factorization conjecture] Suppose that $n$ is even and $D \geq 2\lceil n/4\rceil -1$. Then every $D$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices has a decomposition into perfect matchings. Equivalently, $χ'(G)=D$. (ii) [Hamilton decomposition conjecture] Suppose that $D \ge \lfloor n/2 \rfloor $. Then every $D$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices has a decomposition into Hamilton cycles and at most one perfect matching. (iii) [Optimal packings of Hamilton cycles] Suppose that $G$ is…
We provide a degree condition on a regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ which ensures the existence of a near optimal packing of any family $\mathcal H$ of bounded degree $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic separable graphs into $G$. In general, this degree condition is best possible. Here a graph is separable if it has a sublinear separator whose removal results in a set of components of sublinear size. Equivalently, the separability condition can be replaced by that of having small bandwidth. Thus our result can be viewed as a version of the bandwidth theorem of Böttcher, Schacht and Taraz in the setting of ap…
In the random geometric graph $G(n,r_n)$, $n$ vertices are placed randomly in Euclidean $d$-space and edges are added between any pair of vertices distant at most $r_n$ from each other. We establish strong laws of large numbers (LLNs) for a large class of graph parameters, evaluated for $G(n,r_n)$ in the thermodynamic limit with $nr_n^d =$ const., and also in the dense limit with $n r_n^d \to \infty$, $r_n \to 0$. Examples include domination number, independence number, clique-covering number, eternal domination number and triangle packing number. The general theory is based on certain subaddi…
For a positive integer $n$, a graph $F$ and a bipartite graph $G\subseteq K_{n,n}$ let ${F(n+n, G)}$ denote the number of copies of $F$ in $G$, and let $F(n+n, m)$ denote the minimum number of copies of $F$ in all graphs $G\subseteq K_{n,n}$ with $m$ edges. The study of such a function is the subject of theorems of supersaturated graphs and closely related to the Sidorenko-Erdős-Simonovits conjecture as well. In the present paper we investigate the case when $F= K_{2,t}$ and in particular the quadrilateral graph case. For $F=C_4$, we obtain exact results if $m$ and the corresponding Zarankiewi…
Threshold graphs are a class of graphs that have many equivalent definitions and have applications in integer programming and set packing problems. A graph is said to have a threshold cover of size $k$ if its edges can be covered using $k$ threshold graphs. Chvátal and Hammer, in 1977, defined the threshold dimension $\mathrm{th}(G)$ of a graph $G$ to be the least integer $k$ such that $G$ has a threshold cover of size $k$ and observed that $\mathrm{th}(G)\geqχ(G^*)$, where $G^*$ is a suitably constructed auxiliary graph.
