We consider the following generalization of graph packing. Let $G_{1} = (V_{1}, E_{1})$ and $G_{2} = (V_{2}, E_{2})$ be graphs of order $n$ and $G_{3} = (V_{1} \cup V_{2}, E_{3})$ a bipartite graph. A bijection $f$ from $V_{1}$ onto $V_{2}$ is a list packing of the triple $(G_{1}, G_{2}, G_{3})$ if $uv \in E_{2}$ implies $f(u)f(v) \notin E_{2}$ and $vf(v) \notin E_{3}$ for all $v \in V_{1}$. We extend the classical results of Sauer and Spencer and Bollobás and Eldridge on packing of graphs with small sizes or maximum degrees to the setting of list packing. In particular, we extend the well-known Bollobás--Eldridge Theorem, proving that if $Δ(G_{1}) \leq n-2, Δ(G_{2}) \leq n-2, Δ(G_{3}) \leq n-1$, and $|E_1| + |E_2| + |E_3| \leq 2n-3$, then either $(G_{1}, G_{2}, G_{3})$ packs or is one of 7 possible exceptions. Hopefully, the concept of list packing will help to solve some problems on ordinary graph packing, as the concept of list coloring did for ordinary coloring.
List packing is a notion that was introduced in 2021 (by Cambie et al.). The list packing number of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_{\ell}^*(G)$, is the least $k$ such that for any list assignment $L$ that assigns $k$ colors to each vertex of $G$, there is a set of $k$ proper $L$-colorings of $G$, $\{f_1, \ldots, f_k \}$, with the property $f_i(v) \neq f_j(v)$ whenever $1 \leq i < j \leq k$ and $v \in V(G)$. We present a short proof that for any graph $G$, $χ_{\ell}^*(G) \leq |V(G)|$. Interestingly, our proof makes use of Galvin's celebrated result that the list chromatic number of the line graph of a…
We revisit the problem of high-dimensional multiple packing in Euclidean space. Multiple packing is a natural generalization of sphere packing and is defined as follows. Let $ N>0 $ and $ L\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge2} $. A multiple packing is a set $\mathcal{C}$ of points in $ \mathbb{R}^n $ such that any point in $ \mathbb{R}^n $ lies in the intersection of at most $ L-1 $ balls of radius $ \sqrt{nN} $ around points in $ \mathcal{C} $. We study the multiple packing problem for both bounded point sets whose points have norm at most $\sqrt{nP}$ for some constant $P>0$ and unbounded point sets whose poi…
Given $D$ and $γ>0$, whenever $c>0$ is sufficiently small and $n$ sufficiently large, if $\mathcal{G}$ is a family of $D$-degenerate graphs of individual orders at most $n$, maximum degrees at most $\tfrac{cn}{\log n}$, and total number of edges at most $(1-γ)\binom{n}{2}$, then $\mathcal{G}$ packs into the complete graph $K_{n}$. Our proof proceeds by analysing a natural random greedy packing algorithm. This version of the manuscript corrects a small error that appeared in the published version [Adv Math, 354 (2019), 106739].
A spanning subgraph of a graph $G$ is called a perfect star packing in $G$ if every component of the spanning subgraph is isomorphic to the star graph $K_{1,3}$. An efficient dominating set of graph $G$ is a vertex subset $D$ of $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ not in $D$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex from $D$ and any two vertices of $D$ are not adjacent in $G$. Fullerene graph is a connected plane cubic graph with only pentagonal and hexagonal faces, which is the molecular graph of carbon fullerene. Clearly, a perfect star packing in a fullerene graph $G$ on $n$ vertices will exist if and…
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph is an open packing if (open) neighborhoods of any two distinct vertices in $S$ are disjoint. In this paper, we consider the graphs that have a unique maximum open packing. We characterize the trees with this property by using four local operations such that any nontrivial tree with a unique maximum open packing can be obtained by a sequence of these operations starting from $P_2$. We also prove that the decision version of the open packing number is NP-complete even when restricted to graphs of girth at least $6$. Finally, we show that the recognition of the gr…
We prove that in every $2$-edge-colouring of $K_n$ there is a collection of $n^2/12 + o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint monochromatic triangles, thus confirming a conjecture of Erdős. We also prove a corresponding stability result, showing that $2$-colourings that are close to attaining the aforementioned bound have a colour class which is close to bipartite. As part of our proof, we confirm a recent conjecture of Tyomkyn about the fractional version of this problem.
A $λ$-fold $r$-packing (multiple radius-$r$ covering) in a Hamming metric space is a code $C$ such that the radius-$r$ balls centered in $C$ cover each vertex of the space by not more (not less, respectively) than $λ$ times. The well-known $r$-error-correcting codes correspond to the case $λ=1$, while in general multifold $r$-packing are related with list decodable codes. We (a) propose asymptotic bounds for the maximum size of a $q$-ary $2$-fold $1$-packing as $q$ grows; (b) prove that a $q$-ary distance-$2$ MDS code of length $n$ is an optimal $n$-fold $1$-packing if $q\ge 2n$; (c) derive an…
A fundamental result of Kühn and Osthus [The minimum degree threshold for perfect graph packings, Combinatorica, 2009] determines up to an additive constant the minimum degree threshold that forces a graph to contain a perfect H-tiling. We prove a degree sequence version of this result which allows for a significant number of vertices to have lower degree.
In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable for every $t\ge 1$. In the 1980s, Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor has average degree $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ and hence is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Recently, Norin, Song and the author showed that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$, making the first improvement on the order of magnitude of the $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ bound. Building on that work, we previously showed that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t (\log…
Equitable list arboricity, introduced by Zhang in 2016, generalizes the notion of equitable list coloring by requiring the subgraph induced by each color class to be acyclic (instead of edgeless) in addition to the usual upper bound on the size of each color class. Graph $G$ is equitably $k$-list arborable if an equitable, arborable list coloring of $G$ exists for every list assignment for $G$ that associates with each vertex in $G$ a list of $k$ available colors. Zhang conjectured that any graph $G$ is equitably $k$-list arborable for each $k$ satisfying $k \geq \lceil (1+Δ(G))/2 \rceil$. We …
We define non-commutative versions of the vertex packing polytope, the theta convex body and the fractional vertex packing polytope of a graph, and establish a quantum version of the Sandwich Theorem of Grötschel, Lovász and Schrijver. We define new non-commutative versions of the Lovász number of a graph which lead to an upper bound of the zero-error capacity of the corresponding quantum channel that can be genuinely better than the one established previously by Duan, Severini and Winter. We define non-commutative counterparts of widely used classical graph parameters and establish their inte…
