By now it is known that in a singlet superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) structure the superconducting correlations carried by opposite-spin pairs penetrate into the ferromagnet over a short distance of the order of magnetic coherence length. The long-range proximity effect (LRPE), taking place on the length scale of the normal metal coherence length, can only be maintained by equal-spin pairs, which can be generated by magnetic inhomogeneities in the system. In this work we have predicted a new type of LRPE, which can take place in S/F heterostructures under non-equilibrium conditions. The superconducting correlations in the F region are generated by opposite-spin Cooper pairs and equal-spin pairs are not involved. The possibility for an opposite-spin pair to penetrate into the ferromagnet over a large distance is provided by creation of the proper non-equilibrium quasiparticle distribution there. This leads to a sharp increase (up to a few orders of magnitude) of the critical Josephson current through a S/F/S junction at some values of the voltage controlling the nonequilibrium distribution in the F interlayer.
We have performed the first experiments in a superconductor - normal metal - superconductor single electron transistor in which there is an extra superconducting strip partially overlapping the normal metal island in good metal-to-metal contact. Superconducting proximity effect gives rise to current peaks at voltages below the quasiparticle threshold. We interpret these peaks in terms of the Josephson-quasiparticle process and discuss their connection with the proximity induced energy gap in the normal metal island.
Motivated by the recent findings of unconventional superconductivity in $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures, we study the effect of interface induced Rashba spin orbit coupling on the conductance of a three terminal "T" shape superconducting device. We calculate the differential conductance for this device within the quasi-classical formalism that includes the mixing of triplet-singlet pairing due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. We discuss our result in the light of the conductance spectra reported by Chiu {\it et al.} for $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures.
We discuss the quasiparticle entropy and heat capacity of a dirty superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction. In the case of short junctions, the inverse proximity effect extending in the superconducting banks plays a crucial role in determining the thermodynamic quantities. In this case, commonly used approximations can violate thermodynamic relations between supercurrent and quasiparticle entropy. We provide analytical and numerical results as a function of different geometrical parameters. Quantitative estimates for the heat capacity can be relevant for the design of caloritronic d…
Current noise provides useful information on correlations important for transport properties of mesoscopic systems. Of particular interest, both experimentally and theoretically, are heterostructures of normal metals and superconductors. We use an extended Keldysh-Green's function approach to calculate the current correlations fully accounting for the superconducting proximity effect. The shot noise in diffusive wires shows a reentrant behaviour, similar to the reentrance effect of the conductance. At intermediate energies the effective charge (the ratio of the differential noise and different…
We demonstrate the transfer of the superconducting properties of NbTi---a large-gap high-critical-field superconductor---into an InAs heterostructure via a thin intermediate layer of epitaxial Al. Two device geometries, a Josephson junction and a gate-defined quantum point contact, are used to characterize interface transparency and the two-step proximity effect. In the Josephson junction, multiple Andreev reflection reveal near-unity transparency, with an induced gap $Δ^*=0.50~\mathrm{meV}$ and a critical temperature of $7.8~\mathrm{K}$. Tunneling spectroscopy yields a hard induced gap in the…
The performance of many superconducting devices is degraded in presence of non-equilibrium quasiparticles in the superconducting part. One promising approach towards their evacuation is the use of normal-metal quasiparticle traps, where normal metal is brought into good metallic contact with the superconductor. A voltage biased normal-metal--insulator--superconductor junction equipped with such a trap is used to investigate on the trapping performance and the part played by the superconducting proximity effect therein. This involves an appropriate one-dimensional model of the junction and the …
We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the pr…

We study the superconducting properties of the thin film BCS superconductor proximity coupled to a magnetically doped topological insulator(TI). Using the mean field theory, we show that Fulde-Ferrell(FF) pairing can be induced in the conventional superconductor by having inverse proximity effect(IPE). This occurs when the IPE of the TI to the superconductor is large enough that the normal band of the superconductor possesses a proximity induced spin-orbit coupling and magnetization. We find that the energetics of the different pairings are dependent on the coupling strength between the TI and…
Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of state…
This review discusses the electronic properties and the prospective research directions of superconductor-graphene heterostructures. The basic electronic properties of graphene are introduced to highlight the unique possibility of combining two seemingly unrelated physics, superconductivity and relativity. We then focus on graphene-based Josephson junctions, one of the most versatile superconducting quantum devices. The various theoretical methods that have been developed to describe graphene Josephson junctions are examined, together with their advantages and limitations, followed by a discus…
We analyse the possibility of the appearance of spontaneous currents in proximated superconducting/normal metal (S/N) heterostructure when Cooper pairs penetrate into the normal metal from the superconductor. In particular, we calculate the free energy of the S/N structure. We show that whereas the free energy of the N film $F_{N}$ in the presence of the proximity effect increases compared to the normal state, the total free energy, which includes the boundary term $F_{B}$, decreases. The condensate current decreases $F_{N}$, but increases the total free energy making the current-carrying stat…
The effect of proximity of the magnetism of the Pr-based manganite (Pr0.6Sr0.4MnO3) on the superconductivity of Bi-based high-temperature superconductor (Bi1.75Pb0.25Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d) was studied based on the results obtained from the magnetotransport and magnetization measurements. Decrease in the values of the upper critical field (HC2(0)) and an increase in the width of the superconducting transition (Delta TC) of Bi1.75Pb0.25Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d were observed in proximity with the manganite. The combined effect of magnetic exchange interaction arising from the manganite, the leakage of Cooper-pair…
In many superconducting devices, including qubits, quasiparticle excitations are detrimental. A normal metal ($N$) in contact with a superconductor ($S$) can trap these excitations; therefore such a trap can potentially improve the devices performances. The two materials influence each other, a phenomenon known as proximity effect which has drawn attention since the '60s. Here we study whether this mutual influence places a limitation on the possible performance improvement in superconducting qubits. We first revisit the proximity effect in uniform $NS$ bilayers; despite the long history of th…
We report the effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of a Nb film proximity coupled to the synthetic antiferromagnet Fe/{Cr/Fe}_(N-1). We find that there is a parity dependence of Tc on the total number of Fe layers, N; locally Tc is always a maximum when N is even, and a minimum when N is odd. The Fe electron mean free path and coherence length are indicative of dirty limit behavior; as such, we numerically model our data using the linearized Usadel equations with good correlation.
At the interface between a superconductor and a ferromagnetic metal spin-singlet Cooper pairs can penetrate into the ferromagnetic part of the heterostructure with an oscillating and decaying spin-singlet Cooper pair density. However, if the interface allows for a spin-mixing effect, equal-spin spin-triplet Cooper pairs can be generated that can penetrate much further into the ferromagnetic part of the heterostructure, known as the long-range proximity effect. Here, we present results of spin-mixing based on self-consistent solutions of the microscopic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations incorporat…
We report an investigation of current transport in Nb/Au/CaSrCuO/YBaCuO heterostructures including an antiferromagnetic interlayer (CaSrCuO). Epitaxial thin films of YBaCuO and CaSrCuO were grown by laser ablation on NdGaO substrates; the thicknesses of CaSrCuO films were 20 and 50 nm, and x=0.15 or 0.5. Our experimental results show that the superconducting current transport is increased in the Nb/Au/CaSrCuO/YBaCuO heterostructures in comparison with the ones observed in previously studied Nb/Au/YBaCuO heterostructures. It was found that the critical current of the structure is very sensitive…
We report on mutual proximity effects in d-wave superconductor/half-metal heterostructures which correspond to systems composed of high-Tc cuprates and manganite materials. In our study, proximity effects are induced by the interplay of two separate interface effects: spin-mixing (or rotation) surface scattering and spin-flip scattering. The surface spin-mixing scattering introduces spin-triplet pairing correlations in superconducting side; as a result, Andreev bound states are formed at energies within the superconducting gap. The spin-flip scattering introduces not only long range equal-spin…
The introduction of superconductivity to the Dirac surface states of a topological insulator leads to a topological superconductor, which may support topological quantum computing through Majorana zero modes. The development of a scalable material platform is key to the realization of topological quantum computing. Here we report on the growth and properties of high-quality (Bi,Sb)2Te3/graphene/gallium heterostructures. Our synthetic approach enables atomically sharp layers at both hetero-interfaces, which in turn promotes proximity-induced superconductivity that originates in the gallium film…
We show how in principle a coherent coupling between two superconductors of opposite parity can be realized in a three-layer oxide heterostructure. Due to strong intraionic spin-orbit coupling in the middle layer, singlet Cooper pairs are converted into triplet ones and vice versa. This results in a large enhancement of the triplet superconductivity, persisting well above the native triplet critical temperature.
We report evidence of large, nonlocal correlations between two spatially separated normal metals in superconductor/normal-metal (SN) heterostructures, which manifest themselves a nonlocal voltage generated in response to a driving current. Unlike prior experiments in SN heterostructures, the nonlocal correlations are mediated not by a superconductor, but by a proximity-coupled normal metal. The nonlocal correlations extend over relatively long length scales in comparison to the superconduncting case. At very low temperatures, we find a reduction in the nonlocal voltage for small applied curren…
Heterostructures made of itinerant ferromagnets and superconductors are studied. In contrast to most previous models, ferromagnetism is not enforced as an external Zeeman field but induced in a correlated single-band model (CSBM) that displays itinerant ferromagnetism as a mean-field ground state. This allows us to investigate the influence of an adjacent superconducting layer on the properties of the ferromagnet in a self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach. The CSBM displays a variety features not present in the Zeeman exchange model that influence the behavior of order parameters close…
We study a two-terminal graphene Josephson junction with contacts shaped to form a narrow constriction, less than 100nm in length. The contacts are made from type II superconducting contacts and able to withstand magnetic fields high enough to reach the quantum Hall (QH) regime in graphene. In this regime, the device conductance is determined by edge states, plus the contribution from the constricted region. In particular, the constriction area can support supercurrents up to fields of ~2.5T. Moreover, enhanced conductance is observed through a wide range of magnetic fields and gate voltages. …
We present the Usadel theory describing the superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with a half-metallic layer. It is shown that the full spin polarization inside the half-metals gives rise to the giant triplet spin-valve effect in superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) - half-metal (HM) trilayers as well as to the $φ_0$-junction formation in the S/F/HM/F/S systems. In addition, we consider the exactly solvable model of the S/F/HM trilayers of atomic thickness and demonstrate that it reproduces the main features of the spin-valve effect found within the Usadel approach. Our results …
We investigate the proximity effect in a heterostructure of the topological insulator (TI) \BiSe\ deposited on the HTSC material BSCCO. The latter is described by the one-band Hubbard model and is treated with cluster dynamical mean field theory (CDMFT), the TI layers being included via the CDMFT self-consistency loop. The penetration of superconductivity into the TI depends on the position of the Fermi level with respect to the TI gap. We illustrate the back action of the TI layer on the HTSC layer, in particular the gradual disappearance of Mott physics with increasing tunneling amplitude.
Recently, it was experimentally realized that 2D superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) such as gated MoS$_2$ and monolayer NbSe$_2$ have in-plane upper critical magnetic fields much higher than the Pauli limit. This is due to the so-called Ising spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of TMD which pins the electron spins along the out-of-plane directions and protects the Cooper pairs from in-plane magnetic fields. However, many TMD materials with extremely large Ising SOC, in the order of a few hundred meV, are not superconducting. In this work, we show that TMD materials can induce strong …
We formulate a quantitative theory of non-local electron transport in three-terminal disordered ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet structures. We demonstrate that magnetic effects have different implications: While strong exchange field suppresses disorder-induced electron interference in ferromagnetic electrodes, spin-sensitive electron scattering at superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces can drive the total non-local conductance negative at sufficiently low energies. At higher energies magnetic effects become less important and the non-local resistance behaves similarly to the non-magneti…
Superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures exhibit a so-called long-range proximity effect provided some layers of conical magnet Holmium are included in the respective interface regions. The Ho layers lead to a spin-flip process at the interface generating equal-spin spin-triplet pairing correlations in the ferromagnet. These equal-spin spin-triplet pairing correlations penetrate much further into the heterostructure compared to the spin-singlet and unequal-spin spin-triplet correlations which occur in the absence of Ho. Here we present calculations of this effect based on the…
We present the generalized quasiclassical theory of the long-range superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with strong ferromagnets, where the exchange splitting is of the order of Fermi energy. In the ferromagnet the propagation of spin-triplet Cooper pairs residing on the spin-split Fermi surfaces is shown to be governed by the spin-dependent Abelian gauge field which results either from the spin-orbital coupling or from the magnetic texture. The additional gauge field enters into the quasiclassical equations in superposition with the usual electromagnetic vector potential and r…
We review the present status of the experimental and theoretical research on the proximity effect in heterostructures composed of superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) thin films. First, we discuss traditional effects originating from the oscillatory behavior of the superconducting pair wave function in the F-layer. Then, we concentrate on recent theoretical predictions for S/F layer systems. These are a) generation of odd triplet superconductivity in the F-layer and b) ferromagnetism induced in the S-layer below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ (inverse proximity effect)…
We study theoretically the influence of spin accumulation on superconductivity in a superconductor/ferromagnet bilayer. It is well-known that the superconductivity in S/F bilayers is suppressed by the proximity to a ferromagnet. The spin accumulation by itself is also a depairing factor. But here we show that creation of the spin accumulation on top of effective exchange depairing, caused by the proximity to a ferromagnet, can lead to an opposite result. The superconductivity can be partially recovered by spin-dependent quasiparticle distribution. The systems with realistic parameters are cons…
We theoretically study the proximity effect and the inverse proximity effect in a topological insulator/iron-based superconductor heterostructure based on the microscopic model. The superconducting order parameter is self-consistently calculated. Its magnitude decreases when the coupling of these two systems increases. The induced pairing order parameter exhibits negative and positive values, while the negative pairing near the $Γ=(0,0)$ point is dominant. This parameter has twofold symmetry and includes an $s$-wave component and a $d$-wave component. The magnitude of the induced pairing order…
The AC conduction of epitaxially-grown SmB$_6$ thin films and superconducting heterostructures of SmB$_6$/YB$_6$ are investigated via time domain terahertz spectroscopy. A two-channel model of thickness-dependent bulk states and thickness-independent surface states accurately describes the measured conductance of bare SmB$_6$ thin films, demonstrating the presence of surface states in SmB$_6$. While the observed reductions in the simultaneously-measured superconducting gap, transition temperature, and superfluid density of SmB$_6$/YB$_6$ heterostructures relative to bare YB$_6$ indicate the pe…
Unconventional superconductors have been long sought for their potential applications in quantum technologies and devices. A key challenge impeding this effort is the difficulty associated with probing and characterizing candidate materials and establishing their order parameter. In this Letter, we present a platform that allows us to spectroscopically probe unconventional superconductivity in thin-layer materials via the proximity effect. We show that inducing an s-wave gap in a sample with an intrinsic d-wave instability leads to the formation of bound-states of quasiparticle pairs, which ma…
The proximity effect, quasiparticle transport, and local magnetic moment in ferromagnet--d-wave superconductor junctions with {110}-oriented interface are studied by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations within an extended Hubbard model. It is found that the proximity induced order parameter oscillates in the ferromagnetic region. The modulation period is shortened with the increased exchange field while the oscillation amplitude is depressed by the interfacial scattering. With the determined superconducting energy gap, a transfer matrix method is proposed to compute the…

We report on the study of electron transport in the oxide heterostructures with superconductor/magnetic matter (S/M) interfaces where anomaly large penetration of superconducting correlations in magnetic matter (proximity effect) is realized. The developed theoretical model based on multilayer magnetic structure of M-interlayer and experiment show presence of the long-range proximity effect at S/M-interface with antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering of the interlayer magnetization. The investigated hybrid heterostructures include cuprate superconductor, the AF-cuprate interlayer and conventional sup…
We study the proximity effect in superconductor (S), antiferromagnetic (AF) bilayers, and report the fabrication and measurement of the first trilayer S/AF/S Josephson junctions. The disordered f.c.c. alloy γ-Fe50Mn50 was used as the AF, and the S is Nb. Micron and sub-micron scale junctions were measured, and the scaling of $J_C (d_AF)$ gives a coherence length in the AF of 2.4 nm, which correlates with the coherence length due to suppression of $T_C$ in the bilayer samples. The diffusion constant for FeMn was found to be 1.7 \times 10$^{-4}$ m$^2$ s$^-1$, and the density of states at the Fer…
The very special characteristic of the proximity effect in superconductor-ferromagnet systems is the damped oscillatory behavior of the Cooper pair wave function in a ferromagnet. In some sense, this is analogous to the inhomogeneous superconductivity, predicted long time ago by Larkin and Ovchinnikov (1964), and Fulde and Ferrell (1964), and constantly searched since that. After the qualitative analysis of the peculiarities of the proximity effect in the presence of the exchange field, the author provides a unified description of the properties of the superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructur…
Magnetization noncollinearity in ferromagnet-superconductor (F/S) heterostructures is expected to enhance the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) according to the domain-wall superconductivity theory, or to suppress Tc when spin-triplet Cooper pairs are explicitly considered. We study the proximity effect in F/S structures where the F layer is a Sm-Co/Py exchange-spring bilayer and the S layer is Nb. The exchange-spring contains a single, controllable and quantifiable domain wall in the Py layer. We observe an enhancement of superconductivity that is nonmonotonic as the Py domain wall …
The quasiclassical theory in terms of equations for the Green's functions (Eilenberger equations) is generalized in order to allow for quantitative description of the magneto-electric effects and proximity-induced triplet correlations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling in hybrid superconducting systems. The formalism is valid under the condition that the spin-orbit coupling is weak with respect to the Fermi energy, but exceeds the superconducting energy scale considerably. On the basis of the derived formalism it is shown that the triplet correlations in the spin-orbit coupled normal metal…
Mixing of topological states with superconductivity could result in topological superconductivity with the elusive Majorana fermions potentially applicable in fault-tolerant quantum computing. One possible candidate considered for realization of topological superconductivity is thin bismuth films on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). Here, we present angle-resolved and core-level photoemission spectroscopy studies of thin Bi films grown {\it in-situ} on as-grown Bi2212 that show the absence of proximity effect. We find that the electron transfer from the film to the substrate and the resu…
Despite its simple structure and low degree of electronic correlation, SrTiO$_3$ (STO) features collective phenomena linked to charge transport and, ultimately, superconductivity, that are not yet fully explained. Thus, a better insight in the nature of the quasiparticles shaping the electronic and conduction properties of STO is needed. We studied the low energy excitations of bulk STO and of the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by Ti L$_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In all samples, we find the hallmark of polarons in the form of intense $dd$+phonon e…
It has been shown that singlet Cooper pairs can be converted into triplet ones and diffuse into a ferromagnet over a long distance in a phenomenon known as the long-range proximity effect (LRPE). This happens in materials with inhomogeneous magnetism or spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Most of the previous studies focus on the cases with small SOC and exchange field. However, the physics was not clear when SOC and exchange field strength are both much greater than the disorder strength. In this work, we consider a two dimensional system with a large Rashba-type SOC and exchange field in the case whe…
The presence of a spin-flip potential at the interface between a superconductor and a ferromagnetic metal allows for the generation of equal-spin spin-triplet Cooper pairs. These Cooper pairs are compatible with the exchange interaction within the ferromagnetic region and hence allow for the long-range proximity effect through a ferromagnet or half-metal. One suitable spin-flip potential is provided by incorporating the conical magnet Holmium (Ho) into the interface. The conical magnetic structure is characterised by an opening angle $α$ with respect to the crystal $c$-axis and a turning (or p…
The proximity effect from a spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductor to a dirty normal-metal has been shown to result in various unusual electromagnetic properties, reflecting a cooperative relation between topologically protected zero-energy quasiparticles and odd-frequency Cooper pairs. However, because of a lack of candidate materials for spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductors, observing this effect has been difficult. In this paper, we demonstrate that the anomalous proximity effect, which is essentially equivalent to that of a spin-triplet $p_x$-wave superconductor, can occur in a semicond…
