We investigate the quantum dynamics of an experimentally realized spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential. The spin-orbit coupling can significantly enhance the atomic inter-well tunneling. We find the coexistence of internal and external Josephson effects in the system, which are moreover inherently coupled in a complicated form even in the absence of interatomic interactions. Moreover, we show that the spin-dependent tunneling between two wells can induce a net atomic spin current referred as spin Josephson effects. Such novel spin Josephson effects can be observable for realistically experimental conditions.
We study dynamical processes in coherently coupled atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Josephson effects in ring-shaped and dumbbell geometries are theoretically investigated. Conditions for observation of the Josephson effect are revealed. We found that multicharged persistent current in toroidal condensate can be robust even for supersonic atomic flow. In numerical simulations the acoustic analogues of event horizon in quantized superflow was observed. These theoretical finding open perspectives for investigation of Bose Josephson junctions and quantum aspects of acoustic analogue of Hawking r…
We analyze the dynamics of Josephson vortex states in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In 1D, both in homogeneous and harmonically trapped systems, we report on stationary states containing doubly charged, static Josephson vortices. In multidimensional systems, we find stable Josephson vortices in a regime of parameters typical of current experiments with $^{87}$Rb atoms. In addition, we discuss the instability regime of Josephson vortices in disk-shaped condensates, where the snake instability operates …
We study the dynamics of one-dimensional bosons trapped in a box potential, in the presence of a barrier creating a tunable weak-link, thus realizing a one dimensional Bose Josephson junction. By varying the initial population imbalance and the barrier height we evidence different dynamical regimes. In particular we show that at large barriers a two mode model captures accurately the dynamics, while for low barriers the dynamics involves dispersive shock waves and solitons. We study a quench protocol that can be readily implemented in experiments and show that self-trapping resonances can occu…
Josephson junctions are the basis for the most sensitive magnetic flux detectors, the definition of the unit volt by the Josephson voltage standard, and superconducting digital and quantum computing. They result from the coupling of two coherent quantum states, as they occur in superconductors, superfluids, atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, and exciton-polariton condensates. In their ground state, Josephson junctions are characterised by an intrinsic phase jump. Controlling this phase jump is fundamental for applications in computing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate controllable phase rela…
The stacks of Bose-Einstein condensates coupled by long Josephson junctions present a rich phenomenology feasible to experimental realization and specially suitable for technological applications as the nonlinear-optics and superconducting analogues have already proved. Among this, we show that transverse Bloch waves excited in arrays of one-dimensional coupled condensates can carry tunneling superflows whose dynamical stability depends on the quasimomentum. Across the stacks with periodic boundary conditions, forming closed ring-shaped systems, such Bloch states yield transverse Josephson vor…
We investigate the low-energy dynamics of two coupled anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensates forming a long Josephson junction. The theoretical study is performed in the framework of the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. We analyze the excitation spectrum of the coupled Bose condensates and show how low-energy excitations of the condensates lead to multiple-frequency oscillations of the atomic populations in the two wells. This analysis generalizes the standard bosnic Josephson euqation approach. We also develop a one-dimensional hydrodynamic mode…
We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of a weakly interacting Bose gas tightly confined to a highly elongated double well potential. We use a self-consistent time-dependent Hartree--Fock approximation in combination with a projection of the full three-dimensional theory to several coupled one-dimensional channels. This allows us to model the time-dependent splitting and phase imprinting of a gas initially confined to a single quasi one-dimensional potential well and obtain a microscopic description of the ensuing damped Josephson oscillations.
Josephson junctions are essential ingredients in the superconducting circuits used in many existing quantum technologies. Additionally, ultracold atomic quantum gases have also become essential platforms to study superfluidity. Here, we explore the analogy between superconductivity and superfluidity to present an intriguing effect caused by a thin finite barrier in a quasi-one-dimensional toroidal spinor Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC). In this system, the atomic current density flowing through the edges of the barrier oscillates, such as the electrical current through a Josephson junction in …
Atomtronics experiments with ultracold atomic gases allow us to explore quantum transport phenomena of a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Here, we focus on two-terminal transport of such a BEC in the vicinity of zero temperature. By using the tunnel Hamiltonian and Bogoliubov theory, we obtain a DC Josephson current expression in the BEC and apply it to experimentally relevant situations such as quantum point contact and planar junction. Due to the absence of Andreev bound states but the presence of couplings associated with condensation elements, a current-phase relation in …
We demonstrate the possibility to build stable Josephson $π$-junction stripes with exciton-polariton condensates. The stability of the $π$-junction between arbitrary long polariton stripes is achieved at low pumping by balancing the snaking instability with counter-propagating flows towards the junction. Not dissimilar from a dark soliton, the instability becomes relevant at high pumping leading to formation of vortex dipoles. The resulting structures can be stabilised to produce static lattices of Josephson vortices in straight and ring geometries. Our results build towards realization of qua…
We demonstrate that the two degenerate energy levels in spin-orbit coupled trapped Bose gases, coupled by a quenched Zeeman field, can be used for angular momentum Josephson effect. In a static quenched field, we can realize a Josephson oscillation with period ranging from millisecond to hundreds of milliseconds. Moreover, by a driven Zeeman field, we realize a new Josephson oscillation, in which the population imbalance may have the same expression as the current in the directed current (dc) Josephson effect. When the dynamics of condensate can not follow up the modulation frequency, it the s…
We theoretically study the effects of trap-confinement and interatomic interactions on Josephson oscillations (JO) and macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a trap which has a symmetric double-well (DW) potential along z-axis and 2D harmonic potentials along x- and y-axis. We consider three types of model interaction potentials: contact, long-range dipolar and finite-range potentials. Our results show that by changing the aspect ratio between the axial and radial trap sizes, one can induce a transition from JO to MQST for contact interactions…
We consider a model describing Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to a single bosonic mode exhibiting quantum phase transition (QPT). Onset of chaos above QPT is observed from semiclassical dynamics as well from spectral statistics. Based on entanglement entropy we analyze the ergodic behavior of eigenstates with increasing energy density which also reveals the influence of dynamical steady state known as $π$-mode on it. We identify the imprint of unstable $π$-oscillation as many body quantum scar (MBQS), which leads to the deviation from ergodicity and quantify the degree of scarring. Pers…
We discuss the effect of anomalous quantum-reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates as a screening effect, that is created by the condensate itself. We derive an effective, time-independent single-mode approach, that allows us to define different paths of reflection. We compare our theory with experimental results.
I present an interconversion currents algebra for an atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate model and use it to get the quantum dynamics of the currents. For different choices of the Hamiltonian parameters I get different currents dynamics.
