We discuss the effect of anomalous quantum-reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates as a screening effect, that is created by the condensate itself. We derive an effective, time-independent single-mode approach, that allows us to define different paths of reflection. We compare our theory with experimental results.
We study the quantum reflection of a two-dimensional disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with a dark-soliton excitation by a square potential barrier. For the giving geometry, the dark-soliton initially located at the centre of the condensate cloud survive long enough for investigating the reflection process. We show the time evolution of the reflection probability with respect to various width of the barrier. The asymptotic value of the reflection probability is decreased by the existence of a dark-soliton, and is highly sensitive to the initial orientation of the dark-soliton which also aff…
We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange cou…
We study tunneling properties of collective excitations in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. In the absence of magnetic fields, the total transmission in the long wavelength limit occurs in all kinds of excitations but the quadrupolar spin mode in the ferromagnetic state. The quadrupolar spin mode alone shows the total reflection. A difference between those excitations comes from whether the wavefunction of an excitation corresponds to that of the condensate in the long wavelength limit. The correspondence results in the total transmission as in the spinless BEC.
We propose different spectroscopic methods to explore the nature of the thermal excitations of a trapped Bose condensed gas: 1) a four photon process to probe the uniform region in the trap center: 2) a stimulated Raman process in order to analyze the influence of a momentum transfer in the resulting scattered atom momentum distribution. We apply these methods to address specifically the energy spectrum and the scattering amplitude of these excitations in a transition between two hyperfine levels of the gas atoms. In particular, we exemplify the potential offered by these proposed techniques b…
We investigate the tunneling properties of collective excitations through a domain wall in the ferromagnetic phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose--Einstein condensate. Within the mean-field theory at T=0, we show that the transverse spin wave undergoes perfect reflection in the low-energy limit. This reflection property differs considerably from that of a domain wall in a Heisenberg ferromagnet where spin-wave excitations exhibit perfect transmission at arbitrary energy. When the Bogoliubov mode is scattered from this domain wall soliton, the transmission and reflection coefficients exhibit pronounce…
We study the dynamic behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) containing a dark soliton separately reflected from potential drops and potential barriers. It is shown that for a rapidly varying potential and in a certain regime of incident velocity, the quantum reflection probability displays the cosine of the deflection angle between the incident soliton and the reflected soliton, i.e., $R(θ) \sim \cos 2θ$. For a potential drop, $R(θ)$ is susceptible to the widths of potential drop up to the length of the dark soliton and the difference of the reflection rates between the orientation angle…
The characteristic of the angular distributions of accelerated Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) atoms incidence on the surface is designed using the mathematical modeling method. Here, we proposed the idea to study the retroreflection and diffraction of a BEC from an evanescent standing wave potential (ESWP). The ESWP is formed by multiple reflections of the laser beam from the surface of the prism under the influence of gravity. After BEC's reflection and diffraction, the so-called BEC's density rainbow patterns develop due to the interference which depends on the surface structure which we mod…
The Nambu-Goldstone (NG) mode in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transmits a potential barrier with probability 1 in the zero-energy limit, which is known as the anomalous tunneling. In this paper, we investigate the tunneling properties of quasiparticles in a dynamically unstable BEC. We prepare a multi-component BEC (binary and spin-1 BEC) in a dynamically unstable state and solve the tunneling problem of the spin-wave excitation from the condensate. We find that the perfect transmission occurs even when the BEC is dynamically unstable if the spin-wave is the NG mode. Here, the mode that ex…
The scattering of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) from a Gaussian well and Gaussian barrier is investigated over a wide range of depths and heights, respectively. We compare analytical and numerical results for a BEC scattering from Gaussian Obstacles, both in the presence and in the absence of PT-symmetric potential. And we find out that the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation (CGLE) method has limitations due to the limited number of variational parameters of the ansatz. We also find that the presence of the PT-symmetric potential controls the reflection and the transmission flux of the BEC th…

We study the effect of disorder on the propagation of collective excitations in a disordered Bose superfluid. We incorporate local density depletion induced by strong disorder at the meanfield level, and formulate the transport of the excitations in terms of a screened scattering problem. We show that the competition of disorder, screening, and density depletion induces a strongly non-monotonic energy dependence of the disorder parameter. In three dimensions, it results in a rich localization diagram with four different classes of mobility spectra, characterized by either no or up to three mob…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in a very tight toroidal/annular trap, in the presence of a potential, which breaks the axial symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We investigate the stationary states of the condensate, when its density distribution co-rotates with the symmetry-breaking potential. As the strength of the potential increases, we have a gradual transition from vortex excitation to solid-body-like motion. Of particular importance are states where the system is static and yet it has a nonzero current/circulation, which is a realization of persistent currents/reflec…
We investigate the effects of an extended Bose-Hubbard model with a long range hopping term on the Mott insulator-superfluid quantum phase transition. We consider the effects of a power law decaying hopping term and show that the Mott phase is shrinked in the parameters' space. We provide an exact solution for one dimensional lattices and then two approximations for higher dimensions, each one valid in a specific range of the power law exponent: a continuum approximation and a discrete one. Finally, we extend these results to a more realistic situation, where the long range hopping term is mad…
We consider an interacting, one-dimensional Bose gas confined in a split trap, obtained by an harmonic potential with a localized barrier at its center. We address its quantum-transport properties through the study of dipolar oscillations, which are induced by a sudden quench of the position of the center of the trap. We find that the dipole-mode frequency strongly depends on the interaction strength between the particles, yielding information on the classical screening of the barrier and on its renormalization due to quantum fluctuations. Furthermore, we predict a parity effect which becomes …
We study the dynamics of quantum bosonic waves confined in a one-dimensional tilted optical lattice. The bosons are under the action of an effective spatially localized nonlinear two-body potential barrier set in the central part of the lattice. This version of the Bose-Hubbard model can be realized in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, by means of localized Feshbach resonance, and in quantum optics, using an arrayed waveguide with selectively doped guiding cores. Our numerical analysis demonstrates that the central barrier induces anomalous quantum reflection of incident wave packets acting so…
We report the observation of quantum reflection from a narrow, attractive, potential using bright solitary matter-waves formed from a 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. We create narrow potentials using a tightly focused, red-detuned laser beam, and observe reflection of up to 25% of the atoms, along with the trapping of atoms at the position of the beam. We show that the observed reflected fraction is much larger than theoretical predictions for a narrow Gaussian potential well; a more detailed model of bright soliton propagation, accounting for the generic presence of small subsidiary intensity …
We investigate tunneling properties of collective modes in the polar phase of a spin-1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. This spinor BEC state has two kinds of gapless modes, i.e., Bogoliubov mode and spin-wave. Within the framework of the mean-field theory at T=0, we show that these Goldstone modes exhibit the perfect transmission in the low-energy limit. Their anomalous tunneling behaviors still hold in the presence of superflow, except in the critical current state. In the critical current state, while the tunneling of Bogoliubov mode is accompanied by finite reflection, the spin-wave still …
We investigate tunneling of excitations across a potential barrier separating two spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. Using the mean-field theory at the absolute zero temperature, we determine transmission coefficients of excitations in the saturated magnetization state and unsaturated magnetization states. All excitations except the quadrupolar spin mode in the saturated magnetization state show the anomalous tunneling phenomenon characterized as perfect tunneling in the low momentum limit through a potential barrier. The quadrupolar spin mode in the saturated magnetization state, whose spectru…
We study the collision dynamics of two Bose-Einstein condensates with their dynamical wave functions modeled by a set of coupled, time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Beginning with an effective one-dimensional system, we identify regimes characterized by the relationship between inter- and intra-atomic interactions and the initial configuration of the system, akin to the equilibrium phase diagram of two interacting Bose condensates. We consider a dynamical setup in which two wave packets are initially at rest with a small separation about the center of an asymmetric harmonic trap. Upon …
The propagation of solitons in dipolar BEC in a trap potential with a barrier potential is investigated. The regimes of soliton transmission, reflection and splitting as a function of the ratio between the local and dipolar nonlocal interactions are analyzed analytically and numerically. Coherent splitting and fusion of the soliton by the defect is observed. The conditions for fusion of splitted solitons are found. In addition the delocalization transition governed by the strength of the nonlocal dipolar interaction is presented. Predicted phenomena can be useful for the design of a matter wav…
We study in detail the properties of pi-fluxes embedded in a state with a finite density of anyons that form either a Fermi liquid or a Bose-Einstein condensate. By employing a recently developed exact lattice bosonization in 2D, we demonstrate that such pi-flux remains a fully deconfined quasiparticle with a finite energy cost in a Fermi liquid of emergent fermions coupled to a Z2 gauge field. This pi-flux is accompanied by a screening cloud of fermions, which in the case of a Fermi gas with a parabolic dispersion binds exactly 1/8 of a fermionic hole. In addition there is a long-ranged power…
We calculate a measure of superposition macroscopicity $\mathcal{M}$ for a superposition of screening current states in a superconducting flux qubit (SFQ), by relating $\mathcal{M}$ to the action of an instanton trajectory connecting the potential wells of the flux qubit. When a magnetized Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) gas containing $N_{B}\sim \mathcal{O}(10^6)$ atoms is brought into a $\mathcal{O}(1)$ $μ\text{m}$ proximity of the flux qubit in an experimentally realistic geometry, we demonstrate the appearance of a two- to five-fold amplification of $\mathcal{M}$ over the bare value without …
A quantum vortex dipole, comprised of a closely bound pair of vortices of equal strength with opposite circulation, is a spatially localized travelling excitation of a planar superfluid that carries linear momentum, suggesting a possible analogy with ray optics. We investigate numerically and analytically the motion of a quantum vortex dipole incident upon a step-change in the background superfluid density of an otherwise uniform two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Due to the conservation of fluid momentum and energy, the incident and refracted angles of the dipole satisfy a relation ana…
We theoretically investigate superradiance effects in quantum field theories in curved space-times by proposing an analogue model based on Bose--Einstein condensates subject to a synthetic vector potential. The breaking of the irrotationality constraint of superfluids allows to study superradiance in simple planar geometries and obtain intuitive insight in the amplified scattering processes at ergosurfaces. When boundary conditions are modified allowing for reflections, dynamical instabilities are found, similar to the ones of ergoregions in rotating space-times. Their stabilization by horizon…
We study the condensation phenomenon for a system of charged bosons in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that condensation happens for a definite critical temperature instead of through a diffuse phase transition. The essential ingredient, overlooked in previous analyses and accounted for in this work, is the treatment of the plasma screening effects by means of resummation. We compute the critical temperature, for the case in which the condensate is made of charged pions and for typical densities found in compact astrophysical objects, for small and large values of the magne…
The reflectionless transmission resonances in above-barrier reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates by the Rosen-Morse potential are considered using the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii approach. Applying an exact third order nonlinear differential equation obeyed by the condensate's density, the exact solution of the problem for the first resonance is derived. It is shown that in the nonlinear case the total transmission is possible for positive potential heights, i.e., for potential barriers. Further, it is shown that an appropriate approximation for higher-order resonances can be constructed us…
Supersolidity is an intriguing concept. It combines the property of superfluid flow with the long-range spatial periodicity of solids, two properties which are often mutually exclusive. The original discussion of quantum crystals and supersolidity focuses on solid Helium-4 where it was predicted that vacancies could form dilute weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. In this system, direct observation of supersolidity has been elusive. The concept of supersolidity was then generalized to include other superfluid systems which break the translational symmetry of space. One of such systems…
In this paper we study the scattering of solitons in a binary Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) including SO- and Rabi-couplings. To this end, we derive a reduced ODE model in view to provide a variational description of the collisional dynamics. Also, we assume negative intra- and inter-component interaction strengths, such that one obtains localized solutions even in absence of external potentials. By performing extensive numerical simulations of this model we observe that, for specific conditions, the final propagation velocity of the scattered solitons could be highly sensitive to small chang…
Spin-orbit (SO) coupling can be introduced in a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) as a gauge potential acting only in a localized spatial domain. Effect of such a SO "defect" can be understood by transforming the system to the integrable vector model. The properties of the SO-BEC change drastically if the SO defect is accompanied by the Zeeman splitting. In such a non-integrable system, the SO defect qualitatively changes the character of soliton interactions and allows for formation of stable nearly scalar soliton complexes with almost all atoms concentrated in only one dark state. These solito…
We construct a theory for Bose-Einstein condensation of light in nano-fabricated semiconductor microcavities. We model the semiconductor by one conduction and one valence band which consist of electrons and holes that interact via a Coulomb interaction. Moreover, we incorporate screening effects by using a contact interaction with the scattering length for a Yukawa potential and describe in this manner the crossover from exciton gas to electron-hole plasma as we increase the excitation level of the semiconductor. We then show that the dynamics of the light in the microcavities is damped due to…
We consider the propagation of quasiparticle excitations in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, and derive a nonlocal field theory of quasiparticle scattering at a stepwise inhomogeneity of the sound speed, obtained by tuning the contact coupling part of the interaction on one side of the barrier. To solve this problem $ab$ $initio$, i.e., without prior assumptions on the form of the solutions, we reformulate the dipolar Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation as a singular integral equation. The latter is of a $novel$ $hypersingular$ type, in having a kernel which is hypersingular at only two isolated …
We describe the behavior of a repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of indirect dipolar exciton gas in a double quantum well (QW) system under external static or dynamic electric fields at finite temperatures. Electrostatic perturbation is considered to be created by an impurity atom or shot-range defect of QW fluctuation. The screening of this defect potential by an exciton condensate is studied. We find asymptotic spatial dependence of the screened potential and analyse its dependence on the temperature and exciton concentration. It is shown that the asymptotic of the screened pot…
Additional scalar fields from scalar-tensor, modified gravity or higher dimensional theories beyond general relativity may account for dark energy and the accelerating expansion of the Universe. These theories have lead to proposed models of screening mechanisms, such as chameleon and symmetron fields, to account for the tight experimental bounds on fifth-force searches. Cold atom systems have been very successfully used to constrain the parameters of these screening models, and may in future eliminate the interesting parameter space of some models entirely. In this paper, we show how to manip…
Quantum dynamics of impurities in a bath of bosons is a long-standing problem of solid-state, plasma, and atomic physics. Recent experimental and theoretical investigations with ultracold atoms focused on this problem, studying atomic impurities immersed in a atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and for various relative coupling strengths tuned by the Fano-Feshbach resonance technique. Here we report extensive numerical simulations on a closely related problem: the collision between a bosonic impurity made of few $^{41}$K atoms and a BEC made of $^{87}$Rb atoms in a quasi one-dimensional conf…
