We present high-cadence observations and simulations of the solar photosphere, obtained using the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere imaging system and the MuRAM magneto-hydrodynamic code, respectively. Each dataset demonstrates a wealth of magneto-acoustic oscillatory behaviour, visible as periodic intensity fluctuations with periods in the range 110-600 s. Almost no propagating waves with periods less than 140s and 110s are detected in the observational and simulated datasets, respectively. High concentrations of power are found in highly magnetised regions, such as magnetic bright points and intergranular lanes. Radiative diagnostics of the photospheric simulations replicate our observational results, confirming that the current breed of magneto-hydrodynamic simulations are able to accurately represent the lower solar atmosphere. All observed oscillations are generated as a result of naturally occurring magnetoconvective processes, with no specific input driver present. Using contribution functions extracted from our numerical simulations, we estimate minimum G-band and 4170 Angstrom continuum formation heights of 100 km and 25 km, respectively. Detected magneto-acoustic oscillations exhibit a dominant phase delay of -8 degrees between the G-band and 4170 Angstrom continuum observations, suggesting the presence of upwardly propagating waves. More than 73% of MBPs (73% from observations, 96% from simulations) display upwardly propagating wave phenomena, suggesting the abundant nature of oscillatory behaviour detected higher in the solar atmosphere may be traced back to magnetoconvective processes occurring in the upper layers of the Sun's convection zone.
We present a Bayesian seismology inversion technique for propagating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) transverse waves observed in coronal waveguides. The technique uses theoretical predictions for the spatial damping of propagating kink waves in transversely inhomogeneous coronal waveguides. It combines wave amplitude damping length scales along the waveguide with theoretical results for resonantly damped propagating kink waves to infer the plasma density variation across the oscillating structures. Provided the spatial dependence of the velocity amplitude along the propagation direction is measured…
The subject of this study is oscillations in the lower atmosphere in coronal-hole regions, where the conditions are favorable for propagation between the atmospheric layers. Based on spectroscopic observations in photospheric and chromospheric lines, we analysed the features of the oscillations that show signs of propagation between layers of the solar atmosphere. Using the cross-spectrum wavelet algorithm, we found that both chromospheric and photospheric signals under coronal holes share a range of significant oscillations of periods around five minutes, while the signals outside of coronal …
The source of the non-thermal energy required for the heating of the upper solar atmosphere to temperatures in excess of a million degrees and the acceleration of the solar wind to hundreds of kilometres per second is still unclear. One such mechanism for providing the required energy flux is incompressible torsional Alfvén and kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves, which are magnetically dominated waves supported by the Sun's pervasive and complex magnetic field. In particular, propagating MHD kink waves have recently been observed to be ubiquitous throughout the solar atmosphere, but, until n…
Alfvenic waves are thought to play an important role in coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. Recent observations by Hinode/SOT showed that the spicules mostly exhibit upward propagating high frequency waves. Here we investigate the dissipation of such waves due to phase mixing in stratified environment of solar spicules. Since they are highly dynamic structures with speeds at about significant fractions of the Alfven phase speed, we take into account the effects of steady flows. Our numerical simulations show that in the presence of stratification due to gravity, damping takes place in…
The propagation of linear transverse waves along a thin isothermal magnetic flux tube is affected by a global cutoff frequency that separates propagating and non-propagating waves. In this paper, wave propagation along a thin but non-isothermal flux tube is considered and a local cutoff frequency is derived. The effects of different temperature profiles on this local cutoff frequency are studied by considering different power-law temperature distributions as well as the semi-empirical VAL C model of the solar atmosphere. The results show that the conditions for wave propagation strongly depend…
Internal gravity waves have been observed in the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, on Mars and Jupiter, and in the Sun's atmosphere. Despite ample evidence for the existence of propagating gravity waves in the Sun's atmosphere, we still do not have a full understanding of their characteristics and overall role for the dynamics and energetics of the solar atmosphere. Here we present a new approach to study the propagation of gravity waves in the solar atmosphere. It is based on calculating the three-dimensional cross-correlation function between the vertical velocities measured at different height…
Recent high-resolution observations of sunspot oscillations using simultaneously operated ground- and space-based telescopes reveal the intrinsic connection between different layers of the solar atmosphere. However, it is not clear whether these oscillations are externally driven or generated in-situ. We address this question by using observations of propagating slow magneto-acoustic waves along a coronal fan loop system. In addition to the generally observed decreases in oscillation amplitudes with distance, the observed wave amplitudes are also found to be modulated with time, with similar v…
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) waves are large-scale propagating disturbances observed in the solar corona, frequently associated with coronal mass ejections and flares. They appear as faint, extended structures propagating from a source region across the structured solar corona. Since their discovery, over two hundred papers discussing their properties, causes and physical nature have been published. However, despite this their fundamental properties and the physics of their interactions with other solar phenomena are still not understood. To further the understanding of EUV waves, we have constru…
We describe the presence of wavefront dislocations in magnetohydrodynamic waves in stratified stellar atmospheres. Scalar dislocations such as edges and vortices can appear in Alfvén waves, as well as in general magneto-acoustic waves. We detect those dislocations in observations of magnetohydrodynamic waves in sunspots in the solar chromosphere. Through the measured charge of all the dislocations observed, we can give for the first time estimates of the modal contribution in the waves propagating along magnetic fields in solar sunspots.
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the solar atmosphere are often performed under the assumption that the plasma is fully ionized. However, in the lower solar atmosphere a reduced temperature often results in only the partial ionization of the plasma. The interaction between the decoupled neutral and ionized components of such a partially ionized plasma produces ambipolar diffusion. To investigate the role of ambipolar diffusion in propagating wave characteristics in the photosphere and chromosphere, we employ the Mancha3D numerical code to model magnetoacoustic waves propagating through…
Observations show that propagating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere. The technique of MHD seismology uses the wave observations combined with MHD wave theory to indirectly infer physical parameters of the solar atmospheric plasma and magnetic field. Here we present an analytical seismological inversion scheme for propagating MHD waves. This scheme uses in a consistent manner the observational information on wavelengths and damping lengths, along with observed values of periods or phase velocities, and is based on approximate asymptotic expressions for the …
The magnetic switchbacks observed recently by the Parker Solar Probe have raised the question about their nature and origin. One of the competing theories of their origin is the interchange reconnection in the solar corona. In this scenario, switchbacks are generated at the reconnection site between open and closed magnetic fields, and are either advected by an upflow or propagate as waves into the solar wind. In this paper we test the wave hypothesis, numerically modelling the propagation of a switchback, modelled as an embedded Alfvén wave packet of constant magnetic field magnitude, through…
Quasi-periodic propagating disturbances (PDs) are ubiquitous in polar coronal holes on the Sun. It remains unclear as to what generates PDs. In this work, we investigate how the PDs are generated in the solar atmosphere by analyzing a fourhour dataset taken by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We find convincing evidence that spicular activities in the solar transition region as seen in the AIA 304 Å passband are responsible for PDs in the corona as revealed in the AIA 171 Å images. We conclude that spicules are an important source that trigg…
RRab stars are large amplitude pulsating stars in which the pulsation is associated with strong shock wake propagating in the atmosphere. The objective of this study is to provide a general overview of the dynamical structure of the atmosphere occurring over a typical pulsation cycle. We report new high-resolution observations with high time resolution of H$α$ and sodium lines in the brightest RR Lyrae star of the sky: RR Lyr (HD 182989). A detailed analysis of line profile variations over the whole pulsation cycle is performed to understand the dynamical structure of the atmosphere. The main …
Recurrent, arc-shaped intensity disturbances were detected by EUV channels in an active region. The fronts were observed to propagate along a coronal loop bundle rooted in a small area within a sunspot umbra. Previous works have linked these intensity disturbances to slow magnetoacoustic waves that propagate from the lower atmosphere to the corona along the magnetic field. The slow magnetoacoustic waves propagate at the local cusp speed. However, the measured propagation speeds from the intensity images are usually smaller as they are subject to projection effects due to the inclination of the…

We present simulations of magneto-acoustic wave propagation in a magnetic, plane-parallel stratified solar model atmosphere, employing the CO5BOLD-code. The tests are carried out for two models of the solar atmosphere, which are similar to the ones used by Cally (2007) and Schunker & Cally (2006). The two models differ only in the orientation of the magnetic field. A qualitative comparison shows good agreement between the numerical results and the results from ray theory. The tests are done in view of the application of the present numerical code for the computation of energy fluxes of propaga…
We study the physical properties and behavior of the solar atmosphere during the GOES X1.6 solar flare on 2014 September 10. The steady plasma flows and the fast sausage MHD waves were analysed with the wavelet separation method. The magnetically coupled atmosphere and the forced magnetic field reconnection were studied with the help of the Vertical-Current Approximation Non-linear Force-Free Field code. We studied a mechanism of MHD wave transfer from the photosphere without dissipation or reflection before reaching the corona and a mechanism of the wave energy distribution over the solar cor…
There is observational evidence of propagating kink waves driven by photospheric motions. These disturbances, interpreted as kink magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are attenuated as they propagate upwards in the solar corona. In this paper we show that resonant absorption provides a simple explanation to the spatial damping of these waves. Kink MHD waves are studied using a cylindrical model of solar magnetic flux tubes which includes a non-uniform layer at the tube boundary. Assuming that the frequency is real and the longitudinal wavenumber complex, the damping length and damping per wavelengt…
Magnetohydrodynamic waves interact with structured plasmas and reveal the internal magnetic and thermal structures therein, thereby having seismological applications in the solar atmosphere. We investigate the evolution of fast magnetoacoustic pulses in randomly structured plasmas, in the context of large-scale propagating waves in the solar atmosphere. We perform one dimensional numerical simulations of fast wave pulses propagating perpendicular to a constant magnetic field in a low-$β$ plasma with a random density profile across the field. Both linear and nonlinear regimes are considered. We…
The presence of turbulent phenomena in the outer solar atmosphere is a given. However, because we are reduced to remotely sensing the atmosphere of a star with instruments of limited spatial and/or spectral resolution, we can only infer the physical progression from macroscopic to microscopic phenomena. Even so, we know that many, if not all, of the turbulent phenomena that pervade interplanetary space have physical origins at the Sun and so in this brief article we consider some recent measurements which point to sustained potential source(s) of heliospheric turbulence in the magnetic and the…
The aim of this work is to study the energy transport by means of MHD waves propagating in quiet Sun magnetic topology from layers below the surface to the corona. Upward propagating waves find obstacles, such as the equipartition layer with plasma b=1 and the transition region, and get converted, reflected and refracted. Understanding the mechanisms by which MHD waves can reach the corona can give us information about the solar atmosphere and the magnetic structures. We carry out two-dimensional numerical simulations of wave propagation in a magnetic field structure that consists of two verti…
An isolated, isothermal, and wide magnetic flux tube embedded either in the solar chromosphere or in the lower solar corona is considered, and the propagation of linear torsional Alfv'en waves is investigated. It is shown that the wideness of the tube leads to a new cutoff frequency, which is a local quantity that gives the conditions for the wave propagation at different atmospheric heights. The cutoff is used to establish the ranges of frequencies for the propagating and reflected waves in the solar chromosphere and lower solar corona. The obtained results are compared to those previously ob…
Acoustic waves and pulses propagating from the solar photosphere upwards may quickly develop into shocks due to the rapid decrease of atmospheric density. However, if they propagate along a magnetic flux tube, then the nonlinear steepening may be balanced by tube dispersion effects. This may result in the formation of sausage soliton. The aim of this letter is to report an observational evidence of sausage soliton in the solar chromosphere. Time series of Ca II H line obtained at the solar limb with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on the board of Hinode is analysed. Observations show an inte…
The suitability of solar pores as magnetic wave guides has been a key topic of discussion in recent years. Here we present observational evidence of propagating magnetohydrodynamic wave activity in a group of five photospheric solar pores. Employing data obtained by the Facility Infrared Spectropolarimeter at the Dunn Solar Telescope, oscillations with periods on the order of 5 minutes were detected at varying atmospheric heights by examining Si I 10827 Å line bisector velocities. Spectropolarimetric inversions, coupled with the spatially resolved root mean square bisector velocities, allowed …
White-light flares (WLFs), first observed in 1859, refer to a type of solar flares showing an obvious enhancement of the visible continuum emission. This type of enhancement often occurs in most energetic flares, and is usually interpreted as a consequence of efficient heating in the lower solar atmosphere through non-thermal electrons propagating downward from the energy release site in the corona. However, this coronal-reconnection model has difficulty in explaining the recently discovered small WLFs. Here we report a C2.3 white-light flare, which are associated with several observational ph…
It has been shown that resonant absorption is a robust physical mechanism to explain the observed damping of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in the solar atmosphere due to naturally occurring plasma inhomogeneity in the direction transverse to the direction of the magnetic field. Theoretical studies of this damping mechanism were greatly inspired by the first observations of post-flare standing kink modes in coronal loops using the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer (TRACE). More recently, these studies have been extended to explain the attenuation of propagating coronal kink waves ob…
The next decade will be an exciting period for solar astrophysics, as new ground- and space-based instrumentation will provide unprecedented observations of the solar atmosphere and heliosphere. The synergy between modeling effort and comprehensive analysis of observations is crucial for the understanding of the physical processes behind the observed phenomena. However, the unprecedented wealth of data on one hand, and the complexity of the physical phenomena on the other, require the development of new approaches in both data analysis and numerical modeling. In this white paper, we summarize …
The detection of upward propagating internal gravity waves at the base of the Sun's chromosphere has recently been reported by Straus et al., who postulated that these may efficiently couple to Alfven waves in magnetic regions. This may be important in transporting energy to higher levels. Here we explore the propagation, reflection and mode conversion of linear gravity waves in a VAL C atmosphere, and find that even weak magnetic fields usually reflect gravity waves back downward as slow magnetoacoustic waves well before they reach the Alfven/acoustic equipartition height at which mode conver…
We present the results of three-dimensional (3D) ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations on the dynamics of a perpendicularly inhomogeneous plasma disturbed by propagating Alfvénic waves. Simpler versions of this scenario have been extensively studied as the phenomenon of phase mixing. We show that, by generalizing the textbook version of phase mixing, interesting phenomena are obtained, such as turbulence-like behavior and complex current-sheet structure, a novelty in longitudinally homogeneous plasma excited by unidirectionally propagating waves. This constitutes an important finding fo…
A sunspot is an ideal waveguide for a variety of magnetohydrodynamic waves, which carry a significant amount of energy to the upper atmosphere and could be used as a tool to probe magnetic and thermal structure of a sunspot. In this study, we used the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and took high-resolution image sequences simultaneously in both TiO (7058$\pm$10 Å) and H$_α$ (6562$\pm$2.5 Å) bandpasses. We extracted the area and total emission intensity variations of sunspot umbra and analyzed the signals with synchrosqueezing transform. We found that the area and emission intensity varied with bot…
Modelling of adiabatic gravity wave propagation in the solar atmosphere showed that mode conversion to field guided acoustic waves or Alfvén waves was possible in the presence of highly inclined magnetic fields. This work aims to extend the previous adiabatic study, exploring the consequences of radiative damping on the propagation and mode conversion of gravity waves in the solar atmosphere. We model gravity waves in a VAL-C atmosphere, subject to a uniform, and arbitrarily orientated magnetic field, using the Newton cooling approximation for radiatively damped propagation. The results indica…

Recent observations have revealed that MHD waves and oscillations are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere, with a wide range of periods. We give a brief review of some aspects of MHD waves and coronal seismology which have recently been the focus of intense debate or are newly emerging. In particular, we focus on four topics: (i) the current controversy surrounding propagating intensity perturbations along coronal loops, (ii) the interpretation of propagating transverse loop oscillations, (iii) the ongoing search for coronal (torsional) Alfven waves and (iv) the rapidly developing topic of quas…
Coronal holes are the coolest and darkest regions of the solar atmosphere, as observed both on the solar disk and above the solar limb. Coronal holes are associated with rapidly expanding open magnetic fields and the acceleration of the high-speed solar wind. During the years of the solar minima, coronal holes are generally confined to the Sun's polar regions, while at solar maxima they can also be found at lower latitudes. Waves, observed via remote sensing and detected in-situ in the wind streams, are most likely responsible for the wind and several theoretical models describe the role of MH…
Stokes inversion codes are crucial in returning properties of the solar atmosphere, such as temperature and magnetic field strength. However, the success of such algorithms to return reliable values can be hindered by the presence of oscillatory phenomena within magnetic wave guides. Returning accurate parameters is crucial to both magnetohydrodynamics studies and solar physics in general. Here, we employ a simulation featuring propagating MHD waves within a flux tube with a known driver and atmospheric parameters. We invert the Stokes profiles for the 6301 $\unicode{0xc5}$ and 6302 $\unicode{…
A crucial feature not widely accounted for in local helioseismology is that surface magnetic regions actually open a window from the interior into the solar atmosphere, and that the seismic waves leak through this window, reflect high in the atmosphere, and then re-enter the interior to rejoin the seismic wave field normally confined there. In a series of recent numerical studies using translation invariant atmospheres, we utilised a "directional time-distance helioseismology" measurement scheme to study the implications of the returning fast and Alfvén waves higher up in the solar atmosphere …
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves have been considered as energy sources for heating the solar chromosphere and the corona. Although MHD waves have been observed in the solar atmosphere, there are a lack of quantitative estimates on the energy transfer and dissipation in the atmosphere. We performed simultaneous Hinode and IRIS observations of a sunspot umbra to derive the upward energy fluxes at two different atmospheric layers (photosphere and lower transition region) and estimate the energy dissipation. The observations revealed some properties of the observed periodic oscillations in physica…
The present study addresses the following questions: How representative of the actual velocities in the solar atmosphere are the Doppler shifts of spectral lines? How reliable is the velocity signal derived from narrowband filtergrams? How well defined is the height of the measured Doppler signal? Why do phase difference spectra always pull to 0 degrees phase lag at high frequencies? Can we actually observe high frequency waves (P<= 70s)? What is the atmospheric MTF of high frequency waves? How reliably can we determine the energy flux of high frequency waves? We address these questions by com…
We use high spatial and temporal resolution observations, simultaneously obtained with the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, to investigate the high-frequency oscillations above a sunspot umbra. A novel time--frequency analysis method, namely the synchrosqueezing transform (SST), is employed to represent their power spectra and to reconstruct the high-frequency signals at different solar atmospheric layers. A validation study with synthetic signals demonstrates that SST is capable to resolving weak signals even when their…
Propagating transverse waves are thought to be a key transporter of Poynting flux throughout the Sun's atmosphere. Recent studies have shown that these transverse motions, interpreted as the magnetohydrodynamic kink mode, are prevalent throughout the corona. The associated energy estimates suggest the waves carry enough energy to meet the demands of the coronal radiative losses in the quiescent Sun. However, it is still unclear how the waves deposit their energy into the coronal plasma. We present the results from a large-scale study of propagating kink waves in the quiescent corona using data…
The lower solar atmosphere is an intrinsically multi-component and collisional environment with electron and proton collision frequencies in the range $10^{8}-10^{10}$ Hz, which may be considerably higher than the gyro-frequencies for both species. We aim to provide a reliable quantitative set of data for collision frequencies, magnetization, viscosity, and thermal conductivity for the most important species in the lower solar atmosphere. Having such data at hand is essential for any modeling that is aimed at describing realistic properties of the considered environment. We describe the altitu…
Observations show the ubiquitous presence of propagating magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in the solar atmosphere. Waves and flows are often observed simultaneously. Due to plasma inhomogeneity in the perpendicular direction to the magnetic field, kink waves are spatially damped by resonant absorption. The presence of flow may affect the wave spatial damping. Here, we investigate the effect of longitudinal background flow on the propagation and spatial damping of resonant kink waves in transversely nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. We combine approximate analytical theory with numerical inve…
Large-scale, wave-like disturbances in extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and type II radio bursts are often associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Both phenomena may signify shock waves driven by CMEs. Taking EUV full-disk images at an unprecedented cadence, the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory has observed the so-called EIT waves or large-scale coronal propagating fronts (LCPFs) from their early evolution, which coincides with the period when most metric type II bursts occur. This article discusses the relation of LCPFs as captured by AIA with metric t…
Rapidly oscillating Ap stars exhibit an astrophysically interesting combination of strong, dipolar-like magnetic fields and high-overtone p-mode pulsations similar to the Sun. Recent time-resolved spectroscopy of these stars unravelled a complex picture of propagating magneto-acoustic pulsation waves, with amplitude and phase strongly changing as a function of atmospheric height. To interpret these observations and gain a new insight into the atmospheric dynamics of roAp stars we have carried out 2-D time-dependent, non-linear magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of waves for a realistic atmosph…
Future ground-based telescopes will expand our capabilities for simultaneous multi-line polarimetric observations in a wide range of wavelengths, from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. This creates a strong demand to compare candidate spectral lines to establish a guideline of the lines that are most appropriate for each observation target. We focused in this first work on Zeeman-sensitive photospheric lines in the visible and infrared. We first examined their polarisation signals and response functions using a 1D semi-empirical atmosphere. Then we studied the spatial distribution of …

With the adaptation of the FLASH code we simulate magnetohydrodynamic-gravity waves and vortices as well as their response in the magnetized three-dimensional (3D) solar atmosphere at different heights to understand the localized energy transport processes. In the solar atmosphere strongly structured by gravitational and magnetic forces, we launch a localized velocity pulse (in horizontal and vertical components) within a bottom layer of 3D solar atmosphere modelled by initial VAL-IIIC conditions, which triggers waves and vortices. The rotation direction of vortices depends on the orientation …
In stratified atmospheres, acoustic waves can only propagate if their frequency is above the cutoff value. Different theories provide different cutoff values. We developed an alternative method to derive the cutoff frequency in several standard solar models, including various quiet-Sun and umbral atmospheres. We performed numerical simulations of wave propagation in the solar atmosphere. The cutoff frequency is determined from the inspection of phase difference spectra computed between the velocity signal at two atmospheric heights. The process is performed by choosing pairs of heights across …
Sausage modes are important in coronal seismology. Spatially damped propagating sausage waves were recently observed in the solar atmosphere. We examine how wave leakage influences the spatial damping of sausage waves propagating along coronal structures modeled by a cylindrical density enhancement embedded in a uniform magnetic field. Working in the framework of cold magnetohydrodynamics, we solve the dispersion relation (DR) governing sausage waves for complex-valued longitudinal wavenumber $k$ at given real angular frequencies $ω$. For validation purposes, we also provide analytical approxi…
We present 3D numerical simulations and an analytic model of reflection-driven MHD turbulence in the solar wind. Our simulations describe transverse, non-compressive MHD fluctuations within a narrow magnetic flux tube that extends from the photosphere out to a heliocentric distance $r$ of 21 solar radii $(R_s)$. We launch outward-propagating "$z^+$ fluctuations" into the simulation domain by imposing a randomly evolving photospheric velocity field. As these fluctuations propagate away from the Sun, they undergo partial reflection, producing inward-propagating "$z^-$ fluctuations." Counter-prop…
Context. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere. In magnetic waveguides resonant absorption due to plasma inhomogeneity naturally transfers wave energy from large-scale motions to small-scale motions. In the cooler parts of the solar atmosphere as, e.g., the chromosphere, effects due to partial ionization may be relevant for wave dynamics and heating. Aims. We study resonant Alfven waves in partially ionized plasmas. Methods. We use the multifluid equations in the cold plasma approximation. We investigate propagating resonant MHD waves in partially ionized flux …
The quantification of all possible waves and instabilities in a given system is of paramount importance, and knowledge of the full magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) spectrum allows one to predict the (in)stability of a given equilibrium state. This is highly relevant in many (astro)physical disciplines, and when applied to the solar atmosphere it may yield various new insights in processes like prominence formation and coronal loop oscillations. In this work we present a detailed, high-resolution spectroscopic study of the solar atmosphere, where we use our newly developed Legolas code to calculate th…
This publication provides an overview of magnetic fields in the solar atmosphere with the focus lying on the corona. The solar magnetic field couples the solar interior with the visible surface of the Sun and with its atmosphere. It is also responsible for all solar activity in its numerous manifestations. Thus, dynamic phenomena such as coronal mass ejections and flares are magnetically driven. In addition, the field also plays a crucial role in heating the solar chromosphere and corona as well as in accelerating the solar wind. Our main emphasis is the magnetic field in the upper solar atmos…
