The aim of this work is to study the energy transport by means of MHD waves propagating in quiet Sun magnetic topology from layers below the surface to the corona. Upward propagating waves find obstacles, such as the equipartition layer with plasma b=1 and the transition region, and get converted, reflected and refracted. Understanding the mechanisms by which MHD waves can reach the corona can give us information about the solar atmosphere and the magnetic structures. We carry out two-dimensional numerical simulations of wave propagation in a magnetic field structure that consists of two vertical flux tubes separated by an arcade shaped magnetic field. This configuration contains a null point in the corona, that significantly modifies the behaviour of the waves. We describe in detail the wave propagation through the atmosphere under different driving conditions. We also present the spatial distribution of the mean acoustic and magnetic energy fluxes and the spatial distribution of the dominant frequencies in the whole domain. We conclude that the energy reaches the corona preferably along vertical magnetic fields, inside the flux tubes, and it has an acoustic nature. Most of the magnetic energy keeps concentrated below the transition region due to the refraction of the magnetic waves and the continuous conversion of acoustic-like waves into fast magnetic waves in the equipartition layer located in the photosphere. However, part of the magnetic energy reaches the low corona when propagating in the region where the arcades are located, but waves are sent back downwards to the lower atmosphere at the null point surroundings. This phenomenon, together with the reflection and refraction of waves in the TR and the lower turning point, act as a re-feeding of the atmosphere. In the frequency distribution, we find that high frequency waves can reach the corona outside the vertical flux tubes.
We analyse intensity variations, as measured by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) in the 171 Å passband, in two coronal loops embedded within a single coronal magnetic arcade. We detect oscillations in the fundamental mode with periods of roughly 2 minutes and decay times of 5 minutes. The oscillations were initiated by interaction of the arcade with a large wavefront issuing from a flare site. Further, the power spectra of the oscillations evince signatures consistent with oblique propagation to the field lines and for the existence of a 2-D waveguide instead of a 1-D one.
We investigate the triggering mechanisms of plasma eruptions in the solar atmosphere due to interactions between emerging flux and coronal arcade fields by using two-dimensional MHD simulations. We perform parameter surveys with respect to arcade field height, magnetic field strength, and emerging flux location. Our results show that two possible mechanisms exist, and which mechanism is dominant depends mostly on emerging flux location. One mechanism appears when the location of emerging flux is close to the polarity inversion line (PIL) of an arcade field. This mechanism requires reconnection…
We investigate the temporal evolution of impulsively generated perturbations in a potential coronal arcade with an embedded loop. As the initial configuration we consider a coronal loop, represented by a density enhancement, which is unbounded in the ignorable direction of the arcade. The linearized time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic equations have been numerically solved in field-aligned coordinates and the time evolution of the initial perturbations has been studied in the zero-beta approximation. For propagation constrained to the plane of the arcade, the considered initial perturbations do…
This paper presents multiwavelength observations of a flare-generated type II radio burst. The kinematics of the shock derived from the type II closely match a fast EUV wave seen propagating through coronal arcade loops. The EUV wave was closely associated with an impulsive M1.0 flare without a related coronal mass ejection, and was triggered at one of the footpoints of the arcade loops in active region NOAA 12035. It was initially observed in the AIA 335 Å images with a speed of ~800 km/s and accelerated to ~1490 km/s after passing through the arcade loops. A fan-spine magnetic topology was r…
The pre-CME structure is of great importance to understanding the origin of CMEs, which, however, has been largely unknown for CMEs originating from active regions. In this paper, selected for studying are 16 active-region coronal arcades whose gradual inflation lead up to CMEs. 12 of them clearly build upon post-eruptive arcades resulting from a preceding eruption. The observed inflation sustains for 8.7 +/- 4.1 h, with the arcade rising from 1.15 +/- 0.06 Rsun to 1.36 +/- 0.07 Rsun within the EIT field of view (FOV). The rising speed is less than 5 km s-1 for most of the time. Only at the en…
We report on the first direct observation of a fast-mode wave propagating along and perpendicular to cool (171 Å) arcade loops observed by the SDO/AIA. The wave was associated with an impulsive/compact flare, near the edge of a sunspot. The EUV wavefront expanded radially outward from the flare center and decelerated in the corona from 1060-760 km/s within ~3-4 minute. Part of the EUV wave propagated along a large-scale arcade of cool loops and was partially reflected back to the flare site. The phase speed of the wave was about 1450 km/s, which is interpreted as a fast-mode wave. A second ove…
The normal modes of oscillation for a magnetic arcade are used to analytically solve an initial value problem and estimate the power spectra of wave frequencies generated by a reconnection event in the solar corona. Over a realistic range of parameters, I find that such a disturbance generates a peak power at $\sim10$s$\mathrm{mHz}$ frequencies, but still substantial power up to $\sim4\mathrm{Hz}$. The cadence and sensitivity of current instrumentation does not allow observations of oscillations at these frequencies, but in the near future, new instrumentation will be able to probe this regime…
The coronal magnetic field is the primary driver of solar dynamic events. Linear and circular polarization signals of certain infrared coronal emission lines contain information about the magnetic field, and to access this information, either a forward or an inversion method must be used. We study three coronal magnetic configurations that are applicable to polar-crown filament cavities by doing forward calculations to produce synthetic polarization data. We analyze these forward data to determine the distinguishing characteristics of each model. We conclude that it is possible to distinguish …
We develop a model of coronal-loop oscillations that treats the observed bright loops as an integral part of a larger 3-D magnetic structure comprised of the entire magnetic arcade. We demonstrate that magnetic arcades within the solar corona can trap MHD fast waves in a 3-D waveguide. This is accomplished through the construction of a cylindrically symmetric model of a magnetic arcade with a potential magnetic field. For a magnetically dominated plasma, we derive a governing equation for MHD fast waves and from this equation we show that the magnetic arcade forms a 3-D waveguide if the Alfvén…
We present results of 3-D numerical simulations of a fast magnetic twister excited above a foot-point of the potential solar coronal arcade that is embedded in the solar atmosphere with the initial VAL-IIIC temperature profile, which is smoothly extended into the solar corona. With the use of the FLASH code, we solve 3-D ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations by specifying a twist in the azimuthal component of magnetic field in the solar chromosphere. The imposed perturbation generates torsional Alfvén waves as well as plasma swirls that reach the other foot-point of the arcade and partially refl…
The arched field lines forming coronal arcades are often observed to undulate as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves propagate both across and along the magnetic field. These waves are most likely a combination of resonantly coupled fast magnetoacoustic waves and Alfvén waves. The coupling results in resonant absorption of the fast waves, converting fast wave energy into Alfvén waves. The fast eigenmodes of the arcade have proven difficult to compute or derive analytically, largely because of the mathematical complexity that the coupling introduces. When a traditional spectral decomposition is emp…
The Sun often produces coronal mass ejections with similar structure repeatedly from the same source region, and how these homologous eruptions are initiated remains an open question. Here, by using a new magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we show that homologous solar eruptions can be efficiently produced by recurring formation and disruption of coronal current sheet as driven by continuously shearing of the same polarity inversion line within a single bipolar configuration. These eruptions are initiated by the same mechanism, in which an internal current sheet forms slowly in a gradually sheare…
We numerically investigate the excitation and temporal evolution of oscillations in a two-dimensional coronal arcade by including the three-dimensional propagation of perturbations. The time evolution of impulsively generated perturbations is studied by solving the linear, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the zero-beta approximation. As we neglect gas pressure the slow mode is absent and therefore only coupled MHD fast and Alfven modes remain. Two types of numerical experiments are performed. First, the resonant wave energy transfer between a fast normal mode of the system and loca…
Aims. We investigate the synthetic observational signatures from numerical models of coronal heating in an arcade to determine what features are associated with such heating, and what tools can be used to identify them. Methods. We consider two simulations of coronal arcades driven by footpoint motions with different characteristic timescales. Forward modelling is then used, and the synthetic emission data is analysed. Results. The total intensity and Doppler velocities clearly show the magnetic structure of the coronal arcade. Contrasts in the local Doppler shift also highlight the locations …
During eruptive solar flares and coronal mass ejections, a non-pot{\-}ential magnetic arcade with much excess magnetic energy goes unstable and reconnects. It produces a twisted erupting flux rope and leaves behind a sheared arcade of hot coronal loops. We suggest that: the twist of the erupting flux rope can be determined from conservation of magnetic flux and magnetic helicity and equipartition of magnetic helicity. It depends on the geometry of the initial pre-eruptive structure. Two cases are considered, in the first of which a flux rope is not present initially but is created during the e…
Context. The relative importance of AC and DC heating in maintaining the temperature of the corona is not well constrained. Aims. Investigate the effects of the characteristic time scales of photospheric driving on the injection and dissipation of energy within a coronal arcade. Methods. We have conducted three dimensional MHD simulations of foot point driving imposed on an arcade. We modified the typical driving time scales to understand the efficiency of heating obtained using AC and DC drivers. We considered the implications for the injected Poynting flux and the nature of the energy releas…
Solar prominence models used so far in the analysis of MHD waves in such structures are quite elementary. In this work, we calculate numerically magnetohydrostatic models in two-dimensional configurations under the presence of gravity. Our interest is in models that connect the magnetic field to the photosphere and include an overlying arcade. The method used here is based on a relaxation process and requires solving the time-dependent nonlinear ideal MHD equations. Once a prominence model is obtained, we investigate the properties of MHD waves superimposed on the structure. We concentrate on …
We perform a detailed analysis of the thermal structure of the region above the post-eruption arcade for a flare that occurred on 2011 October 22. During this event, a sheet of hot plasma is visible above the flare loops in the 131 Å bandpass of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)}. Supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are observed traveling sunward through the post-eruption plasma sheet. We calculate differential emission measures using the AIA data and derive an emission measure weighted average temperature in the supra-arcade region. In areas where m…
We extend our earlier multidimensional, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of coronal rain occurring in magnetic arcades with higher resolution, grid-adaptive computations covering a much longer ($>6$ hour) timespan. We quantify how in-situ forming blob-like condensations grow along and across field lines and show that rain showers can occur in limit cycles, here demonstrated for the first time in 2.5D setups. We discuss dynamical, multi-dimensional aspects of the rebound shocks generated by the siphon inflows and quantify the thermodynamics of a prominence-corona-transition-region like structure…

Coronal supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are observed as dark trails descending towards hot turbulent fan shaped regions. Due to the large temperature values, and gradients in these fan regions the thermal conduction should be very efficient. While several models have been proposed to explain the triggering and the evolution of SADs, none of these scenarios address a systematic consideration of thermal conduction. Thus, we accomplish this task numerically simulating the evolution of SADs within this framework. That is, SADs are conceived as voided (subdense) cavities formed by non-linear waves tr…
Images of the solar corona by extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) telescopes reveal elegant arches of glowing plasma that trace the corona's magnetic field. Typically, these loops are preferentially illuminated segments of an arcade of vaulted field lines and such loops are often observed to sway in response to nearby solar flares. A flurry of observational and theoretical effort has been devoted to the exploitation of these oscillations with the grand hope that seismic techniques might be used as probes of the strength and structure of the corona's magnetic field. The commonly accepted viewpoint is tha…
We present a new insight into the propagation of ion magnetoacoustic and neutral acoustic waves in a magnetic arcade in the lower solar atmosphere. By means of numerical simulations, we aim to: (a) study two-fluid waves propagating in a magnetic arcade embedded in the partially-ionized, lower solar atmosphere; and (b) investigate the impact of the background magnetic field configuration on the observed wave-periods. We consider a 2D approximation of the gravitationally stratified and partially-ionized lower solar atmosphere consisting of ion+electron and neutral fluids that are coupled by ion-…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities allow energy to be released from stressed magnetic fields, commonly modelled in cylindrical flux tubes linking parallel planes, but, more recently, also in curved arcades containing flux tubes with both footpoints in the same photospheric plane. Uncurved cylindrical flux tubes containing multiple individual threads have been shown to be capable of sustaining an MHD avalanche, whereby a single unstable thread can destabilise many. We examine the properties of multi-threaded coronal loops, wherein each thread is created by photospheric driving in a realist…
We present numerical simulations in 3D settings where coronal rain phenomena take place in a magnetic configuration of a quadrupolar arcade system. Our simulation is a magnetohydrodynamic simulation including anisotropic thermal conduction, optically thin radiative losses, and parametrised heating as main thermodynamical features to construct a realistic arcade configuration from chromospheric to coronal heights. The plasma evaporation from chromospheric and transition region heights eventually causes localised runaway condensation events and we witness the formation of plasma blobs due to the…
Coronal heating is a big question for modern astronomy. Daily measurement of 985 solar spectral irradiances (SSIs) at the spectral intervals 1-39 nm and 116-2416 nm during March 1 2003 to October 28 2017 is utilized to investigate characteristics of solar rotation in the solar atmosphere by means of the Lomb \,-\, Scargle periodogram method to calculate their power spectra. The rotation period of coronal plasma is obtained to be 26.3 days, and that of the solar atmosphere at the bottom of the photosphere modulated by magnetic structures is 27.5 days. Here we report for the first time that unex…
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the most spectacular eruptive phenomena in the solar atmosphere. It is generally accepted that CMEs are results of eruptions of magnetic flux ropes (MFRs). However, a heated debate is on whether MFRs pre-exist before the eruptions or they are formed during the eruptions. Several coronal signatures, \textit{e.g.}, filaments, coronal cavities, sigmoid structures and hot channels (or hot blobs), are proposed as MFRs and observed before the eruption, which support the pre-existing MFR scenario. There is almost no reported observation about MFR formation during the…
We study the formation and evolution of a failed filament eruption observed in NOAA active region 11121 near the southeast limb on November 6, 2010. We use a time series of SDO/AIA 304, 171, 131, 193, 335, 94 Å images, SDO/HMI magnetograms, plus ROSA and ISOON Hαimages, to study the erupting active region. We identify coronal loop arcades associated with a quadrupolar magnetic configuration, and show that the expansion and cancelation of the central loop arcade system over the filament is followed by the eruption of the filament. The erupting filament reveals a clear helical twist and develops…
We perform numerical simulations of impulsively generated Alfvén waves in an isolated solar arcade, which is gravitationally stratified and magnetically confined. We study numerically the propagation of Alfvén waves along such magnetic structure that extends from the lower chromosphere, where the waves are generated, to the solar corona, and analyze influence of the arcade size and width of the initial pulses on the wave propagation and reflection. Our model of the solar atmosphere is constructed by adopting the temperature distribution based on the semi-empirical VAL-C model and specifying th…
In a recent work Grappin et al. [1] have shown that low- frequency movements can be transmitted from one footpoint to the other along a magnetic loop, thus mimicking a friction effect of the corona on the photosphere, and invalidating the line-tying approximation. We consider here successively the effect of high frequencies and turbulent damping on the process. We use a very simple atmospheric model which allows to study analytically the laminar case, and to study the turbulent case both using simple phenomenological arguments and a more sophisticated turbulence model [2]. We find that, except…
We present observations of hot arcades made with the Mg XII spectroheliograph onboard the CORONAS-F mission, which provides monochromatic images of hot plasma in the Mg XII 8.42 A resonance line. The arcades were observed to form above the polarity inversion line between Active Regions NOAA 09847 and 09848 at four successive episodes: at 09:18, 14:13, and 22:28 UT on 28 February 2002, and at 00:40 UT on 1 March 2002. The arcades all evolved in the same way: a) a small flare (precursor) appeared near the edge of the still invisible arcade, b) the arcade brightened in a wave-like manner - closer…
Sunward-flowing voids above post-coronal mass ejection flare arcades, also known as supra-arcade downflows (SADs), have characteristics consistent with post-reconnection magnetic flux tube cross-sections. Applying semi-automatic detection and analysis software to a large sample of flares using several instruments (e.g., Hinode/XRT, Yohkoh/SXT, TRACE, and SOHO/LASCO), we have estimated parameters such as speeds, sizes, heights, magnetic flux, and relaxation energy associated with SADs, which we interpret as reconnection outflows. We also present speed and height measurements of shrinking loops …
Coronal implosions - the convergence motion of plasmas and entrained magnetic field in the corona due to a reduction in magnetic pressure - can help to locate and track sites of magnetic energy release or redistribution during solar flares and eruptions. We report here on the analysis of a well-observed implosion in the form of an arcade contraction associated with a filament eruption, during the C3.5 flare SOL2013-06-19T07:29. A sequence of events including magnetic flux-rope instability and distortion, followed by filament eruption and arcade implosion, lead us to conclude that the implosion…

In the solar atmosphere, Alfvén waves are believed to play an important role in the transfer of energy from the photosphere to the corona and solar wind, and in the heating of the chromosphere. We perform numerical computations to investigate energy transport and dissipation associated with torsional Alfvén waves propagating in magnetic flux tubes that expand from the photosphere to the corona in quiet-Sun conditions. We place a broadband driver at the photosphere that injects a wave energy flux of $10^7$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and consider Ohm's magnetic diffusion and ion-neutral collisions a…
We apply the magneto-frictional approach to investigate which quantity or quantities can best predict the loss of equilibrium of a translationally-invariant magnetic flux rope. The flux rope is produced self-consistently by flux cancellation combined with gradual footpoint shearing of a coronal arcade which is open at the outer boundary. This models the magnetic field in decaying active regions on the Sun. Such a model permits two types of eruption: episodic small events caused by shearing and relaxation of the overlying arcade, and major eruptions of the main low-lying coronal flux rope. Thro…
The magnetohydrodynamics of active region NOAA 11283 is simulated using an initial non-force-free magnetic field extrapolated from its photospheric vector magnetogram. We focus on the magnetic reconnections at a magnetic null point that participated in the X2.1 flare on 2011 September 6 around 22:21 UT (SOL2011-09-06T22:21X2.1) followed by the appearance of circular flare ribbons and coronal dimmings. The initial magnetic field from extrapolation displays a three-dimensional (3D) null topology overlying a sheared arcade. Prior to the flare, magnetic loops rise due to the initial Lorentz force,…
We address the formation of 3D nullpoint topologies in the solar corona by combining Hinode/XRT observations of a small dynamic limb event, which occurred beside a non-erupting prominence cavity, with a 3D zero-beta MHD simulation. To this end, we model the boundary-driven kinematic emergence of a compact, intense, and uniformly twisted flux tube into a potential field arcade that overlies a weakly twisted coronal flux rope. The expansion of the emerging flux in the corona gives rise to the formation of a nullpoint at the interface of the emerging and the pre-existing fields. We unveil a two-s…
A variety of indices have been proposed in order to represent the many different observables modulated by the solar cycle. Most of these indices are highly correlated with each other owing to their intrinsic link with the solar magnetism and the dominant eleven year cycle, but their variations may differ in fine details, as well as on short- and long-term trends. In this paper we present an overview of the indices that are often employed to describe the many features of the solar cycle, moving from the ones referring to direct observations of the inner solar atmosphere, the photosphere and chr…
One of the most important features in the solar atmosphere is magnetic network and its rela- tionship with the transition region (TR), and coronal brightness. It is important to understand how energy is transported into the corona and how it travels along the magnetic-field lines be- tween deep photosphere and chromosphere through the TR and corona. An excellent proxy for transportation is the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) raster scans and imaging observations in near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission channels with high time-spatial resolutions. In this study,…
We solve numerically the ideal MHD equations with an external gravitational field in 2D in order to study the effects of impulsively generated linear and non-linear Alfvén waves into isolated solar arcades and coronal funnels. We analyze the region containing the interface between the photosphere and the corona. The main interest is to study the possibility that Alfvén waves triggers the energy flux transfer toward the quiet solar corona and heat it, including the case that two consecutive waves can occur. We find that in the case of arcades, short or large, the transferred fluxes by Alfvén wa…
Recent observations of sunspot light-bridges have shed new light on the fact that they are often associated with significant chromospheric activity. In particular chromospheric jets (Shimizu et al. 2009) persisting over a period of days have been identifies, sometimes associated with large downflows at the photospheric level (Louis et al. 2009). One possible explanation for this activity is reconnection low in the atmosphere. Light-bridges have also been associated with a constant brightness enhancement in the 1600 angstroms passband of TRACE, and the heating of 1 MK loops. Using data from EIS…
We present multi-wavelength observations of a prominence eruption originating from a quadrupolar field configuration, in which the prominence was embedded in a side-arcade. Within the two-day period prior to its eruption on 2012 October 22, the prominence was perturbed three times by chromospheric fibrils underneath, which rose upward, became brightened, and merged into the prominence, resulting in horizontal flows along the prominence axis, suggesting that the fluxes carried by the fibrils were incorporated into the magnetic field of the prominence. These perturbations caused the prominence t…
Measurements of temperature and density near supra-arcade current sheets suggest that plasma on unreconnected field lines may experience some degree of "pre-heating" and "pre-densification" prior to their reconnection. Models of patchy reconnection allow for heating and acceleration of plasma along reconnected field lines but do not offer a mechanism for transport of thermal energy across field lines. Here we present a model in which a reconnected flux tube retracts, deforming the surrounding layer of unreconnected field. The deformation creates constrictions that act as peristaltic pumps, dri…
A flare and fast coronal mass ejection originated between solar active regions NOAA 11514 and 11515 on July 1, 2012 in response to flux emergence in front of the leading sunspot of the trailing region 11515. Analyzing the evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux and the coronal structure, we find that the flux emergence triggered the eruption by interaction with overlying flux in a non-standard way. The new flux neither had the opposite orientation nor a location near the polarity inversion line, which are favorable for strong reconnection with the arcade flux under which it emerged. Moreov…
We study the formation and evolution of jets in the solar atmosphere using numerical simulations of partially ionized plasma. The two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic equations with ion+electron and neutral hydrogen components are used in two-dimensional (2D) Cartesian geometry. Numerical simulations show that a localized nonlinear Gaussian pulse of ion and neutral pressures initially launched from the magnetic null point of a potential arcade located below the transition region quickly develops into a shock due to the decrease of density with height. The shock propagates upwards into the solar coron…
Using spectropolarimetric data of an Active Region (AR) filament we have carried out inversions in order to infer vector magnetic fields in the photosphere (Si I line) and in the chromosphere (He I line). Our filament lies above the polarity inversion line (PIL) situated close to disk center and presents strong Zeeman-like signatures in both photospheric and chromospheric lines. Pore-like formations with both polarities are identified in the continuum under the PIL. The azimuth ambiguity is solved at both heights using the AZAM code. A comparison between the photospheric and chromospheric vect…
We investigate the morphology and temporal variability of a quiet Sun network region in different solar layers. The emission in several EUV spectral lines through both raster and slot time series, recorded by EIS/Hinode is studied along with H$α$ observations and high resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the photospheric magnetic field. The photospheric magnetic field is extrapolated up to the corona showing a multitude of large and small scale structures. We show for the first time that the smallest magnetic structures both at the network and the internetwork contribute significantl…
The solar coronal heating is a longstanding mystery in astrophysics. Considering that the solar magnetic field is spatially inhomogeneous with considerable magnetic gradient from solar surface to the corona, this work proposes a magnetic gradient pumping (MGP) mechanism and try to explain the formation of hot plasma upflows, such as the hot type II spicules and hot plasma ejections, etc. In MGP mechanism, the magnetic gradients drive the energetic particles to move upwards from the underlying solar atmosphere and form hot upflows. These upflow energetic particles deposit in corona and make it …
For the first time, we report a large-scale wave that was observed simultaneously in the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region and low corona layers of the solar atmosphere. Using the high temporal and high spatial resolution observations taken by the Solar Magnetic Activity Research Telescope at Hida Observatory and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamic Observatory, we find that the wave evolved synchronously at different heights of the solar atmosphere, and it propagated at a speed of 605 km/s and showed a significant deceleration (-424 m/s2) in the extreme-ultr…
Coronal loops act as resonant cavities for low frequency fluctuations that are transmitted from the deeper layers of the solar atmosphere and are amplified in the corona, triggering nonlinear interactions. However trapping is not perfect, some energy leaks down to the chromosphere, thus limiting the turbulence development and the associated heating. We consider the combined effects of turbulence and leakage in determining the energy level and associated heating rate in models of coronal loops which include the chromosphere and transition region. We use a piece-wise constant model for the Alfve…
Utilizing multiwavelength observations and magnetic field data from SDO/AIA, SDO/HMI, GOES and RHESSI, we investigate a large-scale ejective solar eruption of 2014 December 18 from active region NOAA 12241. This event produced a distinctive three-ribbon flare, having two parallel ribbons corresponding to the ribbons of a standard two-ribbon flare, and a larger-scale third quasi-circular ribbon offset from the other two ribbons. There are two components to this eruptive event. First, a flux rope forms above a strong-field polarity-inversion line and erupts and grows as the parallel ribbons turn…
We review relationships between coronal mass ejections (CMEs), EIT post eruption arcades, and the coronal neutral line associated with global magnetic field and magnetic clouds near the Earth. Our previous findings indicate that the orientation of a halo CME elongation may correspond to the orientation of the underlyig flux rope. Here we revisit these preliminary reports by comparing orientation angles of elongated LASCO CMEs, both full and partial halos, to the post eruption arcades. Based on 100 analysed events, it was found that the overwhelming majority of halo CMEs are elongated in the di…
As one of the most spectacular energy release events in the solar system, solar flares are generally powered by magnetic reconnection in the solar corona. As a result of the re-arrangement of magnetic field topology after the reconnection process, a series of new loop-like magnetic structures are often formed and are known as flare loops. A hot diffuse region, consisting of around 5-10 MK plasma, is also observed above the loops and is called a supra-arcade fan. Often, dark, tadpole-like structures are seen to descend through the bright supra-arcade fans. It remains unclear what role these so-…
By using a new method of forced-field extrapolation, we study the emerging flux region AR 11850 observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and Solar Dynamical Observatory (SDO). Our results suggest that the bright points (BPs) in this emerging region have responses in lines formed from the upper photosphere to the transition region, with a relatively similar morphology. They have an oscillation of several minutes according to the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) data at 1600 and 1700 A . The ratio between the BP intensities measured in 1600 A and 1700 A filtergrams reveals …

Recent studies undoubtedly demonstrate that the magnetic field in the photosphere and corona is an intermittent structure, which offers new views on the underlying physics. In particular, such problems as the existence in the corona of localized areas with extremely strong resistivity (required to explain magnetic reconnection of all scales) and the interchange between small and large scales (required in study of the photosphere/corona coupling), to name a few, can be easily captured by the concept of intermittency. This study is focused on simultaneous time variations of intermittency propert…
