We numerically investigate the excitation and temporal evolution of oscillations in a two-dimensional coronal arcade by including the three-dimensional propagation of perturbations. The time evolution of impulsively generated perturbations is studied by solving the linear, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in the zero-beta approximation. As we neglect gas pressure the slow mode is absent and therefore only coupled MHD fast and Alfven modes remain. Two types of numerical experiments are performed. First, the resonant wave energy transfer between a fast normal mode of the system and local Alfven waves is analyzed. It is seen how, because of resonant coupling, the fast wave with global character transfers its energy to Alfvenic oscillations localized around a particular magnetic surface within the arcade, thus producing the damping of the initial fast MHD mode. Second, the time evolution of a localized impulsive excitation, trying to mimic a nearby coronal disturbance, is considered. In this case, the generated fast wavefront leaves its energy on several magnetic surfaces within the arcade. The system is therefore able to trap energy in the form of Alfvenic oscillations, even in the absence of a density enhancement such as that of a coronal loop. These local oscillations are subsequently phase-mixed to smaller spatial scales. The amount of wave energy trapped by the system via wave energy conversion strongly depends on the wavelength of perturbations in the perpendicular direction, but is almost independent from the ratio of the magnetic to density scale heights.
We analyse intensity variations, as measured by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) in the 171 Å passband, in two coronal loops embedded within a single coronal magnetic arcade. We detect oscillations in the fundamental mode with periods of roughly 2 minutes and decay times of 5 minutes. The oscillations were initiated by interaction of the arcade with a large wavefront issuing from a flare site. Further, the power spectra of the oscillations evince signatures consistent with oblique propagation to the field lines and for the existence of a 2-D waveguide instead of a 1-D one.
We investigate the triggering mechanisms of plasma eruptions in the solar atmosphere due to interactions between emerging flux and coronal arcade fields by using two-dimensional MHD simulations. We perform parameter surveys with respect to arcade field height, magnetic field strength, and emerging flux location. Our results show that two possible mechanisms exist, and which mechanism is dominant depends mostly on emerging flux location. One mechanism appears when the location of emerging flux is close to the polarity inversion line (PIL) of an arcade field. This mechanism requires reconnection…
This paper presents multiwavelength observations of a flare-generated type II radio burst. The kinematics of the shock derived from the type II closely match a fast EUV wave seen propagating through coronal arcade loops. The EUV wave was closely associated with an impulsive M1.0 flare without a related coronal mass ejection, and was triggered at one of the footpoints of the arcade loops in active region NOAA 12035. It was initially observed in the AIA 335 Å images with a speed of ~800 km/s and accelerated to ~1490 km/s after passing through the arcade loops. A fan-spine magnetic topology was r…
We investigate the temporal evolution of impulsively generated perturbations in a potential coronal arcade with an embedded loop. As the initial configuration we consider a coronal loop, represented by a density enhancement, which is unbounded in the ignorable direction of the arcade. The linearized time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic equations have been numerically solved in field-aligned coordinates and the time evolution of the initial perturbations has been studied in the zero-beta approximation. For propagation constrained to the plane of the arcade, the considered initial perturbations do…
The pre-CME structure is of great importance to understanding the origin of CMEs, which, however, has been largely unknown for CMEs originating from active regions. In this paper, selected for studying are 16 active-region coronal arcades whose gradual inflation lead up to CMEs. 12 of them clearly build upon post-eruptive arcades resulting from a preceding eruption. The observed inflation sustains for 8.7 +/- 4.1 h, with the arcade rising from 1.15 +/- 0.06 Rsun to 1.36 +/- 0.07 Rsun within the EIT field of view (FOV). The rising speed is less than 5 km s-1 for most of the time. Only at the en…
The coronal magnetic field is the primary driver of solar dynamic events. Linear and circular polarization signals of certain infrared coronal emission lines contain information about the magnetic field, and to access this information, either a forward or an inversion method must be used. We study three coronal magnetic configurations that are applicable to polar-crown filament cavities by doing forward calculations to produce synthetic polarization data. We analyze these forward data to determine the distinguishing characteristics of each model. We conclude that it is possible to distinguish …
The normal modes of oscillation for a magnetic arcade are used to analytically solve an initial value problem and estimate the power spectra of wave frequencies generated by a reconnection event in the solar corona. Over a realistic range of parameters, I find that such a disturbance generates a peak power at $\sim10$s$\mathrm{mHz}$ frequencies, but still substantial power up to $\sim4\mathrm{Hz}$. The cadence and sensitivity of current instrumentation does not allow observations of oscillations at these frequencies, but in the near future, new instrumentation will be able to probe this regime…
We report on the first direct observation of a fast-mode wave propagating along and perpendicular to cool (171 Å) arcade loops observed by the SDO/AIA. The wave was associated with an impulsive/compact flare, near the edge of a sunspot. The EUV wavefront expanded radially outward from the flare center and decelerated in the corona from 1060-760 km/s within ~3-4 minute. Part of the EUV wave propagated along a large-scale arcade of cool loops and was partially reflected back to the flare site. The phase speed of the wave was about 1450 km/s, which is interpreted as a fast-mode wave. A second ove…
We study intensity variations, as measured by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), in a solar coronal arcade using a newly developed analysis procedure that employs spatio-temporal auto-correlations. We test our new procedure by studying large-amplitude oscillations excited by nearby flaring activity within a complex arcade and detect a dominant periodicity of 12.5 minutes. We compute this period in two ways: from the traditional time-distance fitting method and using our new auto-correlation procedure. The two analyses yield consistent results.…
The arched field lines forming coronal arcades are often observed to undulate as magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves propagate both across and along the magnetic field. These waves are most likely a combination of resonantly coupled fast magnetoacoustic waves and Alfvén waves. The coupling results in resonant absorption of the fast waves, converting fast wave energy into Alfvén waves. The fast eigenmodes of the arcade have proven difficult to compute or derive analytically, largely because of the mathematical complexity that the coupling introduces. When a traditional spectral decomposition is emp…
The Sun often produces coronal mass ejections with similar structure repeatedly from the same source region, and how these homologous eruptions are initiated remains an open question. Here, by using a new magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we show that homologous solar eruptions can be efficiently produced by recurring formation and disruption of coronal current sheet as driven by continuously shearing of the same polarity inversion line within a single bipolar configuration. These eruptions are initiated by the same mechanism, in which an internal current sheet forms slowly in a gradually sheare…
We present results of 3-D numerical simulations of a fast magnetic twister excited above a foot-point of the potential solar coronal arcade that is embedded in the solar atmosphere with the initial VAL-IIIC temperature profile, which is smoothly extended into the solar corona. With the use of the FLASH code, we solve 3-D ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations by specifying a twist in the azimuthal component of magnetic field in the solar chromosphere. The imposed perturbation generates torsional Alfvén waves as well as plasma swirls that reach the other foot-point of the arcade and partially refl…
Aims. We investigate the synthetic observational signatures from numerical models of coronal heating in an arcade to determine what features are associated with such heating, and what tools can be used to identify them. Methods. We consider two simulations of coronal arcades driven by footpoint motions with different characteristic timescales. Forward modelling is then used, and the synthetic emission data is analysed. Results. The total intensity and Doppler velocities clearly show the magnetic structure of the coronal arcade. Contrasts in the local Doppler shift also highlight the locations …
During eruptive solar flares and coronal mass ejections, a non-pot{\-}ential magnetic arcade with much excess magnetic energy goes unstable and reconnects. It produces a twisted erupting flux rope and leaves behind a sheared arcade of hot coronal loops. We suggest that: the twist of the erupting flux rope can be determined from conservation of magnetic flux and magnetic helicity and equipartition of magnetic helicity. It depends on the geometry of the initial pre-eruptive structure. Two cases are considered, in the first of which a flux rope is not present initially but is created during the e…
Solar prominence models used so far in the analysis of MHD waves in such structures are quite elementary. In this work, we calculate numerically magnetohydrostatic models in two-dimensional configurations under the presence of gravity. Our interest is in models that connect the magnetic field to the photosphere and include an overlying arcade. The method used here is based on a relaxation process and requires solving the time-dependent nonlinear ideal MHD equations. Once a prominence model is obtained, we investigate the properties of MHD waves superimposed on the structure. We concentrate on …
We perform a detailed analysis of the thermal structure of the region above the post-eruption arcade for a flare that occurred on 2011 October 22. During this event, a sheet of hot plasma is visible above the flare loops in the 131 Å bandpass of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the {\it Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)}. Supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are observed traveling sunward through the post-eruption plasma sheet. We calculate differential emission measures using the AIA data and derive an emission measure weighted average temperature in the supra-arcade region. In areas where m…
We present the first multidimensional, magnetohydrodynamic simulations which capture the initial formation and the long-term sustainment of the enigmatic coronal rain phenomenon. We demonstrate how thermal instability can induce a spectacular display of in-situ forming blob-like condensations which then start their intimate ballet on top of initially linear force-free arcades. Our magnetic arcades host chromospheric, transition region, and coronal plasma. Following coronal rain dynamics for over 80 minutes physical time, we collect enough statistics to quantify blob widths, lengths, velocity d…
We extend our earlier multidimensional, magnetohydrodynamic simulations of coronal rain occurring in magnetic arcades with higher resolution, grid-adaptive computations covering a much longer ($>6$ hour) timespan. We quantify how in-situ forming blob-like condensations grow along and across field lines and show that rain showers can occur in limit cycles, here demonstrated for the first time in 2.5D setups. We discuss dynamical, multi-dimensional aspects of the rebound shocks generated by the siphon inflows and quantify the thermodynamics of a prominence-corona-transition-region like structure…
Adopting the MPI-AMRVAC code, we present a 2.5-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation, which includes thermal conduction and radiative cooling, to investigate the formation and evolution of the coronal rain phenomenon. We perform the simulation in initially linear force-free magnetic fields which host chromospheric, transition region, and coronal plasma, with turbulent heating localized on their footpoints. Due to thermal instability, condensations start to occur at the loop top, and rebound shocks are generated by the siphon inflows. Condensations fragment into smaller blobs moving …
We report decaying quasi-periodic intensity oscillations in the X-ray (6-12 keV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) channels (131, 94, 1600, 304 Å) observed by the Fermi GBM (Gamma-ray Burst Monitor) and SDO/AIA, respectively, during a C-class flare. The estimated period of oscillation and decay time in the X-ray channel (6-12 keV) was about 202 s and 154 s, respectively. A similar oscillation period was detected at the footpoint of the arcade loops in the AIA 1600 and 304 Åchannels. Simultaneously, AIA hot channels (94 and 131 Å) reveal propagating EUV disturbances bouncing back and forth between …
Coronal supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are observed as dark trails descending towards hot turbulent fan shaped regions. Due to the large temperature values, and gradients in these fan regions the thermal conduction should be very efficient. While several models have been proposed to explain the triggering and the evolution of SADs, none of these scenarios address a systematic consideration of thermal conduction. Thus, we accomplish this task numerically simulating the evolution of SADs within this framework. That is, SADs are conceived as voided (subdense) cavities formed by non-linear waves tr…
Context. The relative importance of AC and DC heating in maintaining the temperature of the corona is not well constrained. Aims. Investigate the effects of the characteristic time scales of photospheric driving on the injection and dissipation of energy within a coronal arcade. Methods. We have conducted three dimensional MHD simulations of foot point driving imposed on an arcade. We modified the typical driving time scales to understand the efficiency of heating obtained using AC and DC drivers. We considered the implications for the injected Poynting flux and the nature of the energy releas…

University of Oslo(奥斯陆大学);Sorbonne Université, Observatoire de Paris-PSL, École Polytechnique, IP Paris, CNRS, Laboratoire de Physique des Plasmas(索邦大学,巴黎天文台-PSL,巴黎综合理工学院,IP巴黎,法国国家科学研究中心,等离子体物理实验室)
We present numerical simulations in 3D settings where coronal rain phenomena take place in a magnetic configuration of a quadrupolar arcade system. Our simulation is a magnetohydrodynamic simulation including anisotropic thermal conduction, optically thin radiative losses, and parametrised heating as main thermodynamical features to construct a realistic arcade configuration from chromospheric to coronal heights. The plasma evaporation from chromospheric and transition region heights eventually causes localised runaway condensation events and we witness the formation of plasma blobs due to the…
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities allow energy to be released from stressed magnetic fields, commonly modelled in cylindrical flux tubes linking parallel planes, but, more recently, also in curved arcades containing flux tubes with both footpoints in the same photospheric plane. Uncurved cylindrical flux tubes containing multiple individual threads have been shown to be capable of sustaining an MHD avalanche, whereby a single unstable thread can destabilise many. We examine the properties of multi-threaded coronal loops, wherein each thread is created by photospheric driving in a realist…
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the most spectacular eruptive phenomena in the solar atmosphere. It is generally accepted that CMEs are results of eruptions of magnetic flux ropes (MFRs). However, a heated debate is on whether MFRs pre-exist before the eruptions or they are formed during the eruptions. Several coronal signatures, \textit{e.g.}, filaments, coronal cavities, sigmoid structures and hot channels (or hot blobs), are proposed as MFRs and observed before the eruption, which support the pre-existing MFR scenario. There is almost no reported observation about MFR formation during the…
Post-flare arcades are well-known components of solar flare evolution, which have been observed for several decades. Coronal rain, cascades of catastrophically-cooled plasma, outline the loops and provide eye-catching evidence of the recent flare. These events are acknowledged to be common, but the scientific literature does not include any statistical overview documenting just how common the phenomenon actually is. This study reviews Solar Dynamics Observatory Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO AIA) observations of 241 flares collected from the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) database b…
Supra-arcade downflows (SADs) are infrequent, wiggly opaque structures observed to descend through the solar corona, mostly in EUV and soft X-ray frequencies. From their physical characteristics, SADs have been interpreted as voided (subdense) bubbles and are related to magnetic reconnection processes during long-term erupting flares. In this work we use numerical MHD simulations to compute flux density maps, which are convolved with telescope beams to synthesise images with the aim to assess the expected SADs emission at radio wavelengths and propose observing strategies, including the instru…
We study the formation and evolution of a failed filament eruption observed in NOAA active region 11121 near the southeast limb on November 6, 2010. We use a time series of SDO/AIA 304, 171, 131, 193, 335, 94 Å images, SDO/HMI magnetograms, plus ROSA and ISOON Hαimages, to study the erupting active region. We identify coronal loop arcades associated with a quadrupolar magnetic configuration, and show that the expansion and cancelation of the central loop arcade system over the filament is followed by the eruption of the filament. The erupting filament reveals a clear helical twist and develops…
Images of the solar corona by extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) telescopes reveal elegant arches of glowing plasma that trace the corona's magnetic field. Typically, these loops are preferentially illuminated segments of an arcade of vaulted field lines and such loops are often observed to sway in response to nearby solar flares. A flurry of observational and theoretical effort has been devoted to the exploitation of these oscillations with the grand hope that seismic techniques might be used as probes of the strength and structure of the corona's magnetic field. The commonly accepted viewpoint is tha…
The magnetohydrodynamics of active region NOAA 11283 is simulated using an initial non-force-free magnetic field extrapolated from its photospheric vector magnetogram. We focus on the magnetic reconnections at a magnetic null point that participated in the X2.1 flare on 2011 September 6 around 22:21 UT (SOL2011-09-06T22:21X2.1) followed by the appearance of circular flare ribbons and coronal dimmings. The initial magnetic field from extrapolation displays a three-dimensional (3D) null topology overlying a sheared arcade. Prior to the flare, magnetic loops rise due to the initial Lorentz force,…

We study processes occurring after a sudden heating of the chromosphere at the flare arcade footpoints which is assumed to be caused by particle beams. For the numerical simulations we adopt a 2-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, in which we solve a full set of the time-dependent MHD equations by means of the FLASH code, using the Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) method. In the initial state we consider a model of the solar atmosphere with densities according to the VAL-C model and the magnetic field arcade having the X-point structure above, where the magnetic reconnection is assumed. We found …
We report on observations of the two newly-identified reconnection geometries involving erupting flux ropes. In 3D, a flux rope can reconnect either with a surrounding coronal arcade (recently named "ar-rf" reconnection) or with itself ("rr-rf" reconnection), and both kinds of reconnection create a new flux rope field line and a flare loop. For the first time, we identify all four constituents of both reconnections in a solar eruptive event, the filament eruption of 2011 June 07 observed by SDO/AIA. The ar-rf reconnection manifests itself as shift of one leg of the filament by more than 25" no…
A flare and fast coronal mass ejection originated between solar active regions NOAA 11514 and 11515 on July 1, 2012 in response to flux emergence in front of the leading sunspot of the trailing region 11515. Analyzing the evolution of the photospheric magnetic flux and the coronal structure, we find that the flux emergence triggered the eruption by interaction with overlying flux in a non-standard way. The new flux neither had the opposite orientation nor a location near the polarity inversion line, which are favorable for strong reconnection with the arcade flux under which it emerged. Moreov…
Sunward-flowing voids above post-coronal mass ejection (CME) flare arcades were first discovered using the soft X-ray telescope (SXT) aboard Yohkoh and have since been observed with TRACE (extreme ultra-violet (EUV)), SOHO/LASCO (white light), SOHO/SUMER (EUV spectra), and Hinode/XRT (soft X-rays (SXR)). Supra-arcade downflow (SAD) observations suggest that they are the cross-sections of thin flux tubes retracting from a reconnection site high in the corona. Supra-arcade downflowing loops (SADLs) have also been observed under similar circumstances and are theorized to be SADs viewed from a per…
Utilizing multiwavelength observations and magnetic field data from SDO/AIA, SDO/HMI, GOES and RHESSI, we investigate a large-scale ejective solar eruption of 2014 December 18 from active region NOAA 12241. This event produced a distinctive three-ribbon flare, having two parallel ribbons corresponding to the ribbons of a standard two-ribbon flare, and a larger-scale third quasi-circular ribbon offset from the other two ribbons. There are two components to this eruptive event. First, a flux rope forms above a strong-field polarity-inversion line and erupts and grows as the parallel ribbons turn…
We review relationships between coronal mass ejections (CMEs), EIT post eruption arcades, and the coronal neutral line associated with global magnetic field and magnetic clouds near the Earth. Our previous findings indicate that the orientation of a halo CME elongation may correspond to the orientation of the underlyig flux rope. Here we revisit these preliminary reports by comparing orientation angles of elongated LASCO CMEs, both full and partial halos, to the post eruption arcades. Based on 100 analysed events, it was found that the overwhelming majority of halo CMEs are elongated in the di…
Coronal loops, constituting the basic building blocks of the active Sun, serve as primary targets to help understand the mechanisms responsible for maintaining multi-million Kelvin temperatures in the solar and stellar coronae. Despite significant advances in observations and theory, our knowledge on the fundamental properties of these structures is limited. Here, we present unprecedented observations of accelerating slow magnetoacoustic waves along a coronal loop that show differential propagation speeds in two distinct temperature channels, revealing the multi-stranded and multi-thermal natu…

There are observational evidences for the existence of twisted magnetic field in the solar corona. This inspires us to investigate the effect of a twisted magnetic field on the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves in coronal loops. To this aim, we solve the incompressible linearized MHD equations in a magnetically twisted nonuniform coronal flux tube in the limit of long wavelengths. Our results show that a twisted magnetic field can enhance or diminish the rate of phase-mixing of the Alfvén continuum modes and the decay rate of the global kink oscillation depending on the twist m…
We perform numerical simulations of impulsively generated Alfvén waves in an isolated solar arcade, which is gravitationally stratified and magnetically confined. We study numerically the propagation of Alfvén waves along such magnetic structure that extends from the lower chromosphere, where the waves are generated, to the solar corona, and analyze influence of the arcade size and width of the initial pulses on the wave propagation and reflection. Our model of the solar atmosphere is constructed by adopting the temperature distribution based on the semi-empirical VAL-C model and specifying th…
We develop a model of coronal-loop oscillations that treats the observed bright loops as an integral part of a larger 3-D magnetic structure comprised of the entire magnetic arcade. We demonstrate that magnetic arcades within the solar corona can trap MHD fast waves in a 3-D waveguide. This is accomplished through the construction of a cylindrically symmetric model of a magnetic arcade with a potential magnetic field. For a magnetically dominated plasma, we derive a governing equation for MHD fast waves and from this equation we show that the magnetic arcade forms a 3-D waveguide if the Alfvén…
Extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray jets occur frequently in magnetically open coronal holes on the Sun, especially at high solar latitudes. Some of these jets are observed by white-light coronagraphs as they propagate through the outer corona toward the inner heliosphere, and it has been proposed that they give rise to microstreams and torsional Alfvén waves detected in situ in the solar wind. To predict and understand the signatures of coronal-hole jets, we have performed a detailed statistical analysis of such a jet simulated with an adaptively refined magnetohydrodynamics model. The results conf…
We analyse the evolution of a sigmoidal (S shaped) active region toward eruption, which includes a coronal mass ejection (CME) but leaves part of the filament in place. The X-ray sigmoid is found to trace out three different magnetic topologies in succession: a highly sheared arcade of coronal loops in its long-lived phase, a bald-patch separatrix surface (BPSS) in the hours before the CME, and the first flare loops in its major transient intensity enhancement. The coronal evolution is driven by photospheric changes which involve the convergence and cancellation of flux elements under the sigm…
We present an alternative model of coronal-loop oscillations which considers that the waves are trapped in a 2D waveguide formed by the entire arcade of field lines. This differs from the standard 1D model which treats the waves as the resonant oscillations of just the visible bundle of field lines. Within the framework of our 2D model, the two types of oscillations that have been observationally identified, flare-induced waves and "decayless" oscillations, can both be attributed to MHD fast waves. The two components of the signal differ only because of the duration and spatial extent of the s…
The solar active region NOAA 12887 produced a strong X1.0 flare on 2021 October 28, which exhibits X-shaped flare ribbons and a circle-shaped erupting filament. To understand the eruption process with these characteristics, we conducted a data-constrained magnetohydrodynamics simulation using a nonlinear force-free field of the active region about an hour before the flare as the initial condition. Our simulation reproduces the filament eruption observed in the Ha images of GONG and the 304 angstrom images of SDO/AIA and suggests that two mechanisms can possibly contribute to the magnetic erupt…
Magnetic arcades in the solar atmosphere, or coronal loops, are common structures known to host magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and oscillations. Of particular interest are the observed properties of transverse loop oscillations, such as their frequency and mode of oscillation, which have received significant attention in recent years because of their seismological capability. Previous studies have relied on standard data analysis techniques, such as a fast Fourier transform (FFT) and wavelet transform (WT), to correctly extract periodicities and identify the MHD modes. However, how these meth…
We follow up on the Sterling et al (2015) discovery that nearly all polar coronal X-ray jets are made by an explosive eruption of closed magnetic field carrying a miniature filament in its core. In the same X-ray and EUV movies used by Sterling et al (2015), we examine the onset and growth of the driving magnetic explosion in 15 of the 20 jets that they studied. We find evidence that: (1) in a large majority of polar X-ray jets, the runaway internal/tether-cutting reconnection under the erupting minifilament flux rope starts after both the minifilaments rise and the spire-producing external/br…
We present a first-principles-based coronal mass ejection (CME) model suitable for both scientific and operational purposes by combining a global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) solar wind model with a flux rope-driven CME model. Realistic CME events are simulated self-consistently with high fidelity and forecasting capability by constraining initial flux rope parameters with observational data from GONG, SOHO/LASCO, and STEREO/COR. We automate this process so that minimum manual intervention is required in specifying the CME initial state. With the newly developed data-driven Eruptive Event Genera…
We perform a Bayesian parameter inference in the context of resonantly damped transverse coronal loop oscillations. The forward problem is solved in terms of parametric results for kink waves in one-dimensional flux tubes in the thin tube and thin boundary approximations. For the inverse problem, we adopt a Bayesian approach to infer the most probable values of the relevant parameters, for given observed periods and damping times, and to extract their confidence levels. The posterior probability distribution functions are obtained by means of Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, incorporating…
Coronal implosions - the convergence motion of plasmas and entrained magnetic field in the corona due to a reduction in magnetic pressure - can help to locate and track sites of magnetic energy release or redistribution during solar flares and eruptions. We report here on the analysis of a well-observed implosion in the form of an arcade contraction associated with a filament eruption, during the C3.5 flare SOL2013-06-19T07:29. A sequence of events including magnetic flux-rope instability and distortion, followed by filament eruption and arcade implosion, lead us to conclude that the implosion…
Magnetic reconnections (MRs) for various magnetic field line (MFL) topologies are believed to be the initiators of various solar eruptive events like flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Consequently, important is a thorough understanding and quantification of the MFL topology and their evolution which leads to MRs. Contemporary standard is to extrapolate the coronal MFLs using equilibrium models where the Lorentz force on the coronal plasma is zero everywhere, because either there is no current or the current is parallel to the magnetic field. In tandem, a non-force-free-field (NFFF) ext…
