We calculate the anomalous Hall conductance of superconductors with spin-orbit interaction and with either uniform or local magnetization. In the first case we consider a uniform ferromagnetic ordering in a spin triplet superconductor, while in the second case we consider a conventional s-wave spin singlet superconductor with a magnetic impurity (or a diluted set of magnetic impurities). In the latter case we show that the anomalous Hall conductance can be used to track the quantum phase transition, that occurs when the spin coupling between the impurity and electronic spin density exceeds a certain critical value. In both cases we find that for large spin-orbit coupling the superconductivity is destroyed and the Hall conductance oscillates strongly.
I derive equations of motion for quasiparticles near the nodes in the d-wave gap of high Tc superconductors. Previous versions have not properly taken into account the spatial dependence of the gap parameter phase. The results are compatible with magnetothermal conductivity measurements in the superconducting phase by Ong and Krishana.
This is a short note presenting a repeated experiment of the half-quantized transport signature given by Majorana chiral modes living in a heterostructure formed by an s-wave superconductor and a quantum-anomalous-Hall insulator.
Hall effect below Tc in multiphase superconductors has been studied on Bi-based superconductors. Samples with different relative content of 2212 and 2223 phase have been prepared. The phase content has been verified by X-ray diffraction. Results show that while resistance and ac susceptibility is almost insensitive to the content of 2212 phase, the qualitative behavior of the Hall resistance is strongly influenced by the presence of both phases. Theoretical calculation of Hall resistance has been made based on effective medium approximation and compared with experimental results.
Spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in superconductors with the $p_x+ip_y$ symmetry of the order parameter allows for a class of effects which are analogous to the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnets. These effects exist below the critical temperature, $T<T_{c}$. We develop a kinetic theory of such effects. In particular, we consider anomalous Hall thermal conductivity, the polar Kerr effect, the anomalous Hall effect, and the anomalous photo- and acousto-galvanic effects.
The Hall voltage in the mixed state close to the superconducting critical temperature is determined in the framework of the macroscopic approach. Only flux flow and macroscopic excitations motion are taken into account. The Hall anomaly can appear for rather low magnetic field values.
What is the fundamental reason for Hall Anomaly in Type II Superconductors: Independent Vortex Dynamics Effect or a Manifestation of Vortex Many-Body Effect? For a long time researchers in this field had not realized the importance of vortex many-body effects in the understanding of the so-called anomalous Hall effect. In this note I give a brief account of the situation in the light of a recent Phys Rev Lett.
It is shown that there are three kinds of vortices in a superconductor; a vortex with the fluxoid quantum 1 (VF), a new vortex with 0 (VZF), and a vortex with -1 (VAF), respectively. The Hall field via three vortices is studied and found to change its sign, depending of the relative strength of contributions via VF and VAF, similar to that of a system with two kinds of carriers. VZF is suggested to act as a domain wall between VF and VAF regions, accounting for the flux and antiflux regions observed in Nb films.
We discuss the main features of Hall tunneling of pancake vortices in superclean high-$T_{c}$ superconductors. The general formalism for the calculation of the lifetime of a vortex pinned in a metastable configuration is described. The results are applied to the problem of quantum tunneling of a pancake vortex from a columnar defect in the limit of a small driving current.
The excess Hall conductivity, resulting from thermal fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter, is calculated for a layered superconductor for an arbitrarily strong in-plane electric field and a perpendicular magnetic field in the frame of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. The fluctuation Hall conductivity is suppressed in high electric fields much stronger than the longitudinal one. For high-temperature superconductors we predict a pronounced non-Ohmic behavior of the excess Hall effect near the critical temperature in moderate magnetic fields and electric fields of the ord…
A drastic enhancement of the thermal Hall angle in $d$-wave superconductors was observed experimentally in a cuprate superconductor and in CeCoIn$_5$ at low temperatures and very weak magnetic field [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 86$, 890 (2001); Phys. Rev. B $\bf 72$, 214515 (2005)]. However, to the best of our knowledge, its microscopic calculation has not been performed yet. To study this microscopically, we derive the thermal Hall coefficient in extreme type-II superconductors with an isolated pinned vortex based on the augmented quasiclassical equations of superconductivity with the Lorentz force…
The anomalous Hall effect for type-II superconductors is investigated by random walk theorem. It is shown that the origin of Hall anomaly is induced by the thermally activated vortex bundle flow (TAVBF) over the directional-dependent energy barrier formed by the Magus force, random collective pinning force, and strong pinning force inside the vortex bundles. The directional-dependent potential barrier of the vortex bundles renormalizes the Hall and longitudinal resistivities strongly. Under the framework of present theory, it is also shown that the Hall anomaly is universal for type-II superco…
Broken time reversal symmetry (BTRS) in d+id' as well as in d+is superconductors is studied and is shown to yield current carrying surface states. We evaluate the temperature and thickness dependence of the resulting spontaneous magnetization and show a marked difference between weak and strong BTRS. We also derive the Hall conductance which vanishes at zero wavevector q and finite frequency w, however at finite q,w it has an unusual structure. The chirality of the surface states leads to quantum Hall effects for spin and heat transport in d+id' superconductors.
The interplay of the microscopic models and the symmetry considerations in application to the superconducting state of putative chiral superconductor Sr2RuO4 are presented. There is demonstrated that chiral two-band superconducting ordering recently proposed as candidate for the superconducting state in this material and having the long-expected property such as the intrinsic Hall effect does not exist as energetically disadvantageous in comparison with the states not supporting the Hall effect. Other chiral multi-band superconducting states with intraband pairing do not support an intrinsic H…
We discuss the surface impedance (Z=R-iX) of a normal-metal/superconductor proximity structure taking into account the spin-dependent potential at the junction interface. Because of the spin mixing transport at the interface, odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave Cooper pairs penetrate into the normal metal and cause the anomalous response to electromagnetic fields. At low temperature, the local impedance at a surface of the normal metal shows the nonmonotonic temperature dependence and the anomalous relation R>X. We also discuss a possibility of observing such anomalous impedance in experiments.
We propose a possible mechanism of topological Hall effect in inhomogeneous superconducting states. In our scenario, the Berry phase effect associated with spatially modulated superconducting order parameter gives rise to a fictitious Lorentz force acting on quasiparticles. In the case of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, the topological Hall effect is detected by applying an electromagnetic wave with a tuned wave number on a surface of the system.
We study a clean superconductor in the Hall configuration, in the framework of a purely dissipative time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau theory. We find situations in which the order parameter differs significantly from zero in a set of islands that appear to form a periodic structure. When the pattern of islands becomes irregular, it moves in or against the direction of the current and a Hall voltage is found. Tiny differences in the initial state may reverse the sign of the Hall voltage. When the average Hall voltage vanishes, the local Hall voltage does not necessarily vanish. We examine the inf…
We study edge states of non-centrosymmetric superconductors where spin-singlet d-wave pairing mixes with spin-triplet p (or f)-wave one by spin-orbit coupling. For dxy-wave pairing, the obtained Andreev bound state has an anomalous dispersion as compared to conventional helical edge modes. A unique topologically protected time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion appears at the edge. The charge conductance in the non-centrosymmetric superconductor junctions reflects the anomalous structures of the dispersions, particularly the time-reversal invariant Majorana fermion is manifested as a zero bia…
The Hall voltage sign reversal is consistently explained by the model in which vortices with the superconducting and normal state charge carriers are regarded as three subsystems mutually connected by interactions. The equations of motion for these three subsystems are solved simultaneously and a new formula for the Hall resistivity is obtained. It is shown that it is possible to explain qualitatively experimental data by this model.
We present a novel technique for the investigation of local variations of the critical current density in large bulk superconductors. In contrast to the usual Hall probe scanning technique, the sample is not magnetized as a whole before the scan, but locally by a small permanent magnet, which is fixed near the Hall probe, during the scanning process. The resulting signal can be interpreted as a qualitative measure of the local shielding currents flowing at the surface.
Quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor heterostructures emerged as a competitive platform to realize topological superconductors with chiral Majorana edge states as shown in recent experiments [He et al. Science {\bf 357}, 294 (2017)]. However, chiral Majorana modes, being extended, cannot be used for topological quantum computation. In this work, we show that quasi-one-dimensional quantum anomalous Hall structures exhibit a large topological regime (much larger than the two-dimensional case) which supports localized Majorana zero energy modes. The non-Abelian properties of a cross-sh…
The critical properties of a type-II superconductor model are investigated using a dual vortex representation. Computing the propagators of gauge field $\vec{A}$ and dual gauge field $\vec{h}$ in terms of a vortex correlation function, we obtain the values $η_A=1$ and $η_h=1$ for their anomalous dimensions. This provides support for a dual description of the Ginzburg-Landau theory of type-II superconductors in the continuum limit, as well as for the existence of a stable charged fixed point of the theory, not in the 3DXY universality class.
Motivated by Sr2RuO4, we consider a chiral superconductor where the gap is strongly suppressed along certain momentum directions. We evaluate the thermal Hall conductivity in the gapless regime, i.e., at temperature small compared with the impurity band width γ, taking the simplest model of isotropic impurity scattering. We find that, under favorable circumstances, this thermal Hall conductivity can be quite significant, and is smaller than the diagonal component (the universal thermal conductivity) only by a factor of 1/ ln(2 Δ_M/γ), where Δ_M is the maximum gap.
The new results summarized here, including a brief comparison with the paraconductivity, further suggest that the anomalous precursor (above Tc) diamagnetism recently observed in the underdoped La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 superconductor could be attributed to the presence, in addition to the conventional superconducting pair fluctuations, of Tc-inhomogeneities with long characteristic lengths associated with chemical disorder.
We investigate the intrinsic anomalous thermal Hall effect as an effective probe of the order parameters of non-unitary pairing states of the putative spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$. We consider all symmetry-allowed non-unitary states under magnetic fields comprehensively, and calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity arising from time-reversal symmetry-breaking Weyl point nodes of the gap functions, assuming three types of Fermi surfaces; ellipsoid-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and ring-shaped ones, which are predicted by previous band calculations. We find the nonzero anomalous thermal Hall …
The anomalous Hall effect in type-II conventional and high-Tc superconductors is investigated based on the proposed novel theory of the thermally activated motion of vortex bundles over a directional-dependent energy barrier. Our calculations demonstrate clearly that anomalous Hall effect is induced by the competition between the Magnus force and the random collective pinning force of the vortex bundle. The Hall as well as the longitudinal resistivity for constant temperature and constant applied magnetic field of type-II superconducting films and bulk materials are calculated. The reentry phe…
Charge transport properties of a diffusive normal metal /triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction are studied based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. % Contrary to the unconventional singlet superconductor junction case, the mid gap Andreev resonant state (MARS) at the interface of the TS is shown to enhance the proximity effect in the DN. % The total resistance of the DN/TS junction is drastically reduced and is completely independent of the resistance of the DN in the extreme case. % Such anomalous transport accompanies a giant zero-bias peak in the conductance s…
Motived by time-reversal symmetry breaking and giant anomalous Hall effect in kagome superconductor \textit{A}V$_3$Sb$_5$ (\textit{A} = Cs, K, Rb), we carried out the thermal transport measurements on CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. In addition to the anomalous Hall effect, the anomalous Nernst effect and the anomalous thermal Hall effect emerge. Interestingly, the longitudinal thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$ largely deviates from the electronic contribution obtained from the longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ by the Wiedemann-Franz law. In contrast, the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ is roughly consistent w…
Infrared (20-120 cm-1 and 900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in high Tc superconductors using sensitive polarization modulation techniques. Optimally doped YBCO thin films are studied at temperatures down to 15 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. At 1000 cm-1 the Hall conductivity varies strongly with temperature in contrast to the longitudinal conductivity which is nearly independent of temperature. The Hall scattering rate has a T^2 temperature dependence but, unlike a Fermi liquid, depends only weakly on frequency. The experiment puts severe constraints on theo…
Presented is the theory of thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ in the vortex state of high temperature cuprate superconductors in the clean limit. We show that $\lim_{T \to 0} κ_{xy}/T$ is a {\em staircase} function of 1/B with an envelope that scales as 1/B. The relation to the experiments is discussed.
We investigate anomalous Hall effect in a magnet coupled to a triplet superconductor under phase gradient. It is found that the anomalous Hall supercurrent arises from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the Hall supercurrent is characterized by even order terms of the exchange coupling, essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. We also discuss a possible candidate for magnetic structure to verify our prediction.
The present author has long argued, with concrete predictions, that both longitudinal and transverse (Hall) resistivities in the mixed state of superconductors are dominated by vortex many-body effect. Hence there is no need to introduce various ad hoc vortex dynamics theories. It is interesting to note this point of view is now slowly creeping into the work of his most fierce opponents.
We calculate the Hall conductivity for a spin-triplet superconductor, using a generalized pairing symmetry dependent on an arbitrary phase, $\vphi$. A promising candidate for such an order parameter is Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, whose superconducting order parameter symmetry is still subject to investigation. The value of this phase can be determined through Kerr rotation and DC Hall conductivity measurements. Our calculations impose significant constraints on $\vphi$.
We study junctions between superconductors mediated by the edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator. We show that such junctions exhibit a fractional Josephson effect, in which the current phase relation has a 4π, rather than a 2πperiodicity. This effect is a consequence of the conservation of fermion parity - the number of electrons modulo 2 - in a superconducting junction, and is closely related to the Z_2 topological structure of the quantum spin Hall insulator. Inelastic processes, which violate the conservation of fermion parity, lead to telegraph noise in the equilibrium supercurrent…
We study the properties of the "spin quantum Hall fluid" - a novel spin phase with quantized spin Hall conductance that is potentially realizable in superconducting systems with unconventional pairing symmetry. A simple realization is provided by a $d_{x^2-y^2} + id_{xy}$ superconductor which we argue has a dimensionless spin Hall conductance equal to two. A theory of the edge states of the $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ superconductor is developed. The properties of the transition to a phase with vanishing spin Hall conductance induced by disorder are considered. We construct a description of this tra…
Magnetotransport theory of layered superconductors in the flux flow steady state is revisited. Longstanding controversies concerning observed Hall sign reversals are resolved. The conductivity separates into a Bardeen-Stephen vortex core contribution, and a Hall conductivity due to moving vortex charge. This charge, which is responsible for Hall anomaly, diverges logarithmically at weak magnetic field. Its values can be extracted from magetoresistivity data by extrapolation of vortex core Hall angle from the normal phase. Hall anomalies in YBCO, BSCCO, and NCCO data are consistent with theoret…
Layered singlet paired superconductors with disorder and broken time reversal symmetry are studied. The phase diagram demonstrates charge-spin separation in transport. In terms of the average intergrain transmission and the interlayer tunnelling we find quantum Hall phases with spin Hall coefficients of 0 and 2 separated by a spin metal phase. We identify a spin metal-insulator localization exponent as well as a spin conductivity exponent of ~0.9. In presence of a Zeeman term an additional phase with spin Hall coefficient of 1 appears.
In a chiral superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry a ``spontaneous Hall effect'' may be observed. We analyze this phenomenon by taking into account the surface properties of a chiral superconductor. We identify two main contributions to the spontaneous Hall effect. One contribution originates from the Bernoulli (or Lorentz) force from spontaneous currents running along the surfaces of the superconductor. The other contribution has a topological origin and is related to the intrinsic angular momentum of Cooper pairs. The latter can be described in terms of a Chern-Simons-like term in…
Anomalous features of the proximity effect specific to diffusive normal metal / triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junctions are studied within the quasiclassical Green's function formalism. The pair amplitude $f_{N}$ as a function of energy $ε$ in DN, satisfies an anomalous relation, $% f_{N}(ε)=-f^{*}_{N}(-ε)$, contrary to that in singlet superconductor junctions case where $f_{N}(ε)=f^{*}_{N}(-% ε)$. Such an unusual $ε$ dependence is responsible for a zero energy peak in the local density of states and is a source of an anomalous penetration of the applied magnetic field into DN. % Our results …
The chiral topological superconductor in two dimensions has a full pairing gap in the bulk and a single chiral Majorana state at the edge. The vortex of the chiral superconducting state carries a Majorana zero mode which is responsible for the non-abelian statistics of the vortices. Despite intensive searches, this novel superconducting state has not yet been identified in nature. In this paper, we consider a quantum Hall or a quantum anomalous Hall state near the plateau transition, and in proximity to a fully gapped s-wave superconductor. We show that this hybrid system realizes the long sou…
We propose a spin Hall device to induce a large spin Hall effect in a superconductor/normal metal (SN) junction. The side jump and skew scattering mechanisms are both taken into account to calculate the extrinsic spin Hall conductivity in the normal metal. We find that both contributions are anomalously enhanced when the voltage between the superconductor and the normal metal approaches to the superconducting gap. This enhancement is attributed to the resonant increase of the density of states in the normal metal at the Fermi level. Our results demonstrate a novel way to control and amplify th…
We identify an intrinsic Hall effect in multiband chiral superconductors in the absence of a magnetic field (i.e., an anomalous Hall effect). This effect arises from interband transitions involving time-reversal symmetry-breaking chiral Cooper pairs. We discuss the implications of this effect for the putative chiral p-wave superconductor, Sr2RuO4, and show that it can contribute significantly to Kerr rotation experiments. Since the magnitude of the effect depends on the structure of the order parameter across the bands, this result may be used to distinguish between different models proposed f…
The detailed derivation of a theory for transport in quasi-two-dimensional metals, with small-angle elastic scattering and angle-independent inelastic scattering is presented. The transport equation is solved for a model Fermi surface representing a typical cuprate superconductor. Using the small-angle elastic and the inelastic scattering rates deduced from angle-resolved photoemission experiments, good quantitative agreement with the observed anomalous temperature dependence of the Hall angle in optimally doped cuprates is obtained, while the resistivity remains linear in temperature. The the…
We consider the Hall conductivity due to the motion of a vortex in a lattice-model of a clean superconductor, using a combination of general arguments, unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, and exact diagonalization. In the weak coupling limit, $k_F ξ\gg 1$, the sign of the Hall response of the superconducting state is the same as that of the normal (non-superconducting) state. For intermediate and strong coupling, however, ($k_F ξ\sim 1$) we find that the sign of the Hall response in the superconducting state can be opposite to that of the normal state. In addition, we find that the sign re…
We consider the Nernst and Hall effects in fluctuation regime of chiral superconductors above transition temperatures, that are raised not by conventional Lorentz force, but by asymmetric scattering due to fluctuations of the Berry phase of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. It is found that these effects can be more significant than conventional ones for cleaner samples, exhibiting qualitatively distinct behaviors. The results provide systematic and comprehensive understanding for recent experimental observations of the Nernst effect in a clean URu$_2$Si$_2$ sample, which is suggested to b…
In topological insulators doped with magnetic ions, spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism give rise to the quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here we show that in s-wave superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, magnetic impurity ions can generate topological vortices in the absence of external magnetic fields. Such vortices, dubbed quantum anomalous vortices, support robust Majorana zero-energy modes when superconductivity is induced in the topological surface states. We demonstrate that the zero-energy bound states observed in Fe(Te,Se) superconductors are possible realizations of the Ma…
The anomalous proximity effect between a d-wave superconductor and a surface layer with small electronic mean free path is studied theoretically in the framework of the Eilenberger equations. The angular and spatial structure of the pair potential and the quasiclassical propagators in the interface region is calculated selfconsistently. The variation of the spatially-resolved quasiparticle density of states from the bulk to the surface is studied. It is shown that the isotropic gapless superconducting state is induced in the disordered layer.
A parallel field negative magnetoresistance has been found in quench-condensed ultrathin films of amorphous bismuth in the immediate vicinity of the thickness-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The effect appears to be a signature of quantum fluctuations of the order parameter associated with the quantum critical point.
Multiply connected superconductors smaller than the coherence length show destructive superconductivity, characterized by reentrant quantum phase transitions driven by magnetic flux. We investigate the dependence of destructive superconductivity on flux, transverse magnetic field, temperature, and current in InAs nanowires with a surrounding epitaxial Al shell, finding excellent agreement with mean-field theory across multiple reentrant transitions. Near the crossover between destructive and nondestructive regimes, an anomalous metal phase is observed with temperature-independent resistance, c…
The problem of anomalously high levels of flicker noise observed in the normal state of the high-temperature superconductors is addressed. It is argued that the anomaly is the result of incorrect normalization of the power spectra according to the Hooge formula. A careful analysis of the available experimental data is given, which shows that the scaling of the spectral power with sample size is essentially different from the inverse proportionality. It is demonstrated that the measured spectra obey the law given by the recently proposed quantum theory of fundamental flicker noise.
We theoretically study the Josephson current in a superconductor/quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor junction by using the lattice Green function technique. When an in-plane external Zeeman field is applied to the quantum anomalous Hall insulator, the Josephson current $J$ flows without a phase difference across the junction $θ$. The phase shift $φ$ appealing in the current-phase relationship $J\propto \sin(θ-φ$) is proportional to the amplitude of Zeeman fields and depends on the direction of Zeeman fields. A phenomenological analysis of the Andreev reflection processes explains t…
A microscopic theory for the spin triplet Cooper pairing in non-centrosymmetric superconductors like CePt_3Si and CeTSi_3 (T=Rh, Ir) is presented. The lack of inversion symmetry leads to new anomalous spin fluctuations which stabilize the triplet part in addition to the singlet part originating from the centrosymmetric spin fluctuations. It is shown that both parts have similar nontrivial momentum dependence of A_1 type. Therefore the mixed singlet-triplet gap function has accidental line nodes on both Fermi surface sheets which are stable as function of temperature. This gap function explains…
By combining very low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy on a TiN film we have observed a non uniform state comprising of superconducting (S) and normal (N) areas. The local density of states displays a spatial dependence between S and N different from the usual proximity effect. We conclude that mesoscopic fluctuations might play a major role in accordance with recent theories on superconductor-normal metal quantum transition.
