We discuss the surface impedance (Z=R-iX) of a normal-metal/superconductor proximity structure taking into account the spin-dependent potential at the junction interface. Because of the spin mixing transport at the interface, odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave Cooper pairs penetrate into the normal metal and cause the anomalous response to electromagnetic fields. At low temperature, the local impedance at a surface of the normal metal shows the nonmonotonic temperature dependence and the anomalous relation R>X. We also discuss a possibility of observing such anomalous impedance in experiments.
In THz wave emission from intrinsic Josephson junctions in in-plane magnetic fields, emission intensity strongly depends on the surface impedance $Z$ similarly to the case without external magnetic fields. Cavity resonance modes are stabilized for $Z \ge 3$, and the fundamental mode gives the strongest emission. As the in-plane magnetic field increases for a fixed number of junctions, dynamical phase transitions seem to occur between the $π$-phase-kink state, various incommensurate phase-kink states, and in-phase state. As $Z$ varies, a crossover of the field profile of maximum intensity takes…
As possible states to characterize THz wave emission from intrinsic Josephson junctions without external fields, the McCumber-like state and $π$-phase-kink state have been proposed. In the present article it is numerically shown that both states are stationary according to the bias current $J$ and surface impedance $Z$. The McCumber-like state is stable for low $J$ and small $Z$. For higher $J$, the $π$-phase-kink state accompanied with symmetry breaking along the c axis is stable even for Z=1, though strong emission in the vicinity of cavity resonance points only takes place for larger $Z$. D…
We discuss dynamical response of odd-frequency Cooper pairs to electromagnetic field. By using the quasiclassical Green function method, we calculate the surface impedance (Z=R-iX) of a normal metal thin film which covers a superconductor. In contrast to the standard relation (i.e., R << X), the surface impedance in spin-triplet proximity structures shows anomalous behavior (i.e., R>X) at low temperatures. This unusual relation is a result of the penetration of odd-frequency pairs into the normal metal and reflects the negative Cooper pair density.
The dynamics of fluxons in long Josephson junctions is a well-known example of soliton physics and allows for studying highly nonlinear relativistic electrodynamics on a microscopic scale. Such fluxons are supercurrent vortices that can be accelerated by a bias current up to the Swihart velocity, which is the characteristic velocity of electromagnetic waves in the junction. We experimentally demonstrate slowing down relativistic fluxons in Josephson junctions whose bulk superconducting electrodes are replaced by thin films of a high kinetic inductance superconductor. Here, the amount of magnet…
Josephson junctions (JJs), where both time-reversal and inversion symmetry are broken, exhibit a phase shift $ϕ_0$ in their current-phase relation. This allows for an anomalous supercurrent to flow in the junction even in the absence of a phase bias between the superconductors. We show that a finite phase shift also manifests in the so-called Andreev interferometers - a device that consists of a mesoscopic conductor coupled to the $ϕ_0$-junction. Due to the proximity effect, the resistance of this conductor is phase-sensitive - it oscillates by varying the phase of the JJ. As a result, the qua…
We studied the anomalous Josephson current appearing at zero phase difference in junctions coupled with a ferromagnetic trilayer which has noncoplanar magnetizations. A $π/2$ junction with an equilibrium phase difference $π/2$ is obtained under suitable conditions. The equilibrium phase difference and the amplitude of the supercurrent are all tunable by the structure parameters. In addition to calculating the anomalous current using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we also developed a clear physical picture explaining the anomalous Josephson effect in the structure. We show that the triplet …
We study the transport properties of a diffusive Josephson junction between two spin-split superconductors made of superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator bilayers (FIS) on top of a 3D topological insulator (TI). We derive the corresponding Usadel equation describing the quasiclassical Green's functions in these systems and first solve the equation analytically in the weak-proximity case. We demonstrate the appearance of an anomalous phase in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also explore non-reciprocal electronic transport. Specifically, we calculate the junction's diode efficiency…
We demonstrate that in diffusive superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) junctions a finite, {\it anomalous}, Josephson current can flow even at zero phase difference between the S electrodes. The conditions for the observation of this effect are non-coplanar magnetization distribution and a broken magnetization inversion symmetry of the superconducting current. The latter symmetry is intrinsic for the widely used quasiclassical approximation and prevent previous works, based on this approximation, from obtaining the Josephson anomalous current. We show that this symmetry can be remo…
We investigate Meissner effect in normal metal/superconductor junctions where the interface is spin-active. We find that orbital magnetic susceptibility of the normal metal shows highly nontrivial behaviors. In particular, the magnetic susceptibility depends on the temperature in an oscillatory fashion, accompanied by its sign change. Correspondingly, magnetic field and current density can spatially oscillate in the normal metal. The possible spontaneous formation of the current pattern is also discussed. These results are attributed to the generation of odd-frequency pairing due to the spin-a…
Interfacial spin-orbit coupling in Josephson junctions offers an intriguing way to combine anomalous Hall and Josephson physics in a single device. We study theoretically how the superposition of both effects impacts superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor junctions' transport properties. Transverse momentum-dependent skew tunneling of Cooper pairs through the spin-active ferromagnetic insulator interface creates sizable transverse Hall supercurrents, to which we refer as anomalous Josephson Hall effect currents. We generalize the Furusaki-Tsukada formula, which got initially est…
We demonstrate unusual features of phase dynamics, IV-characteristics and magnetization dynamics of the $φ_0$ Josephson junction at small values of spin-orbit interaction, ratio of Josephson to magnetic energy and Gilbert damping. In particular, an anomalous shift of the ferromagnetic resonance frequency with an increase of Gilbert damping is found. The ferromagnetic resonance curves show the Duffing oscillator behaviour, reflecting the nonlinear nature of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. Based on the numerical analysis of each term in LLG equation we obtained an approximated equation d…
Measurements performed on superconductive networks shaped in the form of planar graphs display anomalously large currents when specific branches are biased. The temperature dependencies of these currents evidence that their origin is due to Cooper pair hopping through the Josephson junctions connecting the superconductive islands of the array. The experimental data are discussed in terms of a theoretical model which predicts, for the system under consideration, an inhomogeneous Cooper pair distribution on the superconductive islands of the network.
We investigate the effects of Andreev bound states due to the unconventional pairing on the inverse proximity effect of ferromagnet/superconductor junctions. Utilizing quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the magnetization penetrating into the superconductor. We show that in a wide parameter range the direction of the induced magnetization is determined by two factors: whether Andreev bound states are present at the junction interface and the sign of the spin-mixing angle. In particular, when Andreev bound states appear at the interface, the direction of the induced magnetization is op…
We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For th…
A nonstationary anomalous Hall current is calculated for a voltage biased Josephson junction, which is composed of two s-wave superconducting contacts deposited on the top of a three dimensional topological insulator (TI). A homogeneous Zeeman field was assumed at the surface of TI. The problem has been considered within the ballistic approximation and on the assumption that tunneling of electrons between contacts and the surface of TI is weak. In this regime the Josephson current has no features of the $4π$-periodic topological effect which is associated with Andreev bound states. It is shown…
We study the physics of the Josephson effect in nematic superconductors with $E_u$ odd parity in the Ginzburg-Landau approach. Two-component vector superconducting order parameter makes this effect rather unusual. We get that the Meissner kernel has off-diagonal components. We derive current-phase relations for different configurations of the junction, crystallographic axes of the sample, and nematicity direction. We show that an anomalous Josephson Hall effect can be observed in such a system without any magnetization. That is, for definite orientations of the junction and crystal axes, a com…
Superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor Josephson junctions have been fabricated in order to study the width dependence of the critical current, normal state resistance and flux periodicity of the critical current modulation in an external field. Previous literature reports suggest anomalous scaling in topological junctions due to the presence of Majorana bound states. However, for most realised devices, one would expect that trivial $2π$-periodic Andreev levels dominate transport. We also observe anomalous scaling behaviour of junction parameters, but the scaling can be well expla…
The anomalous proximity effect in dirty superconducting junctions is one of most striking phenomena highlighting the profound nature of Majorana bound states and odd-frequency Cooper pairs in topological superconductors. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of planar topological Josephson junctions, we describe the anomalous proximity effect in a superconductor/semiconductor hybrid, where an additional dirty normal-metal segment is extended from a topological Josephson junction. The topological phase transition in the topological Josephson junction is accompanied by a drastic chang…
We theoretically study the Josephson current in a superconductor/quantum anomalous Hall insulator/superconductor junction by using the lattice Green function technique. When an in-plane external Zeeman field is applied to the quantum anomalous Hall insulator, the Josephson current $J$ flows without a phase difference across the junction $θ$. The phase shift $φ$ appealing in the current-phase relationship $J\propto \sin(θ-φ$) is proportional to the amplitude of Zeeman fields and depends on the direction of Zeeman fields. A phenomenological analysis of the Andreev reflection processes explains t…
A mechanism of a superconductivity-mediated interaction of two magnets in a system of coupled superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) Josephson junctions (JJs) with spin-orbit interaction is proposed. The predicted indirect magnetic interaction favors the antiparallel orientation of the magnets. Its spatial scale is not restricted by the proximity length scales of the superconductor. Our estimates suggest that the interaction strength is not reduced considerably even at the macroscopic scales of the order of millimeters. At larger distances $l$ between the magnets the coupling consta…
A spontaneous symmetry breaking in a system often results in domain wall formation. The motion of such domain walls is utilized to realize novel devices like racetrack-memories, in which moving ferromagnetic domain walls store and carry information. Superconductors breaking time reversal symmetry can also form domains with degenerate chirality of their superconducting order parameter. Sr2RuO4 is the leading candidate of a chiral p-wave superconductor, expected to be accompanied by chiral domain structure. Here, we present that Nb/Ru/Sr2RuO4 topological superconducting-junctions, with which the…

We investigate anomalous Hall effect in a magnet coupled to a triplet superconductor under phase gradient. It is found that the anomalous Hall supercurrent arises from non-trivial structure of the magnetization. The magnetic structure manifested in the Hall supercurrent is characterized by even order terms of the exchange coupling, essentially different from that discussed in the context of anomalous Hall effect, reflecting the disspationless nature of supercurrent. We also discuss a possible candidate for magnetic structure to verify our prediction.
We study the quantum Andreev oscillation induced by interference of the edge chiral Majorana fermions in junctions made of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and superconductors (SCs). We show two chiral Majorana fermions on a QAH edge with SC proximity generically have a momentum difference $Δk$, which depends on the chemical potentials of both the QAH insulator and the SC. Due to the spatial interference induced by $Δk$, the longitudinal conductance of QAH-SC junctions oscillates with respect to the edge lengths and the chemical potentials, which can be probed via charge transport. Furt…
We show experimentally that a dc biased Josephson junction in series with a high-enough impedance microwave resonator emits antibunched photons. Our resonator is made of a simple micro-fabricated spiral coil that resonates at 4.4 GHz and reaches a 1.97 k$Ω$ characteristic impedance. The second order correlation function of the power leaking out of the resonator drops down to 0.3 at zero delay, which demonstrates the antibunching of the photons emitted by the circuit at a rate of 6 $10^7$ photons per second. Results are found in quantitative agreement with our theoretical predictions. This simp…
Gauge-invariant phase difference and critical currents of cross-type Josephson junctions with thin and narrow superconducting strips exposed to three-dimensional magnetic fields are theoretically investigated. When a sandwich-type Josephson junction in the xy plane is exposed to parallel magnetic fields Hx and Hy, the phase difference linearly depends on the spatial coordinates, x and y, and the critical currents exhibit the standard Fraunhofer-type magnetic interference. The perpendicular field Hz, on the other hand, nonlinearly modulates the distribution of the phase difference and the criti…
We develop a self-consistent approach for calculating the local impedance at a rough surface of a chiral $p$-wave superconductor. Using the quasiclassical Eilenberger-Larkin-Ovchinnikov formalism, we numerically find the pair potential, pairing functions, and the surface density of states taking into account diffusive electronic scattering at the surface. The obtained solutions are then employed for studying the local complex conductivity and surface impedance in the broad range of microwave frequencies (ranging from subgap to above-gap values). We identify anomalous features of the surface im…
The anomalous ground state phase shift in S/AF/S Josephson junctions in the presence of the Rashba SO-coupling is predicted and numerically investigated. It is found to be a consequence of the uncompensated magnetic moment at the S/AF interfaces. The anomalous phase shift exhibits a strong dependence on the value of the SO-coupling and the sublattice magnetization with the simultaneous existence of stable and metastable branches. It depends strongly on the orientation of the Neel vector with respect to the S/AF interfaces via the dependence on the orientation of the interface uncompensated mag…
We propose a Josephson junction setup based on a topological insulator (TI) thin film to detect Majorana states, which exploits the unique helical and extended nature of the TI surface state. When the magnetic flux through the junction is close to an integer number of flux quanta, Majorana states, present on both surfaces of the film, give rise to a narrow peak-dip structure in the current- phase relation by hybridizing at the edge of the junction. Moreover, the maximal Majorana-state contribution to Josephson current takes a (nearly) universal value, approximately equal to the supercurrent ca…

We study Josephson effect of $d$-wave superconductor (DS)/ferromagnet insulator(FI)/DS junctions on a surface of topological insulator (TI). We calculate Josephson current $I\left(φ\right) $ for various orientations of the junctions where $φ$ is the macroscopic phase difference between two DSs. In certain configurations, we find anomalous current-phase relation $I(φ)=-I\left( -φ+π\right)$ with $2π$ periodicity. In the case where the first order Josephson coupling is absent without magnetization in FI, $I(φ)$ can be proportional to $\cos φ$. The magnitude of the obtained Josephson current is en…
We study the nonequilibrium energy transport across a topological insulator/superconductor junction, by deriving an interfacial heat current formula through scattering wave approach. Several anomalous thermal properties are uncovered, such as thermal energy's Klein tunneling, asymmetric Kapitza resistance and negative differential thermal resistance. We expect these findings could have potential applications for the energy control in various hybridized mesoscopic systems.
Josephson junctions with topological insulator weak links can host low energy Andreev bound states giving rise to a current phase relation that deviates from sinusoidal behaviour. Of particular interest are zero energy Majorana bound states that form at a phase difference of $π$. Here we report on interferometry studies of Josephson junctions and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) incorporating topological insulator weak links. We find that the nodes in single junction diffraction patterns and SQUID oscillations are lifted and independent of chemical potential. At high tempe…
We report anomalous enhancement of the critical current at low temperatures in gate-tunable Josephson junctions made from topological insulator BiSbTeSe$_2$ nanoribbons with superconducting Nb electrodes. In contrast to conventional junctions, as a function of the decreasing temperature $T$, the increasing critical current $I_c$ exhibits a sharp upturn at a temperature $T_*$ around 20$\%$ of the junction critical temperatures for several different samples and various gate voltages. The $I_c$ vs. $T$ demonstrates a short junction behavior for $T>T_*$, but crosses over to a long junction behavio…
Periodically driven Kitaev chains are known to exhibit novel Floquet Majorana fermions and anomalous Floquet end modes. The fact that `quasienergy in Floquet systems is periodic' poses a difficulty in defining the ground state in periodically driven systems. To overcome this problem, we start with the ground state of the undriven Kitaev chain and gradually switch on the periodic driving in chemical potential over a timescale $τ$. The extent to which the single particle eigenstates of the undriven system get distributed among the Floquet states upon driving can be characterized by inverse parti…
