We have systematically investigated the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$$=$Dy, Tb, Ho and Yb) single crystals. Above a critical value of applied field ($H_c$), $R$MnO$_3$ undergo a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition below the ordering temperature ($T_{N}^{R}$) of $R^{3+}$ moment and a second-order FM to paramagnetic (PM) transition above $T_{N}^{R}$. Both $H$ and $T$ dependence of $M$ shows that the system is highly anisotropic in the FM as well as PM states and, as a result, the magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_{M}$) is extremely sensitive to the direction of applied field and can be negative (normal MCE) or positive (inverse MCE). For hexagonal HoMnO$_3$ and YbMnO$_3$ systems, a very small inverse MCE is observed only for $H$ parallel to c axis and it decreases with increasing $H$ and crosses over to normal one above $H_c$. On the other hand, for orthorhombic DyMnO$_3$ and TbMnO$_3$, though the inverse MCE disappears above $H_c$ along easy-axis of magnetization, it increases rapidly with $H$ along hard-axis of magnetization for $T$$\ll$$T_{N}^{R}$. Except for YbMnO$_3$, the values of $ΔS_{M}$, relative cooling power and adiabatic temperature change along easy-axis of magnetization are quite large in the field-induced FM state for a moderate field strength. The large values of these parameters, together with negligible hysteresis, suggest that the multiferroic manganites could be potential materials for magnetic refrigeration in the low-temperature region.
Recently the inverse magnetocaloric effect is observed for different compounds. However there is very rare for any manifestation of the effect to be seen in manganites. We have found inverse magnetocaloric effect in the case of polycrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$. Such phenomenon is attributed to the stabilization of antiferromagnetic state associated with inherent magnetic inhomogeneous phases for this compound.
Some recent experimental studies show the invisibility of antiferromagnetic transition in the cases of manganites when their particle size is reduced to nanometer scale. In complete contrast to these cases, we have observed the signature of antiferromagnetic transition in the magnetocaloric properties of nanocrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$ of average particle size 70 and 60 nm similar to its polycrystalline bulk form. The system exhibit inverse magnetocaloric effect in its polycrystalline and nanocrystalline form. An extra ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temperature for …
$La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ samples were prepared in nano- and polycrystalline forms by sol-gel and solid state reaction methods, respectively, and structurally characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties determined by ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements are discussed. The magnetocaloric effect in this nanocrystalline manganite is spread over a broader temperature interval than in the polycrystalline case. The relative cooling power of the poly- and nanocrystalline manganites is used to evaluate a possible application for magnetic cooling below room temp…
In the present work we analyze the influence of the charge-ordering on the magnetocaloric effect of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ manganites. The results for the samples with $x<$0.30 present the usual ferromagnetic behavior, peaking at the Curie temperature T$_C$. In contrast, for the samples above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering ($x\sim$0.30), an anomalous magnetic entropy change was observed below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{CO}$, persisting for lower temperatures. This effect is associated to a positive contribution to the magnetic entropy change due to charge-ordering, w…
Superlattices built from two antiferromagnetic (AFM) charge/orbital order compounds, $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ and $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$, have been studied as the thickness of $La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$ ($LCMO$) varied. High structural quality thin films were obtained on $LaAlO_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. An antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition, in addition to an enhancement of the coercivity, are observed as the $LCMO$ layer thickness increases. The small shift in the origin of the field-cooled hysteresis loop along the field axis indicates the presence of…
We present evidence of coexistence of electron paramagnetic resonance signal and anti-ferromagnetic resonance signals above the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transition ($T_N$) in $Pr_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3$. We identify the latter with AFM rare regions within the Griffiths-like phase scenario with the associated temperature scale $T^\ast$ extending above room temperature.
In this paper I report evidence that the antiferromagnetic and insulating ground state of MnO is caused by a nonadiabatic atomic-like motion as it is evidently the case in NiO. In addition, I show that the experimental findings of Goodwin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006), 96,~047209] corroborate my suggestion that the rhombohedral-like distortion in antiferromagnetic MnO as well as in antiferromagnetic NiO is an inner distortion of the monoclinic base-centered Bravais lattice of the antiferromagnetic phases.
The high temperature paramagnetic state in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} is characterized by the ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations with an anomalously small energy scale. The FM fluctuations show a precipitous decrease of the intensity at the charge ordering temperature T_{CO}, but persist below T_{CO}, and vanish at the AFM transition temperature T_{N}. These results demonstrate the importance of the spin ordering for the complete switching of the FM fluctuation in doped manganites.
We have performed unpolarized and polarized neutron diffraction experiments on monodisperse 8 nm and 13 nm antiferromagnetic MnO nanoparticles. For the 8 nm sample, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_N$ (114 K) is suppressed compared to the bulk material (119 K) while for the 13 nm sample $T_N$ (120 K) is comparable to the bulk. The neutron diffraction data of the nanoparticles is well described using the bulk MnO magnetic structure but with a substantially reduced average magnetic moment of 4.2$\pm$0.3 $μ_B$/Mn for the 8 nm sample and 3.9$\pm$0.2 $μ_B$/Mn for the 13 nm sample. An…
The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(…
A hybrid spin-electron system on one-dimensional tetrahedral chain, in which the localized Ising spin regularly alternates with the mobile electron delocalized over three lattice sites, is exactly investigated using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The system exhibits either the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ground state depending on whether the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and mobile electrons is considered. The enhanced magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization suggests a potential use of the investigated sys…
We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 (y=0.3) and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 manganites. The low temperature state of both ystems is the result of a competition between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The samples display magnetocaloric effect evidenced in an adiabatic temperature change during a metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase . As additional features, La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 exhibits phase separation characterized by the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases and Pr0.5Ca0.09Sr0.41MnO3 display…
We report on resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and absorption spectroscopy studies of exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$ in the absence of an external magnetic field. The observed resonant spectrum is characteristic of a magnetically ordered $^7F_1$ state that mirrors the Mn magnetic ordering, due to exchange coupling between the Eu $4f$ and Mn $3d$ spins. This is the first observation of long range magnetic order generated by exchange coupling of magnetic moments of formally non-magnetic Van Vleck ions, which is …
We report a detailed investigation of magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and exchange bias studies on a mixed metal oxide YFe0.5Cr0.5O3 belonging to perovskite family. Our results reveal that the compound is in canted magnetic state (CMS) where ferromagnetic correlations are present in an antiferromagnetic state. Magnetic entropy change of this compound follows a power law (deltaS_M ~ H^m) dependence of magnetic field. In this compound, inverse magnetocaloric effect (IMCE) is observed below 260 K while conventional magnetocaloric effect (CMCE) above it. The exponent m is found to be independ…
MnO thin films with various thicknesses and strains were grown on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition, then characterized using x-ray diffraction and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Films grown on (001)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit homogenous biaxial compressive strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced. For that reason, the frequency of doubly-degenerate phonon increases with the strain, and splits below Néel temperature TN due to the magnetic-exchange interaction. Films grown on (110)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit a huge phonon splitting already at room temperatur…
We report the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a polycrystalline plumbide sample of $\mathrm{Ho_2Pd_2Pb}$. Arc-melted $\mathrm{Ho_2Pd_2Pb}$ crystallizes in $\mathrm{Mo_2B_2Fe}$ type of tetragonal crystal structure and shows an antiferromagnetic behavior with Néel temperature of 4.5 K. The Arrott plots indicate that $\mathrm{Ho_2Pd_2Pb}$ undergoes a second-order antiferromagnetic phase transition. The calculated isothermal magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_m$), and relative power cooling (refrigeration capacity) for a change of field 0-8 T are 17.8 J.kg$^{-1}$.K$^{-1}$, and 680(497)~J.kg$^{-1}$ respec…
We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical fru…
We use neutron scattering to study the lattice and magnetic structure of the layered half-doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. On cooling from high temperature, the system first becomes charge- and orbital- ordered (CO/OO) near $T_{CO}=300$ K and then develops checkerboard-like antiferromagnetic (AF) order below $T_{N}=130$ K. At temperatures above $T_{N}$ but below $T_{CO}$ ($T_N<T<T_{CO}$), the appearance of short-range AF spin correlations suppresses the CO/OO induced orthorhombic strain, contrasting with other half-doped manganites, where AF order has no observable effect on the la…
We have studied the influence of antiferromagnetic ordering on the local dielectric moments of the MnO_5 and LuO_7 polyhedra by measuring neutron powder diffraction patterns of LuMnO_3 at temperatures near T_N. We show that the coupling is weak, because the magnetic exchange coupling is predominantly in the ab-plane of the MnO_5 trigonal bipyramids, and the electric dipole moments, originating in the LuO_7 polyhedra, are oriented along the hexagonal c-axis. Anomalies in the dielectric properties near T_N are thus caused by the geometric constraints between the MnO_5 and the LuO_7 polyhedra.
Detailed far-infrared spectra of the optical phonons are reported for antiferromagnetic MnO. Eigenfrequencies, phonon damping and effective plasma frequencies are studied as a function of temperature. Special attention is paid to the phonon splitting at the antiferromagnetic phase transition. The results are compared to recent experimental and theoretical studies of the spin-phonon coupling in frustrated magnets, which are explained in terms of a spin-driven Jahn-Teller effect, and to ab initio and model calculations, which predict phonon splitting induced by magnetic order.
Hexagonal Dy(0.5)Y(0.5)MnO3, a multiferroic rare-earth manganite with geometrically frustrated antiferromagnetism, has been investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. Below 3.4 K magnetic order is observed on both the Mn (antiferromagnetic) and Dy (ferrimagnetic) sublattices that is identical to that of undiluted hexagonal DyMnO3 at low temperature. The Mn moments undergo a spin reorientation transition between 3.4 K and 10 K, with antiferromagnetic order of the Mn sublattice persisting up to 70 K; the antiferromagnetic order in this phase is distinct from that observed…
We investigated optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the A-type antiferromagnetic ordering at a low temperature. We found that T- dependence of spectral weight transfer shows a clear correlation with the magnetic phase transition. In comparison with the optical conductivity results of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3, which has the CE-type antiferromagnetic charge ordering, we showed that optical properties of Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3 near the Neel temperature could be explained by a crossover from 3D to 2D metals. Details of spectral weight changes are consistent with the polaron picture.
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of antiferromagnetic Ising spin chain CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both monoclinic $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ and triclinic $γ$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$ exhibit field-induced metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state via an intermediate ferrimagnetic state with 1/3 magnetization plateau. Due to this field-induced metamagnetic transition, these systems show large conventional as well as inverse magnetocaloric effects. In $α$-CoV$_{2}$O$_{6}$, we observe field-induced complex magnet…
We present a study of the magnetocaloric effect in metallic systems exhibiting first-order magnetic transitions and focus on consequences of magnetic phase separation. We account for ferrimagnetic, ferromagnetic, and Neel antiferromagnetic order. Based on the archetypal Hubbard model being treated within the mean-field approximation, we provide and explore its implications on the field-induced entropy change in metallic system with phase separation. Chosen framework allows us to properly analyze phase volumes' dependence on parameters of phase-separated (PS) system. Moreover, an account for ph…
This work reports on magnetic, dielectric, thermodynamic and magnetoelectric properties of Gd$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$, with 0 \leq x \leq 0.4, with emphasis on the (x, T) phase diagram, towards unraveling the role of the driving mechanisms in stabilizing both magnetic and ferroelectric orderings. The (x, T) phase diagram reflects the effect of lattice distortions induced by the substitution of $Gd^{3+}$ ion by smaller $Y^{3+}$ ion, which gradually unbalances the antiferromagnetic against the ferromagnetic exchange interactions, enabling the emergence of ferroelectricity for higher concentratio…
We present results on resistivity ($ρ$), magnetization ($M$), thermal conductivity ($κ$), magnetostriction ($\frac{ΔL}{L(0)}$) and specific heat ($C_{p}$) of charge-orbital ordered antiferromagnetic Nd$_{0.8}$Na$_{0.2}$MnO$_{3}$ compound. Magnetic field-induced antiferromagnetic/charge-orbital ordered insulating to ferromagnetic metallic transition leads to giant magnetothermal conductivity and magnetostriction effect. The low-temperature irreversibility behavior in $ρ$, $M$, $κ$ and $\frac{ΔL}{L(0)}$ due to field cycling together with striking similarity among the field and temperature depend…
We investigate the effect of partial replacement of extended 5d Ir4+ sites by localized 3d Cr3+ moments on the magnetocaloric properties of Y2Ir2O7 (YIO) pyrochlore iridates. We find that Y2Ir2-xCrxO7 (YICO) undergoes cluster glass transition, possibly due to RKKY like interaction between localized Cr3+ moments occupying random sites in the pyrochlore network, mediated by 5d Ir conduction electrons. The coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters give rise to the conventional and inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE). We observe significant enhancement of conventional as well as …
The two-orbital double-exchange model is employed for the study of the magnetic and orbital orders in ($R$MnO$_3$)$_n$/($A$MnO$_3$)$_{2n}$ ($R$: rare earths; $A$: alkaline earths) superlattices. The A-type antiferromagnetic order is observed in a broad region of parameter space for the case of SrTiO$_3$ as substrate, in agreement with recent experiments and first-principles calculations using these superlattices. In addition, also a C-type antiferromagnetic state is predicted to be stabilized when using substrates like LaAlO$_3$ with smaller lattice constants than SrTiO$_3$, again in agreement…
We present measurements of the specific heat, magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and magnetic neutron diffraction carried out on single crystals of antiferromagnetic Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$, where highly localized Yb moments order at $T_{\rm N}=2.4$ K in zero field. The antiferromagnetic order was suppressed to $T_{\rm N}\rightarrow 0$ by applying a field of 1.85 T in the $ab$ plane. Magnetocaloric effect measurements show that the antiferromagnetic phase transition is always continuous for $T_{\rm N}>0$, although a pronounced step in the magnetization is observed at the critical field in both neut…
We have utilized the antiferromagnetic nature and structural/chemical compatibility of La$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_{3}$ with highly spin polarized La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ to prepare epitaxial exchange bias couples. A robust exchange bias (EB) shift of magnetization hysteresis with associated interfacial exchange energy J $\approx$ 0.13 erg/cm$^2$ at 10 K along with enhanced coercivity are reported. The EB effect was engineered to bring coercivity contrast between La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and cobalt films in La$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_{3}$/La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3…
We have studied selected rare earth doped and transition metal doped CeFe2 compounds by examining their structural, magnetic and magneto-thermal properties. With substitution of Ce by 5 and 10% Gd and 10% Ho, the Curie temperature can be tuned to the range of 267-318 K. Localization of Ce 4f electronic state with rare earth substitutions is attributed for the enhancement of Curie temperature. On the other hand, with Ga and Al substitution at the Fe site, system undergoes paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition and then to an antiferromagnetic phase on cooling. The magnetocaloric effect across…
The conventional paradigm of charge order for La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 for x=0.5 has been challenged recently by a Zener polaron picture emerging from experiments and theoretical calculations. The effective low energy Hamiltonian for the magnetic degrees of freedom has been found to be a cubic Heisenberg model, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and frustrating antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions in the planes, and antiferromagnetic interaction between planes. With linear spin wave theory and diagonalization of small clusters up to 27 sites we find that the behavior of the model int…
Strained Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO $_3$ trilayers were grown on (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. The coupling at the interfaces of several trilayers has been investigated from magnetization and electronic transport experiments. An increase of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ layer thickness induces a magnetic ordering in the strain layers and at the interfaces leading to ferromagnetic behavior and enhanced coercivity, while resistivity shows metal-like behaviors. These effects are not observed in the parent…
Magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline HoRhGe have been studied. This compound orders antiferromagnetically with a Neel temperature (TN) of 5.5 K and undergoes a first order metamagnetic transition at 2 K. It shows a large negative magnetoresistance of 25% at TN, for a field of 50 kOe. However, at 2 K and in lower fields, the magnetoresistance is found to be positive with a magnitude of about 12%, which is attributed to the first order metamagnetic transition. The compound also shows large magnetocaloric effect near its Neel temperature. Field dependence of magnetic…
We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on…
The low temperature behavior of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ manganites are known to undergo a transition at $x\sim$0.3, from an insulating ferromagnetic state, at low Ca concentration, to an insulating antiferromagnetic state. Above the onset concentration for the charge-ordering effect ($x\sim 0.3$), a metal-insulator transition induced by an external magnetic field is also observed and related to the collapse of the charge-ordered state. In this paper we show that the ferro-antiferromagnetic transition takes place in an inhomogeneous way: around the critical concentration the sample is a mix…
We investigate the effects of strain on antiferromagntic (AFM) single crystal thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ (x = 0.6). Nominally unstrained samples have strong magnetoresistance with anisotropic magnetoresistances (AMR) of up to 8%. Compressive strain suppresses magnetoresistance but generates AMR values of up to 63%. Tensile strain presents the only case of a metal-insulator transition and demonstrates a previously unreported AMR behavior. In all three cases, we find evidence of magnetic ordering and no indication of a global ferromagnetic phase transition. These behaviors are att…
We report the magnetic, thermal, magnetocaloric and transport properties of polycrystalline NdCuSi. The compound shows a weak antiferromagnetic ordering, as confirmed by different measurements. Arrott plots indicate that the magnetic phase transition is found to be second order in nature. The isothermal magnetic entropy change calculated using the magnetization data gives a value of 11.1 J/kg K for a field change of 50 kOe. The follows h2/3 dependence (h is the reduced field) with a negative intercept, which is predicted by mean field theory for second order phase transitions. Landau theory of…
Nd_0.5 Ca_0.5 MnO_3 (NCMO) nanoparticles (average diameter ~ 20 and 40 nm) are synthesized by polymeric precursor sol-gel method and characterized by X- ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometery and resistivity measurements. Both single crystalline and polycrystalline particles are present in the samples and they are found to retain the orthorhombic structure of the bulk NCMO. However, most strikingly, in the 20 nm particles, the charge ordered (CO) and the antiferromagn…
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of EuHo$_2$O$_4$ and EuDy$_2$O$_4$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements down to 2 K. These compounds undergo a field-induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition and exhibit a huge entropy change. For a field change of 0-8 T, the maximum magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature changes are 30 (25) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and 12.7 (16) K, respectively and the corresponding value of refrigerant capacity is 540 (415) J kg$^{-1}$ for EuHo$_2$O$_4$ (EuDy$_2$O$_4$). These magnetocaloric parameters also remain large do…
The antiferromagnet Mn$_5$Si$_3$ has recently attracted attention because a noncollinear spin arrangement has been shown to produce a topological anomalous Hall effect and an inverse magnetocaloric effect. Here we synthesize single crystals of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ using flux growth. We determine the phase diagram through magnetization and measure the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect. We find the collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic phases at low temperatures and, in addition, a third magnetic phase, in between the two antiferromagnetic phases which has ferromagnetic character. The latter …
Single crystalline (Bi,Ca)MnO3 (74< %Ca <82) were studied with neutron scattering, electron diffraction and bulk magnetic measurement. We discovered dynamic ferromagnetic spin correlations at high temperatures, which are replaced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at a concomitant charge ordering and structural transition. Our results indicate that thermal-activated hopping of the Jahn-Teller active e_g electrons in these insulating materials, nevertheless, induce ferromagnetic interaction through double-exchange mechanism. It is the ordering of these charges competing with the double-exch…
We have investigated the influence of 3d-4f spin interaction on magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of DyCrO$_4$ and HoCrO$_4$ compounds by magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Both the compounds exhibit complicated magnetic properties and huge magnetic entropy change around the ferromagnetic transition due to the strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions. For a field change of 8 T, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_{M}^{max}$), adiabatic temperature change ($ΔT_{ad}$), and refrigerant capacity (RC) reach 29 J kg$^{-1…
Ba4NbMn3O12 is reported, synthesized by a solid state method in air. The crystal structure, determined by performing refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data by the Rietveld method, consists of Mn3O12 trimers in the configuration of three face-sharing MnO6 octahedra, with the trimers arranged in triangular planes. An effective moment of 4.82 μB/f.u is observed and competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions between Mn ions are inferred from the Weiss temperature of -4 K and the ferrimagnetic ordering transition of approximately 42 K. Ba4NbMn3O12 is a semicon…
The magnetocaloric effect in alternating magnetic fields has been investigated in Pr1-xAgxMnO3 manganites with x=0.05-0.25. The stepwise reversal of the sign of the magnetocaloric effect has been revealed in a weakly doped sample (x=0.05) at low temperatures (~80 K). This reversal is attributed to the coexistence of the ferromagnetic and canted antiferromagnetic phases with different critical temperatures.
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain with competing interactions. We computed the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin chain in the thermodynamical limit. This is obtained by means of the solution of a set of non-linear integral equations, which describes the thermodynamics of the model. We also provide results for the entropy $S$ and the isentropes in the $(H,T)$ plane.
We investigate the magnetocaloric properties of the two-dimensional frustrated J1-J2 model on a square lattice. This model describes well the magnetic behavior of two classes of quasi-two-dimensional S = 1/2 vanadates, namely the Li2VOXO4 (X = Si, Ge) and AA'VO(PO4)2 (A, A' = Pb, Zn, Sr, Ba) compounds. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) consists in the adiabatic temperature change upon changing the external magnetic field. In frustrated systems, the MCE can be enhanced close to the saturation field because of massive degeneracies among low lying excitations. We discuss results for the MCE in the …
Neutron diffraction studies of antiferromagnetic MnO confined to MCM-41 type matrices with channel diameters 24-87 A demonstrate a continuous magnetic phase transition in contrast to a discontinuous first order transition in the bulk. The character of the magnetic transition transforms with decreasing channel diameter, showing the decreasing critical exponent and transition temperature, however the latter turns out to be above the Néel temperature for the bulk. This enhancement is explained within the framework of Landau theory taking into consideration the ternary interaction of the magnetic …
The magnetocaloric effect is studied at the transition to saturation in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the simplest two-dimensional lattices, namely the square and the triangular lattice. Numerical results are presented for the entropy which are consistent with identical universal properties. However, the absolute values of the entropy are bigger on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice than on the non-frustrated square lattice, indicating that frustration improves the magnetocaloric properties.
We have investigated the magnetic and dielectric properties of orthorhombic Eu$_{1-y}$Y$_y$MnO$_3$ ($0\leq y\leq 0.6$) single crystals without the presence of the 4$f$ magnetic moments of the rare-earth ions. In $y\geq 0.2$, the magnetic-structure driven ferroelectricity is observed. The ferroelectric transition temperature is steeply reducing with increasing $y$. In $y\geq 0.52$, two ferroelectric phases ($P\parallel a$ and $P\parallel c$) are coexistent at low temperatures. In these phases, ferroelectricity has different origin, which is evidenced by the distinctive poling-electric-field dep…
We investigate the magnetic, thermal, and magnetocaloric properties of the intermetallic HoAl$_{3}$ compounds with two different crystal structures. The room-temperature equilibrium trigonal phase HoAl$_{3}$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperature $T^{\rm tri}_{\rm N} =$ 9.8 K. The AFM ordering of the compound is strong against the magnetic field, so that inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is found even under a magnetic field change of 0-50 kOe. The high-pressure cubic phase HoAl3, prepared by a rapid-solidification process, is antiferromagnetically ordered bel…
The zero temperature Mott transition region in antiferromagnetic, spin S=5/2 MnO is probed using the correlated band theory LSDA+U method. The first transition encountered is an insulator-insulator volume collapse within the rocksalt structure that is characterized by an unexpected Hund's rule violating `spin-flip' moment collapse. This spin-flip to S=1/2 takes fullest advantage of the anisotropy of the Coulomb repulsion, allowing gain in the kinetic energy (which increases with decreasing volume) while retaining a sizable amount of the magnetic exchange energy. While transition pressures vary…
We have studied the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn1+xGe1-x(R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1) series by means of magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity measurements. It has been found that all the compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63). The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest that all the compounds are antiferromagnetic. Large negative values of θp in case of GdSn1.1Ge0.9 and TbSn1.1Ge0.9 indicate that strong antiferromagnetic interactions are involved, which is also refl…
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
We study the magnetocaloric effect for the integrable antiferromagnetic high-spin chain. We present an exact computation of the Grüneisen parameter, which is closely related to the magnetocaloric effect, for the quantum spin-s chain on the thermodynamical limit by means of Bethe ansatz techniques and the quantum transfer matrix approach. We have also calculated the entropy S and the isentropes in the (H,T) plane. We have been able to identify the quantum critical points H_c^{(s)}=2/(s+1/2) looking at the isentropes and/or the characteristic behaviour of the Grüneisen parameter.
Measurements of thermal conductivity (kappa) vs temperature are reported for a series of Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2) specimens. For the undoped (x=0), G-type antiferromagnetic compound a large enhancement of kappa below the Neel temperature (T_N ~ 125 K) indicates a strong coupling of heat-carrying phonons to the spin system. This enhancement exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior with increasing x and correlates remarkably well with the small ferromagnetic component of the magnetization reported previously [Neumeier and Cohn, Phys. The presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) can significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of a material at finite temperatures T. This is reflected, e.g., in the entropy landscape S(T, r) in the vicinity of a QCP, yielding particularly strong variations for varying the tuning parameter r such as pressure or magnetic field B. Here we report on the determination of the critical enhancement of $ δS / δB$ near a B-induced QCP via absolute measurements of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE), $(δT / δB)_S$, and demonstrate that the accumulation of entropy around the QCP can be used for effici…
The half-doped manganite, (Eu0.4La0.1)(Sr0.4Ca0.1)MnO3, has been found to exhibit sharp step-like metamagnetic transitions below 5 K. The number of magnetic steps increases with decreasing temperature and this number suddenly rises from 3 at 2 K to ~50 at 1.7 K. The self-similar character of the multiple magnetic steps at reduced temperature identifies these steps as avalanche-like transitions. The occurrence of a multitude of magnetic steps at low temperatures, the decreasing effect of magnetic field sweep rate on the step-like metamagnetism, and the decreasing irreversibility of transition i…
