We investigate the magnetocaloric properties of the two-dimensional frustrated J1-J2 model on a square lattice. This model describes well the magnetic behavior of two classes of quasi-two-dimensional S = 1/2 vanadates, namely the Li2VOXO4 (X = Si, Ge) and AA'VO(PO4)2 (A, A' = Pb, Zn, Sr, Ba) compounds. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) consists in the adiabatic temperature change upon changing the external magnetic field. In frustrated systems, the MCE can be enhanced close to the saturation field because of massive degeneracies among low lying excitations. We discuss results for the MCE in the two distinct antiferromagnetic regimes of the phase diagram. Numerical finite temperature Lanczos as well as analytical methods based on the spin wave expansion are employed and results are compared. We give explicit values for the saturation fields of the vanadium compounds. We predict that at subcritical fields there is first a (positive) maximum followed by sign change of the MCE, characteristic of all magnetically ordered phases.
We have investigated the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of EuHo$_2$O$_4$ and EuDy$_2$O$_4$ by magnetization and heat capacity measurements down to 2 K. These compounds undergo a field-induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition and exhibit a huge entropy change. For a field change of 0-8 T, the maximum magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature changes are 30 (25) J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and 12.7 (16) K, respectively and the corresponding value of refrigerant capacity is 540 (415) J kg$^{-1}$ for EuHo$_2$O$_4$ (EuDy$_2$O$_4$). These magnetocaloric parameters also remain large do…
The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo simulations…
Magnetization, entropy and magnetocaloric properties of various geometrically frustrated tetrahedra-based Ising antiferromagnetic nanoclusters with corner-, edge-, and face-sharing topologies are studied by exact enumeration. It is found that the studied properties strongly depend on the nanocluster topology and can be very different from those of a single tetrahedron as well as the pyrochlore lattice formed by an infinite number of corner-sharing tetrahedra. From the magnetocaloric point of view an important difference from the latter two systems is the absence of the ground-state zero-magnet…
We investigate the magnetocaloric properties of certain antiferromagnetic spin systems that have already been or very likely can be synthesized as magnetic molecules. It turns out that the special geometric frustration which is present in antiferromagnets that consist of corner-sharing triangles leads to an enhanced magnetocaloric effect with high cooling rates in the vicinity of the saturation field. These findings are compared with the behavior of a simple unfrustrated spin ring as well as with the properties of the icosahedron. To our surprise, also for the icosahedron large cooling rates c…
We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated antiferromagnet \Eu. Monte Carlo simulations indicate a large magnetic entropy change $ΔS_M^{\text{max}} \sim 5.14$ J kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at $T=2.45$K for a moderate change in the external magnetic field $ΔB=1.2$ Tesla. The highest value of $ΔS_M$ seems to be associated with the presence of a multicritical point in the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagram (at $B_m\sim 1.2$ Tesla and $T_m\sim 2.2$ K) but it persists with similar large values for a broad range of temperatures $T\lesssim T_m$. Single crystal…
The magnetocaloric effect is studied at the transition to saturation in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the simplest two-dimensional lattices, namely the square and the triangular lattice. Numerical results are presented for the entropy which are consistent with identical universal properties. However, the absolute values of the entropy are bigger on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice than on the non-frustrated square lattice, indicating that frustration improves the magnetocaloric properties.
As materials with suppressed ordering temperatures and enhanced ground state entropies, frustrated magnetic oxides are ideal candidates for cryogenic magnetocaloric refrigeration. While previous materials design has focused on tuning the magnetic moments, their interactions, and density of moments on the lattice, there has been relatively little attention to frustrated lattices. Prior theoretical work has shown that the magnetocaloric cooling rate at the saturation field is proportional to a macroscopic number of soft mode excitations that arise due to the classical ground state degeneracy. Th…
An external magnetic field induces large relative changes in the entropy of one-dimensional quantum spin systems at finite temperatures. This leads to a magnetocaloric effect, i.e. a change in temperature during an adiabatic (de)magnetization process. Several examples of one-dimensional spin-1/2 models are studied by employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation and exact diagonalization. During an adiabatic (de)magnetization process temperature drops in the vicinity of a field-induced zero-temperature quantum phase transition. Comparing different levels of frustration, we find that more frustrat…
The magnetic and magnetocaloric (MCE) properties were studied in a stuffed honeycomb antiferromagnet GdInO3 polycrystalline. No long-range magnetic ordering was observed with only a sharp upturn in the temperature dependent magnetization curves at TN ~ 2.1 K. The large value of frustration index value ~ 5.0 suggests short-range antiferromagnetic interactions existing between the Gd3+ moments in this frustrated magnetic system. Negligible thermal and magnetic hysteresis suggest a second-order feature of phase transition and a reversible magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in GdInO3 compound. In the mag…
The $J_1$-$J_2$ quantum spin sawtooth chain is a paradigmatic one-dimensional frustrated quantum spin system exhibiting unconventional ground-state and finite-temperature properties. In particular, it exhibits a flat energy band of one-magnon excitations accompanied by an enhanced magnetocaloric effect for two singular ratios of the basal interactions $J_1$ and the zigzag interactions $J_2$. In our paper, we demonstrate that one can drive the spin system into a flat-band scenario by applying an appropriate electric field, thus overcoming the restriction of fine-tuned exchange couplings $J_1$ a…
Double magnetic transition, complex field-induced phases, and large magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated garnet compound Mn$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$Ge$_{3}$O$_{12}$
Frustrated magnets in high magnetic field have a long history of offering beautiful surprises to the patient investigator. Here we present the results of extensive classical Monte Carlo simulations of a variety of models of two dimensional magnets in magnetic field, together with complementary spin wave analysis. Striking results include (i) a massively enhanced magnetocaloric effect in antiferromagnets bordering on ferromagnetic order, (ii) a route to an $m=1/3$ magnetization plateau on a square lattice, and (iii) a cascade of phase transitions in a simple model of AgNiO$_2$.
We discuss our numerical results on the properties of the S = 1/2 frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice as a function of temperature and frustration angle phi = atan(J2/J1) in an applied magnetic field. We cover the full phase diagram of the model in the range -pi <= phi <= pi. The discussion includes the parameter dependence of the saturation field itself, and addresses the instabilities associated with it. We also discuss the magnetocaloric effect of the model and show how it can be used to uniquely determine the effective interaction constants of the compounds which were inv…

Frustrated lanthanide oxides with dense magnetic lattices are of fundamental interest for their potential in cryogenic refrigeration due to a large ground state entropy and suppressed ordering temperatures, but can often be limited by short-range correlations. Here, we present examples of frustrated fcc oxides, Ba$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and Sr$_2$GdSbO$_6$ and the new site-disordered analog Ca$_2$GdSbO$_6$ ([CaGd]$_A$[CaSb]$_B$O$_6$), in which the magnetocaloric effect is influenced by minimal superexchange ($J_1 \sim 10$ mK). We report on the crystal structures using powder x-ray diffraction and the bu…
We overview physical effects of exchange frustration and quantum spin fluctuations in (quasi-) two dimensional (2D) quantum magnets ($S=1/2$) with square, rectangular and triangular structure. Our discussion is based on the $J_1$-$J_2$ type frustrated exchange model and its generalizations. These models are closely related and allow to tune between different phases, magnetically ordered as well as more exotic nonmagnetic quantum phases by changing only one or two control parameters. We survey ground state properties like magnetization, saturation fields, ordered moment and structure factor in …
Strong geometrical frustration in magnets leads to exotic states, such as spin liquids, spin supersolids and complex magnetic textures. SrCu2(BO3)2, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the archetypical Shastry-Sutherland lattice, exhibits a rich spectrum of magnetization plateaus and stripe-like magnetic textures in applied fields. The structure of these plateaus is still highly controversial due to the intrinsic complexity associated with frustration and competing length scales. We reveal new magnetic textures in SrCu2(BO3)2 via magnetostriction and magnetocaloric measurements in fields …
We present a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic study of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) $s = \tfrac{1}{2}$ frustrated spin-chain system linarite. Susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, and thermal-expansion measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic phase diagram. In particular, for magnetic fields along the b axis five different magnetic regions have been detected, some of them exhibiting short-range-order effects. The experimental magnetic entropy and magnetization are compared to a theoretical modelling of these quantities u…
Strongly frustrated antiferromagnets such as the magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}, the kagome, or the pyrochlore lattice exhibit a variety of fascinating properties like low-lying singlets, magnetization plateaus as well as magnetization jumps. During recent years exact many-body eigenstates could be constructed for several of these spin systems. These states become ground states in high magnetic fields, and they also lead to exotic behavior. A key concept to an understanding of these properties is provided by independent localized magnons. The energy eigenvalue of these n-magnon states scales lin…
The variational cluster approximation is used to study the frustrated Hubbard model at half filling defined on the two-dimensional square lattice with anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameters. We calculate the ground-state phase diagrams of the model in a wide parameter space for a variety of lattice geometries, including square, crossed-square, and triangular lattices. We examine the Mott metal-insulator transition and show that, in the Mott insulating phase, magnetic phases with Néel, collinear, and spiral orders appear in relevant parameter regions, and in an intermediate region…
We present a model compound with a spin-1/2 spatially anisotropic frustrated square lattice, in which three antiferromagnetic interactions and one ferromagnetic interaction are competing. We observe an unconventional gradual increase in the low-temperature magnetization curve reminiscent of the quantum critical behavior between gapped and gapless phases. In addition, the specific heat and electron spin resonance signals indicate one-dimensional characteristics. These results demonstrate quantum critical behavior associated with one dimensionalization caused by frustrated interactions in the sp…
We investigate the effects of diamagnetic doping in the solid-solution series $Tb_{1-x}Y_{x}(HCO_{2})_{3}$, in which the parent $Tb(HCO_{2})_{3}$ phase has previously been shown to host a combination of frustrated and quasi-1D physics, giving rise to a triangular Ising antiferromagnetic ground state that lacks long range 3D order. Heat capacity measurements show three key features: (i) a low temperature Schottky anomaly is observed, which is constant as a function of x; (ii) the transition temperature and associated entropy change are both surprisingly robust to diamagnetic doping; and (iii) a…
Frustrated magnets with a strong spin-lattice coupling can show rich magnetic phases and the associated fascinating phenomena. A promising platform is the breathing pyrochlore magnet CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ with localized $S=3/2$ Cr$^{3+}$ ions, which is proposed to be effectively viewed as an $S=6$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the face-centered-cubic lattice. Here, we unveil that CuInCr$_{4}$S$_{8}$ exhibits a complex magnetic phase diagram with a small phase pocket ($A$ phase) by means of magnetization, magnetostriction, magnetocapacitance, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements in pulsed high …
We analyze the zero temperature phase diagrams of the spin S quantum antiferromagnet on square and triangular lattices with competing nearest and next-nearest exchange interactions as well as biquadratic couplings. We approach the problem from the large S limit. Our primary focus is on determining the extent to which the existence and character of any quantum disordered phases can be inferred from this approach.
In a strongly frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet with diagonal coupling J', for J/(2J') < 1, an incommensurate spiral state with propagation vector Q = (π+/- δ, π+/- δ) near (π,π) competes closely with the Neel collinear antiferromagnetic ground state. For classical Heisenberg spins the energy of the spiral state can be lowered as it adapts to the distortion of the crystal lattice. As a result, a weak superstructural modulation such as exist in doped cuprates might stabilize an incommensurate spiral phase for some range of the parameter J/(2J') close to 1.
Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin-dimer compound based on pairs of S=1, 3d^2, Mn^{5+} ions arranged on a triangular lattice. Antiferromagnetic intradimer exchange leads to a singlet ground state in zero-field. Here we present the first results of thermodynamic measurements for single crystals probing the high-field ordered states of this material associated with closing the spin gap to the excited triplet states. Specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, and torque magnetometry measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 32 T and temperatures down to 20 mK. For fields above H_{c1} ~ 8.7 T, these measure…
Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaqu…
We present a new model compound with the S = 1/2 frustrated square lattice composed of the charge-transfer salt (o-MePy-V)PF6. Ab initio calculations indicate the formation of an S = 1/2 square lattice, in which six types of nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic- and antiferromagnetic interactions cause frustration. By applying a magnetic field, we observe an unusually gradual increase of magnetization and a subsequent 1/2-plateau-like behavior. A numerical analysis using the tensor network method qualitatively demonstrates such behaviors and suggests a collinear ordered state and a field-enhanced qu…
We present Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations of an exchange-anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions. The ground state phase diagram shows two classical magnetically ordered phases for dominating antiferromagnetic S^z-interactions and for large quantum fluctuations a ferromagnetic order in the x-y plane. In between a finite region is detected where neither classical nor quantum mechanical order, e.g. long-ranged dimer correlations, are found.
An adiabatic demagnetization process is studied in Gd2Ti2O7, a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice. In contrast to conventional paramagnetic salts, this compound can exhibit a temperature decrease by a factor of ten in the temperature range below the Curie-Weiss constant. The most efficient cooling is observed in the field interval between 120 and 60 kOe corresponding to a crossover between saturated and spin-liquid phases. This phenomenon indicates that a considerable part of the magnetic entropy survives in the strongly correlated state. According to the theoreti…
We report magnetocaloric and magnetic-torque evidence that in Cs$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ -- a geometrically frustrated Heisenberg $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet -- quantum fluctuations stabilize a series of spin states at simple increasing fractions of the saturation magnetization $M_{s}$. Only the first of these states -- at $M={1/3}M_{s}$ -- has been theoretically predicted. We discuss how the higher fraction quantum states might arise and propose model spin arrangements. We argue that the first-order nature of the transitions into those states is due to strong lowering of the energies b…
31P nuclear and muon spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements in SrZnVO(PO4)2, a S=1/2 frustrated magnet on a square lattice, are presented. The temperature (T) dependence of the in-plane correlation length ξ(T) is derived and it is shown that the overall behaviour is analogous to the one found for non-frustrated systems but with a reduced spin stiffness. The temperature dependence of ξ(T) in SrZnVO(PO4)2 is compared to the one of other frustrated magnets on a square lattice with competing nearest neighbour (J1) and next-nearest neighbour (J2) exchange couplings and it is shown that ξ(T) prog…
We study a ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin system on the square lattice, with nearest neighbors interaction J_1 frustrated by second J_2 and third J_3 neighbors antiferromagnetic interactions, using a mean field theory for the Schwinger boson representation of spins. For J_3=0 we find that the boundary between the ferromagnetic and the collinear classical phases shifts to smaller values of J_2 when quantum fluctuations are included. Along the line J_2/|J_1|= 1 the boundaries between the collinear and incommensurate regions are strongly shifted to larger values with respect to the classical case.…
The spin-1/2 J1-J2 antiferromagnet is a prototypical model for frustrated magnetism and one possible candidate for a realization of a spin liquid phase. The generalization of this system on the anisotropic square lattice is given by the J1-J2-J1'-J2' Heisenberg model, which can be treated by a renormalization group (RG) analysis of coupled frustrated chains. The J1-J2-J1'-J2'-model shows an interesting interplay of Néel order, dimerization, and spin liquid behavior. The analytical findings supported by numerical results indicate that for the isotropic model the phase at intermediate coupling s…
The spin dynamics of the layered square-lattice vanadate Pb2VO(PO4)2 is investigated by electron spin resonance at various magnetic fields and at temperatures above magnetic ordering. The linewidth divergence towards low temperatures seems to agree with isotropic Heisenberg-type spin exchange suggesting that the spin relaxation in this quasi-two dimensional compound is governed by low-dimensional quantum fluctuations. However, a weak easy- plane anisotropy of the g factor points to the presence of a planar XY type of exchange. Indeed, we found that the linewidth divergence is described best by…
Using extensive classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the fully frustrated transverse field Ising model on the square lattice. We show that pure columnar order develops in the low-field phase above a surprisingly large length scale, below which an effective U(1) symmetry is present. The same conclusion applies to the Quantum Dimer Model with purely kinetic energy, to which the model reduces in the zero-field limit, as well as to the stacked classical version of the model. By contrast, the 2D classical version of the model is shown to de…
We present results from our analysis of the finite-temperature properties of the spin 1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. The analysis is based on the exact diagonalization of small clusters with 16 and 20 sites utilizing the finite-temperature Lanczos method. In particular, we focus on the temperature dependence of the third-order magnetic susceptibility as a method to resolve the ambiguity of exchange constants. We discuss the entire range of the frustration angle $ϕ=\tan^{-1}(J_{2}/J_{1})$ parameterizing the different possible phases of the model, including the large r…
We study the low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a number of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets which support localized magnon states in the vicinity of the saturation field. For this purpose we use 1) a mapping of the low-energy degrees of freedom of spin systems onto the hard-core object lattice gases and 2) an exact diagonalization of finite spin systems of up to N=30 sites. The considered spin systems exhibit universal behavior which is determined by a specific hard-core object lattice gas representing the independent localized magnon states. We test the lattice gas description by…
We report the magnetic and calorimetric measurements in single crystal samples of the square lattice $J_{1}-J_{2}$ quantum antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. An investigation of the scaling of magnetization reveals a "dimensionality reduction" indicative of a strong degree of geometric frustration. Below a characteristic temperature of $T^{\ast}\simeq150$~mK we observe the emergence of an additional strongly fluctuating quantum phase close to full magnetic saturation. It is separated from the magnetically ordered state by first- and second-order phase transitions, depending on the orientation…
The J1-J2 model on a square lattice exhibits a rich variety of different forms of magnetic order that depend sensitively on the ratio of exchange constants J2/J1. We use bulk magnetometry and polarized neutron scattering to determine J1 and J2 unambiguously for two materials in a new family of vanadium phosphates, Pb2VO(PO4)2 and SrZnVO(PO4)2, and we find that they have ferromagnetic J1. The ordered moment in the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state is reduced, and the diffuse magnetic scattering is enhanced, as the predicted bond-nematic region of the phase diagram is approached.
Using the coupled-cluster method for infinite lattices and the exact diagonalization method for finite lattices, we study the influence of an exchange anisotropy Delta on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 frustrated J1-J2 XXZ antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We find that increasing Delta>1 (i.e. an Ising type easy-axis anisotropy) as well as decreasing Delta<1 (i.e. an XY type easy-plane anisotropy) both lead to a monotonic shrinking of the parameter region of the magnetically disordered quantum phase. Finally, at Delta~1.9 this quantum phase disappears, whereas in pure XY l…
Recent developments concerning localized-magnon eigenstates in strongly frustrated spin lattices and their effect on the low-temperature physics of these systems in high magnetic fields are reviewed. After illustrating the construction and the properties of localized-magnon states we describe the plateau and the jump in the magnetization process caused by these states. Considering appropriate lattice deformations fitting to the localized magnons we discuss a spin-Peierls instability in high magnetic fields related to these states. Last but not least we consider the degeneracy of the localized-…
$^7$Li and $^{29}$Si NMR, $μ$SR and magnetization measurements in Li$_2$V$_{1-x}$OTi$_x$SiO$_4$, for $0 \leq x \leq 0.2$, are presented. The $x=0$ compound is a prototype of frustrated two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square-lattice with competing nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbour exchange interactions. Ti$^{4+}$ (S=0) for V$^{4+}$ (S=1/2) substitution yields the spin dilution of the antiferromagnetic layers. The analysis of the magnetization and of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate shows that spin dilution not only reduces the spin-stiffness by a factor …
We present a new scenario for the breakdown of ferromagnetic order in a two-dimensional quantum magnet with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. In this, dynamical effects lead to the formation of two-magnon bound states, which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, giving rise to bond-centered nematic order. This scenario is explored in some detail for an extended Heisenberg model on a square lattice. In particular, we present numerical evidence confirming the existence of a state with d-wave nematic correlations but no long range magnetic order, lying between the saturate…
Zero and longitudinal field $μ$SR measurements in Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ and BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$, two prototypes of the frustrated $S=1/2$ square lattice model with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, are presented. Both systems are observed to undergo a phase transition to a long-range magnetic order at $T_N\simeq 3.46$ K, for Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$, and at $T_N\simeq 0.99$ K, for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. In Pb$_2$VO(PO$_4$)$_2$ both the temperature dependence of the order parameter and the longitudinal relaxation rate above $T_N$ are consistent with a two-dimensional XY model. …
The two-dimensional frustrated next nearest neighbor Heisenberg model on the square lattice is a prime example for a spin system where quantum fluctuations can either destroy or stabilize magnetic order. The phase boundaries and staggered moment dependence on the frustration ratio J_2/J_1 of the exchange constants are fairly well understood both from approximate analytical and numerical methods. In this work we use exact diagonalization for finite clusters for an extensive investigation of the more general J_1a,b-J_2 model which includes a spatial exchange anisotropy between next-neighbor spin…

A large part of the interest in magnets with frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions comes from the many new phases found in applied magnetic field. In this Article, we explore some of the new phases which arise in a model with frustrated ferromagnetic interactions, the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. Using a combination of classical Monte-Carlo simulation and spin-wave theory, we uncover behaviour reminiscent of some widely-studied frustrated antiferromagnets, but with a number of new twists. We first demonstrate that, for a suitable choice of parameters, the phase diagr…
We study the S=1 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spatially anisotropic nearest neighbor couplings $J_{1x}$, $J_{1y}$ frustrated by a next-nearest neighbor coupling $J_{2}$ numerically using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and analytically employing the Schwinger-Boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). Up to relatively strong values of the anisotropy, within both methods we find quantum fluctuations to stabilize the Néel ordered state above the classically stable region. Whereas SBMFT suggests a fluctuation-induced first order transition between the Néel state and…
Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-di…
The magnetocaloric effect in a two-dimensional Ising model is considered for different ratios between parameters of inter-site repulsion of nonmagnetic impurities and exchange coupling. Classical Monte Carlo simulations on a square lattice show that in case of weak coupling and at sufficiently high concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities the long-range ferromagnetic ordering breaks down to give isolated spin clusters in the ground state of the system. This leads to appearance of a paramagnetic response in the system at the zero temperature and nonzero entropy of the ground state. The feasibil…
Frustration in quantum spin systems promote a variety of novel quantum phases. An important example is the frustrated spin-$1$ model on the square lattice with the nearest-neighbor bilinear ($J_1$) and biquadratic ($K_1$) interactions. We provide strong evidence for a nematic spin liquid phase in a range of $K_1/J_1$ near the SU(3)-symmetric point ($J_1 = K_1$), based on the linear flavor-wave theory and extensive density matrix renormalization group calculation. This phase displays no spin dipolar or quadrupolar order, preserves translational symmetry but spontaneously breaks $C_4$ lattice ro…
We employ a variational Monte Carlo approach to efficiently obtain the dynamical structure factor for the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. Upon increasing the frustrating ratio $J_2/J_1$, the ground state undergoes a continuous transition from a Néel antiferromagnet to a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gapless spin liquid. We identify the characteristic spectral features in both phases and highlight the existence of a broad continuum of excitations in the proximity of the spin-liquid phase. The magnon branch, which dominates the spectrum of the unfrustrated Heisenberg model, gradual…
