By a modification of the method that was applied in (Korolev and Shevtsova, 2010), here the inequalities $Δ_n\leq0.3328(β_3+0.429)/\sqrt{n}$ and $Δ_n\leq0.33554(β_3+0.415)/\sqrt{n}$ are proved for the uniform distance $Δ_n$ between the standard normal distribution function and the distribution function of the normalized sum of an arbitrary number $n\geq1$ of independent identically distributed random variables with zero mean, unit variance and finite third absolute moment $β_3$. The first of these two inequalities improves one that was proved in (Korolev and Shevtsova, 2010), and as well sharpens the best known upper estimate for the absolute constant $C_0$ in the classical Berry--Esseen inequality to be $C_0<0.4756$, since $0.3328(β_3+0.429)\leq0.3328\cdot1.429β_3<0.4756β_3$ by virtue of the condition $β_3\geq1$. The second of these inequalities is also a structural improvement of the classical Berry--Esseen inequality, and as well sharpens the upper estimate for $C_0$ still more to be $C_0<0.4748$.
Under correlation-type conditions, we derive upper bounds of order $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}$ for the Kolmogorov distance between the distributions of weighted sums of dependent summands and the normal law.
We analyze the quality of the gaussian approximation to linear combinations of n independent, identically-distributed random variables with finite fourth moments. It turns out that there exist universal, simple linear combinations that perform better than the sum of the variables. We also investigate the case in which the random variables are independent, yet they are not necessarily identically distributed.
\noindent We study the asymptotic behavior of a sum of independent and identically distributed random variables conditioned by a sum of independent and identically distributed integer-valued random variables. We prove a Berry-Esseen bound in a general setting and a large deviation result when the Laplace transform of the underlying distribution is not defined in a neighborhood of zero. Then we present several combinatorial applications. In particular, we prove a large deviation result for the model of hashing with linear probing.
As an extension of a central limit theorem established by Svante Janson, we prove a Berry-Esseen inequality for a sum of independent and identically distributed random variables conditioned by a sum of independent and identically distributed integer-valued random variables.
We prove abstract bounds on the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances between non-randomly centered random sums of real i.i.d. random variables with a finite third moment and the standard normal distribution. Except for the case of mean zero summands, these bounds involve a coupling of the summation index with its size biased distribution as was previously considered in \cite{GolRin96} for the normal approximation of nonnegative random variables. When being specialized to concrete distributions of the summation index like the Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distribution, our bounds turn ou…
We provide a Lyapunov type bound in the multivariate central limit theorem for sums of independent, but not necessarily identically distributed random vectors. The error in the normal approximation is estimated for certain classes of sets, which include the class of measurable convex sets. The error bound is stated with explicit constants. The result is proved by means of Stein's method. In addition, we improve the constant in the bound of the Gaussian perimeter of convex sets.
Let $(g_{n})_{n\geq 1}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed positive random $d\times d$ matrices and consider the matrix product $G_n: = g_n \ldots g_1$. Under suitable conditions, we establish the Berry-Esseen bounds on the rate of convergence in the central limit theorem and moderate deviation expansions of Cramér type, for the matrix norm $\| G_n \|$ of $G_n$, for its $(i,j)$-th entry $G_n^{i,j}$, and the and for its spectral radius $ρ(G_n)$.
Bolthausen used a variation of Stein's method to give an inductive proof of the Berry-Esseen theorem for sums of independent, identically distributed random variables. We modify this technique to prove a Berry-Esseen theorem for character ratios of a random representation of the symmetric group on transpositions. An analogous result is proved for Jack measure on partitions.
It is shown that the absolute constant in the Berry--Esseen inequality for i.i.d. Bernoulli random variables is strictly less than the Esseen constant, if $1\le n\le 500000$, where $n$ is a number of summands. This result is got both with the help of a supercomputer and an interpolation theorem, which is proved in the paper as well. In addition, applying the method developed by S. Nagaev and V. Chebotarev in 2009--2011, an upper bound is obtained for the absolute constant in the Berry--Esseen inequality in the case under consideration, which differs from the Esseen constant by no more than 0.0…
Let $\{Z_n, n\geq 0\}$ be a supercritical branching process in an independent and identically distributed random environment. We prove Cramér moderate deviations and Berry-Esseen bounds for $\ln (Z_{n+n_0}/Z_{n_0})$ % under the annealed law, uniformly in $n_0 \in \mathbb{N}$, which extend the corresponding results by Grama et al. (Stochastic Process.\ Appl. 2017) established for $n_0=0$. The extension is interesting in theory, and is motivated by applications. A new method is developed for the proofs; some conditions of Grama et al. (2017) are relaxed in our present setting. An example of appl…
This article presents a new proof of the rate of convergence to the normal distribution of sums of independent, identically distributed random variables in chi-square distance, which was also recently studied in \cite{BobkovRenyi}. Our method consists of taking advantage of the underlying time non-homogeneous Markovian structure and studying the spectral properties of the non-reversible transition operator, which allows to find the optimal rate in the convergence above under matching moments assumptions. Our main assumption is that the random variables involved in the sum are independent and h…
We present a formalization of the well-known thesis that, in the case of independent identically distributed random variables $X_1,\dots,X_n$ with power-like tails of index $α\in(0,2)$, large deviations of the sum $X_1+\dots+X_n$ are primarily due to just one of the summands.
By a modification of the method that was applied in (Korolev and Shevtsova, 2009), here the inequalities $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le\frac{0.335789(β^3+0.425)}{\sqrt{n}}$$ and $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le \frac{0.3051(β^3+1)}{\sqrt{n}} $$ are proved for the uniform distance $ρ(F_n,Φ)$ between the standard normal distribution function $Φ$ and the distribution function $F_n$ of the normalized sum of an arbitrary number $n\ge1$ of independent identically distributed random variables with zero mean, unit variance and finite third absolute moment $β^3$. The first of these inequalities sharpens the best known version of the clas…
Let $T_1,...,T_n$ denote free random variables. For two linear forms $L_1=\sum_{j=1}^n a_jT_j$ and $L_2=\sum_{j=1}^n b_jT_j$ with real coefficients $a_j$ and $b_j$ we shall describe all distributions of $T_1,...,T_n$ such that $L_1$ and $L_2$ are free. For identically distributed free random variables $T_1,...,T_n$ with distribution $μ$ we establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the coefficients $a_j,b_j,\,j=1,...,n,$ such that the statements:\quad $(i)$ $μ$ is a centered semicircular distribution; and $(ii)$ \, $L_1$ and $L_2$ are identically distributed ($L_1\stackrel{D}{=}L_2$); ar…

We suggest approximating the distribution of the sum of independent and identically distributed random variables with a Pareto-like tail by combining extreme value approximations for the largest summands with a normal approximation for the sum of the smaller summands. If the tail is well approximated by a Pareto density, then this new approximation has substantially smaller error rates compared to the usual normal approximation for underlying distributions with finite variance and less than three moments. It can also provide an accurate approximation for some infinite variance distributions.
The validity of the strong law of large numbers for multiple sums $S_n$ of independent identically distributed random variables $Z_k$, $k\leq n$, with $r$-dimensional indices is equivalent to the integrability of $|Z|(\log^+|Z|)^{r-1}$, where $Z$ is the typical summand. We consider the strong law of large numbers for more general normalisations, without assuming that the summands $Z_k$ are identically distributed, and prove a multiple sum generalisation of the Brunk--Prohorov strong law of large numbers. In the case of identical finite moments of irder $2q$ with integer $q\geq1$, we show that …
Following (Shevtsova, 2010) we introduce detailed classification of the asymptotically exact constants in natural estimates of the rate of convergence in the Lindeberg central limit theorem, namely in Esseen's, Rozovskii's, and Wang-Ahmad's inequalities and their structural improvements obtained in our previous works. The above inequalities involve algebraic truncated third-order moments and the classical Lindeberg fraction and assume finiteness only the second-order moments of random summands. We present lower bounds for the introduced asymptotically exact constants as well as for the univers…
Linear wavelet density estimators are wavelet projections of the empirical measure based on independent, identically distributed observations. We study here the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) and a Berry-Esseen type theorem. These results are proved under different assumptions on the density $f$ that are different from those needed for similar results in the case of convolution kernels (KDE): whereas the smoothness requirements are much less stringent than for the KDE, Riemann integrability assumptions are needed in order to compute the asymptotic variance, which gives the scaling constan…
We study the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between the empirical distribution and the marginal distribution of stationary $α$-dependent sequences. We prove some moments inequalities of order p for any p $\ge$ 1, and we give some conditions under which the central limit theorem holds. We apply our results to unbounded functions of expanding maps of the interval with a neutral fixed point at zero. The moment inequalities for the Wasserstein distance are similar to the well known von Bahr-Esseen or Rosenthal bounds for partial sums, and seem to be new even in the case of independent and identic…
The concept of a Lévy subordinator is generalized to a family of non-decreasing stochastic processes, which are parameterized in terms of two Bernstein functions. Whereas the independent increments property is only maintained in the Lévy subordinator special case, the considered family is always strongly infinitely divisible with respect to time, meaning that a path can be represented in distribution as a finite sum with arbitrarily many summands of independent and identically distributed paths of another process. Besides distributional properties of the process, we present two applications to…
