Let F_n be the free group of rank n, with generating set S=\{x_1,...,x_n\}. An automorphism ϕof F_n is called symmetric if for each 1\leq i\leq n, ϕ(x_i) is conjugate to x_j or x_j^{-1} for some 1\leq j\leq n. Let ΣAut(F_n) be the group of symmetric automorphisms. We prove that the inclusion ΣAut(F_n) \rightarrow ΣAut(F_{n+1}) induces an isomorphism in rational homology for n>(3i-1)/2.
We prove twisted homological stability with polynomial coefficients for automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups of any given class. These groups interpolate between two extremes for which homological stability was known before, the general linear groups over the integers and the automorphism groups of free groups. The proof presented here uses a general result that applies to arbitrary extensions of groups, and that has other applications as well.
Let F_{n+m} be the free group of rank n+m, with generators x_1,...,x_{n+m}. An automorphism ϕof F_{n+m} is called partially symmetric if for each 1 \le i \le m, ϕ(x_i) is conjugate to x_j or x_j^{-1} for some 1 \le j \le m. Let Σ\Aut_n^m be the group of partially symmetric automorphisms. We prove that for any m \ge 0 the inclusion Σ\Aut_n^m \to Σ\Aut_{n+1}^m induces an isomorphism in rational homology for dimensions i satisfying n \ge (3(i+1)+m)/2, with a similar statement for the groups PΣ\Aut_n^m of pure partially symmetric automorphisms. We also prove that for any n \ge 0 the inclusion Σ\Au…
We examine the Johnson filtration of the (outer) automorphism group of a finitely generated group. In the case of a free group, we find a surprising result: the first Betti number of the second subgroup in the Johnson filtration is finite. Moreover, the corresponding Alexander invariant is a non-trivial module over the Laurent polynomial ring. In the process, we show that the first resonance variety of the outer Torelli group of a free group is trivial. We also establish a general relationship between the Alexander invariant and its infinitesimal counterpart.
We show that if the fundamental group of the complement of a rationally homologically fibered knot in a rational homology 3-sphere is bi-orderable, then its Alexander polynomial has at least one positive real root. Our argument can be applied for a finitely generated group which is an HNN extension with certain properties.
For a classical group $G$ of type $\mathsf D_n$ over a field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$, we show the existence of a finitely generated regular extension $R$ of $k$ such that $G$ admits outer automorphisms over $R$. Using this result and a construction of groups of type $\mathsf A$ from groups of type $\mathsf D$, we construct new examples of groups of type $^2\mathsf A_n$ with $n\equiv 3\bmod 4$ and the first examples of type $^2\mathsf A_n$ with $n\equiv 1\bmod 4$ $(n\geq 5)$ that are not $R$-trivial, hence not rational (nor stably rational).
We prove that the Reidemeister zeta functions of automorphisms of crystallographic groups with diagonal holonomy $\mathbb{Z}_2$ are rational. As a result, we obtain that Reidemeister zeta functions of automorphisms of almost-crystallographic groups up to dimension 3 are rational.
Let $Γ$ be either the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $\geq 2$, or the automorphism group of a free group of rank $\geq 3$. Given any homological representation $ρ$ of $Γ$ corresponding to a finite cover, and any term $\mathcal{I}_k$ of the Johnson filtration, we show that $ρ(\mathcal{I}_k)$ has finite index in $ρ(\mathcal{I})$, the Torelli subgroup of $Γ$. Since $[\mathcal{I}: \mathcal{I}_k] = \infty$ for $k > 1$, this implies for instance that no such representation is faithful.
We study endomorphisms of a free group of finite rank by means of their action on specific sets of elements. In particular, we prove that every endomorphism of the free group of rank 2 which preserves an automorphic orbit (i.e., acts ``like an automorphism" on one particular orbit), is itself an automorphism. Then, we consider elements of a different nature, defined by means of homological properties of the corresponding one-relator group. These elements (``generalized primitive elements"), interesting in their own right, can also be used for distinguishing automorphisms among arbitrary endomo…
Given a free group $F_n$, a fully irreducible automorphism $f \in \aut$, and a generic element $x \in F_n$, the elements $f^k(x)$ converge in the appropriate sense to an object called an attracting lamination of $f$. When the action of $f$ on $\frac{F_n}{[F_n, F_n]}$ has finite order, we introduce a homological version of this convergence, in which the attracting object is a convex polytope with rational vertices, together with a measure supported at a point with algebraic coordinates.
In this note, we prove that if every character of a finite group $G$ fixed by an order-2 Galois automorphism has odd degree, then $G$ has a normal Sylow $2$-subgroup. On the way, we study extensions of characters of $GL_n(q)$, $q$ odd, to the group extended by the transpose-inverse automorphism and prove that unipotent characters of $PSL_n(q)$ extend to rational characters of its automorphism group.
An n-dimensional quantum torus is a twisted group algebra of the group $\Z^n$. It is called rational if all invertible commutators are roots of unity. In the present note we describe a normal form for rational n-dimensional quantum tori over any field. Moreover, we show that for $n = 2$ the natural exact sequence describing the automorphism group of the quantum torus splits over any field.
We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We also outline the classification of non-rational surfaces with large automorphism groups.
We compute the homology groups $H_*(\operatorname{Out}(F_7);\mathbb Q)$ of the outer automorphism group of the free group of rank $7$. We produce in this manner the first rational homology classes of $\operatorname{Out}(F_n)$ that are neither constant ($*=0$) nor Morita classes ($*=2n-4$).
We investigate the structure of the monoid of endomorphisms of the ordered set $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ of rational numbers. We show that for any countable linearly ordered set $Ω$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of $\operatorname{End}(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Ω$. We characterise those subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ that arise as a retract in $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ in terms of topological information concerning $X$. Finally, we establish that a countable group arises as the automorphism group of a countable linearly ordered set, and hence as a maximal…
It is not known whether or not the stable rational cohomology groups $\tilde H^*(Aut(F_\infty);\Q)$ always vanish. We show that either the rational cohomology does not vanish in certain dimensions, or the integral cohomology of a moduli space of pointed graphs does not stabilize in certain other dimensions. Similar results are stated for groups of outer automorphisms. This yields that $H^5(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, $H^6(\hat Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$, and $H^5(Q_m; \mathbb{Z})$ never stabilize as $m \to \infty$, where the moduli spaces $\hat Q_m$ and $Q_m$ are the quotients of the spines $\hat X_m$ and …
We study the word length entropy of automorphisms of residually nilpotent groups, and how the entropy of such group automorphisms relates to the entropy of induced automorphisms on various nilpotent quotients. We show that much like the structure of a nilpotent group is dictated to a large degree by its abelianization, the entropy of an automorphism of a nilpotent group is dictated by its entropy on the abelianization. We give some applications to the study of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of surfaces. In particular, we show that if $ψ$ is a non--homological pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a sur…
We improve a result of Prokhorov and Shramov on the rank of finite $p$-subgroups of the birational automorphism group of a rationally connected variety. Known examples show that they are sharp in many cases.
In 1993, Muzychuk \cite{muzychuk} showed that the rational Schur rings over a cyclic group $Z_n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with sublattices of the divisor lattice of $n$, or equivalently, with sublattices of the lattice of subgroups of $Z_n$. This can easily be extended to show that for any finite group $G$, sublattices of the lattice of characteristic subgroups of $G$ give rise to rational Schur rings over $G$ in a natural way. Our main result is that any finite group may be represented as the (algebraic) automorphism group of such a rational Schur ring over an abelian $p$-group, for a…
We compute the rational stable homology of the automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. These groups interpolate between the general linear groups over the ring of integers and the automorphism groups of free groups, and we employ functor homology to reduce to the abelian case. As an application, we also compute the rational stable homology of the outer automorphism groups and of the mapping class groups of the associated aspherical nil-manifolds in the TOP, PL, and DIFF categories.
We prove that the automorphism group of the Urysohn diversity is a universal Polish group. Furthermore we show that the automorphism group of the rational Urysohn diversity has ample generics, a dense conjugacy class and that it embeds densely into the automorphism group of the (full) Urysohn diversity. It follows that this latter group also has a dense conjugacy class.
