We classify invariant complex structures on 6-dimensional nilmanifolds up to equivalence. As an application, the behaviour of the associated Frölicher sequence is studied as well as its relation to the existence of strongly Gauduchon metrics. We also show that the strongly Gauduchon property and the balanced property are not closed under holomorphic deformation.
Let (J,g) be a Hermitian structure on a compact nilmanifold M with invariant complex structure J and compatible metric g, which is not required to be invariant. We give classifications of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds M admitting strong Kähler with torsion, balanced or locally conformal Kähler structures (J,g).
The fundamental 2-form of an invariant almost Hermitian structure on a 6-dimensional Lie group is described in terms of an action by SO(4)xU(1) on complex projective 3-space. This leads to a combinatorial description of the classes of almost Hermitian structures on the Iwasawa and other nilmanifolds.
The invariant balanced Hermitian geometry of nilmanifolds of dimension 6 is described. We prove that the holonomy group of the associated Bismut connection reduces to a proper subgroup of SU(3) if and only if the complex structure is abelian. As an application we show that if J is abelian then any invariant balanced J-Hermitian structure provides solutions of the Strominger system.
The Bott-Chern cohomology of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with invariant complex structure is studied with special attention to the cases when balanced or strongly Gauduchon Hermitian metrics exist. We consider complex invariants introduced by Angella and Tomassini and by Schweitzer, which are related to the $\partial \bar\partial$-lemma condition and defined in terms of the Bott-Chern cohomology, and show that the vanishing of some of these invariants is not a closed property under holomorphic deformations. In the balanced case, we determine the spaces that parametrize deformations in t…
We find a one-parameter family of non-isomorphic nilpotent Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}_a$, with $a \in [0,\infty)$, of real dimension eight with (strongly non-nilpotent) complex structures. By restricting $a$ to take rational values, we arrive at the existence of infinitely many real homotopy types of $8$-dimensional nilmanifolds admitting a complex structure. Moreover, balanced Hermitian metrics and generalized Gauduchon metrics on such nilmanifolds are constructed.
On a complex manifold an Hermitian metric which is simultaneously SKT and balanced has to be necessarily Kähler. It has been conjectured that if a compact complex manifold (M,J) has an SKT metric and a balanced metric both compatible with J, then (M, J) is necessarily Kähler. We show that the conjecture is true for nilmanifolds.
We use Bott-Chern cohomology to measure the non-Kählerianity of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with the invariant complex structures in M. Ceballos, A. Otal, L. Ugarte, and R. Villacampa's classification, [Invariant Complex Structures on 6-Nilmanifolds: Classification, Frölicher Spectral Sequence and Special Hermitian Metrics, J. Geom. Anal. (2014)]. We investigate the existence of pluriclosed metric in connection with such a classification.
In this note, we analyze the question of when will a complex nilmanifold have Kähler-like Strominger (also known as Bismut), Chern, or Riemannian connection, in the sense that the curvature of the connection obeys all the symmetries of that of a Kähler metric. We give a classification in the first two cases and a partial description in the third case. It would be interesting to understand these questions for all Lie-Hermitian manifolds, namely, Lie groups equipped with a left invariant complex structure and a compatible left invariant metric.
We study the Anomaly flow on $2$-step nilmanifolds with respect to any Hermitian connection in the Gauduchon line. In the case of flat holomorphic bundle, the general solution to the Anomaly flow is given for any initial invariant Hermitian metric. The solutions depend on two constants $K_1$ and $K_2$, and we study the qualitative behaviour of the Anomaly flow in terms of their signs, as well as the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The sign of $K_1$ is related to the conformal invariant introduced by Fu, Wang and Wu. In the non-flat case, we find the general evolution equations of the…
A well known conjecture in complex geometry states that a compact Hermitian manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature must be Kähler if the constant is non-zero and must be Chern flat if the constant is zero. The conjecture is confirmed in complex dimension $2$, by the work of Balas-Gauduchon in 1985 (when the constant is zero or negative) and by Apostolov-Davidov-Muskarov in 1996 (when the constant is positive). For higher dimensions, the conjecture is still largely unknown. In this article, we restrict ourselves to the class of complex nilmanifolds and confirm the conjecture in …
The characteristic connection of an almost hermitian structure is a hermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. The case of parallel torsion in dimension six is of particular interest. In this work, we give a full classification of the algebraic types of the torsion form, and, based on this, undertake a systematic investigation into the possible geometries. Numerous naturally reductive spaces are constructed and classified as well as examples on nilmanifolds given.
We study the interplay between the following types of special non-Kähler Hermitian metrics on compact complex manifolds: it locally conformally Kähler, $k$-Gauduchon, balanced and locally conformally balanced and prove that a locally conformally Kähler compact nilmanifold carrying a balanced or a $k$-Gauduchon metric is necessarily a torus. Combined with a result of Fino and Vezzoni from 2016, this leads to the fact that a compact complex 2-step nilmanifold endowed with whichever two of the following types of metrics: balanced, pluriclosed and locally conformally Kähler is a torus. Moreover, w…
We study the intrinsic geometrical structure of hypersurfaces in 6-manifolds carrying a balanced Hermitian SU(3)-structure, which we call {\em balanced} SU(2)-{\em structures}. We provide conditions which imply that such a 5-manifold can be isometrically embedded as a hypersurface in a manifold with a balanced SU(3)-structure. We show that any 5-dimensional compact nilmanifold has an invariant balanced SU(2)-structure as well as new examples of balanced Hermitian SU(3)-metrics constructed from balanced SU(2)-structures. Moreover, for $n=3,4$, we present examples of compact manifolds, endowed w…
We review some constructions and properties of complex manifolds admitting pluriclosed and balanced metrics. We prove that for a 6-dimensional solvmanifold endowed with an invariant complex structure J having holomorphically trivial canonical bundle the pluriclosed flow has a long time solution for every invariant initial datum. Moreover, we state a new conjecture about the existence of balanced and SKT metrics on compact complex manifolds. We show that the conjecture is true for nilmanifolds of dimension 6 and 8 and for 6-dimensional solvmanifolds with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle…
The equations for a G_2-structure with torsion on a product M^7 = N^6 x S^1 are studied in relation to the induced SU(3)-structure on N^6. All solutions are found in the case when the Lee-form of the G_2-structure is non-zero and N^6 is a six-dimensional nilmanifold with half-integrable SU(3)-structure. Special properties of the torsion of these solutions are discussed.
We study a class of Hermitian metrics on complex manifolds, recently introduced by J. Fu, Z. Wang and D. Wu, which are a generalization of Gauduchon metrics. This class includes the one of Hermitian metrics for which the associated fundamental 2-form is $\partial \bar\partial$-closed. Examples are given on nilmanifolds, on products of Sasakian manifolds, on $S^1$-bundles and via the twist construction introduced by A. Swann.
This is partly an expository paper, where the authors' work on pseudoriemannian Einstein metrics on nilpotent Lie groups is reviewed. A new criterion is given for the existence of a diagonal Einstein metric on a nice nilpotent Lie group. Classifications of special classes of Ricci-flat metrics on nilpotent Lie groups of dimension $\leq8$ are obtained. Some related open questions are presented.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact hermitian manifold of dimension $n$. We study the asymptotic behavior of Monge-Ampère volumes $\int_X (ω+dd^c φ)^n$, when $ω+dd^c φ$ varies in the set of hermitian forms that are $dd^c$-cohomologous to $ω$. We show that these Monge-Ampère volumes are uniformly bounded if $ω$ is "strongly pluripositive", and that they are uniformly positive if $ω$ is "strongly plurinegative". This motivates the study of the existence of such plurisigned hermitian metrics. We analyze several classes of examples (complex parallelisable manifolds, twistor spaces, Vaisman manifolds) admitti…
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold of complex dimension $n$ is called {\em astheno-Kähler} if its fundamental $2$-form $F$ satisfies the condition $\partial \overline \partial F^{n - 2} =0$. If $n =3$, then the metric is {\em strong KT}, i.e. $F$ is $\partial \overline \partial$-closed. By using blow-ups and the twist construction, we construct simply-connected astheno-Kähler manifolds of complex dimension $n > 3$. Moreover, we construct a family of astheno-Kähler (non strong KT) $2$-step nilmanifolds of complex dimension $4$ and we study deformations of strong KT structures on nilmanifo…
Symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact manifolds are strictly related to Hermitian metrics having the fundamental form $\partial \bar \partial $-closed, i.e. to strong Kähler with torsion (${\rm SKT}$) metrics. It is still an open problem to exhibit a compact example of a complex manifold having a tamed symplectic structure but non-admitting Kähler structures. We show some negative results for the existence of symplectic forms taming complex structures on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. In particular, we prove that if $M$ is a nilmanifold (not a torus) end…
The geodesic orbit property is useful and interesting in Riemannian geometry. It implies homogeneity and has important classes of Riemannian manifolds as special cases. Those classes include weakly symmetric Riemannian manifolds and naturally reductive Riemannian manifolds. The corresponding results for indefinite metric manifolds are much more delicate than in Riemannian signature, but in the last few years important corresponding structural results were proved for geodesic orbit Lorentz manifolds. Here we carry out a major step in the structural analysis of geodesic orbit Lorentz nilmanifold…
We classify nilmanifolds with an invariant symplectic half-flat structure. We solve the half-flat evolution equations in one example, writing down the resulting Ricci-flat metric. We study the geometry of the orbit space of 6-manifolds with an SU(3)-structure preserved by a U(1) action, giving characterizations in the symplectic half-flat and integrable case.
This note summarizes the talk by the author at the workshop "Geometry and Computer Science" held in Pescara in February 2017. We present how SageMath can help in research in Complex and Differential Geometry, with two simple applications, which are not intended to be original. We consider two "classification problems" on quotients of Lie groups, namely, "computing cohomological invariants" [D. Angella, M. G. Franzini, F. A. Rossi, Degree of non-Kählerianity for 6-dimensional nilmanifolds, Manuscripta Math. 148 (2015), no. 1-2, 177--211], [A. Latorre, L. Ugarte, R. Villacampa, On the Bott-Chern…
We consider a generalization of Calabi-Yau structures in the context of $α$-Sasakian manifolds. We study deformations of a special class of Legendrian submanifolds and classify invariant contact Calabi-Yau structures on 5-dimensional nilmanifolds. Finally we generalize to codimension $r$.
This paper classifies Hermitian structures on 6-dimensional nilmanifolds M=G/L for which the fundamental 2-form is d d-bar closed, a condition that is shown to depend only on the underlying complex structure J of M. The space of such J is described when G is the complex Heisenberg group, and explicit solutions are obtained from a limacon-shaped curve in the complex plane. Related theory provides examples of various types of Ricci-flat structures.
We study the curvature of almost Hermitian manifolds and their special analogues via intrinsic torsion and representation theory. By deriving different forumlae for the skew-symmetric part of the star-Ricci curvature, we find that some of these contributions are dependent on the approach used, and for the almost Hermitian case we obtain tables that differ from those of Falcitelli, Farinola and Salamon. We show how the exterior algebra may used to explain some of these variations.
We consider non-Kaehler compact complex manifolds which are homogeneous under the action of a compact Lie group of biholomorphisms and we investigate the existence of special (invariant) Hermitian metrics on these spaces. We focus on a particular class of such manifolds comprising the case of Calabi-Eckmann manifolds and we prove the existence of an invariant Hermitian metric which is Chern-Einstein, namely whose second Ricci tensor of the associated Chern connection is a positive multiple of the metric itself. The uniqueness is also discussed.
There are five six-dimensional nilpotent Lie groups G, which do not admit neither symplectic, nor complex structures and, therefore, can be neither almost pseudo-Kahler, nor almost Hermitian. In this work, these Lie groups are being studied. The aim of the paper is to define new left-invariant geometric structures on the Lie groups under consideration that compensate, in some sense, the absence of symplectic and complex structures. New examples of multiparametric families of metrics of signature (3,3) and almost para-complex pseudo-Riemannian half-flat structures on six-dimensional nilmanifold…
We study invariant solutions to the Positive Hermitian Curvature Flow, introduced by Ustinovskiy, on complex Lie groups. We show in particular that the canonical scale-static metrics on the special linear groups, arising from the Killing form, are dynamically unstable. This disproves a conjecture of Ustinovskiy. We also construct certain perfect Lie groups that admit at least two distinct invariant solitons for the flow, only one of which is algebraic. This is the second known example of a geometric flow with non-algebraic, homogeneous solitons. The first being the G2-Laplacian flow.
A Hermitian metric on a complex manifold is called strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) if its fundamental 2-form $ω$ is $\partial \bar \partial$-closed. We review some properties of strong KT metrics also in relation with symplectic forms taming complex structures. Starting from a $2n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ {and using} a Hermitian flat connection on $\mathfrak g$ we construct a $4n$-dimensional SKT Lie algebra. We apply this method to some 4-dimensional SKT Lie algebras. Moreover, we classify symplectic forms taming complex structures on 4-dimensional Lie algebras.
We study the classification of special almost hermitian manifolds in Gray and Hervella's type classes. We prove that the exterior derivatives of the symplectic form and the complex volume form contain all the information about the intrinsic torsion of the $\SUn(n)$-structure. Furthermore, we apply the obtained results to almost hyperhermitian geometry. Thus, we show that the exterior derivatives of the three K{ä}hler forms of an almost hyperhermitian manifold are sufficient to determine the three covariant derivatives of such forms, i.e., the three mentioned exterior derivatives determine the …
From string theory, the notion of deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills connections has been introduced by Mariño, Minasian, Moore and Strominger. After that, Leung, Yau and Zaslow proved that it naturally appears as mirror objects of special Lagrangian submanifolds via Fourier-Mukai transform between dual torus fibrations. In their paper, some conditions are imposed for simplicity. In this paper, data to glue their construction on tropical manifolds are proposed and a generalization of the correspondence is proved without the assumption that the Lagrangian submanifold is a section of the torus fibrat…
We investigate degenerate special-Hermitian metrics on compact complex manifolds, in particular, degenerate Kähler and locally conformally Kähler metrics on special classes of non-Kähler manifolds.
We start by analysing the Lie algebra of Hermitian vector fields of a Hermitian line bundle. Then, we specify the base space of the above bundle by considering a Galilei, or an Einstein spacetime. Namely, in the first case, we consider, a fibred manifold over absolute time equipped with a spacelike Riemannian metric, a spacetime connection (preserving the time fibring and the spacelike metric) and an electromagnetic field. In the second case, we consider a spacetime equipped with a Lorentzian metric and an electromagnetic field. In both cases, we exhibit a natural Lie algebra of special phase …
We investigate the geometry of Hermitian manifolds endowed with a compact Lie group action by holomorphic isometries with principal orbits of codimension one. In particular, we focus on a special class of these manifolds constructed by following Bérard-Bergery which includes, among the others, the holomorphic line bundles on $\mathbb C\mathbb P^{m-1}$, the linear Hopf manifolds and the Hirzebruch surfaces. We characterize their invariant special Hermitian metrics, such as balanced, Kähler-like, pluriclosed, locally conformally Kähler, Vaisman, Gauduchon. Furthermore, we construct new examples …
We exhibit a transformation taking special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau together with local systems to vector bundles over the mirror manifold with connections obeying deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equations. That is, the transformation relates supersymmetric A- and B-cycles. In this paper, we assume that the mirror pair are dual torus fibrations with flat tori and that the A-cycle is a section. We also show that this transformation preserves the (holomorphic) Chern-Simons functional for all connections. Furthermore, on corresponding moduli spaces of supersymmetric cycles it identif…
Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT) manifolds are higher dimensional analogues of Inoue-Bombieri surfaces and their construction is associated to a finite extension $K$ of $Q$ and a subgroup of units $U$. We characterize the existence of pluriclosed metrics (also known as strongly K\" ahler with torsion (SKT) metrics) on any OT manifold $X(K, U)$ purely in terms of number-theoretical conditions, yielding restrictions on the third Betti number $b_3$ and the Dolbeault cohomology group $H^{2,1}_{\overline{\partial}}$. Combined with the main result in [D20], these numerical conditions render explicit examples of…
We study a special type of almost complex structures, called pure and full and introduced by T.J. Li and W. Zhang, in relation to symplectic structures and Hard Lefschetz condition. We provide sufficient conditions to the existence of the above type of almost complex structures on compact quotients of Lie groups by discrete subgroups. We obtain families of pure and full almost complex structures on compact nilmanifolds and solvmanifolds. Some of these families are parametrized by real 2-forms which are anti-invariant with respect to the almost complex structures.
The holomorphic torsion of a compact locally symmetric manifold is expressed as a special value of a zeta function built out of geometric data (closed geodesics) of the manifold.
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metrics are considered. A linear connection $D$ is introduced such that the structure of these manifolds is parallel with respect to D. Of special interest is the class of the locally conformally equivalent manifolds of the manifolds with covariantly constant almost complex structures and the case when the torsion of D is D-parallel. Curvature properties of these manifolds are studied. An example of 4-dimensional manifolds in the considered basic class is constructed and characterized.
We study a pair (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S}) of irreducible Hermitian Symmetric Spaces of compact type (cHSS) in this paper, with the first aim being classifying all the admissible pairs (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S})). This notion is a natural generalization of the pairs of sub-diagram type originated by Jaehyun Hong and Ngaiming Mok ([HoM 10]). Based on this classification, we partially solve the rigidity problem for the admissible pairs (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S}) which was raised by Mok and Zhang (2014) ([MoZ 14]), culminating in determining a sufficient condition for the pairs being non-rigid…
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and Norden metrics and more specially the corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifolds are considered. Some necessary and sufficient conditions the investigated manifolds be isotropic hyper-Kaehlerian and flat are found. It is proved that the quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with the considered metric structure are Einstein for dimension at least 8. The class of the non-hyper-Kaehler quaternionic Kaehler manifold of the considered type is determined.
In this article we focus on multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics introduced by Mabuchi which include Kähler-Einstein metrics, Kähler-Ricci solitons and Mabuchi solitons as special cases. We also focus on KSM-manifolds, which are introduced by the first author as toric bundles, to establish a criterion for the existence of multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics in terms of KSM-data. An explicit example for a KSM-manifold admitting a family of multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics is constructed by using a continuous path connecting a Kähler-Ricci soliton and a Mabuchi soliton.
In the theory of so called "Covariant Quantum Mechanics" a basic role is played by Hermitian vector fields on a complex line bundle in the frameworks of Galilei and Einstein spacetimes. In fact, it has been proved that the Lie algebra of Hermitian vector fields is naturally isomorphic to a Lie algebra of "special functions" of the phase space. Indeed, this is the source of the covariant quantisation of the above special functions. In the original version of the theory, this result was formulated and proved in a rather involved way; now, we have achieved a more direct and simple approach to the…
