Toroidal orbifolds and their resolutions are described within the framework of (2,2) Gauged Linear Sigma Models (GLSMs). Our procedure describes two-tori as hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces. The description is chosen such that the orbifold singularities correspond to the zeros of their homogeneous coordinates. The individual orbifold singularities are resolved using a GLSM guise of non-compact toric resolutions, i.e. replacing discrete orbifold actions by Abelian worldsheet gaugings. Given that we employ the same global coordinates for both the toroidal orbifold and its resolutions, our GLSM formalism confirms the gluing procedure on the level of divisors discussed by Lust et al. Using our global GLSM description we can study the moduli space of such toroidal orbifolds as a whole. In particular, changes in topology can be described as phase transitions of the underlying GLSM. Finally, we argue that certain partially resolvable GLSMs, in which a certain number of fixed points can never be resolved, might be useful for the study of mini-landscape orbifold MSSMs.
We study some aspects of Gauged Linear Sigma Models corresponding to orbifold singularities of the form $\BC^r/Γ$, for $r=2,3$ and $Γ= \BZ_n$ and $\BZ_n\times \BZ_m$. These orbifolds might be tachyonic in general. We compute expressions for the multi parameter sigma model Lagrangians for these orbifolds, in terms of their toric geometry data. Using this, we analyze some aspects of the phases of generic orbifolds of $\BC^r$.
We discuss the resolution of toroidal orbifolds. For the resulting smooth Calabi-Yau manifolds, we calculate the intersection ring and determine the divisor topologies. In a next step, the orientifold quotients are constructed.
We have studied the most general N=2 supergravity in five dimensions in context with the orbifold theory based on $M_4 \times S^1/Z_2$. Various ways to treat the supersymmetry with singular sources placed in orbifold fixed points were proposed in past. Supersymmetric branes were consistently introduced in a bulk where a gauged supergravity was present. In this paper we find that in the $N=2,D=5$ supergravity with general gauging, the possibility to obtain a supersymmetric brane world is constrained. Imposing the compatibility of supersymmetry transformation rules with the orbifold condition, w…
Closed bosonic string theory on toroidal orbifolds is studied in a Lagrangian path integral formulation. It is shown that a level one twisted WZW action whose field value is restricted to Cartan subgroups of simply-laced Lie groups on a Riemann surface is a natural and nontrivial extension of a first quantized action of string theory on orbifolds with an antisymmetric background field.
We summarize the structure of N=2 multi-instanton and string loop corrections to the Kähler potential and the gauge kinetic function in type I toroidal orbifold models. For that aim, we exploit perturbative calculations of the physical gauge couplings on the heterotic dual, whenever such a perturbative description is available.
We examine orbifolds of the IIB string via gauged supergravity. For the gravity duals of the A_{n-1} quiver gauge theories, we extract the massless degrees of freedom and assemble them into multiplets of N=4 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. We examine the embedding of the gauge group into the isometry group of the scalar manifold, as well as the symmetries of the scalar potential. From this we find that there is a large SU(1,n) symmetry group which relates different RG flows in the dual quiver gauge theory. We find that this symmetry implies an extension of the usual duality between ten…
We discuss a gauged $U(1)_R$ supergravity on five-dimensional (5D) orbifold ($S^1/Z_2$) in which both a $Z_2$-even U(1) gauge field and the $Z_2$-odd graviphoton take part in the $U(1)_R$ gauging. Based on the off-shell formulation of 5D supergravity, we analyze the structure of Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms allowed in such model. Introducing a $Z_2$-even $U(1)_R$ gauge field accompanies new bulk and boundary FI terms in addition to the known integrable boundary FI term which could be present in the absence of any gauged $U(1)_R$ symmetry. Some physical consequences of these new FI terms are exa…
This thesis is concerned with the geometry of toroidal orbifolds and their applications in string theory. By resolving the orbifold singularities via blow-ups, one arrives at a smooth Calabi-Yau manifold. The systematic method to do so is explained in detail. Also the transition to the Orientifold quotient is explained. In the second part of this thesis, applications in string phenomenology are discussed. The applications belong to the framework of compactifications with fluxes in type IIB string theory. The first example belongs to the category of model building, flux-induced soft supersymmet…
We study D-branes extended in T^2/Z_4 using the mirror description as a tensor product of minimal models. We describe branes in the mirror both as boundary states in minimal models and as matrix factorizations in the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg model. We isolate a minimal set of branes and give a geometric interpretation of these as D1-branes constrained to the orbifold fixed points. This picture is supported both by spacetime arguments and by the explicit construction of the boundary states, adapting the known results for rational boundary states in the minimal models. Similar techniques ap…
We investigate the orbifold limits of string theory compactifications with geometric and non-geometric fluxes. Exploiting the connection between internal fluxes and structure constants of the gaugings in the reduced supergravity theory, we can identify the types of fluxes arising in certain classes of freely-acting symmetric and asymmetric orbifolds. We give a general procedure for deriving the gauge algebra of the effective gauged supergravity using the exact CFT description at the orbifold point. We find that the asymmetry is, in general, related to the presence of non-geometric Q- and R- fl…
It was shown by A. Connes, M. Douglas and A. Schwarz that noncommutative tori arise naturally in consideration of toroidal compactifications of M(atrix) theory. A similar analysis of toroidal Z_{2} orbifolds leads to the algebra B_θ that can be defined as a crossed product of noncommutative torus and the group Z_{2}. Our paper is devoted to the study of projective modules over B_θ (Z_{2}-equivariant projective modules over a noncommutative torus). We analyze the Morita equivalence (duality) for B_θ algebras working out the two-dimensional case in detail.
In this work we attempt to bridge the gap between heterotic orbifold models and Calabi-Yau compactifications using gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with (2,0) worldsheet supersymmetry. We associate a specific GLSM to a heterotic orbifold model with twisted states that have non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs): The charges of the GLSM superfields are essentially determined by the shifted momenta of these states. When a twisted state contains an oscillator excitation, a fermionic gauging is introduced on the worldsheet inducing a non-Abelian gauge bundle, e.g. the standard embedding.…
We construct the most general couplings of a bulk seven-dimensional Yang-Mills-Einstein N=2 supergravity with a boundary six-dimensional chiral N=(0,1) theory of vectors and charged hypermultiplets. The boundary consists of two brane worlds sitting at the fixed points of an S^1/Z_2 compactification of the seven-dimensional bulk supergravity. The resulting 6D massless spectrum surviving the orbifold projection is anomalous. By introducing boundary fields at the orbifold fixed points, we show that all anomalies are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. In addition, all couplings of the boundar…
We discuss a gauged $U(1)_R$ supergravity on five-dimensional orbifold ($S^1/Z_2$) in which a $Z_2$-even U(1) gauge field takes part in the $U(1)_R$ gauging, and show the structure of Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms allowed in such model. Some physical consequences of the FI terms are examined.
In this work we study F-theory on symmetric toroidal orbifolds that exhibit roto-translations, which are point group rotations accompanied by fractional lattice shifts. These geometries admit a rich class of effects, such as twisted affine folded fibers, multiple fibers, and up to three distinct torus-fibrations that yield different M/F-theory lifts. We discuss the six-dimensional physics of the F-theory lifts, which generically host superconformal subsectors and a IIB axio-dilaton fixed to strong coupling. In addition we find that these theories exhibit a rich set of p=0,1,2 discrete p-form g…
By employing the symmetries of the underlying conformal field theory, the tree-level Kähler potentials for untwisted moduli of the heterotic string compactifications on orbifolds with continuous Wilson lines are derived. These symmetries act linearly on bosonic (toroidal and $E_8\times E_8$ gauge) string coordinates as well as on the untwisted (toroidal and continuous Wilson lines) moduli; they correspond to the scaling of toroidal moduli, the axionic shift of toroidal moduli and the shift of the continuous Wilson line moduli. In turn such symmetries provide sufficient constraints to determine…
We analyze N=2 (perturbative and non-perturbative) corrections to the effective theory in type I orbifold models where a dual heterotic description is available. These corrections may play an important role in phenomenological scenarios. More precisely, we consider two particular compactifications: the Bianchi-Sagnotti-Gimon-Polchinski orbifold and a freely-acting Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold with N=1 supersymmetry and gauge group SO(q) x SO(32-q). By exploiting perturbative calculations of the physical gauge couplings on the heterotic side, we obtain multi-instanton and one-loop string corrections to t…
Motivated by the smallness of the cosmological constant we investigate whether it is possible to have vanishing one-loop heterotic string partition functions for six-dimensional non-supersymmetric toroidal orbifolds. A straightforward way to realize this presents itself, when each orbifold sector separately preserves some Killing spinors, but none of them survives in all sectors combined. By applying some representation theory to the abstract finite point groups underlying toroidal orbifolds it turns out, that this is never possible. This leads to a nonexistence proof of locally but not global…
We classify orbifolds obtained by taking the quotient of a three tori by abelian extensions of Z/n x Z/n automorphisms, where each torus has a multiplicative Z/n action (n=3,4 or 6). This 'completes' the classification of orbifolds of the above type initiated by Donagi and Faraggi (hep-th/0403272) and, Donagi and Wendland in the cases n=2.
We provide a complete classification of six-dimensional symmetric toroidal orbifolds which yield N>=1 supersymmetry in 4D for the heterotic string. Our strategy is based on a classification of crystallographic space groups in six dimensions. We find in total 520 inequivalent toroidal orbifolds, 162 of them with Abelian point groups such as Z_3, Z_4, Z_6-I etc. and 358 with non-Abelian point groups such as S_3, D_4, A_4 etc. We also briefly explore the properties of some orbifolds with Abelian point groups and N=1, i.e. specify the Hodge numbers and comment on the possible mechanisms (local or …
A maximally supersymmetric configuration of super Yang-Mills living on a noncommutative torus corresponds to a constant curvature connection. On a noncommutative toroidal orbifold there is an additional constraint that the connection be equivariant. We study moduli spaces of (equivariant) constant curvature connections on noncommutative even-dimensional tori and on toroidal orbifolds. As an illustration we work out the cases of Z_{2} and Z_{4} orbifolds in detail. The results we obtain agree with a commutative picture describing systems of branes wrapped on cycles of the torus and branes stuck…
We investigate under which conditions the cosmological constant vanishes perturbatively at the one-loop level for heterotic strings on non-supersymmetric toroidal orbifolds. To obtain model-independent results, which do not rely on the gauge embedding details, we require that the right-moving fermionic partition function vanishes identically in every orbifold sector. This means that each sector preserves at least one, but not always the same Killing spinor. The existence of such Killing spinors is related to the representation theory of finite groups, i.e. of the point group that underlies the…
It has long been known that strings wound around incontractible cycles can play a vital role in cosmology. In particular, in a spacetime with toroidal spatial hypersurfaces, the dynamics of the winding modes may help yield three large spatial dimensions. However, toroidal compactifications are phenomenologically unrealistic. In this paper we therefore take a first step toward extending these cosmological considerations to $D$-dimensional toroidal orbifolds. We use numerical simulation to study the timescales over which "pseudo-wound" strings unwind on these orbifolds with trivial fundamental g…
In this paper I will further investigate the spectrum of quantum gravity or string theories at large number of dimensions. We will see that volumes of certain orbifolds shrink at large D. It follows that the mass spectra of the leading Kaluza-Klein towers and also of wrapped brane states on these orbifolds possess a non-trivial dependence on D: KK modes become heavy at large D, whereas wrapped branes become light. This observation can be used either to apply the Large Dimension Conjecture or, as we will do, to investigate the possibility of a D-duality symmetry, which relates in gravity compac…
We study the modular symmetry on magnetized toroidal orbifolds with Scherk-Schwarz phases. In particular, we investigate finite modular flavor groups for three-generation modes on magnetized orbifolds. The three-generation modes can be the three-dimensional irreducible representations of covering groups and central extended groups of $Γ_N$ for $N=3,4,5,7,8,16$, that is, covering groups of $Δ(6(N/2)^2)$ for $N=$ even and central extensions of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_{N})$ for $N=$odd with Scherk-Schwarz phases. We also study anomaly behaviors.
We extend the promising heterotic string searches for MSSM-like models to Z_8 orbifolds. There exist five inequivalent Z_8 toroidal orbifolds distinguished by two types of twists that act on five different torus lattices; one of which cannot be represented as a Lie-algebra root lattice. Contrary to previous investigations, we study the consequences of the different underlying orbifold torus lattices. Therefore, rather than focussing on one particular geometry, we perform systematic model searches on these five Z_8 orbifolds simultaneously, taking all possible inequivalent SU(5) and SO(10) gaug…
We construct a consistent truncation of six-dimensional matter coupled $F(4)$ gauged supergravity on a cornucopia of two-dimensional surfaces including a spindle, disc, domain wall and other novel backgrounds to four-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. Using our consistent truncation we uplift known AdS$_2\times Σ_1$ solutions giving rise to four-dimensional orbifold solutions, AdS$_2\timesΣ_1\ltimesΣ_2$. We further uplift our solutions to massive type IIA supergravity by constructing the full uplift formulae for six-dimensional U$(1)^2$-gauged supergravity including all fields and arbitr…
We investigate toric GLSMs as models for tachyon condensation in type II strings on space-time non-supersymmetric orbifold singularities. The A-model correlators in these theories satisfy a set of relations related to the topology of the resolved orbifold. Using these relations we compute the correlators and find a non-trivial chiral ring in the IR, which we interpret as supported on isolated Coulomb vacua of the theory.
We study effects of D-brane instantons wrapping rigid cycles on Z2*Z2' toroidal orbifold. We compute Majorana masses induced by rigid D-brane instantons and realize bimaximal mixing matrices in certain models. We can also derive more generic mass matrices in other models. The bimaximal mixing Majorana mass matrix has a possibility to explain observed mixing angles. We also compute the mu-term matrix among more than one pairs of Higgs fields induced by rigid D-brane instantons.
Free fermionic models and symmetric heterotic toroidal orbifolds both constitute exact backgrounds that can be used effectively for phenomenological explorations within string theory. Even though it is widely believed that for Z2xZ2 orbifolds the two descriptions should be equivalent, a detailed dictionary between both formulations is still lacking. This paper aims to fill this gap: We give a detailed account of how the input data of both descriptions can be related to each other. In particular, we show that the generalized GSO phases of the free fermionic model correspond to generalized torsi…
We construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs, that are associated with M5-branes wrapping two different four-dimensional orbifolds. In one case the orbifold is a spindle fibred over another spindle, while in the other it is a spindle fibred over a Riemann surface with genus $g>1$. We show that the central charges of the $d=2$ SCFTs calculated from the gravity solutions agree with field theory computations using anomaly polynomials. The new $D=11$ solutions are obtained after constructing a new consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation …
We study holographic RG flow solutions within four-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity obtained from type IIA and IIB string theories compactified on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold with gauge, geometric and non-geometric fluxes. In type IIB non-geometric compactifications, the resulting gauged supergravity has $ISO(3)\times ISO(3)$ gauge group and admits an $N=4$ $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to an $N=4$ superconformal field theory (SCFT) in three dimensions. We study various supersymmetric RG flows from this $N=4$ SCFT to $N=4$ and $N=1$ non-conformal field theories in the IR. The flo…
We discuss heterotic strings on Z_2 x Z_2 orbifolds of non factorisable six-tori. Although the number of fixed tori is reduced as compared to the factorisable case, Wilson lines are still needed for the construction of three generation models. An essential new feature is the straightforward appearance of three generation models with one generation per twisted sector. We illustrate our general arguments for the occurrence of that property by an explicit example. Our findings give further support for the conjecture that four dimensional heterotic strings formulated at the free fermionic point ar…
We study toroidal orbifold models with topologically invariant terms in the path integral formalism and give physical interpretations of the terms from an operator formalism point of view. We briefly discuss a possibility of a new class of modular invariant orbifold models.
We explicitly analyse $O(α')$ corrections to heterotic supergravity on toroidal orbifolds and their resolutions, which play important roles in string phenomenology as well as moduli stabilisation. Using a conformal factor ansatz that is valid only for four dimensional geometries, we obtain a closed expression for the $O(α')$ metric corrections in the case of several orbifold limits of K3, namely $T^4/\mathbb{Z}_n$ where $n=2,3,4,6$. However, we find that non-standard embedding requires the inclusion of five-branes on such orbifolds. We also numerically investigate the behaviour around orbifold…
We study the $N = 2$ coset models in their formulation as supersymmetric gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models. A model based on the coset $G/H$ is invariant under a symmetry group isomorphic to $\Z_{k+Q}$, where $k$ is the level of the model and $Q$ is the dual Coxeter number of $G$. Using a duality-like relationship, we show that the $\Z_m$ orbifold of the vectorially gauged model and the $\Z_{\tilde{m}}$ orbifold of the axially gauged model are each others mirror partners when $m \tilde{m} = k + Q$.
I consider the construction of heterotic orbifold models based on a toroidal orbifold with non Abelian point group. I construct an explicit model based on the point group $S_3$ and calculate the spectrum and remnant symmetries. This model provides a simple example of rank reduction of the Yang--Mills gauge group directly in the string theory rather than in the effective field theory.
We find solutions of the bosonic sector of gauged N=4, D=4 SU(2) $\times$ SU(2) supergravity, which represent dilaton black holes with toroidal or spherical event horizons. The axion is consistently truncated, and the gauge group is broken to U(1) $\times$ U(1). The spherical black holes carry two electric and two magnetic abelian charges, whereas the toroidal holes have vanishing magnetic charges. The spacetime metrics are warped products, and the manifolds turn out to be globally hyperbolic, in contrast to standard gauged supergravity ground states. It is shown that in the toroidal case, the…
We show that one can construct D-branes in parafermionic and WZW theories (and their orbifolds) which have very natural geometrical interpretations, and yet are not automatically included in the standard Cardy construction of D-branes in rational conformal field theory. The relation between these theories and their T-dual description leads to an analogy between these D-branes and the familiar A-branes and B-branes of N=2 theories.
We consider D-branes on an orbifold $C^3/Z_n$ and investigate the moduli space of the D-brane world-volume gauge theory by using toric geometry and gauged linear sigma models. For $n=11$, we find that there are five phases, which are topologically distinct and connected by flops to each other. We also verify that non-geometric phases are projected out for $n=7,9,11$ cases as expected. Resolutions of non-isolated singularities are also investigated.
We construct N=4 gauged linear sigma models in two dimensions whose Higgs branch has a R^8/Z_k orbifold singularity or its generalization. Our linear sigma models have either ALF or ALE type hyperKahler 8-manifolds as their Higgs branch. For the ALE case, the matter content of our model is specified by a quiver diagram which is a union of two A-type extended Dynkin diagrams overlapping at one link.
We study systems of multiple localized closed string tachyons and the phenomena associated with their condensation, in C3/ZN nonsupersymmetric noncompact orbifold singularities using gauged linear sigma model constructions, following hep-th/0406039. Our study reveals close connections between the combinatorics of nonsupersymmetric flip transitions (between topologically distinct resolutions of the original singularity), the physics of tachyons of different degrees of relevance and the singularity structure of the corresponding residual endpoint geometries. This in turn can be used to study the…
In this paper, we construct gauge bundles on a noncommutative toroidal orbifold $T^4_θ/Z_2$. First, we explicitly construct a bundle with constant curvature connections on a noncommutative $T^4_θ$ following Rieffel's method. Then, applying the appropriate quotient conditions for its $Z_2$ orbifold, we find a Connes-Douglas-Schwarz type solution of matrix theory compactified on $T^4_θ/Z_2$. When we consider two copies of a bundle on $T^4_θ$ invariant under the $Z_2$ action, the resulting Higgs branch moduli space of equivariant constant curvature connections becomes an ordinary toroidal orbifol…
These lecture notes are meant to serve as an introduction to some geometric constructions and techniques (in particular the ones of toric geometry) often employed by the physicist working on string theory compactifications. The emphasis is wholly on the geometry side, not on the physics. The treated topics include toroidal orbifolds, methods of toric geometry, desinglularization of toroidal orbifolds and their orientifold quotients.
Quantum toroidal algebras are obtained from quantum affine algebras by a further affinization, and, like the latter, can be used to construct integrable systems. These algebras also describe the symmetries of instanton partition functions for 5D $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. We consider here the gauge theories defined on an orbifold $S^1\times\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_p$ where the action of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is determined by two integer parameters $(ν_1,ν_2)$. The corresponding quantum toroidal algebra is introduced as a deformation of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathf…
We systematically derive the perturbatively exact holomorphic gauge kinetic function, the open string Kaehler metrics and closed string Kaehler potential on intersecting D6-branes by matching open string one-loop computations of gauge thresholds with field theoretical gauge couplings in N=1 supergravity. We consider all cases of bulk, fractional and rigid D6-branes on T6/OR and the orbifolds T6/(Z(N)xOR) and T6/(Z(2)xZ(2M)xOR) without and with discrete torsion, which differ in the number of bulk complex structures and in the bulk Kaehler potential. Our analysis includes all supersymmetric conf…
We consider toroidal asymmetric orbifolds of the heterotic string preserving all 16 supercharges, developing a general formalism to study components of the moduli space characterized by rank reduction of the gauge group. In particular we construct six- and four-dimensional heterotic islands with no massless moduli other than the dilaton. The formalism involves the Leech lattice, its automorphisms and their corresponding invariant and normal, or coinvariant, sublattices.
We classify orbifold geometries which can be interpreted as moduli spaces of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ superconformal field theories up to rank 2 (complex dimension 6). The large majority of the geometries we find correspond to moduli spaces of known theories or discretely gauged version of them. Remarkably, we find 6 geometries which are not realized by any known theory, of which 3 have an $\mathcal{N}=2$ Coulomb branch slice with a non-freely generated coordinate ring, suggesting the existence of new, exotic $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories.
We study the CP-violating phase of the quark sector in the $U(8)$ flavor model on $T^2/Z_N \, (N=2,3,4,6)$ with non-vanishing magnetic fluxes, where properties of possible origins of the CP violation are investigated minutely. In this system, a non-vanishing value is mandatory in the real part of the complex modulus parameter $τ$ of the two-dimensional torus. On $T^2$ without orbifolding, underlying discrete flavor symmetries severely restrict the form of Yukawa couplings and it is very difficult to reproduce the observed pattern in the quark sector including the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm CP}…
We study topological properties of the D-brane resolution of three-dimensional orbifold singularities, C^3/Gamma, for finite abelian groups Gamma. The D-brane vacuum moduli space is shown to fill out the background spacetime with Fayet--Iliopoulos parameters controlling the size of the blow-ups. This D-brane vacuum moduli space can be classically described by a gauged linear sigma model, which is shown to be non-generic in a manner that projects out non-geometric regions in its phase diagram, as anticipated from a number of perspectives.
We study F-theory duals of singular heterotic K3 models that correspond to abelian toroidal orbifolds $T^4/Z_N$. While our focus is on the standard embedding, we also comment on models with Wilson lines and more general gauge embeddings. In the process of constructing the duals, we work out a Weierstrass description of the heterotic toroidal orbifold models, which exhibit singularities of Kodaira type $I_0^*, IV^*, III^*$, and $II^*$. This construction unveils properties like the instanton number per fixed point and a correlation between the orbifold order and the multiplicities in the Dynkin …
We consider four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric Type I compactifications on toroidal orbifolds T^6/G. In particular, we focus on the Type I vacua which are perturbative from the orientifold viewpoint, that is, on the compactifications with well defined world-sheet expansion. The number of such models is rather constrained. This allows us to study all such vacua. This, in particular, involves considering compactifications with non-trivial NS-NS antisymmetric tensor backgrounds. We derive massless spectra for these models, and also compute superpotentials. We review the reasons responsible for s…
The parameter-space orbifold construction of open and unoriented toroidal and (target-space) orbifold compactifications is briefly reviewed, with emphasis on the underlying geometrical framework. A class of chiral four-dimensional type-I vacua with three generations is also discussed.
We study the moduli space C^2 of unitary two-dimensional conformal field theories with central charge c=2. We construct all the 28 nonexceptional nonisolated irreducible components of C^2 that may be obtained by an orbifold procedure from toroidal theories. The parameter spaces and partition functions are calculated explicitly, and all multicritical points and lines are determined. We show that all but four of the 28 irreducible components of C^2 corresponding to nonexceptional orbifolds are directly or indirectly connected to the moduli space of toroidal theories in C^2. We relate our results…
We revisit partition functions of closed strings on toroidal backgrounds, including their $\mathbb{Z}_N$ shift orbifolds in the formalism where the dimension of the target space is doubled to make T-duality manifest. In such a T-duality covariant formalism, the constraint equation imposes a form of chiral factorization. Our computation furnishes a non-trivial consistency check for the quantum worldsheet theory of the doubled sigma model, when strings are placed on general toroidal backgrounds. The topological term that mixes the physical space and its T-dual is crucial in demonstrating that ch…

We construct yet another ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the $A_N$-type ALE space. In our construction the toric data of the ALE space are manifest. Due to the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry, the F-term is automatically determined. The toric data, which govern the Kähler structures of the ALE space, are embedded into $U(1)$ charges of charged hypermultiplets. The F-term is also inevitable to determine the complex structures of the ALE space. In the IR limit, we obtain the Kähler potential of the $A_N$-type ALE space. We also find the origin of the ${\mathbb Z}_{N+1}$ orbifold symmetry i…
We study a four-dimensional effective theory of the five-dimensional (5D) gauged supergravity with a universal hypermultiplet and perturbative superpotential terms at the orbifold fixed points. The class of models we consider includes the 5D heterotic M-theory and the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum model as special limits of the gauging parameters. We analyse the vacuum structure of the models, especially the nature of the moduli stabilization, from the viewpoint of the effective theory.
