Traditional thermoelectric Peltier coolers exhibit a cooling limit which is primarily determined by the figure of merit, zT. Rather than a fundamental thermodynamic limit, this bound can be traced to the difficulty of maintaining thermoelectric compatibility. Self-compatibility locally maximizes the cooler's coefficient of performance for a given zT and can be achieved by adjusting the relative ratio of the thermoelectric transport properties that make up zT. In this study, we investigate the theoretical performance of thermoelectric coolers that maintain self-compatibility across the device. We find such a device behaves very differently from a Peltier cooler, and term self-compatible coolers "Thomson coolers" when the Fourier heat divergence is dominated by the Thomson, as opposed to the Joule, term. A Thomson cooler requires an exponentially rising Seebeck coefficient with increasing temperature, while traditional Peltier coolers, such as those used commercially, have comparatively minimal change in Seebeck coefficient with temperature. When reasonable material property bounds are placed on the thermoelectric leg, the Thomson cooler is predicted to achieve approximately twice the maximum temperature drop of a traditional Peltier cooler with equivalent figure of merit (zT). We anticipate the development of Thomson coolers will ultimately lead to solid state cooling to cryogenic temperatures.
The Seebeck and Peltier effects have been widely studied and used in various thermoelectric technologies, including thermal energy harvesting and solid-state heat pumps. However, basic and applied studies on the Thomson effect, another fundamental thermoelectric effect in conductors, are limited despite the fact that the Thomson effect allows electronic cooling through the application of a temperature gradient bias rather than the construction of junction structures. In this article, we report the observation of a giant Thomson effect that appears owing to magnetic phase transitions. The Thoms…
We present a simplified, rapid, and accurate method for the measurement of the thermoelectric Thomson coefficient by the dynamical heating of a suspended wire by an alternating current. By applying a temperature gradient across the wire, we find that the response at the second harmonic of the excitation frequency is directly proportional to the Thomson coefficient. The absolute thermoelectric coefficient of a single material can therefore be extracted with high precision by a phase sensitive detector. We test our method on platinum and nickel wires and develop both analytical and numerical mod…

We phenomenologically calculate the performance of the recently-observed Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation (STTG) for various systems in terms of the thermopower, power factor, and figure of merit to demonstrate the usefulness of STTG. The STTG system consists of a closed circuit comprising thermoelectric and magnetic materials which exhibit the Seebeck and anomalous Hall effects, respectively. When a temperature gradient is applied to the hybrid system, the Seebeck effect in the thermoelectric material layer generates a longitudinal charge current in the closed circuit and t…
Solid-state thermoelectric cooling is expected to be widely used in various cryogenic applications such as local cooling of superconducting devices. At present, however, thermoelectric cooling using p- and n-type Bi2Te3-based materials has been put to practical use only at room temperature. Recently, M4SiTe4 (M = Ta, Nb) has been found to show excellent n-type thermoelectric properties down to 50 K. This paper reports on the synthesis of high-performance p-type M4SiTe4 by Ti doping, which can be combined with n-type M4SiTe4 in a cooling device at low temperatures. The thermoelectric power fact…

Whereas thermoelectric performance is normally limited by the figure of merit ZT, transverse thermoelectrics can achieve arbitrarily large temperature differences in a single leg even with inferior ZT by being geometrically tapered. We introduce a band-engineered transverse thermoelectric with p-type Seebeck in one direction and n-type orthogonal, resulting in off-diagonal terms that drive heat flow transverse to electrical current. Such materials are advantageous for microscale devices and cryogenic temperatures -- exactly the regimes where standard longitudinal thermoelectrics fail. InAs/GaS…

We propose the rotating thermoelectric (TE) device comprising of the single TE conductor operating in two periodical steady state modes: the switching periodical mode (P-mode) when hot and cold ends of the TE conductor are periodically instantly reversed and the continuous sinusoidal mode (S-mode) when the temperature of TE conductor edges varies continuously according to sine wave. Power generation and cooling regimes of rotating (TE) device in the periodic steady state was studied analytically. The efficiency and the cooling temperature of rotating TE device was found to depend not only on t…
Increasing the maximum cooling effect of a Peltier cooler can be achieved through materials and device design. The use of inhomogeneous, FGM (functionally graded materials) may be adopted in order to increase maximum cooling without improvement of the zT (figure of merit), however these systems are usually based on the assumption that the local optimization of the zT is the suitable criterion to increase thermoelectric performances. In the present paper, we solved the heat equation in a graded material and performed both analytic and numerical analysis of a graded Peltier cooler. We find a loc…
We analyze the thermoelectric cooling properties of a Corbino device in the quantum Hall regime on the basis of experimental data of electrical conductance. We focus on the cooling power and the coefficient of performance within and beyond linear response. Thermovoltage measurements in this device reported in {\em Phys. Rev. Applied, {\bf 14} 034019 (2020)} indicated that the transport takes place in the diffusive regime, without signatures of effects due to the electron-phonon interaction in a wide range of temperatures and filling factors. In this regime, the heat and charge currents by elec…
Thermoelectric devices convert temperature gradients into electrical power and vice versa, thus enabling energy scavenging from waste heat, sensing and cooling. Yet, many of these attractive applications are hindered by the limited efficiency of thermoelectric materials, especially in the low temperature regime. This review provides a summary of the recent advances in the design of new efficient silicon--based thermoelectric materials through nanostructuring, alloying and chemical optimization, emphasizing the contribution from theory and atomistic modeling.
We have measured thermoelectric properties of Ta2PdX6 (X=S, Se) around room temperature using single crystal samples. We find that the power factor of Ta2PdX6 is relatively high from middle-low to room temperatures, and notably Ta2PdSe6 shows the largest power factor among thermoelectric materials with an electrical conductivity of 10-2 Ωcm at 300 K. Ta2PdS6 will be a possible candidate for a Peltier cooling material if the lattice thermal conductivity is reduced by chemical substitution.
We present measurements of electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and thermopower of polycrystalline Sr-doped LaCoO3 with composition La0.95Sr0.05CoO3. Our data show that the investigated compound exhibits a very respectable room temperature thermoelectric figure of merit value of 0.18. Our results not only show that oxides are promising candidates for thermoelectric cooling applications, but also point towards the need for careful theoretical calculations that will serve as a guide in producing the next generation of thermoelectric materials.
Thermoelectric (TE) materials research plays a vital role in heat-to-electrical energy conversion and refrigeration applications. Bismuth-antimony (Bi-Sb) alloy is a promising material for thermoelectric cooling. Herein, a high figure of merit, ZT, near 0.6 at cryogenic temperatures (100-150K) has been achieved in melt-spun n-type Bi85Sb15 bulk samples consisting of micron-size grains. The achieved ZT is nearly 50 percents higher than polycrystalline averaged single crystal ZT of ~0.4, and it is also significantly higher than ZT of less than ~0.3 measured below 150K in Bi-Te alloys commonly us…
Thermoelectric (TE) air cooling is a solid-state technology that has the potential to replace conventional vapor compression-based air conditioning. Light Emitting Diodes emits no IR and no UV and their spectrum is fully in the visible part. But LEDs are not cold and all energy losses are thermal losses. The aim of this paper is to prove the feasibility to reuse the thermal losses to produce light through a thermoelectric module. Papers where Peltier modules are included in LEDs systems are all the time used for cooling [1-6]. At the knowledge of the authors, this the first time that thermal losses are used to increase the global efficiency of a high power LED lighting system by using Peltier modules to produce light.
A perspective magneto-thermo-electric cooling device (MTECD) comprising a central magnetocaloric (MC) material (e.g., Gd) sandwiched by two thermoelectric (TE) materials (e.g., MnP) is proposed. The presence of the TE materials in the MTECD guides the heat flow direction and enhances heat pulsation. In this case, the usage of a ferromagnetic TE material that combines large TE with small MC properties within a similar temperature region can enhance the magnetic flux density and heat exchange efficiency. Here, we show that MnP nanorod-structured films with desired magnetic, MC and TE properties …
The Thomson effect induces heat release or absorption under the simultaneous application of a charge current and a temperature gradient to conductors. Here, we theoretically investigate the temperature profile due to the Thomson-effect-induced heat release/absorption in junctionless single conductors which can be a simple temperature modulator. We also perform analysis of the temperature profile for realistic conductors. As a result, we find that, for a conductor with a large Thomson coefficient, the temperature derivative of the Seebeck coefficient, the Thomson-effect-induced heat absorption …
V-telluride superlattice thin films have shown promising performance for on-chip cooling devices. Recent experimental studies have indicated that device performance is limited by the metal/semiconductor electrical contacts. One challenge in realizing a low resistivity contacts is the absence of fundamental knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of interfaces between metal and V-telluride materials. Here we present a combination of experimental and theoretical efforts to understand, design and harness low resistivity contacts to V-tellurides. Ab initio calculations are used to explor…
Single crystals of the Bi-Ca-Co-O system have been grown using the flux method with cooling from 900$\celsius$ and 950$\celsius$, respectively. The single crystals are characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The misfit cobaltite [Ca$_2$Bi$_{1.4}$Co$_{0.6}$O$_4$]$^{RS}$[CoO$_2$]$_{1.69}$ single crystals with quadruple ($n$=4) rocksalt (RS) layer are achieved with cooling from 900$\celsius$. Such crystal exhibits room-temperature thermoelectric power (TEP) of 180$μ$V/K, much larger than that in Sr-based misfit cobaltites with quadruple RS layer. However, intergro…
Samples of heavy fermion compound CeCu6 were prepared by hot-press technique. Temperature-dependent (5-300 K) thermoelectric transport properties of the samples were measured. The dimensionless figure-of-merit (ZT) was optimized by varying the hot-pressing temperature. Our measurements of thermal conductivity show that the lowest hot pressing temperature (450 C) produces the lowest thermal conductivity. Electrical resistivity increases significantly while the Seebeck coefficient decreases with decrease in the hot pressing temperature. As the hot-pressing temperature decreases, electronic contr…
We report the discovery of a very large thermoelectric power over -400 microV K-1 in the whisker crystals of a one-dimensional telluride Ta4SiTe4, while maintaining a low electrical resistivity of rho = 2 mohm cm, yielding a very large power factor of P = 80 microW cm-1 K-2 at an optimum temperature of 130 K. This temperature is widely controlled from the cryogenic temperature of 50 K to room temperature by chemical doping, resulting in the largest P of 170 microW cm-1 K-2 at 220-280 K. These P values far exceed those of the Bi2Te3-Sb2Te3 alloys at around room temperature, offering an avenue f…
Bi2Te3-xSex family has been the n-type start-of-the-art thermoelectric materials near room temperatures (RT) for more than half-century, which dominates the active cooling and novel waves harvesting application near RT. However, the drawbacks of brittle nature and Te-containing restrict the further applications exploring. Here, we show that a Mg3+δSbxBi2-x family ((ZT)avg =1.05) could be a promising substitute for the Bi2Te3-xSex family ((ZT)avg =0.9-1.0) in the temperature range of 50-250 °C based on the comparable thermoelectric performance through a synergistic effect from the tunable band …
We model and evaluate the Peltier and Seebeck effects in magnetic multilayer nanostructures by a finite-element theory of thermoelectric properties. We present analytical expressions for the thermopower and the current-induced temperature changes due to Peltier cooling/heating. The thermopower of a magnetic element is in general spin-polarized, leading to spin-heat coupling effects. Thermoelectric effects in spin valves depend on the relative alignment of the magnetization directions and are sensitive to spin-flip scattering as well as inelastic collisions in the normal metal spacer.
We predict the existence of large barocaloric effects above room temperature in the thermoelectric fast-ion conductor Cu$_{2}$Se by using classical molecular dynamics simulations and first-principles computational methods. A hydrostatic pressure of $1$ GPa induces large isothermal entropy changes of $|ΔS| \sim 15$-$45$ Jkg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ and adiabatic temperature shifts of $|ΔT| \sim 10$ K in the temperature interval $400 \le T \le 700$ K. Structural phase transitions are absent in the analysed thermodynamic range. The causes of such large barocaloric effects are significant $P$-induced variat…

Thermoelectric effects allow the generation of electrical power from waste heat and the electrical control of cooling and heating. Remarkably, these effects are also highly sensitive to the asymmetry in the density of states around the Fermi energy and can therefore be exploited as probes of distortions in the electronic structure at the nanoscale. Here we consider two-dimensional graphene as an excellent nanoscale carbon material for exploring the interaction between electronic and thermal transport phenomena, by presenting a direct and quantitative measurement of the Peltier component to ele…
Thermoelectric (TE) refrigeration such as Peltier cooler enables a unique opportunity in electric energy to directly convert thermal energy. Here, we propose a TE module with both refrigeration and power generation modes by utilizing asymmetric surfaces of a magnetic topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator) with a periodic array of hollows filled with two different dielectrics. Based on the Boltzmann transport theory, we show that its efficiency, i.e., the dimensionless figure of merit ZT exceeds 1 in the low-temperature regime below 300 K. The proposed device could be utilized…
