We model and evaluate the Peltier and Seebeck effects in magnetic multilayer nanostructures by a finite-element theory of thermoelectric properties. We present analytical expressions for the thermopower and the current-induced temperature changes due to Peltier cooling/heating. The thermopower of a magnetic element is in general spin-polarized, leading to spin-heat coupling effects. Thermoelectric effects in spin valves depend on the relative alignment of the magnetization directions and are sensitive to spin-flip scattering as well as inelastic collisions in the normal metal spacer.
Grain boundaries are commonly observed in carbon nanostructures, but their influence on thermal and electric properties are still not completely understood. Using a combined approach of density functional tight-binding theory and non-equilibrium Green functions we investigate electron and phonon transport in carbon based systems. In this work, quantum transport and thermoelectric properties are summarized for graphene sheets, graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with a variety of grain boundary types in a wide temperature range. Motivated by previous findings that disorder scatters phonon…
Significant progress has been made in recent studies of thermal and thermoelectric transport phenomena in nanostructures and low-dimensional systems. This article reviews several intriguing quantum and classical size effects on thermal and thermoelectric properties that have been predicted by theoretical calculations or observed in experiments. Attention is focused on the Casimir limit in phonon boundary scattering and the effect of phonon confinement on the lattice thermal conductivity of semiconductor nanowires (NWs) and nanomeshes; the effects of thickness, lateral size, and interface inter…
The wave-like nature of electrons leads to the existence of upper bounds on the thermoelectric response of nanostructured devices [R. S. Whitney, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 130601 (2014); Phys. Rev. B 91, 115425 (2015)]. This fundamental result, not present in classical thermodynamics, was demonstrated exploiting a two-terminal device modelled by non-linear scattering theory. In the present paper, we consider non-linear quantum transport through the same type of device working both as thermal machine and as refrigerator. For both operations, starting from charge and heat current expressions, we pro…
The thermoelectric voltage of a quantum dot connected to leads is calculated using the scattering R-matrix method. Our approach takes into account a temperature gradient between the contacts beyond the linear regime. We obtain sign changes of the thermopower when varying the temperature or the chemical potential around the resonances. The influence of the coupling strength of the contacts and of the thermoelectric field on the thermoelectric voltage is discussed.
We use the concept of resonant tunneling to calculate the thermopower of molecular nanosystems. It turns out that the sign of the thermovoltage under resonant tunneling conditions depends sensitively on the participating molecular orbital, and one finds a sign change when the transport channel switches from the highest occupied molecular orbital to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. Comparing our results to recent experimental data obtained for a BDT molecule contacted with an STM tip, we observe good agreement.
A nanopowder from p-Bi-Sb-Te with particles ~ 10 nm were fabricated by the ball milling using different technological modes. Cold and hot pressing at different conditions and also SPS process were used for consolidation of the powder into a bulk nanostructure and nanocomposites. The main factors allowing slowing-down of the growth of nanograins as a result of recrystallization are the reduction of the temperature and of the duration of the pressing, the increase of the pressure, as well as addition of small value additives (like MoS2, thermally expanded graphite or fullerenes). It was reached …
We report on the thermoelectric properties of nickel doped Ag2-xNixTe (x = 0, 0.015, 0.025 & 0.055, 0.115, 0.155) nanostructures in the temperature (T) range of 5 K to 575 K. The electrical resistivity of Ag2Te nanostructure shows metallic behaviour in 5 K to 300 K initially that evolves into two metal to insulator transitions (MITs) at low and mid-temperature regimes with increasing x due to Mott-variable range hopping (VRH) and Arrhenius transports, respectively. Their Seebeck coefficient varies nearly in a linear fashion in this temperature range, showing metallic or doped-degenerate semico…
Half-Heusler and Heusler compounds have been of great interest for several decades for thermoelectric, magnetic, half-metallic and many other interesting properties. Among these systems, Zr-Ni-Sn compounds are interesting thermoelectrics which can go from semiconducting half-Heusler (HH) limit, ZrNiSn, to metallic Heusler (FH) limit, ZrNi$_2$Sn. Recently Makogo et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 133, 18843 (2011)] found that dramatic improvement in the thermoelectric power factor of HH can be achieved by putting excess Ni into the system. This was attributed to an energy filtering mechanism due to the …
The low thermal conductivity of silicon nanostructures, with respect to bulk silicon, opens excellent possibilities for thermoelectric applications because it will enable the use of silicon for the high efficient direct conversion of wasted heat into electrical power. This paves the way for the application of silicon devices for energy scavenging and green energy harvesting. We present a device with a large number of nanostructures suspended on a silicon substrate. Top-down techniques for device fabrication based on advanced lithography and anisotropic etching will be discussed. FEM simulation…
Local variations in the Seebeck coefficient in low-dimensional materials-based nanostructures and devices play a major role in their thermoelectric performance. Unfortunately, currently most thermoelectric measurements probe the aggregate characteristics of the device as a whole, failing to observe the effects of the local variations and internal structure. Such variations can be caused by local defects, geometry, electrical contacts or interfaces and often substantially influence thermoelectric properties, most profoundly in two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we use Scanning Thermal Gate M…
The thermoelectric power factor of hierarchically nanostructured materials is investigated using the nonequilibrium Greens function method for quantum transport, including interactions of electrons with acoustic and optical phonons. We describe hierarchical nanostructuring by superlatticelike potential barriers or wells, combined with quantum dot barriers or wells nanoinclusions as well as voids in the intermediate region. We show that these structures can be designed in a way that the power factor is not only largely immune to the presence of the nanostructure features, but under certain cond…

Superlattices are promising low-dimensional nanomaterials for thermoelectric technology that is capable of directly converting low-grade heat energy to useful electrical power. In this work, the thermal conductivities of GaAs/Ge superlattice nanostructures were investigated systematically in relation to their morphologies and interfaces. Thermal conductivities were measured using ultrafast time-domain thermoreflectance and were found to decrease with increasing interface densities, consistent with our understanding of microscopic phonon transport in the particle regime. Lower thermal conductiv…
This mini-review is intended as a short introduction to electron flow in nanostructures. Its aim is to provide a brief overview of this topic for people who are interested in the thermodynamics of quantum systems but know little about nanostructures. We particularly emphasize devices that work in the steady-state, such as simple thermoelectrics, but also mention cyclically driven heat engines. We do not aim to be either complete or rigorous, but use a few pages to outline some of the main ideas in the topic.

Edge states in narrow quasi two-dimensional nanostructures determine, to a large extent, their electric, thermoelectric and magnetic properties. Non-magnetic edge states may quite often lead to topological insulator type behavior. However another scenario develops when the zigzag edges are magnetic and the time reversal symmetry is broken. In this work we report on the electronic band structure modifications, electrical conductance and thermoelectric properties of narrow zigzag nanoribbons with spontaneously magnetized edges. Theoretical studies based on the Kane-Mele- Hubbard tight-binding mo…
Nanostructured composites and nanowire arrays of traditional thermoelectrics like Bi, Bi(1-x)Sb(x) and Bi(2)Te(3) have metallic Rashba surface spin-orbit bands featuring high mobilities rivaling that of the bulk for which topological insulator behavior has been proposed. Nearly pure surface electronic transport has been observed at low temperatures in Bi nanowires with diameter around the critical diameter, 50 nm, for the semimetal-to semiconductor transition. The surface contributes strongly to the thermopower, actually dominating for temperatures T < 100 K in these nanowires. The surface the…
This review focuses on the investigation and enhancement of the thermoelectric properties of semiconducting nanowires (NWs). NWs are nanostructures with typical diameters between few to hundreds of nm and length of few to several microns, exhibiting a high surface-to-volume ratio. Nowadays an extraordinary control over their growth has been achieved, enabling also the integration of different types of heterostructures, which can lead to the engineering of the functional properties of the NWs. In this review, we discuss all concepts which have been presented and achieved so far for the improvem…
We studied the thermoelectric coefficients (Seebeck and thermal conductance)of FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) from first principles using a generalized Landauer-Büttiker formalism. FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) MTJs usually yield smaller thermoelectric effects compared with epitaxial Fe|MgO|Fe(001) MTJs. The (magneto-) Seebeck effect is sensitive to the details of the FeCo$|$MgO interfaces. Interfacial oxygen vacancies (OVs) can enhance the thermoelectric effects in MTJs greatly. We also compute angular dependent Seebeck coefficients that provide more information about the transport …
A two-site nanostructure (e.g, a "molecule") bridging two conducting leads and connected to a phonon bath is considered. The two relevant levels closest to the Fermi energy are connected each to its lead. The leads have slightly different temperatures and chemical potentials and the nanos- tructure is also coupled to a thermal (third) phonon bath. The 3 x 3 linear transport ("Onsager") matrix is evaluated, along with the ensuing new figure of merit, and found to be very favorable for thermoelectric energy conversion.
We study the thermoelectric properties of three-dimensional topological insulators in magnetic fields with many holes (or pores) in the bulk. We find that at high density of these holes in the transport direction the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, can be large due to the contribution of the topologically protected conducting surfaces and the suppressed phonon thermal conductivity. By applying an external magnetic field a subgap can be induced in the surface states spectrum. We show that the thermoelectric efficiency can be controlled by this tunable subgap leading to the values of ZT much…
Thermoelectric effects in magnetic nanostructures and the so-called spin caloritronics are attracting much interest. Indeed it provides a new way to control and manipulate spin currents which are key elements of spin-based electronics. Here we report on giant magnetothermoelectric effect in Al2O3 magnetic tunnel junctions. The thermovoltage in this geometry can reach 1 mV. Moreover a magneto-thermovoltage effect could be measured with ratio similar to the tunnel magnetoresistance ratio. The Seebeck coefficient can then be tuned by changing the relative magnetization orientation of the two magn…
The magnetic skyrmion is a nanoscale topological object characterized by the winding of the magnetic moments, appearing in magnetic materials with broken inversion symmetry. Because of its low current threshold for driving, the skyrmions have been intensely studied toward novel storage applications by using electron-beam, X-ray, and visible light microscopies. Here, we show that the skyrmions can be imaged via thermoelectric signals of spin-caloritronic phenomena in combination with focused heating. We applied a local temperature gradient to a CoFeB/Ta/W multilayer film with scanning a heating…
We propose a mechanism for nanoscale energy conversion, an electric voltage induced by a temperature gradient in a junction composed of the same material having exactly the same geometric sizes, but distinct shapes. The proposed effect appears as a result of only temperature and shape difference, hence it is called thermoshape effect. For GaAs quantum confined semiconductor nanostructures, we first introduce the existence of quantum shape effects on thermoelectric transport coefficients at ballistic regime. We show that the shape alone enters as a control parameter on transport properties of c…
We demonstrate that thermoelectric signal as well as dc Josephson current may be severely enhanced in multi-terminal superconducting hybrid nanostructures exposed to a temperature gradient. At temperatures $T$ strongly exceeding the Thouless energy of our device both the supercurrent and the thermo-induced voltage are dominated by the contribution from non-equilibrium low energy quasiparticles and are predicted to decay slowly (algebraically rather than exponentially) with increasing $T$. We also predict a non-trivial current-phase relation and a transition to a $π$-junction state controlled b…
Electric and thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with Al and P impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. In the former case, appropriately arranged impurities can lead to a net magnetic moment and thus also to spin thermoelectric effects. In the latter case, in turn, spin thermoelectric effects also occur in the absence of impurities. Numerical results based on ab-initio calculations show that the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurities.
Conventional and spin-related thermoelectric effects in electronic transport through a nanoscopic system exhibiting magnetic anisotropy $-$with both uniaxial and transverse components$-$ are studied theoretically in the linear response regime. In particular, a magnetic tunnel junction with a large-spin impurity $-$either a magnetic atom or a magnetic molecule$-$ embedded in the barrier is considered as an example. Owing to magnetic interaction with the impurity, conduction electrons traversing the junction can scatter on the impurity, which effectively can lead to angular momentum and energy e…
We present a theoretical study of the electronic thermoelectric power of a semiconductor parabolic quantum well in a magnetic field. The case of a longitudinal magnetic field, with respect to the temperature gradient, has been considered. The calculations were carried out taking into account spin-splitting of the dimensionally quantized electronic energy levels. It has been shown that in the region of strong confinement the thermoelectric power decreases with increasing magnetic field, which is related to the downward shift of the lower Zeeman-split spin subband.
We report electrical conductance and thermopower measurements on InAs nanowires synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Gate modulation of the thermopower of individual InAs nanowires with diameter around 20nm is obtained over T=40 to 300K. At low temperatures (T< ~100K), oscillations in the thermopower and power factor concomitant with the stepwise conductance increases are observed as the gate voltage shifts the chemical potential of electrons in InAs nanowire through quasi-one-dimensional (1D) sub-bands. This work experimentally shows the possibility to modulate semiconductor nanowire's t…
Effects of electron-electron and spin-orbit interactions on the ground-state magnetic configuration and on the corresponding thermoelectric and spin thermoelectric properties in zigzag nanoribbons of two-dimensional hexagonal crystals are analyzed theoretically. Thermoelectric properties of quasi-stable magnetic states are also considered. Of particular interest is the influence of Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions on the topological edge states and on the transition between the topological insulator and conventional gap insulator states. It is shown that the interplay of both interactions h…
The thermoelectric effects in three-terminal structures with a quantum dot are considered. We propose the experimentally consistent protocol for determination of the transport coefficients in terms of the local and non-local conductances and thermopowers that can be measured in two steps, applying the `four probe technique'. This proposal is compared with other approaches discussed so far in the literature. As an example we study in detail the thermopower induced by the superconducting electrode in a subgap regime which might be useful for analysis of novel hybrid devices.
Thermoelectric properties of Graphene Nanoribbons doped by magnetic impurities Fe and Co are carried out in room temperature. We report on a study of the band structure dependent properties such as electrical conductivity, charge of carriers and Seebeck coefficients. We investigate the thermoelectric properties using the Semi-classical Boltzmann method. The electronic band structure of doped nanoribbons are evaluated by using density-functional theory in which the Hubbard interaction is considered. In this work we compare the different types of the nanoribbons and their thermoelectric features…
We analyze the effect of the tilt on the transverse thermoelectric coefficient of Weyl semimetals in the \emph{conformal} limit, i.e., zero temperature and zero chemical potential. Using the Kubo formalism, we find a nonmonotonic behavior of the thermoelectric conductivity as a function of the tilt perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a linear behavior when the tilt is aligned to the magnetic field. An ``axial Nernst" current (chiral currents counter propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic field and the temperature gradient) is generated in inversion symmetric Weyl materials when the t…
Thermoelectric (TE) refrigeration such as Peltier cooler enables a unique opportunity in electric energy to directly convert thermal energy. Here, we propose a TE module with both refrigeration and power generation modes by utilizing asymmetric surfaces of a magnetic topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator) with a periodic array of hollows filled with two different dielectrics. Based on the Boltzmann transport theory, we show that its efficiency, i.e., the dimensionless figure of merit ZT exceeds 1 in the low-temperature regime below 300 K. The proposed device could be utilized…
By introducing a normal self-energy to incorporate the effects of magnetic impurities, Kondo effects in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes are investigated within the Anderson model and Landauer formula. Magnetic impurities induce Kondo resonance and bring a valley of conductance unction near the Fermi level. The conductance of the nanotube increases with the temperature in the low temperature range. Thermoelectric power induced by magnetic impurities is gotten from Mott relation, and the calculations indicate its dependence on the temperature could interpret the experiment well.
It is known that under microwave irradiation, in 2D electron systems with high filling factors oscillations of longitudinal magnetoresistance appear in the range of magnetic fields where ordinary SdH oscillations are suppressed. In the present paper we propose a simple quasiclassical model of these new oscillations based on the Boltzmann kinetic equation. Our model also predicts similar oscillations in diffusion component of thermoelectric coefficients, which should be observable at low temperatures.
The high-magnetic-field thermoelectric effect in nodal-line semimetals with straight nodal lines was investigated. Three-dimensional (3D) Dirac/Weyl semimetals exhibit constant thermoelectric Hall conductivity at the high-magnetic-field quantum limit, resulting in a boundless linear increase of Seebeck coefficient. This is known as the quantized thermoelectric Hall effect (QTHE), and is expected to lead to high-performance thermoelectricity at low temperatures. Here, in addition to Dirac/Weyl semimetals, we demonstrated that 3D semimetals with straight nodal lines can also exhibit the QTHE und…
In this work we discuss the use of interferometric measurement technique to study microwave magnetization dynamics on ferromagnetic nanostructures. We demonstrate that in this way one can resolve features which are impossible to resolve with broadband ferromagnetic resonance and traveling spin wave spectroscopy otherwise.
We theoretically consider the spin Seebeck effect, the charge Seebeck coefficient, and the thermoelectric figure of merit in superconducting hybrid structures including either magnetic textures or intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that large magnitudes for all these quantities are obtainable in Josephson-based systems with either zero or a small externally applied magnetic field. This provides an alternative to the thermoelectric effects generated in high-field ($\sim 1$ T) superconducting hybrid systems, which were recently experimentally demonstrated. The systems studied contain …
Nonlinear transport coefficients do not obey, in general, reciprocity relations. We here discuss the magnetic-field asymmetries that arise in thermoelectric and heat transport of mesoscopic systems. Based on a scattering theory of weakly nonlinear transport, we analyze the leading-order symmetry parameters in terms of the screening potential response to either voltage or temperature shifts. We apply our general results to a quantum Hall antidot system. Interestingly, we find that certain symmetry parameters show a dependence on the measurement configuration.
Giant thermoelectric effects are known to arise at the interface between superconductors and strongly polarized ferromagnets, enabling the construction of efficient thermoelectric generators. We predict that the thermopower of such a generator can be completely controlled by a magnetic input signal: Not only can the thermopower be toggled on and off by rotating a magnet, but it can even be entirely reversed. This in situ control diverges from conventional thermoelectrics, where the thermopower is usually fixed by the device design.
In this paper we consider charge current generated by maintaining a temperature difference over a nanowire at zero voltage bias. For topological insulator nanowires in a perpendicular magnetic field the current can change sign as the temperature of one end is increased. Here we study how this thermoelectric current sign reversal depends on magnetic field and how impurities affect the size of the thermoelectric current. We consider both scalar and magnetic impurities and show that their influence on the current are quite similar, although the magnetic impurities seem to be more effective in red…
Transverse magneto-thermoelectric effects are studied in permalloy thin films grown on MgO substrates. We find that small parasitic magnetic fields below 1 Oe can produce artifacts of the order of 1 % of the amplitude of the anisotropic magneto-thermopower which is also detected in the experiments. The measured artifacts reveal a new source of uncertainties for the detection of the transverse spin Seebeck effect. Taking these results into account we conclude that the contribution of the transverse spin Seebeck effect to the detected voltages is below the noise level of 20 nV.
The magnetic configurations of barcode-type magnetic nanostructures consisting of alternate ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic layers arranged within a multilayer nanotube structure are investigated as a function of their geometry. Based on a continuum approach we have obtained analytical expressions for the energy which lead us to obtain phase diagrams giving the relative stability of characteristic internal magnetic configurations of the barcode-type nanostructures.
We present a microscopic theory of the magnetic quadrupole moment density $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ in periodic crystals with combined time reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) and inversion ($\mathcal{I}$) symmetry. We obtain a gauge-invariant expression with clear physical interpretation and demonstrate the typical behaviour of $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ in a minimal two-band model that hosts a tilted Dirac cone. We then show that $\mathcal{Q}_{ij}$ leads to an intrinsic nonlinear anomalous thermoelectric current. As an example, we calculate the nonlinear Nernst and Hall current in the loop-current model for cuprate s…
The reduction of the thermal conductivity in nanostructures opens up the possibility of exploiting for thermoelectric purposes also materials such as silicon, which are cheap, available and sustainable but with a high thermal conductivity in their bulk form. The development of thermoelectric devices based on these innovative materials requires reliable techniques for the measurement of thermal conductivity on a nanometric scale. The approximations introduced by conventional techniques for thermal conductivity measurements can lead to unreliable results when applied to nanostructures, because h…
Spin-related effects in thermoelectricity can be used to design more efficient refrigerators and offer novel promising applications for the harvesting of thermal energy. The key challenge is to design structural and compositional magnetic material systems with sufficiently high efficiency and power output for transforming thermal energy into electric energy and vice versa. Here, the fabrication of large-area 3D interconnected Co/Cu nanowire networks is demonstrated, thereby enabling the controlled Peltier cooling of macroscopic electronic components with an external magnetic field. The flexibl…
We examine the effect of the magnetic field on the proximity effect in nanostructures, self consistently using the Bogoliubov-deGennes formalism within the two dimensional extended Hubbard model. We calculate the local density of states and the pair amplitude. We study several nanostructures: superconductor - two dimensional electron gas, superconductor - ferromagnet. In these structures the magnetic field can be considered as a modulation parameter for the proximity effect.
Thermoelectric coefficients of an ultra-thin topological insulator are presented here. The hybridization between top and bottom surface states of a topological insulator plays a significant role. In absence of magnetic field, thermopower increases and thermal conductivity decreases with increase of the hybridization energy. In presence of magnetic field perpendicular to the ultra-thin topological insulator, thermoelectric coefficients exhibit quantum oscillations with inverse magnetic field, whose frequency is strongly modified by the Zeeman energy and phase factor is governed by the product o…
Coupled double quantum dots (c-2QD) connected to leads have been widely adopted as prototype model systems to verify interference effects on quantum transport at the nanoscale. We provide here an analytic study of the thermoelectric properties of c-2QD systems pierced by a uniform magnetic field. Fully analytic and easy-to-use expressions are derived for all the kinetic functionals of interest. Within the Green 0 s function formalism, our results allow a simple inexpensive procedure for the theoretical description of the thermoelectric phenomena for different chemical potentials and temperatur…
The influence of nanostructuring and quantum confinement on the thermoelectric properties of materials has been extensively studied. While this has made possible multiple breakthroughs in the achievable figure of merit, classical confinement, and its effect on the local Seebeck coefficient has mostly been neglected, as has the Peltier effect in general due to the complexity of measuring small temperature gradients locally. Here we report that reducing the width of a graphene channel to 100 nm changes the Seebeck coefficient by orders of magnitude. Using a scanning thermal microscope allows us …
