Thermoelectric properties of Graphene Nanoribbons doped by magnetic impurities Fe and Co are carried out in room temperature. We report on a study of the band structure dependent properties such as electrical conductivity, charge of carriers and Seebeck coefficients. We investigate the thermoelectric properties using the Semi-classical Boltzmann method. The electronic band structure of doped nanoribbons are evaluated by using density-functional theory in which the Hubbard interaction is considered. In this work we compare the different types of the nanoribbons and their thermoelectric features in the presence and absence of the magnetic impurities and discuss the importance of the distance between impurities and the edge of the nanoribbons.
Effects of electron-electron and spin-orbit interactions on the ground-state magnetic configuration and on the corresponding thermoelectric and spin thermoelectric properties in zigzag nanoribbons of two-dimensional hexagonal crystals are analyzed theoretically. Thermoelectric properties of quasi-stable magnetic states are also considered. Of particular interest is the influence of Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions on the topological edge states and on the transition between the topological insulator and conventional gap insulator states. It is shown that the interplay of both interactions h…
Recent works devoted to the synthesis of artificial molecular systems with quasi-fractal geometry provide new opportunities for the experimental study of electronic properties in atomic systems of fractional dimension. There has been a renewed interest in theoretical studies of transport phenomena in fractal nanosystems. In this work, using calculations based on the density functional theory, molecular dynamics, and the method of non-equilibrium Green functions, we study electronic and thermoelectric properties of a device based on quasi-fractal carbon nitride nanoribbon with Sierpinski triang…
In this work, the electronic properties of phosphorene nanoribbons with different width and edge configurations are studied by using density functional theory. It is found that the armchair phosphorene nanoribbons are semiconducting while the zigzag nanoribbons are metallic. The band gaps of armchair nanoribbons decrease monotonically with increasing ribbon width. By passivating the edge phosphorus atoms with hydrogen, the zigzag series also become semiconducting, while the armchair series exhibit a larger band gap than their pristine counterpart. The electronic transport properties of these p…
We study the thermoelectric performance of $90^0$-bent graphene nanoribbons containing nanopores for optimized design of multiple functional circuits including thermoelectric generators. We show that the thermal conductance of the $90^0$-bent ribbons is lower from few times to an order of magnitude compared to that of pristine armchair and zigzag straight ribbons. Consequently, the thermoelectric performance of the bent ribbons is better than its straight ribbon counterparts, in particular at high temperatures above 500 K. More importantly, the introduction of nanopores is demonstrated to stro…
We investigate the electron transport and thermoelectric property of twisted bilayer graphene nanoribbon junction (TBGNRJ) in $0^o$, $21.8^o$, $38.2^o$ and $60^o$ rotation angles by first principles calculation with Landauer-Buttiker and Boltzmann theories. It is found that TBGNRJs exhibit negative differential resistance (NDR) in $21.8^o$ and $38.2^o$ rotation angles under $\pm$ 0.2 V bias voltage. More importantly, three peak ZT values of 2.0, 2.7 and 6.1 can be achieved in the $21.8^o$ rotation angle at 300K. The outstanding ZT values of TBGNRJs are interpreted as the combination of the red…
Armchair phosphorene nanoribbons (APNRs) are known to be semiconductors with an indirect bandgap. Here, we propose to introduce new states in the gap of APNRs by creating a periodic structure of vacancies (antidots). Based on the tight-binding model, we show that a periodic array of vacancies or nanopores leads to the formation of an impurity band inside the gap region. We first present an analytical expression for the dispersion relation of an impurity band induced by hybridization of bound states associated with each single vacancy defect. Then, we increase the size of vacancy defects to inc…
Thermoelectric properties of finite graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) coupled to metallic electrodes are theoretically studied in the framework of tight-binding model and Green's function approach. When the zigzag sides are coupled to the electrodes, the electron transport through the localized edge states can occur only if the channel length between electrodes is smaller than the decay length of these localized zigzag edge states. When the armchair edges are coupled to the electrodes, there is an interesting thermoelectric behavior associated with the mid-gap states when the GNR is in the semicondu…
In this work, we have designed and simulated new thermoelectric generator based on monolayer and few-layer MoS2 nanoribbons. The proposed thermoelectric generator is composed of thermocouples made of both n-type and p-type MoS2 nanoribbon legs. Density Functional Tight-Binding Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (DFTB-NEGF) method has been used to calculate the transmission spectrum of MoS2 armchair and zigzag nanoribbons. Phonon transmission spectrum are calculated based on parameterization of Stillinger-Weber potential. Thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, is calculated using these electronic an…
We study thermoelectric devices where a single 18-annulene molecule is connected to metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR) via highly transparent contacts that allow for injection of evanescent wave functions from ZGNRs into the molecular ring. Their overlap generates a peak in the electronic transmission, while ZGNRs additionally suppress hole-like contributions to the thermopower. Thus optimized thermopower, together with suppression of phonon transport through ZGNR-molecule-ZGNR structure, yield the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT ~ 0.5 at room temperature and 0.5 < ZT < 2.5 below li…
Using ab-initio methods we calculate thermoelectric and spin thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons with bare, mono-hydrogenated and di-hydrogenated edges. Asymmetric structures, in which one edge is either bare or di-hydrogenated while the other edge is mono-hydrogenated (0H-1H and 2H-1H nanoribbons) have ferromagnetic ground state and display remarkable conventional and spin thermoelectric properties. Strong enhancement of the thermoelectric efficiency, both conventional and spin ones, results from a very specific band structure of such nanoribbons, where one spin channel is block…
We present electronic and transport properties of a zigzag nanoribbon made of alpha-$\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice. Our particular focus is on the effects of the continous evolution of the edge modes ( from flat to dispersive) on the thermoelectric transport properties. Unlike the case of graphene nanoribbon, the zigzag nanoribbon of $α-\mathcal{T}_3$ lattice can host a pair of dispersive (chiral) edge modes at the two valleys for specific width of the ribbon. Moreover, gap opening can also occur at the two valleys depending on the width. The slope of the chiral edge modes and the energy gap strongly…
Electric and thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons doped with Al and P impurity atoms are investigated theoretically for both antiparallel and parallel orientations of the edge magnetic moments. In the former case, appropriately arranged impurities can lead to a net magnetic moment and thus also to spin thermoelectric effects. In the latter case, in turn, spin thermoelectric effects also occur in the absence of impurities. Numerical results based on ab-initio calculations show that the spin thermopower can be considerably enhanced by the impurities.
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibility of realizing an electron-crystal coexisting with a phonon-glass. The calculated thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) values qualify zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a very promising material for thermoele…
The thermoelectric properties of hybrid graphene-boron nitride nanoribbons (BCNNRs) are investigated using the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach. We find that the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can be remarkably enhanced by periodically embedding hexagonal BN (h-BN) into graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Compared to pristine GNRs, the ZT for armchair-edged BCNNRs with width index 3p+2 is enhanced up to 10~20 times while the ZT of nanoribbons with other widths is enhanced just by 1.5~3 times. As for zigzag-edge nanoribbons, the ZT is enhanced up to 2~3 times. This improvement com…
Transport and thermoelectric coefficients (including also spin thermopower) of silicene nanoribbons with zigzag edges are investigated by {\it ab-initio} numerical methods. Local spin density of such nanoribbons reveals edge magnetism. Like in graphene, one finds antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ordering, with spin polarization at one edge antiparallel or parallel to that at the other edge, respectively. Thermoelectric properties, especially the Seebeck coefficient, significantly depend on the electronic band structure and are enhanced when the Fermi level is in the energy gap. However, the…
The influence of periodic edge vacancies and antidot arrays on the thermoelectric properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons is investigated. Using the Green's function method, the tight-binding approximation for the electron Hamiltonian and the 4th nearest neighbor approximation for the phonon dynamical matrix, we calculate the Seebeck coefficient and the thermoelectric figure of merit. It is found that, at a certain periodic arrangement of vacancies on both edges of zigzag nanoribbon, a finite band gap opens and almost twofold degenerate energy levels appear. As a result, a marked increase in…
Impact of Valley Degeneracy on Thermoelectric Properties of Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons with Staggered Sublattice Potentials and Transverse Electric Fields
Thermoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons with periodic edge vacancies and antidot lattice are investigated. The electron-phonon interaction is taken into account in the framework of the Hubbard-Holstein model with the use of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation scheme. The electron transmission function, the thermopower and the thermoelectric figure of merit are calculated. We have found that the electron-phonon interaction causes a decrease in the peak values of the thermoelectric figure of merit and the shift of the peak positions closer to the center of the bandgap. The effects a…
We theoretically study the electrical, thermal and thermoelectric transport properties of graphene nanoribbons under torsional deformations. The modelling follows a nonequilibrium Green's function approach in the ballistic transport regime, describing the electrical and phononic properties through \textit{ab-initio} density functional theory and empirical interatomic potentials, respectively. We consider two different types of deformations, a continuous twist of a given angle applied to the nanoribbon, and two consecutive twists applied in opposite angular directions. The numerical results are…
Electronic transport properties in armchair shaped edges graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) doped various impurities have been simulated by the non-equilibrium Green's function approach combined with the first principle calculation based on the density functional theory. We have observed that impurity levels appear in electronic struc-tures, and that the quantization of transmission function is moderated for doped AGNRs. The I-V characteristic can be computed from the transmission function. Our simulation results show that AGNRs doped impurities have higher conductance than the non-doped one.
Transport and thermoelectric properties of finite textured graphene nanoribbons (t-GNRs) connected to electrodes with various coupling strengths are theoretically studied in the framework of the tight-binding model and Green's function approach. Due to quantum constriction induced by the indented edges, such t-GNRs behave like serially-coupled graphene quantum dots (SGQDs). These types of SGQDs can be formed by tailoring zigzag GNRs (ZGNRs) or armchair GNRs (AGNRs). Their bandwidths and gaps can be engineered by varying the size of the quantum dot and the neck width at indented edges. Effects …
Edge states in narrow quasi two-dimensional nanostructures determine, to a large extent, their electric, thermoelectric and magnetic properties. Non-magnetic edge states may quite often lead to topological insulator type behavior. However another scenario develops when the zigzag edges are magnetic and the time reversal symmetry is broken. In this work we report on the electronic band structure modifications, electrical conductance and thermoelectric properties of narrow zigzag nanoribbons with spontaneously magnetized edges. Theoretical studies based on the Kane-Mele- Hubbard tight-binding mo…
The thermoelectric properties of MoS2 armchair nanoribbons with different width are studied by using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann transport theory, where the relaxation time is predicted from deformation potential theory. Due to the dangling bonds at the armchair edge, there is obvious structure reconstruction of the nanoribbons which plays an important role in governing the electronic and transport properties. The investigated armchair nanoribbons are found to be semiconducting with indirect gaps, which exhibit interesting width-dependent oscillation behavior. The smaller gap o…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag bilayer phosphorene nanoribbons (ZBPNR). We first, draw an analogy between the extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder and ZBPNR edge states and obtain their corresponding band structure and wave functions analytically. Then, by applying the energy filtering method, we show that the electric power and thermoelectric efficiency of the ZBPNRs can be improved remarkably in the presence of mid-gap edge states. We also argue how to engineer the edge modes to further optimize thermoelectric power and efficiency of the system by …
Recently synthesized two-dimensional graphene-like material referred to as graphenylene is a semiconductor with a narrow direct bandgap that holds great promise for nanoelectronic applications. The significant bandgap increase can be provided by the strain applied to graphenylene crystal lattice or by using nanoribbons instead of extended layers. In this paper, we present the systematic study of the electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of graphenylene nanoribbons using calculations based on the density functional theory. Estimating the binding energies, we substantiate the stabili…
In this work we study thermoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons with side-attached organic molecules. By adopting a single-band tight binding Hamiltonian and the Green's function formalism, we calculated the transmission and Seebeck coefficients for different hybrid systems. The corresponding thermopower profiles exhibit a series of sharp peaks at the eigenenergies of the isolated molecule. We study the effects of the temperature on the thermoelectric response, and we consider random configurations of molecule distributions, in different disorder regimes. The main characteristics of th…
Using first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the effects of topological edge states on the thermoelectric properties of Bi nanoribbons. It is found that there is a competition between the edge and bulk contributions to the Seebeck coefficients. However, the electronic transport of the system is dominated by the edge states because of its much larger electrical conductivity. As a consequence, a room temperature value exceeding 3.0 could be achieved for both p- and n-type systems when the relaxation time ratio between the edge and the bulk states i…
The nonlinear spin-dependent transport properties in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) edge doped by an atom of group III and V elements are studied systematically using density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Greens functions. The dopant type, acceptor or donor, and the geometrical symmetry, odd or even, are found critical in determining the spin polarization of the current and the current-voltage characteristics. For ZGNRs substitutionally doped on the lower-side edge, the down (up) spin current dominates in odd-(even-)width ZGNRs under a bias voltage around 1V. Remarkably,…
The search for half-metals and spin-gapless semiconductors has attracted extensive attention in material design for spintronics. Existing progress in such a search often requires peculiar atomistic lattice configuration and also lacks active control of the resulting electronic properties. Here we reveal that a boron-nitride nanoribbon with a carbon-doped edge can be made a half-metal or a spin-gapless semiconductor in a programmable fashion. The mechanical strain serves as the on/off switches for functions of half-metal and spin-gapless semiconductor to occur. Our findings shed light on how th…
Thermoelectric measurements for graphene ribbons are currently performed on samples that include atomic disorder via defects and irregular edges. In this work, we investigate the thermopower or Seebeck coefficient of graphene ribbons within the linear response theory and the Landauer formalism, and we consider the diffusive regime taken as a limit of the ribbon aspect ratio. We find that the thermopower and the electronic conductivity depend not only on the aspect ratio, but also on chemical potential and temperature, which are set here as key parameters. The obtained numerical results with te…
We overview nonequilibrium Green function combined with density functional theory (NEGF-DFT) modeling of independent electron and phonon transport in nanojunctions with applications focused on a new class of thermoelectric devices where a single molecule is attached to two metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) via highly transparent contacts. Such contacts make possible injection of evanescent wavefunctions from ZGNRs, so that their overlap within the molecular region generates a peak in the electronic transmission. Additionally, the spatial symmetry properties of the transverse propaga…
We analyze electronic and phononic quantum transport through zigzag or chiral graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) perforated with an array of nanopores. Since local charge current profiles in these GNRs are peaked around their edges, drilling nanopores in their interior does not affect such edge charge currents while drastically reducing heat current carried by phonons in sufficiently long wires. The combination of these two effects can yield highly efficient thermoelectric devices with maximum $ZT \simeq 11$ at liquid nitrogen temperature and $ZT \simeq 4$ at room temperature achieved in $\sim 1$ $μ$…
We study the crystal reconstruction in the presence of monovacancies (MVs), divacancies (DVs) and linear vacancies (LVs) in a zigzag silicene nanoribbon (ZSiNR) with transversal symmetry. Their influence on the electric and thermoelectric properties is assessed by the density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's functions. In particular, we focus on the spin resolved conductance, magnetoresistance and current-voltage curves. A 5-atom-ring is formed in MVs, a 5-8-5 ring structure in DVs, and a 8-4-8-4 ring structure in LVs. The linear conductance becomes strongly spin depe…
The thermoelectric properties of in plane heterostructures made of Graphene and hexagonal Boron Nitride (BN) have been investigated by means of atomistic simulation. The heterostructures consist in armchair graphene nanoribbons to the sides of which BN flakes are periodically attached. This arrangement generates a strong mismatch of phonon modes between the different sections of the ribbons, which leads to a very small phonon conductance, while the electron transmission is weakly affected. In combination with the large Seebeck coefficient resulting from the BN-induced bandgap opening or broade…
A novel type of spaser with the net amplification of surface plasmons (SPs) in doped graphene nanoribbon is proposed. The plasmons in THz region can be generated in a dopped graphene nanoribbon due to nonradiative excitation by emitters like two level quantum dots located along a graphene nanoribbon. The minimal population inversion per unit area, needed for the net amplification of SPs in a doped graphene nanoribbon is obtained. The dependence of the minimal population inversion on the surface plasmon wavevector, graphene nanoribbon width, doping and damping parameters necessary for the ampli…
The thermoelectric properties of polythiophene (PT) coupled to the Au (111) electrodes are studied based on density functional theory combined with nonequilibrium Green function formalism. Specially, the effect of Li and Cl adsorbents on the thermoelectric efficiency of the PT junction is investigated in different concentrations of the dopants for two lengths of the PT. Results show that the presence of dopants can bring the structural changes in the oligomer and modify the arrangement of the molecular levels leading to the dramatic changes in the transmission spectra of the junction. Therefor…
Using density functional theory combined with a Green's function scattering approach, we examine the thermoelectric properties of hetero-nanoribbons formed from alternating lengths of graphene and boron nitride. In such structures, the boron nitride acts as a tunnel barrier, which weakly couples states in the graphene, to form mini-bands . In un-doped nanoribbons, the mini bands are symmetrically positioned relative to the Fermi energy and do not enhance thermoelectric performance significantly. In contrast, when the ribbons are doped by electron donating or electron accepting adsorbates, the …
Thermoelectric materials open a way to harness dissipated energy and make electronic devices less energy-demanding. Heat-to-electricity conversion requires materials with a strongly suppressed thermal conductivity but still high electronic conduction. This goal is largely achieved with the help of nanostructured materials, even if the bulk counterpart is not highly efficient. In this work, we investigate how thermoelectric efficiency is enhanced by many-body effects in graphene nanoribbons at low temperature. To this end, starting from the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model within a mean-field approximat…
Structural manipulation at the nanoscale breaks the intrinsic correlations among different energy carrier transport properties, achieving high thermoelectric performance. However, the coupled multifunctional (phonon and electron) transport in the design of nanomaterials makes the optimization of thermoelectric properties challenging. Machine learning brings convenience to the design of nanostructures with large degree of freedom. Herein, we conducted comprehensive thermoelectric optimization of isotopic armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) with antidots and interfaces by combining Green's fun…
The electronic properties of boron-nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) doped with a line of carbon atoms are investigated by using density functional calculations. Three different configurations are possible: the carbon atoms may replace a line of boron or nitrogen atoms or a line of alternating B and N atoms which results in very different electronic properties. We found that: i) the NCB arrangement is strongly polarized with a large dipole moment having an unexpected direction, ii) the BCB and NCN arrangement are non-polar with zero dipole moment, iii) the doping by a carbon line reduces the band ga…
Topological insulator (TI) nanoribbons (NRs) provide a unique platform for investigating quantum interference oscillations combined with topological surface states. One-dimensional subbands formed along the perimeter of a TI NR can be modulated by an axial magnetic field, exhibiting Aharonov-Bohm (AB) and Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) oscillations of magnetoconductance (MC). Using Sb-doped Bi2Se3 TI NRs, we found that the relative amplitudes of the two quantum oscillations can be tuned by varying the channel length, exhibiting crossover from quasi-ballistic to diffusive transport regimes. The …
High quality graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) grown by on-surface synthesis strategies with atomic precision can be controllably doped by inserting heteroatoms or chemical groups in the molecular precursors. Here, we study the electronic structure of armchair GNRs substitutionally doped with di-boron moieties at the center, through a combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission, and density functional theory simulations. Boron atoms appear with a small displacement towards the surface signaling their stronger interaction with the metal. We find two boron-rich flat ba…
Thermoelectric junctions are often made of components of different materials characterized by distinct transport properties. Single material junctions, with the same type of charge carriers, have also been considered to investigate various classical and quantum effects on the thermoelectric properties of nanostructured materials. We here introduce the concept of defect-induced thermoelectric voltage, namely, {\it thermodefect voltage}, in graphene nanoribbon (GNR) junctions under a temperature gradient. Our thermodefect junction is formed by two GNRs with identical properties except the existe…
Thermoelectrics as a way to use waste heat, is essential in electronic industries, but its low performance at operational temperatures makes it inappropriate in practical applications. Tailoring graphene can change its properties. In this work, we are interested in studying the transport properties of S-shape graphene structures with the single vacancy (SV) and double vacancy (DV) models. The structures are composed of a chiral part, which is an armchair graphene nanoribbon, and two zigzag graphene ribbons. We investigate the changes in the figure of merit by means of the Seebeck coefficient, …
We report on the thermoelectric properties of nickel doped Ag2-xNixTe (x = 0, 0.015, 0.025 & 0.055, 0.115, 0.155) nanostructures in the temperature (T) range of 5 K to 575 K. The electrical resistivity of Ag2Te nanostructure shows metallic behaviour in 5 K to 300 K initially that evolves into two metal to insulator transitions (MITs) at low and mid-temperature regimes with increasing x due to Mott-variable range hopping (VRH) and Arrhenius transports, respectively. Their Seebeck coefficient varies nearly in a linear fashion in this temperature range, showing metallic or doped-degenerate semico…
Graphene is known to show a significant photo-thermoelectric effect that can exceed its photovoltaic contribution. Here, by utilizing this effect, we demonstrate a photovoltage measurement of cyclotron resonance in a double-back-gated h-BN/graphene/h-BN two-terminal device. A graphite local bottom gate was fabricated in addition to a p-doped Si global back gate. By tuning the two gate voltages, an in-plane graphene junction having an asymmetric carrier-doping profile was created. With the help of this asymmetric structure, the photo-thermoelectric voltage generated in the vicinity of the metal…
The spin dependent charge transport in zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) has been investigated by the nonequilibrium Green's function method combined with the density functional theory at the local spin density approximation. The current versus voltage curve shows distinguished behaviors for symmetric and asymmetric ZGNRs and the doping on the ZGNR edges can manipulate the spin transport. In special cases that a Be atom is substitutionally doped on one edge of the symmetric ZGNRs, one spin current shows negative differential resistance while the other increases monotonically with the bias. T…
A topological insulator is a new state of matter, possessing gapless spin-locking surface states across the bulk band gap which has created new opportunities from novel electronics to energy conversion. However, the large concentration of bulk residual carriers has been a major challenge for revealing the property of the topological surface state via electron transport measurement. Here we report surface state dominated transport in Sb-doped Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with very low bulk electron concentrations. In the nanoribbons with sub-10nm thickness protected by a ZnO layer, we demonstrate complet…
